- Michael Saffioti, 22, who, upon his mother's advice, had turned himself in to the Lynnwood Police Department after missing a court date, was dead after just one night in the Snohomish County Jail in Washington state
- He suffered from an apparent Severe Allergic Reaction after being given Oatmeal which may have contained Milk Products which Mr. Saffioti was allergic to.
- He was allowed to die without being given any medical advice.

- John Lovick: A timeline
- May 9, 1951: Born in Shreveport, La., the nearest city to his family's sharecropper home in a Robeline cotton field.
- 1955: Lovick's grandmother becomes primary caretaker for him and his three brothers in Robeline when their mother moves to Houston.
- 1960-61: Spends part of a year with his mother in Houston.
- 1962-63: Returns to Houston for another year.
- 1968: Graduates a year early from Allen High School, Robeline's segregated school for black students. Scarcely 17, he's among a graduating class of 42.
- 1968-69: Studies one year at Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, La.
- 1969-70: Works one year at a lumber company, catching boards as they emerge from a re-saw blade, then flipping them onto a pallet.
- March 1970: Tries to enlist in the Air Force, but there are no openings, so the recruiter directs him to the Coast Guard. Sent to Alameda in the San Francisco Bay Area for boot camp. The company commander immediately selects him as assistant recruit commander.
- June 1970: Arrives in Seattle to be stationed aboard the Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind.
- 1971: Accepted to attend Coast Guard quartermaster and signalman schools in Newport, R.I. On his first day, a supervisor selects him to serve as class president.
- 1971-72: Returns to Seattle to serve aboard the Coast Guard cutter Wachusetts, a weather vessel.
- Competes as a Golden Gloves boxer at Seattle's former Imperial Boxing Club. Wins the light-heavyweight championship in Tacoma.
- 1972: Marries Debbie Miller; marriage lasts 17 years and produces three children — Jeffrey, Sabrina and Tina.
- 1972-74: Stationed on Seattle's Pier 91, conducting air-pollution investigations. Retires from service
- as a petty officer second class.
- April 1, 1974: Joins Washington State Patrol.
- 1978: Joins Coast Guard Reserve; serves five years.
- 1980: Graduates from Shoreline Community College with an associate degree in criminal justice.
- 1992: Marries Karen Aylesworth and moves from Bothell's Mays Pond area to Mill Creek. His family is blended with her two children.
- 1993: Elected to Mill Creek City Council; serves five years.
- 1997: Promoted to State Patrol sergeant.
- 1998: Elected to state House of Representatives; re-elected four times and serves through 2007.
- 2001: Co-Speaker of the House Frank Chopp offers Lovick a one-day chance to wield the gavel, allowing him to preside over a few bills.
- April 2002: Lovick's son, Jeffrey Lovick, graduates from Los Angeles Police Academy.
- January 2003: House Speaker Chopp elevates Lovick to position of speaker pro tempore, where he presides over an estimated 95 percent of House debates during the next five years.
- December 2004: Retires from State Patrol after nearly 31 years.
- November 2007: Elected Snohomish County sheriff, taking 51 percent of the vote in his race against sheriff's Capt. Tom Greene.
- Jan. 1, 2008: Takes office as the state's first African-American county sheriff.
