I mean, we can see this with libertarians versus Republicans. The former, with a more robust moral foundation, are not infected by progressivism anywhere near Libertarians are, who are only second to Democrats since care/harm + freedom are better than just 'freedom'
 
You can distance yourself from libertarians but you know you just make unprincipled exceptions in most cases. IE you support redistribution and state action for social cohesion's sake, as a sort of necessary foundation to freedom ('when you're poor you dont really live' being how you framed it). They are still the closest to you based on what you've stated as Liberalism. They are still your companions
 
You can say they are in opposition based on your subjective interpretation of Liberalism, but just as you make allowances for some statism and redistribution, liberal nations and groups make allowances for progressivism because in their mind restorative justice increases freedom. Unless you attack the premises for this restorative justice (ie blank slatism generally) you arent free.
