-Insatiably curious, very scientific/logical, strong sense of justice.
-Mentor was Maimeron the Magnificient, a powerful unicorn wizard capable of magical flight, a skill he learned from the Chineighse Immortals, a group of taoist mages seeking to achieve immortality through alchemy. A skill he passed on to his pupil, outside the confines of the Canterlot Magical Tradition.
-Idyllic upper class [not noble] upbringing, parents died at sea when he was 14, whereupon he was transferred into the custody of his globetrotting grandfather Maimeron.
-Continued studies into magic, fell in love at age 16 with beautiful girl he saw several times in his youth, Aurora.
-When he's 19 and they are engaged, she suddenly falls ill, he devotes his time and energies to curing her to no avail.
-Continues his studies, becomes Professor at the age of 24.
-Has a deep interest in magical traditions outside his own, especially those dismissed as superstition, but which he actually believes may constitute legitimate schools of magic known by pre-literate societies in ancient Equestria, possibly surviving to this day, and which he believes modern shamanism and necromancy to be derivatives of.
-Has constructed a powerful staff to use as a catalyst, which from a fluff perspective does not grant him its spells, but merely facilitates double casting. He can also transform it into magical minions.
-Lives alone in a tall tower in Canterlot which serves as his study.
-Secretly, part of his motivation for his magical research is finding a way to revive Aurora.
