Awakening into a hospital, you befriended the creatures of the world including a mare named Nurse Redheart, who has taken care of you. But as soon as you started to get settled, something attacked Ponyville and destroyed the town! The shadow that passed over destroyed many lives, and along the path to find this shadow you’ve recruited many into your party along the way, as well as many more to come. You left for Canterlot to meet the rulers, Princesses Celestia and Luna, who’ve had their magic and life force taken by the shadow that haunts the land, as has tasked you with finding and annihilating it once and for all. So, with your party you’ve travelled across Equestria to the Crystal Empire, saved the masses with problems small and large, and saved Princess Cadance from the shadow’s grasp. Now you’re on your way to Appleoosa and the Badlands to find Queen Chrysalis’ hive to cleanse it of the shadow’s corruption, and hopefully rid it from this innocent world forever. As of right now, you currently have Nurse Redheart, Berry Punch, Iron Will, and Gable in your party. Previous party members include Applejack, Pinkie Pie and Zecora. With changing perspectives, you are currently Redheart, on your way to Appleoosa as you wait for Berry and Gable to return from their adventure.]   This is a text adventure-style RPG-oriented CYOA. It detects all shapeshifting magic though, not just them.” “I think you should activate it now so we don’t get any surprises. We are getting close to the Hive, after all.” >”Good point.” >Anon closes his eyes for a moment as his markings flare to life, quickly settling as he relaxes his magic. [Anon uses 32 MP.] >”Alright…” >He looks around carefully, making sure to get Five in his range of vision so he knows what it looks like. >”... Nothing here. Looks to be clean.” “Good job.” >You raise your hoof and smack his ass. >Anon yelps a bit and looks down at you with surprise, and Iron starts rolling. >”Hahahaha, you two need a minute to sort out who’s the girl, huh?” >”Bite me horny, you don’t sound any more impressive when you’re romping with Berry!” >”How do you know that, Doc? You been snoopin’ in our room while we were gettin’ it on!” >”Let’s just say those crystal walls were thin.” >Iron stops talking after that. “Now… I guess now that we’re sure, we should probably get ourselves some shelter before anything else. Does anyone object to going to the reservation?” >Anon, Five and Iron Will shake their heads. >With that, you nod and begin leading them back through the dusty roads of the wild south towards the reservation. >Five takes a moment to look out at the city as if she were scanning for something extra. >”Five, hurry up!” >The changeling-turned-mare looks back and nods robotically, increasing her speed to catch up with the group. >Now the four of you walk across the hills towards the camp, which you’re able to see up ahead just a mile or two. >Is there anything you’d like to do on the way there?       >Inspect Starswirl’s Restoration [An ancient spell created by the late legendary Starswirl the Bearded. Would you not be under its control like you are normally?” >She speaks calmly. >”I am unsure. If this shadow that you speak of can retrieve mental information, then it will learn the techniques of my mother’s beacon. But if it cannot, then it won’t be able to control.” >From what happened to Cadence, that means the Shadow could control him if its gotten that far. >That’s not good at all. >But you have another worry. “Everypony? Listen up.” >They all look at you as you near the reservation. “Once we get our base of operations set up, we need to move on to triage. That posting on the drought concerns me; we may want to see what we can do about fixing it, otherwise things like our lodging and ponies' attitudes may be unstable and unpredictable. We won't be able to mount a very good expedition to the Hive if this town's in danger of collapsing…” >Iron scratches his chin, putting in his two bits. >”From what I’ve been reading during my mornings before being the strongest, baddest tournament announcer there is, the drought’s been going on for about two months now. I don’t think the whole town’s gonna go kerplunk unless it keeps going for at least six more, since they can get some shipments from White-Tail if they’re really desperate. While we were walking, I saw the rivers were nearly dried up, and yet there were accounts of rain just a few days ago in the newspapers. If there was rain, why aren’t the rivers filled up more? Something weird’s gotta be goin’ on.” >You and Anon look at him like he just started cockslapping the nearest cactus. >”...What?” >”You actually have a brain? Like, everyone has a brain, but your brain isn’t shriveled up, it works?” >Iron suddenly cracks his neck and pulls up his fists, shuffling around Anon with a vigorous attitude. >”Alright Doc, put up your dukes. Nobody calls Iron Will stupid without feeling the wrath of the minotaur!” “That’s enough, children. Iron raised some good points. We’ll look into it when we get back. Play nice, babe.” >He shrugs and sticks a tongue out at Iron. >”I DON’T GOT ALL DAY-” “By the way, Anon?” >”What’s up?” “I finished my two medical mastery books on the carriage ride over. Do you still have the XXVII?” >He looks through his back for a moment, and pulls it out after finding it. >”This one?” “Care to trade, now?” >”I couldn’t learn anything from it anyways, why not?” [Anon gives you Ultimate Knowledge of Medical Mastery: Volume XXVII.] [You give Anon Ultimate Knowledge of Medical Expertise: Volume XXVI and Ultimate Knowledge of Medical Mastery: Volume I.] “Thanks. I can really use it now.” >”No problem, I might be able to get a handle on it myself, hopefully.” “Well, I just went through them and I’m still fresh. Here, let me show you something in chapter 4, and I’ll make a few notes.” >... >By the time you finish helping him out, you arrive at the reservation. >Teepees are scattered across a wide area, but most converge at the central flame, that has been magically tempered to stay alive indefinitely. >There are a few ponies visiting, however. >One of the passing Buffalo spots your party, and gives you a solid bow. >”Welcome to Chief Thunderhooves’ encampment, outsiders. What brings you here?” >What do you say?       >You look at Anon for a moment, and he looks back. >When he said you’re leading, he meant it. >It’s actually rather endearing that he doesn’t have any vanity in that way. >You look back at the buffalo and bow back to him. “Hello, my name is Redheart, and this is Anonymous, Iron Will, and Five.” >He nods to the three of them, giving Anon a longer look than the other two. >”My name is Jumping Frog. I have not seen your kind. Are you from foreign lands?” >”You could say that. A land that’s not on this world.” >His eyes widen in astonishment. >”Yes, yes! You are the one he seeks! You must come with me! We have much to discuss!” “Er, wait!” >Jumping Frog looks at you. “We’d like to go with you to see the chief, if that’s alright, and I did have a question.” >”I apologize, my little pony. What is it you wish to ask me?” “Do you know of somepony named Little Strongheart, and if so, is she here? Anon here faced her in the tournament and we’d like to make sure she is alright.” >The buffalo’s once happy and wise demeanor falls, replaced with sullen sorrow. >”Oh, yes. Little Strongheart returned to us a week ago, but she has not left her tent since. She defied the Chief’s will by attending the tournament, but we know she only did it to get the money for our water. The drought affects all of the wild south, I am afraid. When she lost, she could not look the Chief in the eyes, for she said she would not come back without that prize money. Poor calf…” “Oh my… We’ll definitely stop by and help her, then.” >”Thank you. We have tried all we can to help her shattered spirit recover, but to no avail. But please, the Chief awaits the human.” >Jumping Frog turns and leads the four of you deeper into the reservation, as many buffalo stop their cooking, painting and dancing to wave at your party. >It seems that you’re either starting to become famous, or they’re just very friendly. >You’re not sure you like the attention. >Anon doesn’t seem to mind, as he and Iron are waving back. >You silently pray for this to be over, and eventually it is answered as Jumping Frog leads you into the biggest tent on the far side of the camp with its own torches. >As you step inside, you’re immediately assaulted with the smell of mystical incense. >There are dim candles lit from natural wax around the hide-strewn abode, with an exuberant braided rug and many decorations. >There’s quite a few Buffalos in here, but they’re either asleep, sewing leather items or forging things. >It looks like the Chief is the production-master in this reservation. >Thunderhooves himself is in the center, and Jumping Frog gets his attention as he turns to your party. >”Oh, welcome strangers. I see you have come a long way on your journey, from the auras you all carry. It seems you’ve been through some hardship. But, I do ask that your changeling friend return to her natural form, as we do not care for deception.” >You’re stunned. >How did he figure that out, does he have the same spell as Anon? >He looks visibly shocked too, but you need to heed what the Chief says. >Five will only respond to the party, so she awaits your command. >What would you like to do?       >You look back at Five, still a little baffled by Thunderhooves’ knowledge. “I guess… You heard what the Chief said.  I think you’re safe here, so assume your normal form. We don’t want to offend anyone.” >Five nods slowly, and a sickly green glow emanates from her white horn, which melts away into a black and green shell that overtakes her body. >After a moment, the changeling is completely present in her original form, looking carefully at her surroundings in case anyone decides to take action. >But nothing happens. >Chief Thunderhooves smiles, even chuckling at the sight. >”Do not be afraid, young one. Your people may be feared amongst the masses, but we believe here at the reservation that all have a chance to redeem their species’ honor. If you are humble and kind, we shall be humble and kind in return. Be courteous, and you are always welcome.” “We thank you sir, for the welcome, and hope that we find you in good spirits. You understand, I hope, that our guide's deception is a necessary one, for its safety.” >He nods with understanding, and raises a hoof for your party to sit. >”Many act upon their fears in ways that are untrained, instinctual. Our way of life seeks to remedy this. I will ask how you came across a changeling ‘guide’ as you say later, but for now, let us get comfortable.” >One by one, you, Anon, Iron and Five each sit down on the pillows provided, and you’re served something in a saucer by a few betty’s. >Thunderhooves himself sits down last. >You were always under the impression that the Bison were all simple, primitive folks with a short fuse after what apparently happened with Appleloosa a few years before. >But now that you are here speaking with their leader in person, it’s so much different. >The Chief is… majestic. Wise beyond his years, no doubt, and truly peaceful, right to his core. >It humbles you to be in his presence, and for good cause. >”Please, drink. We have not much water, but our herbal tea will hopefully suffice. Now then…” >The chief turns his attention to Anon. >”I must make sure of what I see. You are a human, yes?” >The doctor-in-training nods. >”Yeah.” >”And you are the one who won the tournament?” >”Er… Yeah-” >”And it is you who beat Little Strongheart, our most prized defender?” >”Well, yes but-” >”It is alright, child. I have not requested you here to admonish you or your violent nature. In fact, as grim as it may sound, I have need of it.” >The tent is silent for a moment as the words sink in, and the Chief takes a sip of his own tea. >”I am sure you have all heard of the drought that has plagued our land, yes?” >You nod quickly, able to get to the point you tried to come to earlier. “If it’s possible, we would like any information regarding your water problem so we can help you in any way.” >”I am glad that you are so eager to lend your expertise! But please, allow me to tell you the nature of this situation.” >You stay silent so he can speak, and the party listens to the Chief’s words. >To begin, he looks over at one of the betty subordinates within the tent, and a few of them come to the front flaps, closing them. >The tent’s interior becomes shrouded with relative darkness for a fleeting moment, before a flame in the center of the circle --made by your party-- is brought to life. >This flame begins as a normal fire would, red hot and flickering. >But with a blow from Thunderhooves’ herbal wind, it suddenly turns a tint of blue and jade, beginning to swirl within its base. >Then the Chief begins his story, with the fire acting as visuals of the past. [ http://vocaroo.com/i/s0706P5oGanL ]   Long ago, before the reign of the Sun and Moon, even farther beyond the Age of Chaos, there was no civilization. Before this land was even called Equestria, the Bison roamed free in spirit and ties. They were a proud and profuse kind, protective of their children, prosperous in their culture. They practiced ancient magics that have evolved into what we use today, became great warriors in times of trial, and never left the sweet, gentle hoof of nature behind. But with every story, there is conflict. The Bison once had an enemy, known as… the Exanimor. An evil force, that created their army from the Bison’s lost brothers and sisters, using their bodies as their own, as well as commanding powerful magical entities, such as the Windigo and the Changeling, before their Queen took control. The Bison and the Exanimor fought against each other, war after war, but the undead cannot rest. They do not feel fear, or have morale, only fight. Eventually, the Bison could not prevail against them, and they fell, tribe by tribe. It was hopeless, until the Ponies, of Earth, Wind and Magic all came together, banding their forces into one united, strong army bonded through friendship, that their strength was enough to drive back the Exanimor, aiding the Bison in every battle, and finally driving the evil into extinction. Bison and Ponykind alike became allies on that day, under the new banner of Equestria. But evil never rests. A lich, known as the Baron of Exanimor came to fruition. From the depths of which he came, nobody knows, as his origins are shrouded in myth. The Baron singlehandedly brought the mighty Bison and Pony armies to their knees, by taking their resources. Food, water, livestock and even magic itself fell prey to this adversary, through his Phylactery crystals. It took the unparalleled might of the chaos god Discord to stop him, and the rest as you know, is history…   >The Chief closes his eyes as the fire cleans itself of its images, now taking the form of a diamond-shaped artifact. >”We believe that our troubles today are linked to this era of our time. Each crystal controlled an aspect of the Baron’s power. All the crystals were destroyed, but it seems that the Examinor’s leader has found a way to revive himself. We know not where he is, but his Crystal of Drought has been reconstructed, and is taking the lifeblood of our land.” >Silence overtakes the dim tent once again. >”I have told you of our predicament. What is your call to the matter? Do you believe yourself strong enough for such a challenge?” >When Anon gave you leadership, you didn’t know you were going to have to make such a hefty decision. >You need to save your strength for the Hive, but this land needs your help. >You could attend to both, but it’d be hard on you, and the corruption would no doubt grow stronger. >What do you say?       >Anon already looks raring to go, and Iron’s cracking his knuckles. >Men… >You look back at Chief Thunderhooves, speaking carefully for the thought process that’s going through your mind. “We will undertake this task for you... with provisions. We can’t go into such a fight unprepared, and our party is currently divided. When they return, and when we are properly attired, armed, and educated, then we will set to the task of taking down this Lich.” >”Heavens, of course! I would not be so forward as to send you away without even a little aid from us.” >That caught you off guard. “Really?” >The Chief even laughs a bit at your disbelief. >”Yes! So, you accept?” >You look at Anon and Iron for a moment, who each nods excitedly. “...I guess we do. Although, we must tell you something first. The reason that our group is together in the first place is because of a much more dire situation.” >Thunderhooves watches you, listening intently. “We’ve been assigned a mission by Princess Celestia herself to track down and destroy an evil entity only known as the Shadow. Almost a month ago, it passed over Equestria and nearly destroyed all of Ponyville with its mere presence, and it’s stolen the power of Celestia and Luna, and nearly took Princess Cadence’s magic too. We’ve been moving all across Equestria to get to it, and we have reason to believe it’s at Queen Chrysalis’ Hive --also why we have our changeling guide-- attempting to steal her power as well. It’s already destroyed the world that Anon is from, and we’re trying to stop it from doing the same to this one.” >Silence falls upon the area once again, with a much more solemn tone. >Eventually, the Chief sighs heavily as if a mighty weight was placed on his shoulders. >”It is dark times that we live in. But for you and your friends to come so far, and stay so strong… It does give me a powerful sense of security. I must ask again, are you sure you can take up the burden of our land as well as this overwhelming threat?” “We’ve already decided we will. Don’t worry about us, just give us the time we need to prepare and we’ll deal with it.” >”You are very brave, and so I will tell you the terms. We do have a method of defense against the Examinor that has proven to be crucial for survival.” >Anon claps his hands and laughs in excitement. >”It’s always good to know there’s a way to survive, especially with my track record. What is it?” >The Chief stands up, raising his hoof to one of the wrapped items that lay in front of the Bison shrine of his tent. >”I must warn you of a few things, first. We can help you, but you must undergo a trial fit for a Bison warrior, and pass to be able to receive this blessing. And only one of you can receive it, as well, so I would choose wisely on which of your party would be strong enough to handle such an ordeal.” >As he speaks, another betty takes the item from the shrine and hands it to him, and he begins to unwrap it from its cloth. >”It is a trial of the spirit, to go forth into the realm of souls and prove your heart. If you pass, you will be able to pass through the Gate, but if you fail, you may never return to the realm again. Be wise with who you pick for this trial, as I have said, because this is the only opportunity we can afford to give you.” “...We understand.” >Thunderhooves removes the cloth from the item, revealing a long, ornate vial filled with a shimmering white liquid. >”Take it, and when one of your party succeeds or fails, come back and we will show you the way.”   [RECEIVED TEA OF BOOL (Begins the spirit trial when drunk)] [QUEST TRIAL OF THE BISON ACCEPTED: Endure the Realm of Souls (0/1), Report back to Chief Thunderhooves (0/1)]   “If I might ask, how did Discord stop the Exanimor? And... well, if I may be blunt, why? I thought conflict and strife were Discord's highest goal?” >”Believe me when I say that nobody would have ever guessed Discord to have compassion in his heart, but it should be noted that soon after he defeated the Baron, he took over Equestria himself and began the Age of Chaos.” >Oh, so that’s how it started… >No wonder they didn’t use the Elements of Harmony against the Examinor either, since it was before they were ever discovered. >Either way, you have a few more concerns. “As I’ve said, we’re also missing two of our party that should arrive at the end of the day or early tomorrow, so is it alright if we stay here for refuge?” >Chief Thunderhooves nods lightly with a smile. >”Of course. And for you generous warriors, I will even let you stay in the Refugee Hut for free. Just don’t make too much of a mess when you see the food, okay?” >Iron Will starts salivating at the prospect of rich, fresh Bison food. “I’ll keep the boys in check. Thank you, Chief. Oh, and one more thing.” >”Yes?” “We’d like to apologize to Little Strongheart, and maybe even have her come with us so she knows she is still a competent defender. Where could we find her?” >”If you take her with you on your quest, you must protect her, and make sure she’s safe.” “Of course!” >”Hah, I was just making sure. She resides on the third teepee from the left of the reservation’s flame. I do thank you for thinking of her. Were there any other concerns before we finish this conversation, might I ask?” >Is there anything else you’d like to ask Chief Thunderhooves?       “Hello.” >The Chief gives you an odd look. >”...Hello?” “Er, sorry. Well, can you tell us what the blessing will actually give us? And, what will the trial be like?” >”The blessing you will receive is different for all who take the path. The trial has also been different for the warriors who take it, but all you need to know is that it will test your character to the utmost limit, and your limitations will become apparent. Do not tread lightly when considering who to give this to.” “I will definitely be sure then. Also, can you tell us anything about Frizzy Gear and what he’s like? And if you know anything about him and his family, and there was a train heist a few days ago. The Gear name came up, and we were investigating it.” >Chief Thunderhooves looks surprised for the first time since you met him. >”I know of Dr. Gear, and I can assure you he is no such pony. He is a bit… brash, but he is good at heart and would never resort to stealing. I am also aware that he has a brother far north, but that is all I can tell you.” “Thank you, I was just making sure. Oh, and perhaps one more thing: I’m a medical practitioner and Anonymous is training to become one, and we noticed both the healing tent and the clinic on the way into Appleloosa. May I ask what differentiates the two?” >He blinks for a moment to realize what you’re asking. >”...Oh, there is? Well, I’m not sure. The Healing Tent was made to spread the knowledge of our ways and Smears on Faces volunteered to be the keeper. If there is also a clinic, then I am sure it is just a misunderstanding.” “Oh, alright. I think that’s it, then.” >Chief Thunderhooves nods to you and the party, and the tent flaps are reopened, letting in the cool sunny air. >”Then we are done. I thank you for taking the time to listen during your visit. Please enjoy our holiday season, the Tahlequahza Banquet, and there’s food, games and dancing. After you do what you need to do, of course.” >Iron starts getting his coat wet with spit. >”Don’t mind if I do!” >He tries to run out of the tent, but Anon grabs his tail and trips him before he races away. >”We got someone to talk to still, or did you already forget?” >”Eeughuuhuh…” >You roll your eyes and help Iron up, checking his chin before waving to the Chief. >”We’ll do what we can, and thank you for your hospitality!” >The Bison of the tent say their goodbyes, and Five reassumes her disguise as the four of you return to the outside world, the scent of rich culture flooding your senses. >”Well, we’ve got a lot on our plates now.” “No doubt…” >You look out at the reservation and there’s many things to be had. >Just like the Chief said, there’s a banquet table, dancing around the fire, games to play… >It makes you feel like there isn’t some shadowy war after all. >But you do have to go talk to Little Strongheart now. >What would you like to do?           “He said third teepee from the left of the fire, right? I think I see it.” >You walk forward and the three follow you as you make your way through the camp. >The tent that Chief Thunderhooves said it’d be is indeed there, a smaller tent than the ones around it. >The flap is buttoned shut, too. >Little Strongheart must not be too keen on being social right now, and you don’t blame her. >She apparently went to fight in a dangerous tournament against her Chief’s will, and then lost. >You wouldn’t feel too good about that either. >Since you can’t come in, you’ll have to talk to her from outside. >Anon seems to get the same idea, because he starts to cup his hands in front of his face to yell out to her. >”HELLO?-” “Anon!” >”What?” “I don’t think it’d be very wise if you were the first to say something. She might not have anything against you, but you are the one who beat her.” >He scratches his head, a little embarrassed. >”Yeah, good point. You gonna say anything?” “Well… If I can think of something.” >What should you say to Little Strongheart?       >Like, what could you say? “...Little Strongheart, we’re sorry you lost- … not good...” >Maybe you could say something really crazy and throw her off? “Bitch, get the fuck out- way too abrasive…” “... Hey sorry my boyfriend exploded you and the whole stadium-... No…” >Your best bet is probably to keep it simple. >You look up and approach the flap, keeping your voice clear as you speak. “Little Strongheart, are you in there? We’d like to speak to you about something fairly important.” >There’s no answer. “Please? It concerns the well-being of your people. We need your help!” >After a long moment, a feminine and sad voice responds. >”Go away!” “We’re not joking though… We could really use your assistance!” >”Fine, what is it? I’m not coming out until you tell me!” >What do you say?       “Your people and the lands you live on are in danger of this drought. It’s not anything natural, either. They need our help to defeat a Lich that’s been taking the water from the wild south, and to do that we need your help. Would… you be willing to join us in our work to kill the Baron and bring water back here?” >There is silence for a moment, so you continue. “...If you don’t want to come out here, could I come in there?” >”I don’t care.” >You look back at Iron and Anon for a moment, and they both shrug. >If you want to talk to her, it’d probably be best to do it this way. >You grab the buttons with your teeth and undo them, and you step in through the flap before replacing them. >Once you look inside, you see that there’s no light whatsoever except for a single candle, and Little Strongheart’s looking into it with a sullen expression. >From the way the place looks, it seems as if she hasn’t left her home in days sans going to the bathroom and eating. >The amulet that she wore at the tournament hangs as a decoration on the wall, no longer around her neck. “Hi…” >She doesn’t look at you. “My name’s Redheart. I tended to you at the tournament?” >As soon as you mention it, her ears flop over her eyes as if she were covering her shame. >You have to make her feel better, somehow. >Otherwise, she isn’t going anywhere. >You sit down next to her, looking at the lit candle for a moment before speaking softly. “Listen…” >What should you say to her?
