A letter from Somber: Fans, Friends, Musicians- In May, 2011, I came across an incredible story; incredible in that I didn't believe such a story could exist. Fallout and My Little Pony? It seemed such an incongruity that I put it off for several months. Finally, I started reading it. It took me several chapters to get into it. Like many fics, the beginning was rough and unfamiliar. Then it did something I never thought possible: it made me cry for Diamond Tiara. The first of many. From that time on, I knew I was engaged in something special. And as often happens when I get pulled into a wonderful setting, I began to imagine stories. What if this. What if that? I had an idea for a story, and ending really, and asked Kkat permission to use her world and write my idea. Kkat graciously accented, and I came up with Horizons, an antagonist who eventually became Goldenblood, and then my protagonist. Blackjack. Believe it or not, in the beginning she was quite 'similar' to Little Pip. Maintenance mare. Lonely. Lesbian. Bad relationship with her mother. Sigh... that would never do. So I thought of a character who was the opposite of Little Pip. Where Little Pip was serious, mine would be immature. Where Little Pip was smart and clever, mine would be reckless and foolhardy. She had combat skills, but would rely on others for details like lockpicking and terminals. And as a foil: P-21. A negative to Blackjack's positive. And so Horizons began. It was quite a learning experience. I had little grasp of what Fallout was at the time, and the first chapters hew close to Fo:E. But I had a few readers from some earlier stories who liked it, and encouraged me, and so I stuck with it. For the last three years, Project Horizons has been a corner stone of my life. It's grown far beyond anything I've expected; taken twists I did not plan and turns that I did not want, but stuck with. Characters and their relationships shifted around. Glory lived. Boo was born. A Brotherhood scribe became an alicorn. So many unexpected things. I had such plans... and the story took entirely different turns. I've always depended on others to keep Horizons going. From readers who gave it a purpose, to critics who supplied me with feedback for improvement, to the utterly priceless time and effort given by a number of editors and pre-readers such as Hinds, Bronode, Snipehamster, and Swicked. I've been dependent on financial support from many generous individuals over the years while working from job to job during this recession, and Horizons has literally kept me alive more than once. There aren't sufficient words to express my gratitude. A number of musicians have contributed their time and talent on a number of works inspired by and dedicated to Project Horizons. They've put their hard work into creating this album to help support the project. I wish to thank StrachAttack (sorry!), Aftermath, SMOR3S, Aoshi (Producer, organizer and contributor), TrueBolt (Co-Producer and original concept) Kitsune (Co-Producer, the voice of Blackjack in this album), Versal, Tay, Biscayne, Buffalo Brony, TIFWhitney, ThatMusicBrony, Risen, Flaedr, Seventh Element, Evdog, Swedish Horse Mafia, Vylet, UnderKeel, Vinyl Love, Ponytronic, Garnika, Absempti, Agents of Discord, DatWhackProducer, mycutiemarkisagun, Technickel Pony, Nocte Ensis, Rainboom, CrazedRambling, Hanna & Hiffa, PierceStrine, Choons (Tuner Symphon), Xalpheon, Artl3ss (Maretin Garrix), Starflight, taZe, Ricky Denzel, Office Bats, Reverbrony, FLAOFEI, RKIT (HACKD) for their contributions to Project Horizons. If you enjoy their works, I hope that you might consider helping them as you have helped the project. The generosity you've shown with this will hopefully permit me to meet many other readers at conventions in 2014 and 2015. For all your support, thank you. For all the hard work of the artists, thank you. From Blackjack, P-21, Morning Glory, Rampage, Scotch Tape, Boo, and myself, Thank you. Somber.
