On the 5th of December 1973 we got the first images of Comet Kohoutek, pic related.
Comet Kohoutek is a long-period comet; its previous apparition was about 150,000 years ago, and its next apparition will be in about 75,000 years.
Before its close approach, Kohoutek was hyped by the media as the "comet of the century". However, Kohoutek's display was considered a let-down, possibly due to partial disintegration when the comet closely approached the Sun prior to its Earth flyby.
In 1974, Llee Heflin, a Thelema occultist, published what he claimed to be a message from the comet.
Probably a dead end though.

Skylab is probably it though. Maybe it could serve as a waystation between Earth and the Moon.

I've got nothing on the occult side of comet Kohoutek, and any mentions of anything is so obscure that I doubt we're supposed to find anything here. I have no idea what Llee Heflin thought he hear the comet say.
Here's some various facts I found though:
The comet was hyped to be the event of the century, as bright as a full Moon of not more, but got too close to the Sun and fizzled out so that it was much less bright than expected. It was seen as a PR-disaster for astronomy.
In 1974 (or late 1973) the "Kohoutek Celebration of Consciousness" occurred, which was a hippie/new age/occult event that marked the arrival of the comet, which some thought would bring about great cosmic changes. It was supposed to start the Age of Aquarius.
Earlier the same year, the "Children of God" cult heralded the comet as the end of the world, and there was at least one (possibly several) suicides in the cult, but I guess that's just what happens when comets come, so it's probably not significant.

I's like to know that Heflin wrote, but if there's anything to the comet it's probably not at all related to the occult.

Furthermore, I'm not able to find any photographs of it at all before the 5th of December. However, there's one thing I read that says it was actually observed and studied as early as the 1st of December, but that the official observation and data collection for some reason stopped on the 5th.
