  1. >"Hey, Anon. What 'ya doin'?"
  2. >You look to the side and saw Rainbow Dash trotting up beside you.
  3. "Not much. Early morning run is all."
  4. >"Trying to get in some last minute practice, eh? I like that."
  5. "Yeah, pretty much."
  6. >You jog for a few minutes in silence, Rainbow keeping with you the whole time.
  7. >"You know you'll never win if you're this slow."
  8. "We'll see about that," you smile back at her.
  9. >Rainbow Dash furled her brow and jumped into the air.
  10. >She hovered at eye level, flying backwards at your pace.
  11. >"You think you can beat me? I'm the fastest thing in Equestria!" she boasted.
  12. >You roll you eyes.
  13. >Like you haven't heard that a hundred times.
  14. "Maybe in the air," you mutter, just barely audible.
  15. >"What was that, punk?"
  16. >Rainbow bumped you in the chest with a hoof.
  17. "Rumor has it, you lost the race last year."
  18. >"And what's THAT supposed to mean?"
  19. >She stops in front of you, forcing you to stop.
  20. "Uh... You're slow?"
  21. --
  22. >You step around her and continue your jog.
  23. >She runs up beside you.
  24. >"That's because I was fighting with Applejack the whole time."
  25. "You still lost."
  26. >"But I wasn't even trying!"
  27. "You still lost. And to Twilight no less."
  28. >You snicker deliberately to taunt her.
  29. >She jumps and bucks you in the shoulder.
  30. >You stumble to the side.
  31. "Ow! ... Heheh."
  32. >You rub your shoulder and continue jogging.
  33.
  34. >You make it home, Rainbow Dash still with you, albeit a little disgruntled.
  35. >You take a minute to catch your breath; Rainbow Dash as well, but not nearly as bad.
  36. >She was flying half the time anyways...
  37. >"So will we be seeing you this afternoon?"
  38. >You open your mouth to speak, but Rainbow cuts you off.
  39. >"Don't bother. You don't stand a chance anyways."
  40. >You shrug your shoulders and turn to go inside.
  41. >"Hey Anon."
  42. >You turn back towards Rainbow Dash.
  43. "Yeah?"
  44. >She extends a hoof.
  45. >"I know we haven't been on the best of terms, but may the best runner win."
  46. >You fistbump her hoof.
  47. >She smiles, but then her face contorts to disgust.
  48. >She covers her nose and takes a step back.
  49. >"Whoa, dude! Take a bath before then, would ya?"
  50. >Your shirt was drenched in sweat and you reek horribly.
  51. "That's the plan. See ya later, Dash."
  52. >You wave her off as she flies away.
  53. --
  54. >Bypassing Ponyville, you and Fluttershy make your way to the Running of the Leaves festival in Whitetail Woods.
  55. >A shower and some new clothes from Rarity leave you feeling absolutely fantastic!
  56. >The brilliantly warm colors of the leaves are accented by the pillars of sunlight piercing the canopy of the forest.
  57. >The view is made even more perfect in this equally warm afternoon air.
  58.
  59. >Your time at the festival was a great time.
  60. >There were your usual small-town country games such as bobbing for apples, horseshoes, and even a balloon vendor.
  61. >It seemed to be catered more towards children than the adults, but everyone still had a good time.
  62. >The 10-minute warning for the Running of the Leaves race itself was announced by Pinkie and Spike in a hot air balloon.
  63. >You work your way to the starting line and stretch out.
  64. >You catch stares from ponies in the audience and the other runners.
  65. >Apparently, seeing something's leg twist like that isn't a common sight around here.
  66. >You ignore them and continue on.
  67. --
  68. >At the 2-minute warning, the runners line up.
  69. >Applejack and Rainbow Dash were on the outside end.
  70. >You were between the middle and the opposite end from them.
  71. >Twilight stood next to you.
  72. >Fluttershy and Rarity observed from the stands.
  73. >"You ready to get your flank trampled, Anonymous?" called Rainbow Dash.
  74. >"Don't pay RD no mind, Anonymous!" called Applejack. "Good luck to ya!"
  75. >You give a quick wave to the the two of them and look at Twilight.
  76. "So I hear you beat Rainbow Dash and Applejack last year?" you ask, trying to make conversation.
  77. >"Yup," replies Twilight.
  78. >Awkward silence.
  79. "Fifth place?"
  80. >"Yup."
  81. "Could you lighten up a little? I'm just trying to be friendly."
  82. >"Everypony, to your marks!" announced Pinkie.
  83. >"I can do that," said Twilight.
  84. >"Get set!"
  85. >You all crouch down.
  86. >"GO!"
  87.
  88. >The runners take off.
  89. >You take one step, trip, and faceplant right into the dirt.
  90. >Twilight looks back at you, laughing her flank off.
  91. >The audience and the few runners who noticed bursted into laughter as well.
  92. >"Ooh! Faceplant! Anonymous is not off to a good start today, is he Spike?"
  93. >"Haha. Nope."
  94. >You sit up and look at your feet.
  95. >She tied your shoes together...
  96. >This means war.
  97. >Quickly, you retie your shoes, stand, and bolt after the other runners.
  98. >The few seconds you were down caused a massive gap between you and the rest of the pack.
  99. >'Oh crap. Oh crap. Oh crap. Oh crap,' you keep repeating in your head.
  100. >It was the very beginning of the race and you already have a massive handicap.
  101. >Time to kick it into high gear.
  102. --
  103. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OI9qcTwRN4
  104. >You pump your arms and legs faster to close the gap.
  105. >"Look! Anonymous is catching up to the pack!" commented Spike.
  106. >"He's running so hard, just look at that dust trail!" exclaimed Pinkie.
  107. >While you were mostly in the dust from the ponies ahead, your steps kicked up small clouds of their own.
  108. >In a minute or so, you mananged to catch up to and pass the first pony in front of you.
  109. >Doing good.
  110. >You slow it down so as not to exhaust yourself so quickly.
  111. >A few more minutes, a few more ponies.
  112. >You recognize the familiar dark purple tail in front of you.
  113. >You move to the opposite side of the path from Twilight just in case she tries something funny again.
  114.
  115. >Twilight spots you as you run by.
  116. >You close your eyes and stick your tongue out as you pass.
  117. >You suddenly go tumbling end over end once more.
  118. >You roll and stumble to your feet, losing a ton of momentum.
  119. >A few ponies pass, but at least you're not in last again.
  120. >You look back at a large branch that had been moved onto the path.
  121. "Damn it," you mutter to yourself.
  122. >Note to self: Don't take your eyes off Twilight.
  123. --
  124. >You focus on moving forward.
  125. >Once again, you slowly gain ground on the rest of the pack.
  126. >Your heart is beating quickly.
  127. >Your breathing grows hard and fast.
  128. >Twilight is casually trotting along.
  129. >You have a feeling she's just waiting for you.
  130. >You run up beside her and the two of you lock eyes.
  131. >Her horn glow with that all-too-familiar purple, sparkly aura.
  132. >Thinking fast, you flick the tip of her horn.
  133. >"Ow!", recoils Twilight.
  134. >With a swing of your hips, you bump her and knock her off balance.
  135. >She is unable to recover and she stumbles off the side of the road.
  136. >You laugh hysterically as you watch her trip over a stick and tumble end over end into a bush.
  137. >With that distraction out of the way, time to find Rainbow Dash and Applejack.
  138.
  139. >The path twists and turns as it goes.
  140. >You take a look to the sky.
  141. >You've been so distracted by Twilight and focused on moving to the front of the pack, you forgot why you're here in the first place.
  142. >Sure you were challenged to compete, but the real reason is the scenery.
  143. >The thundering of hooves on the dirt-trodden path shake the leaves from the trees.
  144. >The sun sometimes breaks the canopy of the trees that grew over the road.
  145. >The sunshafts look like water in the air, what with the shimmering heat, but also the shadows of the falling leaves casting small shadows on the earth below.
  146. >It's like a colorful, crunchy rain.
  147. --
  148. >It turns out, you're a little too immersed in the moment.
  149. >A hard charging competitor bolts past you.
  150. >Your little trance caused you to slow, allowing the others behind you to gain ground.
  151. >You snap out of it and catch up to the one who passed you.
  152. "Not today," you say aloud as you overcome him.
  153. >You round a corner, the other racer hot on your heels.
  154. >A long, flat stretch sits before you.
  155. >You squint your eyes and focus down the road.
  156. >In the very near distance, you spot two particular ponies running side by side and leaning into each other.
  157. "Whoa, they really are fast," you say to no one in particular.
  158. >The pony behind you looks up at you and raises an eyebrow.
  159.
  160. >The blue and orange ponies round another bend, disappearing behind the brush.
  161. >You pick up the pace just a tad.
  162. >The pony who was with you now fell back a few yards.
  163. >You run on the inside of the sharp corner to gain just a little more ground.
  164. >Without the slightest idea of what the hell just happened, you manage to find yourself on your back staring up into the canopy.
  165. >You would comment on how pretty it looks, but your face hurts too much to care.
  166. >The pony behind you runs by.
  167. >You press your hands against your face as the purple body of one particular unicorn hurdles over you.
  168. >You stand quickly and bump your head on a branch sticking out over the path.
  169. >You look back as you go and spot a rope dangling from between the leaves.
  170. "Learn to play fair!" you shout forward at Twilight.
  171. >"I didn't do it," she shouted back, a large shit-eating grin on her face.
  172. >Your irritation is mounting.
  173. --
  174. >So close.
  175. >You were so close to Rainbow Dash and Applejack.
  176. >You can still do this though.
  177. >Your chest hurts.
  178. >Your legs as well.
  179. >You push harder.
  180. >Twilight has begun galloping faster.
  181. >You pass the pony from before for the third time today.
  182. >He looks just as exhausted as you.
  183. >Twilight's opened quite the gap and even slowly gaining on Rainbow and Applejack.
  184. >And you slowly gaining on Twilight.
  185.
  186. >"Looks like it's gonna be a close one," announced Spike.
  187. >"You bet ya, Spike!" said Pinkie. "Applejack and Rainbow Dash are neck and neck."
  188. >"And look!" Spike pointed. "Twilight and Anonymous are right behind each other as well!"
  189. >"And gaining on Applejack and Rainbow Dash!"
  190. >Pinkie starts rapidly bouncing and tapping her hooves against the side of the balloon's basket.
  191. >"This is getting so exciting I can barely contain myself!"
  192. --
  193. >Applejack, overhearing Pinkie's shouting, looks over her shoulder.
  194. >She spots Twilight and yourself coming up on them.
  195. >"Howdy, pardners! Where y'all been this whole time?" she calls back.
  196. >Rainbow Dash looks back as well.
  197. >"Bahaha! What's the matter, Anon? Can't beat an egghead in a hoof race?"
  198. >And to think your patience had been stretched to its limit.
  199.
  200. >You've forgotten all about the pain in your legs and chest.
  201. >Now you just need something to rub in Rainbow Dash's face.
  202. >If only Twilight would let you freakin' pass her!
  203. >You weave side to side, but she keeps cutting you off.
  204. >Okay forget this.
  205. >With a quick burst of energy, you vault forward.
  206. >Twilight, in fear of being landed on, skids in a desperate attempt to slow down.
  207. >She barely avoids getting stepped on, and you getting a horn in the crotch.
  208. "Aha!" you proclaim in your small victory.
  209. >Twilight quickly shakes her disbelief and charges forward, her head down and her eyes closed.
  210. --
  211. >"Wow! What an amazing move by Anonymous!" commented Spike.
  212. "I got you now!"
  213. >Rainbow Dash looks back and spots you furiously pumping your arms and legs in an attempt to catch up.
  214. >"Ha! Fat chance!"
  215. >She quickly spreads her wings and gives one strong flap.
  216. >The push is enough to put her in front of Applejack.
  217. >"Hey! You said you wouldn't do that again!" protested Applejack.
  218. >"I'm not!" argued Rainbow.
  219. "You're gonna need it to keep up!"
  220. >You side-step as Rainbow looked over her shoulder and sprint forward.
  221. >"You ain't getting away that easy!" she yelled back.
  222.
  223. >As you moved around Applejack, Twilight bolted forward.
  224. >Her horn still forward and her eyes still closed.
  225. >"What in the hay?!"
  226. >Applejack jumped as Twilight's horn jabbed her flank.
  227. >She bumped into Rainbow Dash, pushing her to the side.
  228. >Rainbow growled and slammed back into Applejack.
  229. >Like a pinball, she bounced back and hit the side of Twilight's head.
  230. >As her head jerked to the side, a random purple beam fired out from her horn.
  231. >The stray bolt skinned Applejack's hat, twirling it around on her head.
  232. >It then flew right at you.
  233. >And shot you in the ass.
  234. --
  235. "What the hell!"
  236. >You yelped and jumped into the air.
  237. >With one hand you hold your bruised behind and try to keep pumping the other.
  238. >You accidentally backhand Rainbow Dash.
  239. >She bares her teeth and flaps her wings thrice more.
  240. >Applejack sees this stunt once more and aims to show Rainbow how useless her trying to cheat is
  241. >She easily catches up to you and Rainbow.
  242. >Twilight recovers from her hit by Applejack.
  243. >Upon seeing Applejack pull away, Twilight begins to panic at the thought of losing.
  244. >To you.
  245.
  246. >One final turn revealed a large banner, the word 'FINISH' in glorious bold red letters across it.
  247. >A set of bleachers on each side of the road held the spectators.
  248. >Your wife-to-be sat with her best friend.
  249. >Rarity cheered and clopped her hooves for her four friends.
  250. >Fluttershy gently waved a small pointed flag with ANON printed on it.
  251. >Twilight stole the chance and cut the corner on the inside, evening out with the rest of you without any extra effort on her part.
  252. >"It's a four-way tie for the lead!" shouted Pinkie. "Never before have we seen anything like this!".
  253. --
  254. >The four of you break the treeline and into the clearing where the finish line was.
  255. >The crowd was caught by complete surprise.
  256. >For one, they were only expecting one or two to be galloping up the path.
  257. >Now there was four within inches of each other.
  258. >Also, the extra two were not who they were expecting to be in the front.
  259.
  260. >Like a wave, each of you got a step ahead, but fell back again.
  261. >At this rate, it could very well be a four-way tie.
  262. >You and Rainbow Dash lock eyes for several seconds.
  263. >Each of you pour out your hearts into the final yards of the race.
  264. >Applejack spots the two of you step ahead.
  265. >She slams her hooves into the ground hard enough to leave shallow divots in the earth.
  266. >Twilight ducks her head and physically strains to hold her sprint as long as she can.
  267. >Without paying attention, she trips up on a small dip in the road.
  268. >She loses her balance and stumbles into Applejack.
  269. >Twilight slams into Applejack from behind, her shoulder in Applejack's flank.
  270. >It was enough to push Applejack into the lead.
  271. >Applejack crosses the finish line for the win.
  272. >You were side-by-side with Rainbow Dash.
  273. >Whoever got second was too close for you to tell.
  274. >Twilight finished a few steps behind you.
  275. --
  276. >Upon crossing the line, all four of you stumbled to a halt, gasping and choking for breath.
  277. >You walked a small circle to try to catch your breath.
  278. >Fluttershy flew from her seat and into your arms.
  279. >You barely saw her coming and spun around after you had embraced her.
  280. >She was squeezing you so tight it was more difficult to breathe.
  281.
  282. >A minute later and your breathing has come under control.
  283. >The other runners were crossing the line.
  284. >They too collapsed on the grass upon finishing.
  285. >You found Applejack, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity speaking off to the side.
  286. "Grats, Applejack," you greet as you walk up.
  287. >"Why thank ya kindly, Anon," she replied.
  288. >"Anon, we beat you so badly," Raiinbow Dash gloated with smirk.
  289. "We were less than a step apart! How is that badly?"
  290. >"Doesn't matter. You lost."
  291. "So did you!"
  292. >"Nope. I beat you."
  293. "We tied!"
  294. >"No we didn't. I won"
  295. "Why don't we ask-"
  296. >You take a quick look around.
  297. "Hey, where'd Twilight go?"
