- Kristoff munched through the pear he’d grabbed from the table, doing his best to yawn and chew at the same time. Anna had insisted he come to the castle this morning, and it had to be early she’d said.
- Now he knew why. Elsa was trying to make breakfast.
- The mountain man wasn’t sure if they princesses were taught how to cook or not, but given the amount of swearing he was hearing from behind the flower painted doors, he could only guess that they didn’t. He glanced over at Anna who sat at the other side of the table; Elsa’s place was at the head, between them.
- “Do you think she’s doing alright in there?”
- “Oh I’m sure she’s fine” Anna said, waving away his concern as something shattered behind the doors.
- Kristoff took another bite, looking at his empty plate. The fruit was fresh, at least. If Elsa came out with a charred mash of inedible slop at least he could just abscond with some fruit.
- A creak stopped his thoughts and he turned around to see the queen, still clad in a nightshirt and long bloomers, entering from the kitchens. She carried a simple platter and as she sat it down on the table revealed its contents; a large plate filled with what were possibly eggs.
- They wobbled, Kristoff was sure parts of it was oozing. Black bits floated in the gelatinous egg whites. There were red specks, and green flecks, brown clots and blue spots.
- “Well? Dig in!” The queen ordered.
- With a shaking hand Kristoff spooned some possibly egg onto his plate. A thin juice puddle into the center of his plate. He was almost certain parts of it were moving.
- “Uhm… your highness…”
- “Hm?” the queen’s head spun to look at him, her hair pirouetting around her head.
- “Ahh uhm… Never mind…” he poked at the ‘food’ with his fork. He looked up and found Anna similarly hesitant. She gave him a pleading look while her sister’s attention was on him. Kristoff looked from the princess to the queen, then back to his food. Scooping up a jiggling glob onto his fork he brought the mass to his lips.
- It was somehow crunchy and fluffy at the same time. Little colors of flavor exploded in his mouth. It was possibly the best egg he’d ever tasted.
- “Oh my God. This is actually delicious!” Kristoff couldn’t help himself, he scoop up another glob of the off putting looking food and took another bite. The texture was the same but now there was a different combination of flavors. Anna did the same, and made a similar exultation.
- “What do you mean, ‘Actually’?” Elsa said, slapping her hands down onto the table.
- Both diners jumped in their seats.
- “Well it’s uh…“
- “It just looks uhm…”
- “Aargh! I knew I shouldn’t have done this! It was stupid! Stupid!” Kristoff and Anna’s breath fogged in the air as the queen ranted on, “I knew it would be terrible the moment I woke up with this damn head ache! And you!” she pointed to her sister, “This was your idea! You should have just let me sleep in! And Kristoff. No don’t talk! You should be glad I’m even letting you in here. What Anna sees in you I’ll never know! Take a bath once in a while!”
- Nothing moved in the room save for small little snowflakes floating through the air.
- “Uhh..” Kristoff began.
- “Argh!” The queen yelled as a blizzard shot through the room.
- She stamped her feet as she marched out of the room, a trail of frost following behind her.
- Kristoff and Anna stared at each other for several minutes, listening to Elsa’s footfalls through the castle, eventually ending in a loud slamming.
- “I’m sorry she’s just…ah… well… she’s like this near the end of every month…”
- Things had become awkward.
