You and AJ are sitting on a park bench beside the pond. On a weekend, this seemed like the perfect way to spend it.   Reaching into your satchel, you pull out a few food items from your bag, laying them on the seat between you. "So how was your trip to the Oranges? I hope the train delays didn't hold you up, y'know, with all the buffalo." You smile   >"Yeah, ah got held up pretty bad, it was a darn shame that ah missed the Manehattan parade, but it was still nice to see them." She says, taking a rather large bite out of her sandwich. >"Ah waited for ages, the trains were given me a headache something awful, passin' through the station like that.   "You're telling me! It's the only way us wingless, hornless folk can seem to get around here." AJ nods in agreement, attacking her sandwich a little aggressively. You can tell her folksy, rustic pallet was unaccustomed to the hoity-toity cuisines of Manhattan country.   >"Y'know, ah always noticed something a might strange on those platforms."   "Do I feel another question of the day coming on?" You crack a grin, rubbing her hat back and forth   >"Aww shucks anon, ah can't help it, you're the only one around these parts that seems to give two bits about where my mind wanders.”   "I like answering your questions AJ, you know you want to ask them!" You tease.   >"Well it's like, when your on a train, did ya ever stick your head out the window?"   "Out the window? Like a dog?" You laugh.   >"Exactly! the noise the train makes, it's always the same sound."   "Go on"   >"Well uhm, when ahm on the platform, it's different.”   You're no less than entertained as Applejack demonstrates by lifting her hooves in the air, sandwich in hoof.   >"Ah was sittin' there on the platform and a real short train, a couple of carriages at the most, came by. The train was a real high pitched noise at first, and then woosh! It left the station, but the noise it left behind, was changed. It went from a high noise, to a low noise. Do ya know what ah mean, Anon?”   Her curiosity makes you warm inside, you look over to the pond, the ducks are dowsing themselves in water, cooling off from the heat of the sun. “Here, let me show you something” The both of you stand, and you make your way to the pond edge, you break off small parts of your sandwich. “Sound is tricky, we can’t see it, but it can still be squeezed, stretched and moved about just like any other ordinary object.   >”Ah can’t say ah quite..“   “Look at that duck sitting on the pond, see how his feet are making small ripples in the water?”   >”Yup”   “Just like ripples in water, sound is made up of waves. Now let’s just imagine for a minute, that the train you took the other day, is this duck. You throw a small piece of your sandwich into the water, it’s a fair way for the duck to swim, and of course, he swims all the way to the other side, gobbling it up in one piece.   “What did you notice about the duck?”   >”Well goll-ly! He was a might hungry!”   “Your forgetting the imagery AJ.”   AJ scrunches a little. >”Sorry sugarcube, that train was a might hungry!” She winks   Goddammit. You throw another piece of bread, this time on the other side of the pond, the duck happily swims across to collect it.   “If you look AJ, as the train moves. the ripples going in the train’s direction are closer together than the ones it leaves behind, so right now we’re hearing the beginning of the train, when the sound was at it’s highest.”   The both of you watch dramatically, as the cute little duck makes it’s way across the pond, you hold Applejack’s shoulder as you try and to cope with the intense situation.   “He hasn’t passed us yet, still slow, wait for it. MEEEEEEEEE-”   The duck is nearly in front of you now, and Applejack laughs as you imitate the noise of a passing train   “-EEEOWWWWWMMM”   >”Hey yeah, ah see now!”   “Standing on the train, the ripples are always the same distance apart, but from the edge of the pond, us, the observers.”   >“The sound is squeezed and stretched!”   ”That’s it AJ, you’ve got it!   You rub her hat, and she smiles at you again, you never get tired of that smile, and never will as long as it belongs to Applejack. Now occupied by Lyra and Bon-Bon in your absence, the both of you walk past the bench, sitting on the grass beside.   >”That’s what ah like about you Anon, you explain things in ways no one else ever could.”   “Thing is Applejack, as much as other ponies like to claim otherwise, you do have pretty out-there nebulous thoughts, don’t you?”   >”I guess, but there’s some things ahm bettin we’ll never be able to explain.”   “Like what?” You ask   >”How in tarnation is Lyra able to sit like that?”
