Hehe!” >Barb bounces playfully in her seat, taking a big bite of mint ice cream. >”Mmmmm…. So delicious!” >A large bowl of the green ice cream rests between the two of you. >You had forgotten that Pinkie Pie was working. >You had forgotten that she knew what your favorite ice cream was. >Barb had ordered mint ice cream for herself, and Pinkie instantly assumed you were sharing a bowl. >Pinkie’s eyes glowed. >”Oooh, you’re sharing ice cream? Like you’re on a date?~ Nonny is on a date!”, she said. >You were unable to defend yourself. >Barb latched onto you, nuzzling her head into your leg. >You tried to push her away. >No good. >”Anon, are we r-really on a date!?, Barb had asked. “Ugh.” >It’s not a date. >Barb takes another bite of ice cream. >She giggles, a bit of smoke escaping her snout. >”Anon, you should eat some of this before I finish it off! Mmmm… it’s yummy.” >Her ear fins bob as she happily takes another bite of the minty treat. “Yeah… alright.” >You grab your spoon and take a small bite of it. >…. >You love mint ice cream. >Barb puts her spoon down, taking a quick break. >She rubs her round stomach, smiling at you. >”Hehe….” >You see her chubby cheeks redden once again “Everything alright there, Barb?” >You take another bite, watching as Barb clicks her claws nervously. >She gulps, before taking a deep breath. >”T-thanks for t-taking me on this… ice cream d-date, Anon.” >You shake your head and cross your arms. >Hmph. >It’s NOT a date. >She shuts her eyes and smiles widely at you. >Her cheeks still that cute shade of red. >”I hope that we can do this again soon! It’s uh… n-nice to be able to hang out, you know?” >She opens her eyes, those green irises looking warmly in your direction. >”I pretty much f-f-feel like you’re my b-best friend, or something.” >You raise an eyebrow to her. >”We’re always doing w-work and stuff, you know….” >You unfold your arms and look at Barb. >She blinks slowly, her eyes wandering from yours. >She plays with her ear fins, cheeks still flushed. >You feel your heart slightly melt. >Even though Barb was annoying sometimes…. >… >Well that’s it. >She’s annoying. >But she was being less annoying tonight. >You didn’t entirely mind it, actually. “We can do this again, I guess.” >You take a bite of ice cream. “But it’s NOT a damn date.” >Barb laughs nervously, reaching for her spoon. >”Y-y-yeah! No, no, I know that! I was j-just saying… like….” >Her ear fins droop slightly. “Barbara, you-” >She looks up at you. >Her puppy dog eyes once again destroying your last lines of defense. >Dammit, no! >You try to fight back the words building in your chest. >You try to fight against the cuteness. >But it’s just no good. >Barb’s charming eyes overpower you. >You reach over and put your hand on hers. >Barb’s cheeks are a deep red. >What the heck are you doing, Anon? >You give her claw a friendly squeeze. >”A-Anon…!” >You try to pull away with the strength of a thousand men. >Her eyes reel you back in. >She is just too cute. >Has she always been this cute? >…NO! >ARGH. “L-let’s… hang out… t-tomorrow….!” >Barb blinks, breaking her cute control over you. >You quickly pull your hand away, as if you had touched a hot plate. >You see a bit of smoke escape her snout. >She gives you a big smile. >”Y-yeah! Yeah! Let’s do that, Anon!” >She claps her claws, bouncing in her seat, tail wagging side to side. “Hrmph.” >You bury your face in your hands and groan. >”Hey… you alright there, buddy?” >Barb rubs your arm. >You mumble. “Brainfreeze.” >Barb gives you a nice pat. >”Oh, I’m sorry, Anon! Here, let me help….” >She happily finishes the rest of the ice cream as you sit in silence. >Defeated. >You breathe heavily. >Barb gives out a hearty belch, a string of green flame exiting her mouth. >”Oops… s-sorry! Hehehe….” >You laugh. “Nice.” >You get up from the table. >Mind, body, and spirit still out of sync. “It’s uh… getting late. This was fun. I should be going though…” >Barb gets up from the table as well, stretching and yawning. >”Yeah, you’re right! I’m pooped!” >You leave a few bits on the table and head for the exit. >Barb follows you excitedly. >The two of you stand outside the Sugarcube Corner. >You adjust your suit as Barb stands close to you. >”I.. really had fun, Anon.” >You nod. >”Like… a lot of fun!” >Nod. >”I don’t think I’ve had that m-much fun in a while!” >Keep nodding, Anon. >Don’t look into her cute eyes. >You cough. “Well… I should get going.” >Barb tugs at your sleeve. >”Do you… want to w-walk me home?” >You sigh deeply. “Barb. You live like three feet away.” >She laughs nervously. >It was true. >”Haha, y-yeah… you’re right.” >She nuzzles your leg. >”So I’ll see you tomorrow, Anon?” >You nod, avoiding her eyes to the best of your ability. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Barb.” >She hugs your waist tightly. >You give her a gentle pat on her head. >”Thanks again for the ice cream. It means a lot to me….” >Barb lets go of you, somewhat unwillingly. >”See ya.” “Peace.” >You watch as Barb walks briskly away, her tail still swaying in contentment. >She hums happily as vanishes behind a home. >You turn and begin to head back to your cottage. >What has your life become? >Why are you finding her so cute all of a sudden? >And why are you finding her less unbearable than usual? >No. >That one is a lie. >She is definitely still unbearable. >In a… you-need-less-of-her-around kind of way. >Though… she is really appreciative of you. >In a… annoying-cute-dragoness kind of way. >You groan. >Now it's time to figure out what to do tomorrow on your date. >... >You yell, fists in the air. "NOT A DATE!" >A few ponies give you an odd look. >They shake their head at you. >You groan once more and continue to head back home. ~ >Celestia’s incandescent sun peers through your window, flashing brightly on your face. >You grumble and groan as your turn over. >Your sleep was less than pleasant. >Your mind overtaken by a certain dragoness. >All night. >All… damn… night. >A bird sits on your windowsill and starts to sing a familiar introductory tune to you. >You swat at the bird. “Fuck, man.” >You sit up and scratch your head. >The instant you got home you began to think of an excuse on how to cancel your ‘date’ with Barb. >As guilty as you felt about it, you weren’t sure that you wanted to go through with it. >The way Barb looked at you and the way she acted around you. >The way her eyes light up when she sees you. >The way her cute cheeks redden when you touch her. >That damn dragoness had feelings for you. >Now that you think about it… you must have known this for a while. >Though you never thought anything of it. >At least you never tried to. >You were just so put off with her clinginess that you just…. >You shake your head. >It all makes sense though. >Twilight must have known too. >Why else would she insist on the two of you hanging out so much? >Working all the time together? >You rub your temples. >You begin to think back to a few months ago… >Twilight asked you and Barb to head over to the edge of Everfree to pick some flowers for a potion she was making. >… yeah, you know. >It sounds lame. >But the pay was good, and the work, easy. >At least you thought it would be…. ~ >A few months ago…. >You are kneeling on the ground, slowly trying to unearth a blue rose-like flower from the ground. >You had been searching for this flower for hours! >Twilight had told you that they were incredibly rare. >She also told you that they were quite delicate. >You feel yourself begin to sweat. “Come on now….” >You are close to unearthing the flower. >You could practically feel the bits falling into your lap. >Haha! >Steady now, Anonymous. >You tread lightly. >You take out a special bag Twilight gave to you. “Here we go….” >You here footsteps behind you. >No, not now! >You remain vigilant. >The flower almost completely pulled. >The slightest abrasive move would surely- >”Oh, ANON!”~ >You jump slightly, damaging the flower at its roots. >You blink at it. >It’s petals begin to fall, and the flower soon dies. >You yell in frustration, pounding a fist on the ground. “DAMMIT!! UGH! What the hell is it, Barb? I almost-” >Barb does a cute pirouette, and bats her eyes at you. >One of the blue roses tucked gently behind an ear fin. >”Do ya like it, Anon?” >She presses her chubby cheeks together, smiling cutely. >You feel like screaming. >You put your head on the ground, covering yourself with your arms. >You groan for a long time. >Barb walks up to you and puts an arm around you. >”Hey, Anon… you alright?” >You shake your head. >”Well… do you like the flower?” >You shake your head again. >”Aww… are y-ya sure? I brought more just in case…” >Wat. >You look up. >Barb shakes a number of Twilight’s magical bags, each filled with flowers of different colors. >Including one bag full of the blue rose-like ones. >You cry into the earth. >”I think I l-like the purple ones the most! I think they bring out my eyes, right?” >You shake your head, continuing to sob. “Why, me…? WHY!?” >Barb nuzzles your head with hers. >Her smooth scales angering you. >You feel like pushing her away. >You hold back that urge though. >You realize that now you can get paid. >And you can get away from Barb for the rest of the day. >You sit up and groan. >Barb gives you a cute smile. >You glare. >Barb pats you on your head. >”There, there, Anon…. H-hey… cheer up, alright?” >She gives you another affectionate nuzzle. >”We can get out of here now, ok?” >Well… maybe she’s right…. >She shakes the bags again. >”Besides, I’m sure one of these would look good on you!” ~ >A few weeks after the flower search. >Your newest task was to deliver a set of important documents to Princess Celestia in Canterlot. >You were excited to travel to Canterlot, as you didn’t get to leave Ponyville often. >Of course, you were paired with an overly giddy Barb. >On a cramped train. >With no way to escape. “Ugh.” >No worries, Anon. >It would all be over soon. >You hope. >You did initially question why Barb didn’t use her magical dragon breath to deliver the documents. >And not the kind of dragon breath she gets after a hearty round of tacos. >Twilight explained that the documents were written on a unique type of parchment that aren’t suited to Barb’s breath. >She requested that they be hand delivered for safety. >Or… hoof delivered? >Anyways. >You weren’t complaining, at least not then. >Now you were having second thoughts. >Twilight was kind enough to get you and Barb a private train car. >Though she refused to get you your OWN car, as hard as you tried to convince her. >You sit across from Barb, who is humming and smiling happily. >You tap your hands on the table in between you two. >You were about 3 hours from Canterlot. >With nothing to do. >You yawn loudly. “So boring….” >Barb looks over at you, seeing your lack of enjoyment, and holds your hands. >”Anon! This is great, isn’t it? You, me, and the all of Equestria!” >She gives them a friendly squeeze. >You pull your hands away. “Yeah. Great.” >Barb fiddles with her claws. >She’s been doing that more often. >”Well… I’m really happy that y-you and me-“ >The train rumbles, causing Barb to yelp and release a stream of smoke towards your face. >You cough, trying to clear the smoke out. “Barb! What the- *cough cough*” >The smoke clears eventually, and you breathe normally again. >Barb looks at you worriedly, and then begins to laugh uncontrollably. >”HAHAHA! Anon! Your face is… HAHAHA!” >You look at your reflection in the window. >Your face was blackened. >Barb pulls out a rag and leans over the table. >”Here, Anon. Let me- >You snatch the rag from her. “I GOT IT. Damn.” >You wipe residue of your face off. >You glare at Barb, who gives you a nervous look. >”M-my bad! You okay, there?” >You fold the dirty rag and put it down. “I’m fine! Just… don’t do that again. PLEASE.” >Barb winks at you. >”No promises! Hehehe!” >You shake your head. >Why was it always you? >Why do you always have to deal with the craziness that follows when Barb is around? >You sit in silence for the reminder of the trip. >Staring out the window, seeing the land change as you approach Canterlot. >Barb tried her hardest to talk to you. >Continuously poking you, rubbing your arms, trying to hold your hands. >You refused to talk to her. >You just wanted to enjoy your time away from Ponyville without getting set on fire, falling from a tree, or being arrested. >Barb eventually gave up, resorting to sitting by herself in silence. >Playing with her ear fins. >You look over to Barb. >She is frowning, looking downwards. >Dammit. >You began to feel bad. >You lean over and rub her shoulder. “Hey.” >Barb looks up to you. >”Y-yeah?” >She continues to fiddle with her drooped ear fins. >You sigh. “You’ve lived in Canterlot before, right?” >She nods. >”I was technically born here. Twilight and I lived here for a while before we moved to Ponyville.” “Hmm.” >”I was sad when we left. But… I started to feel better when you arrived.” “Oh?” >Her cheeks redden. >”Y-yeah…” “Wow.” >”I uh… well, Twilight started insisting on me trying t-to… work with you more.” “Right, yeah.” >”She said that you needed help adjusting to your life here.” >You nod. “That… was true, sure.” >”I figured… that you would adjust better if you spent t-time with someone who was also… alone.” “What do you mean? You aren’t alone. You have Twilight, and-“ >”I mean… I’m a dragon, Anon! Not a p-pony! I don’t have anyone else like me!” >Her bottom lip quivers. >”Then I find you! And… and then I f-feel complete. Like… I finally had some-“ *DING DING* >”WE HAVE ARRIVED IN CANTERLOT. PLEASE BE CAREFUL AS YOU EXIT THE TRAIN. THANK YOU.” >You glance out the window. >Sure enough, you had arrived at the train station. >Ponies were slowly pouring out from the train. >Barb coughs. >”Hahaha! L-looks like we are here! We should g-get going, buddy.” >You watch as she nervously tries to grab her small luggage bag from the overhead storage. “Hey, Barbara. What was that you were saying?” >She struggles to remove her bag, pulling harder. >”H-huh? W-what? I wasn’t saying anything!” “You were saying something about… having some-“ >The train horn blares. >She jumps out of nervousness, causing her bag to fall on your head. >You instantly are knocked out. >The last thing you remember is Barb trying to help you regain consciousness. >That’s as far as the trip went. >When you woke up, you were halfway to Las Pegasus. >You had missed your stop because Barb didn’t try and get help. >She instead stayed by your side, trying to wake you up. >You were angry, but only for a moment. >She didn’t want to leave your side from fear of something happening. >That made you forgive and forget. >Though you weren’t excited to be scolded by Twilight for being unresponsible. >That night you got a hotel room in Las Pegasus. >For what was essentially all of your extra bits. >You ask Barb to send a letter to Twilight, informing her of the change of plans. >Barb sends the letter with her breath, giving you a weak smile. >”S-sorry. I’m r-really sorry, Anon.” >You grumble to her. >It was late, and all you wanted to do was go to sleep. >You adjust the pillows on the bed, putting a few on one end for Barb. “Alright, there is enough room for us here. This is your side.” >Barb nods, her tail swaying. >”You okay, buddy? Can I do something for ya?” >You groan. “Just let me sleep.” >Head sore and pounding, you lay in the large bed. >Barb blows out a few candles and lies in bed with you. >You turn your body away from Barb. >After a few deep breaths, you are relaxed. >This was nice. >No worries. >No anxiety. >Well… a little anxiety. >But this was fine. “Mmm… goodnight, Barbara.” >”N-nighty night.” >She shifts around her side of the bed. >A few minutes pass. >You near your sweet slumber…. >…. >You hear Barb cough. >It prevents your sleep, but only for a moment. >You groan and try to drift off again. >Barb moves around. >Your eyes open. >This wasn’t going to be easy. >You puff your pillow and try again. >A few minutes pass. >You feel it coming on. >Sleep… sweet sleep…. >Sweet- >Barb sneezes, illuminating the room with a green flame. >”’Scuse me….” >Your eyes snap open. >You will never get sleep. >Your head pounds. >”Anon…” >You remain quiet. >You feel Barb shuffle. >”You awake?” “Yes.” >”I can’t sleep.” “I know.” >”I sneezed.” “I know.” >Barb shuffles a bit more, sniffling. >”Are you alright?” “Head hurts.” >”Oh… I’m sorry.” “Meh.” >”I’m especially s-sorry about earlier…” “Fuggedaboudit.” >”I didn’t mean to hurt you, Anon.” “I know. It’s alright, Barb. Just try to get some-“ >”I love you, Anon….” “What was that?” >”Heh! I-I said I-I… uh… nothing! Just s-sleepy!” >You mumble. >You aren’t quite sure what you heard. >It is quiet for a bit. >Maybe Barb finally fell asleep. >You shut your eyes. >You feel the relaxation return. >Yes. >Time for sleep…. >You feel the bed squeak as Barb sits up. >”Anon.” >You groan. “What?” >”You awake?” “No.” >”Oh.. you sure?” “What is it, Barb?” >”I can’t sleep.” ”I KNOW. Neither can I.” >”Can you tell me a story?” >You groan loudly. “Barb, please! My head hurts so bad and-“ >Silence. >Barb shuffles more. >”I would sleep better if I-I… if I w-were next to you.” “Fine, whatever! I just need to sleep, PLEASE.” >Barb quickly moves over to your side. >Her body warming you up in an instant. >It actually… felt quite nice. >After a few seconds of shifting, Barb is cuddled up next to you. >Silence. >Breathing. >Warmth. >You feel good once more. >Sleep approaches… >”Hey, Anon…?” >You spoke too soon. >You fight the urge to yell at her. >This is going to go on all night, you feel. >Time for a different strategy. >Instead of responding, you pretend to snore. >Maybe that would work. >After a few seconds, Barb sighs. >”I’m glad you’re asleep. I w-want to tell you how much you m-mean to me…” >She gets closer to you, wrapping one her arms around you. >”And h-how safe and happy you make me feel.” >You continue to pretend snoring. >Though your ears intently listen to her every word. >”But I’m worried that….” >You open your eyes, continuing to fake snore. >”… that you really d-don’t like me…” >She nuzzles your back. >You blink a few times. >Your mind tries to wrap itself around her words. >The pain in your head creeps back. >No good. >You continue to snore. >Barb holds you tight and lets out a sigh. >”I j-just want you to like me.” >After a few minutes, you begin to hear her snore gently. >The pain in your head prevents you from doing much else. >You take a few deep breaths as you feel her body rises and fall in a gentle rhythmic pattern. >She feels… nice. >Barb’s warmth helps bring you to sleep. >You breathe slowly again. >And soon you are asleep, with a cute dragoness latched on to you. >Scared to let you go. ~
