>In the ancient days, long before King Sombra, the crystal ponies were at war over resources
>Three factions existed
>One stood for the conservation of waterways
>The second stood for the protection of farmlands

>Without even a single one of these things, nopony could hope to survive
>So after years of war, one crystal pony named Isokan united them under the common cause of survival
>They pooled resources and knowledge to make one society
>One that combined their waterways with the farms and magic
>Legend has it that they attained harmony with the crystals around them
>They could heal, grow, and had mapped out the stars with only the most basic of tools
>Ruins of the ancient empire still stand today
>At the peak of their time, the ancient crystal ponies combined all their knowledge, including that of their magic and placed it into a crystal crown, worn by each ruler
>The crown held immense power, and was worn be each king as a symbol of his command
>With that much power at ones disposal, it was only a matter of time before it corrupted somepony
>One fateful year, it happened
>King Ibaje fell to the power he carried
>He bent everypony to his will, and shattered the peaceful lives of his subjects
>Then, one pony managed to challenge him
>The battle costed them both their lives, but the pony had succeeded
>He shattered the crown
>All that remained was a single shard
>It is said that the shard alone still has the power of the crown
>So it was locked away in a deep underground labyrinth designed so that no matter what, the crystal shard would remain hidden
>And so it stayed for centuries
>Sadly, one pony did find it
>That pony then became King Sombra
>A pony obsessed with power, who enslaved his kingdom trying to unlock the secrets of the shard
>Since his defeat, the shard has been recovered and locked away
>But now, it is missing
