One day... >Out hiking in the jungle. >See a very fat fluffy mare waddling around. >She's breathing heavily, looks to be in some pain. >Must be pregnant, ready to foal. >Looking for a safe place to give birth. >Don't know why she's alone and not with a herd. >Hide in the brush...create a blind. >Set up video camera. >Time to observe; for SCIENCE. >Mare finds a sheltered space behind a log, under a bush. >Pants and whimpers as its amniotic sac breaks. >Sobbing and crying in great pain the mare pushes out a wet slimy foal. >She pulls the squeaking foal to her and cleans it. >Mare begins pushing again; must be the placenta. >No...it's another foal. >Wild mare had twins. >She seems worried, cleans the second foal as quickly as she can. >Hungry babies are already crying for milk. >Mare pushes again...this time it really is the afterbirth. >Ignoring the foals for a minute she eats the placenta. >Something really must have her worried. >Wild animals instinctively destroy the placenta so predators don't smell it. >She's not fast enough. >The predators have found her.   2/2 >Fluffy mare looks around in terror. >The land crabs have found her birthing spot. >She's big enough to escape them, but her newborns can barely move. >Fluffy momma snaps at crabs, desperately keeping them away from babies. >The two blind foals squirm around, looking for milk. >They are unaware of the danger. >Their loud squeaks attract more crabs. >Frantic fluffy momma can't keep her foals in one place. >She can't protect them. >Crab pinches one baby. >It squeals in pain. >Momma fluff rushes over and chases that crab away. >Other baby screams...it's got 3 crabs picking at it. >Momma can only defend one baby at a time. >Crying in panic, she tries to push babies together so she can protect them. >It's not very effective. >If she had a herd, other fluffies would help protect the foals. >For whatever reason, this mare has no herd. >Bigger foals could climb onto her back. >These are just newborns, they aren't strong enough. >Whenever momma turns her back the crabs swarm her unprotected foal. >"Go 'way widdle munstas! Weave babees awone!" >It's hopeless. >Minutes after drawing their first breath, the terrified squeals of the babies cease. >The exhausted momma fights off the crabs for another 20 minutes. >Finally, she can fight no longer. >Tearfully, she abandons her lost foals. >The crabs feast. >Discovery Channel buys the dramatic video you shot.
