I may not have much faith in humanity's dignity, or moral accomplishments, but I ill never disparage humanity's ability to achieve. In the past, we saw the ravages of disease, and blamed it on sorcery and demons. We later found our enemy, and was able to defeat it. To all other animals on this rock, disease is still nothing but an unknowable, unbeatable angel of death, and we overcame it. We looked at the sea, and learned to cross it, rather than seeing it as our permanent boundary. We wished to fly, and we built wings to do it. We are the only species who has ceased to NEED to evolve. Evolution occurs when a species must adapt to an environment that changes. We instead changed the very world around us. There are many places that are manmade peninsulas. We have CREATED land where there was not before. We, and as far as we currently know, the true masters of our universe. Ragnarok was once said by our ancestors to be the battle that the gods would die in. Ragnarok has a name: humanity. We killed our gods because we have no need for them. We killed our gods because we learned their secrets. We killed our gods because we are more powerful than they. We killed our gods, and became our own gods. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. The combat of superstition, ignorance, and contentment with where we are. The triumph of knowledge, understanding, and our unending struggle to know all that can be learned. Austin Osman Spare once said "We must never be afraid to go too far. True knowledge lies beyond." While the man himself was a mystic, his ethos holds true. Humanity's entire history is going beyond what we were comfortable with. We ventured down from the trees, and laid clay in ovens, and built the first cities. We lashed wood and pitch together, and sailed the oceans. We domesticated animals to do our work. We invented the wheel, the sail, the airplane. We looked to the sky, and saw more than a cloth that heaven peeks through in pinpricks. We saw the stars, and knew them. We gave them names, and one day, we will go there. Humanity must never be afraid to go too far, or to risk playing god. We do not "play" at being god. We are god. We invented gods, and we have shown that they are weaker than us. Myth says that to defeat the titans, Zeus lifted Mount Olympus, and brought it down on the heads of the titans, and imprisoned them below. For 800 years, this was the absolute pinnacle of what achievable power was thought to be. To the Greeks and the Romans, they were right. Now, the power to lift a mountain into the air and bring it crashing down on the heads of our foes has a name other than "Zeus' Wrath." It is called "nuclear weapons." >>  Anonymous  08/25/12(Sat)23:18 No.4137607   File: 1345951084064.png-(280 KB, 428x706, Morpheus.png)   >>4137097 "You will soon have your God, and you will make it with your own hands.." >>  Anonymous  08/25/12(Sat)23:19 No.4137640   >that feel when I'm feeling feels i never felt I could feel >>  Anonymous  08/25/12(Sat)23:19 No.4137644   I felt so sad when I heard. We follow what drives us, with a burning in our soul, loving the journey as much as our dream of finally reaching the destination. To those who embody this, they bear the Element of Passion.   (cont.) We will never stop asking "Why?", never stop looking for the truth behind the legends...and never stop trying to comprehend the vast wonder of this universe. To those who embody this, they bear the Element of Curiosity.   Some may claim that our search for truth leaves us bereft of soul; that our cleverness leaves us hard and unkind. But our understanding of the world does not narrow our imaginations, but expands them. Science can indeed coexist, and indeed thrive along with our love of the Arts, and those who know this bear the Element of Creativity.   Finally, there is one thing that Progress is built for. When these six virtues come together, they create something grand; a vision of the future, where things are always improving. A belief that one day, we will move past this tiny, conflicted existence and become something much grander than what we are now. Tomorrow is not the realm of the fearful and doomed, but the world of dreams becoming reality. That is what the final Element is. That is what Science and Progress are.   Hope. He also found success back home in his native Ohio in business and academia, and became a community leader in Cincinnati.   He remained an advocate of aviation and exploration throughout his life and never lost his boyhood wonder of these pursuits.   As much as Neil cherished his privacy, he always appreciated the expressions of good will from people around the world and from all walks of life.   While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves.   For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. I learned this because of the drive and courage of one man. I will never forget this man, and I hope from the bottom of my soul that he will always have a place in our hearts. But we can not forget the ones who came before him. The ones who gave up everything to make what he did possible. we must learn from the past, and learn from these men and women to do something special with our lives. For as long as you push yourself, as long you never hold back, Anyone can touch the stars   -Anon   Dear Anon, I couldn’t understand what was going on, I didn’t even know if I was alive. But today I feel the greatest sadness, because he was the first man on what I have dreamed about. I saw the post that said he didn’t even think about going. He was one of the people who didn’t dream about the great thing that is the moon. It’s just something so very far away that we will probably never touch. I know when you mean shoot for the stars, not literally like he did, but all way go ahead and do what you want. Nothing is restricted if you actually want it. I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air....   Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even eagle flew — And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, - Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. The youngest of them is already 76.   Soon we'll live in a world in which every human being, who ever visited another heavenly body and every human being who has ever been far enough away from our planet to see the entire circle of the earth with his own eyes, is dead and just another character in the history books.   Time to get back into space, humanity! Every Saterday let's have a special Luna thread. No r34, no names, no trips, but we do this again. We don't wear names to rant about our lives and fake feel, we don't make the threads regularly, they're a special occasion. We let them die naturally when we're done with them and wait for the next week to post the new one.   It's just as a reminder that while we're not the a silly hugbox or an overly moderated ponychan, or a self serving EQD, we're still not /b/, we're not /v/, and we're not just about the porn.   We're part of the fandom even if reluctantly, but we're the part that isn't out to look good, that doesn't care about what others think of us. We don't don't swear to love an tolerate, but we're not afraid of doing so, but it's because we're human and not because of a cartoon. Let's be the nice board, discouraging the idea of leaders in a fandom that seek praise, but still encouraging new ideas and ways of having fun with this series.   We know that when the call comes people here aren't afraid to show they care. Someone made a thread the other day telling us they 'not understand the appeal', and we were nice back to him, posted wallpapers at his kind request.   So don't forget this. In all our different views and tastes and ways of having fun on this board most of us do care. Every Saturday night we can come back and remember that.
