Grunt

Role:

Grunts role on Tuchanka depends on his level of success during ME2's rite of passage against the thresher maw, and on who leads Urdnot.

Assuming Grunt defeated the thresher maw, Grunt acts as Wrex's/Wreav's personal body guard and enforcer while on Tunchanka, and a body guard for Eve when she goes off world.

If Wrex is leading the krogan, Grunt acts as a deterrent for threats against Urdnot.  Grunt is seen by many krogan as a progressive new step for Tuchankan power and innovation, the other clans are wary of challenging him. Grunt is respected and revered by most on the planet.

If Wreav is leading the krogan, Grunt acts as Wreav's assassin, preemptive enforcer, and poster boy for Urnot's domination. Grunt has already lead several successful raids on powerful rival clans of Urdnot, resulting in Urdnot becoming the planet's hegemony. Grunt is feared by most outside of Urdnot clan.

If Grunt did not kill the thresher maw in ME2, then he maintains the above roles for Wrex/Wreav, but has none of the prestige noted above. Krogan believe he is nothing more than an overconfident tank-bred. This later results in Grunt being killed in the “Meeting in the Hollows” mission.

During the “Defend Camp Urdnot” mission, Grunt helps Shepard trap/kill the Reaper destroyer.

Recruitment:

After the genophage cure is administered (or falsely administered) on Tuchanka, Wrex/Wreav will reliquish their command of Grunt, allowing Shepard to request his presence back aboard the Normandy. Grunt gleefully accepts.

Characteristics:

Grunt's memories have come into sharper focus in the year since his departure from the Normandy. Able to make sense of his skills and imprinted knowledge, Grunt is quickly maturing as an individual. This maturing process has allowed Grunt to comprehend highly advanced tactics of war (learned by Okeer). Wrex/Wreav sees these changes, and has Grunt on his small committee of warlords as they strategize against the Reapers on Tuchanka.

This maturity is not only mental however; Grunt's head plate has started to solidify into an “attractive” (according to Eve) sheet of tough skin. Grunt is more muscular than ever, and his battle armor from ME2 is now covered in war paint.

Grunt has quickly developed biotics (a suppressed trait granted by Okeer that only manifested itself recently), but  he is unsure what combatant route would work best with them. Shepard can convince Grunt to become either a vangaurd, or a sentinel.

Potential Death:

If Grunt did not defeat the thresher maw, or was not loyal in ME2, he is seen still as a freak of nature on Tuchanka, and is despised by everyone except Wrex/Wreav. The battle masters who challege Wrex/Wreav will point to Grunt as an example of Urdnot's faulty “innovations” to long standing krogan culture. If a fight breaks out in the Hollows, several krogan battle masters from rivalling clans gang up on Grunt while Shepard and Wrex/Wreav are distracted, and kill him brutally.
