  1. >It's a great day to be alive.
  2. >The sky was grey with a light cloud cover.
  3. >The sunlight glistened brightly off the light, freshly fallen snow from the night before.
  4. >The spruce trees seemed to be the only life for miles in this forest.
  5. >All the animals were probably hibernating.
  6. >Yet regardless of the somewhat gloomy atmosphere, you felt happy.
  7. >It's neither drink nor drug induced.
  8. >You're just... happy.
  9. >You had only two worries in the world.
  10. >Find food and keep Fluttershy safe.
  11. >This whole time you had to hold her when she heard a coyote call in the dead of night.
  12. >Or when the wind blew the snow so hard you couldn't see your hand in front of your face.
  13. >You recently made a questionable investment in a pull cart.
  14. >That soon proved more than useful, and they even through in a harness compatible with you to pull it easier.
  15. >You couldn't help but feel very offended at the vendor making the sale.
  16. >But given you carry a large portion of your gear on your back, not to mention you were totally unknown to most of the world, it makes sense for them to see you as a beast of burden.
  17. >And besides, now you can just pull the cart instead of carrying everything.
  18. >And you don't have to sleep in the snow anymore either.
  19. >As of late, Fluttershy's been riding in the back.
  20. >She's sleeping now, but it's becoming harder on her to keep walking like this with each passing week.
  21. >You don't particularly mind at all.
  22. >Although you feel your travels days are pretty much over now.
  23. --
  24. >The little cart hits a pothole in the dirt road, jolting Fluttershy awake with an "Eep!".
  25. >You look back and watch her look around wearily before curling back up with a blanket.
  26. "Hey, I think we're almost there," you tell her.
  27. >"Okay..." she mumbles.
  28. >You smile at your lazy wife.
  29. >Although you can't blame her.
  30. >You'd do the same thing given the chance.
  31. >Another 15 minutes and the next villages comes in sight.
  32. >You whistle sharply, causing Fluttershy's ears to perk up.
  33. "We're here," you call back.
  34. >Fluttershy sits up, still wrapped in a blanket and Angel held close in her lap.
  35. >You pull the wagon into the village.
  36. >The buildings here made of whole logs with wooden shingles for the roof.
  37. >They were raised off the ground by a thick granite foundation.
  38. >You walk up the main road.
  39. >It's a small village and all the buildings are identical.
  40. >Griffon peasants chop wood and fix upon their houses.
  41. >A few glance up at their latest visitors.
  42. >You don't get a second glance as they go right back to work.
  43. >A small market with about 5 stalls sits in the center of town.
  44. >The perveyors walk about and chat before they spot you coming.
  45. >One by one they make their way back to their respective stalls.
  46. >One in particular catches your attention and you make a bee-line right for it.
  47. >You park your cart just before it.
  48. >You unhook yourself from your harness and twist your back, popping it several times.
  49. >You help Fluttershy out of the back.
  50. >The vendor raises an eyebrow at the sight.
  51. --
  52. >"Welcome to Talonsgrove," she says. "You the circus?"
  53. >"Oh no," answered Fluttershy.
  54. >"Just traveling, then?" asks the vendor
  55. >She looks at you and points.
  56. >"Because I know that thing ain't from around here."
  57. >Fluttershy looks to you and back to the griffon.
  58. >"Yes, we're travelers. Anonymous here has come from... A, uh, very far away place."
  59. >"I believe it," said the griffon. "So do you want to buy something or just exchange small talk?"
  60. >You were browsing the griffon's goods the whole time.
  61. >All meat.
  62. >You point to a choice slab of red flesh.
  63. "That venison?"
  64. >"Yeah, tha- Wait. You mean that thing can talk?" she asks pointing at you.
  65. >You point at her.
  66. "You mean that thing can talk?" you mimic.
  67. >The griffon's not amused.
  68. >"Yes it's venison. I'm surprised a timid-looking pony like that would risk keeping a carnivore for a pet. A talking one at that."
  69. >You stare at her with a straight poker face.
  70. >"Oh, he's not my pet," said Fluttershy.
  71. >"Slave?" asked the griffon. "Well I guess that makes more sense than subjecting a pet to haul you around all day."
  72. "You know what? Nevermind. Can we just purchase this already? I've been dying for a good steak for a while."
  73. --
  74. >"And just how long is 'a while'?" asked the griffon.
  75. >You look at Fluttershy who only shrigs back at you.
  76. >When was the last time you had meat?
  77. "Red meat? I want to say... A few weeks at least."
  78. >The griffon's eyes widen in shock.
  79. >She turned on Fluttershy.
  80. >"What kind of twisted torture is this?" she shouts. "Denying a creature the succulent flesh they need to survive? That's inhumane!"
  81. >Fluttershy backed up and cowered behind her mane.
  82. "Calm down," you tell the griffon. "I'm not her slave. It's just a little harder to come by meat that it is fruits or vegetables."
  83. >"That's unacceptable," said the griffon. "Tyke!"
  84. >You turn around and spot a group of griffon cubs tackle one in a large pile.
  85. >A single head pokes up from the pile as the cub squeezes himself free.
  86. >"I gotta go, guys. I'll see you later!"
  87. >A claw pokes up and waves.
  88. >"See you later, Tyke!" calls a muffled voice.
  89. >Tyke makes his way to the stall, taking care to give you a wide berth.
  90. --
  91. >"Tyke, close the shop, then come straight home," said the vendor.
  92. >"Okay mom!" said Tyke.
  93. >The mother looked back at you and Fluttershy.
  94. >"Come with me," she says.
  95. >You and Fluttershy exchange glances and shrug.
  96. >You grab the cart handles and follow the griffon, Fluttershy walking next to you.
  97. >"So you never did tell me your relationship with each other," asked the griffon.
  98. "I'm her husband," you state.
  99. >The griffon stops in her tracks and turns around.
  100. >She stares at the two of you for several seconds in silence.
  101. >"Your husband?" she asks.
  102. >Fluttershy nods in confirmation.
  103. >The griffon blinks twice and looks to you then back to Fluttershy.
  104. >"What do you have, an exotic fetish or something?" she asks.
  105. "Heh, no not quite."
  106. >"Well it's definitely something," comments the griffon.
  107. --
  108. >You reach the griffon's home and she invites you inside.
  109. >"Just leave your stuff outside," she said. "If anything gets stolen, we'll just find the punk who did it and take it back."
  110. >That didn't give you any solace, but you do as she says and cover the wagon with the blanket.
  111. >The only thing you take inside is your guitar case, just in case.
  112. >The griffon's home is... quaint.
  113. >Animal skin floor and walls rugs for decoration.
  114. >Not to mention a few animal heads.
  115. >Fluttershy's gotta be on the verge of breaking into an insane fit.
  116. >Giving her the once over, she doesn't even seem to acknowledge the decor.
  117. >Your host seats you on a wooden sofa with stuffed cushions and walks to the kitchen.
  118. >The house is small and cramped compared to what you're used to, but you can't complain.
  119. >At least you're out of the cold.
  120. --
  121. >Your host walks back into the living room.
  122. >"How do you like your steak?" she asked.
  123. "What?"
  124. >"I said, how do you like your steak?"
  125. "I... don't... care?"
  126. >The griffon rolled her eyes.
  127. >"How about you, Miss Butterfly?" she asked Fluttershy.
  128. >"I, uh... I dnmthrg," she muttered quietly.
  129. >"Volume," said the griffon.
  130. "She don't eat meat," you clarify.
  131. >The griffon shakes her head at Fluttershy.
  132. >"That's a sad existance," she said. "I can't imagine not eating meat."
  133. "You have no idea the suffering I have endured."
  134. >"I'd rather not," she said, the two of you exchanging laughs.
  135. >"So about that," says the griffon. "You eat meat, but why haven't you been?"
  136. "I buy it. I'm not a hunter."
  137. >The griffon shakes her head.
  138. >"Well, I know what you're doing tomorrow."
  139. "What's that?"
  140. >"Don't worry about it. Name's Aada by the way."
  141. --
  142. >The front door swings open, a rush of cold air flowing.
  143. >"Mom, I'm home!" called Tyke.
  144. >He closed the door and flew to his mother.
  145. >"And this is my son, Tyke," introduced his mother.
  146. >"Hi! You're funny-looking," commented Tyke.
  147. >A swift slap upside the head corrected him.
  148. >"I mean, nice to meet you."
  149. >You can't help but chuckle a bit.
  150. "I'm Anonymous. Anon for short. This is Fluttershy."
  151. >"Hi," greeted Fluttershy softly.
  152. >"Flutters for short?" asked Tyke.
  153. >"Hehe, sometimes," giggled Fluttershy.
  154. >Aada went back to cooking while Tyke played 20 questions.
  155. >What are you? Where are you from? Where's that? What's wrong with your legs?
  156. >He would have kept going had his mother not call you all to dinner.
  157. >Fluttershy and Angel shared a plate of vegetables while the rest of you had veggies with your venison.
  158. >You lean back in your seat and rub your satisfied belly.
  159. "So what do we owe ya?" you ask.
  160. >"How about we hold off on repayment," said Aada.
  161. >Works for you.
  162. >She gives you the living room for the night.
  163. >Fluttershy takes the couch while you get the floor.
  164. --
  165. >You're woken up early the next morning.
  166. >It's rediculously cold and the sun hasn't risen yet.
  167. >"Ready for work?"
  168. "What kind of work?"
  169. >This kind of work.
  170. >Two hours later, you're both stalking the pine forest around Talonsgrove.
  171. >Each of you equipped with an iron-tipped spear.
  172. >"Keep your eyes open, stay low, and stay quiet," instructed Aada.
  173. >She put a particular emphasis on 'quiet'.
  174. >You had come upon a small apple tree and decided to duck into a bush.
  175. >There were no apples on the tree, but Aada had brought a few to try and bait an animal.
  176. >You had been waiting for quite a while.
  177. >You got bored and started asking questions.
  178. "Why do you have a spear? Why don't  you use your beak and claws?"
  179. >"Because I'm not a savage."
  180. "Couldn't you just fly and swoop down from above?"
  181. >"Do you want to learn or not? And I thought I told you to keep quiet."
  182. >You sigh.
  183. >No wonder you don't go hunting.
  184. >This sucks.
  185. >A few minutes pass.
  186. >You need to take a piss, but there's a rustling on the forest floor nearby.
  187. >You peer through sticks of the bush and spot a stag walking over and begin eating your bait.
  188. >A nudge from Aada is your cue.
  189. --
  190. >There are only a few apples so you need to make this quick.
  191. >You slowly crawl prone backwards out of the bush to make as little noise as possible.
  192.  >You try to apply what you think you know.
  193. >Aada wasn't exactly clear on the procedure.
  194. >You slowly crouch walk around the bush.
  195. >The snow crunches softly beneath your boots.
  196. >The stag's ears rotate for signs of danger.
  197. >When you get a clear line of sight, you slowly stand to make your move.
  198. >You could thrust it with your spear, but getting that close without alerting it would be damn near impossible.
  199. >Aada watches from the bush as you cock your arm back, spear at the ready.
  200. >You take a step and bring your arm forward.
  201. >The stag hears your foot hit the ground and it throws it's head up, looking right at you.
  202. >The stag turns to run as you release the spear.
  203. >You miss.
  204. >Aada flies from her cover like lightning and drives the spear into the hind leg of the fleeing animal.
  205. >It shrieks and rears forward.
  206. >It bucks its hind legs back, hitting Aada square in the chest.
  207. >Unable to flee, it turns its sights on you, Aada's broken spear sticking from it's flank.
  208. --
  209. >It charges and you stick your hands out.
  210. "Oh sh-"
  211. >You grab its antlers, but it drives them into your stomach and throws you several feet to the side.
  212. >You see Aada stagger to her feet.
  213. >She no longer has a weapon.
  214. >And yours lies several feet away.
  215. >The stag charges again.
  216. >You dive and roll for your spear.
  217. >The stag is practically on you now.
  218. >You grab it and stick the end in the ground, the tip pointed towards the attacking beast.
  219. >You close your eyes and look away.
  220. >The sudden weight of the stag impaling itself on your spear causes it to snap beneath the animal.
  221. >The stag falls to a heap on the ground.
  222. >And on you as well.
  223. >The spear impaled its chest, but it was still alive and kicking.
  224. >Aada took the chance to casually walk over and slash its throat with her claws.
  225. >The stag lies still.
  226. --
  227. "Get this thing off of me," you tell Aada, ennunciating each word.
  228. >Aada rolls her eyes and moves around the animal to your side.
  229. >She pushes on it with extra help from her wings.
  230. >You use your free arms to push it off your body and down to your legs.
  231. >You slip free and stand.
  232. >Your clothes now have red stains.
  233. "What happened to not using your claws?"
  234. >"I lost my better weapon."
  235. >Aada looked over your kill.
  236. >"Good job," she complimented.
  237. "Good job? We almost died!"
  238. >"Yeah. That went better than the average hunt."
  239. "Wait, what?"
  240. >"Yeah I failed to mention that Hinterland Stags are highly territorial and competitive and can be real brutes when provoked."
  241. "..."
  242. >"..."
  243. >Silence.
  244. "You suck."
  245. >"Says the one who needs this meat more than anyone right now."
  246. "Good point. What now?"
  247. >Aada pulled a knife from a sheathe around her hind leg and dropped in front of you.
  248. >"Skin it and clean it."
  249. --
  250. >The sun had just set when the two of you got back to Aada's home.
  251. >You follow her inside, carrying the skin and each carrying pounds upon pounds of venison.
  252. >Tyke was aware of the hunt and told Fluttershy, who looked after him during the day.
  253. >Apparently, griffon cubs don't go to school.
  254. >Aada shows you how to salt and preserve a lot of the meat.
  255. >She stores what they can't eat to sell later.
  256. >Dinner that night was practically a feast.
  257. >Aada took special care to set the dinner table right.
  258. >Nothing fancier than pewter plates, but this isn't a formal dinner, so who cares.
  259. >Tyke asks about your travels and more about where you come from.
  260. >After dinner, you be a good guest and help Aada with clearing the table.
  261. >Fluttershy offers to watch Tyke as he tromps into the other room.
  262. >"So do you think your butt can fend for yourself now?" asks Aada, collecting some plates.
  263. "Yeah right," you say, grabbing a few plates and goblets. "Perhaps if I get a little practice spear throwing I'll become a stone-cold killer such as yourself."
  264. >"It's not that I enjoy it," said Aada. "But because it's my job and a necessity to survive."
  265. >You drop them in the sink and begin washing them with Aada.
  266. "I was kidding. But I can see how your profession connects to your hunting proficiency so well."
  267. >Aada hands you scrubbed dishes and you stack them in the cabinets.
  268. >"Your... "wife" only eats plants, right? That must be hard."
  269. >You shrug.
  270. "Back home it used to be an uncommon thing to get a decent cut of meat. Especially in a town made up of herbivores."
  271. >"Well hopefully you remember me and decide to come back for more."
  272. "How do I forget the one who almost got me killed by a deer?"
  273. >The two of you share a laugh, which is cut short by a shriek from Fluttershy and Tyke.
  274. --
  275. >You and Aada race into the other room, to find Fluttershy and Tyke just sitting there.
  276. >"What's wrong?" asked Aada, prepared to defend her cub to the death.
  277. >You spot your guitar on the floor in front of Tyke.
  278. >Two strings are curled up to both ends.
  279. "Aw!"
  280. >You run over and kneel next to your mutilated guitar.
  281. >"I'm sorry!" cried Tyke. "I didn't know it would break!"
  282. "Calm down, Tyke. What happened Fluttershy?"
  283. >"Well he wanted to see what was in the case, so I show him. Then he started plucking the strings. I-"
  284. >Tears started to well up in her eyes.
  285. >"I didn't know it would snap."
  286. >You look at the floor to try and hide your smile.
  287. >You can't.
  288. "Relax, you two. I'm not mad. Although I'm slightly annoyed that I have nothing to do on the way home."
  289. >Aada walks over and cocks her head at the instrument.
  290. >She reaches a claw past you and plucks a string.
  291. >She smiles.
  292. >"Well, time for bed, Tyke," says Aada.
  293. >"Aww..." groans Tyke as he gets up and slinks to his room.
  294. >"So you two are leaving tomorrow?" asked Aada.
  295. "Correct."
  296. >"That's a shame. But anyways, have a good night."
  297. >Aada retires to her bedroom.
  298. >You lie down on a deer skin on the floor.
  299. >Fluttershy takes the couch again.
  300. --
  301. >You rise with the sun the next morning.
  302. >Fluttershy and Aada had been kind enough to cook while you played with Tyke.
  303. >When breakfast was over, Fluttershy left to the market to get food for the trip.
  304. >You were helping Tyke pick up around the house.
  305. >It was mostly your mess anyways.
  306. >Aada walked into the room.
  307. >"Tyke. Go play."
  308. >"Okay mom!"
  309. >Tyke flew out the door, long gone.
  310. >"Hey," said Aada.
  311. "What's up?"
  312. >"Want to know something?"
  313. "Sure."
  314. >Aada walked up to you and placed both claws on your chest.
  315. >She wrapped you in her wings.
  316. >"I don't have a husband."
  317. >You blink twice.
  318. "I- uh... I'm married."
  319. >"Oh, please. That timid little pegasus?"
  320. "Yes."
  321. >She pulled herself in closer with her wings.
  322. >She looks at you with half-lidded eyes.
  323. --
  324. >"You don't have to sacrifice the succulent flesh of animals to make her happy," she says.
  325. "That has nothing to do with it."
  326. >You go to push her away but she pulls tighter.
  327. >"You still owe me a repayment from earlier," she says.
  328. >You actually push as oppose to nudge this time and successfully force her off.
  329. "And how much is that going to cost us?"
  330. >"I want you to lie with me," she says.
  331. >You go to your pack in the corner and dig out your coinpurse.
  332. >She watches as you dump and handful of bits and drop them on the table beside you.
  333. "That should cover it."
  334. >"I don't want your money," she says. "I want you. That pegasus likes you for something. I assume it's in the bedroom."
  335. "Sorry, Aada. No can do."
  336. >She quickly flys over and wraps both forelegs around you and buries her face in your back.
  337. >"Fluttershy doesn't have to know," she says.
  338. >You feel your back get a little damp.
  339. >Aada sniffles.
  340. >"Please? For me? Tyke needs a father figure in his life."
  341. >You know what she's trying to do.
  342. >And it's working for the most part.
  343. >You grab her wrists and gently part them.
  344. "Sorry."
  345. >You turn around and face her as Fluttershy walks into the door, saddlebags full of groceries.
  346. >She instantly notices the distraught Aada.
  347. >"What happened?" she asked.
  348. >You throw your pack on your back.
  349. "We were just leaving."
