  40.
  41. Traits:
  42. Magi Brilliant Intellect was among the wisest, but most cowardly of the Crystal Mages of the Old Crystal
  43. Empire.
  44. When Sombra rose to power, he toiled for him, creating more and more powerful instruments of war
  45.
  46. and torture, and as he saw his people suffer, his conscience bore the burden in shame. It was
  47.
  48. not long before the dark works he unleashed reached his own household. When his brother,
  49.
  50. Standing Gem rose his voice against Sombra, he too was silenced. Brilliant took in his brother's
  51.
  52. due wife. It was not long until the child was born, though burdened and saddened by the lack of
  53.
  54. the Heart, she died in the process. Brilliant took the boy, and, in a flash of insight, named
  55.
  56. him Last Hope. And dreamed up a scheme to end Sombra.
  57.
  58. So Brilliant began teaching the boy every night, while the eyes of  Sombra's soldiers and guards
  59.
  60. were not upon him. For seventeen years he taught the boy, training him in the ways of fighting
  61.
  62. evil, of undoing the most powerful of magic, of defending others. Brilliant crafted for him, in
  63.
  64. secret, a master shield, an artifact that was the masterpiece of all his years as a Crystal
  65.
  66. Magi. Bound with powers of light, shining gloriously, imbedded with eight gems of immense power,
  67.
  68. painstakingly crafted by Brilliant, he wrote "HOPE" on its front.
  69.
  70. Last Hope began his mission. To end Sombra and his army of evil ponies. Ready. Willing. Prepared
  71.
  72. to fight. His training complete, he took his shield and rushed into the city streets, enraged
  73.
  74. and furious, burning with righteous anger against the tyrant Sombra. The crystal ponies soon
  75.
  76. rallied into a great angry mob, marching to the Crystal Tower, calling for the ousting of their
  77.
  78. dark tyrant. Lost Hope blasted and dispelled every shadowbeast or corrupt magi that stood in his
  79.
  80. way, protecting the crowd even as they marched ever closer to the tower, till Sombra emerged
  81.
  82. from the palace gates.
  83.
  84. The ensuing battle lasted exactly three minutes, and was entirely one-sided. The shadow-mage
  85.
  86. entirely overwhelmed the idealistic young hero, throwing him around like a ragdoll through the
  87.
  88. city streets, forcing him to go entirely on the defensive. For every piece of magic he
  89.
  90. dispelled, five more made it through, for every attack he blocked, he was struck three times.
  91.
  92. As he was struck to the ground, the crowd gathered, their champion smashed on the pavement
  93.
  94. before them. He turned to them, waiting for someone to intervene, to say something. Nopony did.
  95.
  96. The crowd watched in fear as Sombra readied the spell that wound end him, striking him with a blast of shadow. He saw the crowd flee, someponies trampling others in their drive to escape. One image stood out in all this. A child, a young filly, dropping her doll, as Sombra's minions
  97.
  98. chased them through the streets.
  99.
  100. His shield's enchantments shattered out in every direction as the blast hit, though clearly
  101.
  102. warped by the interactions of the magic. He awoke in the icy waste, a mile outside the city, a
  103.
  104. thousand years later. Angry and bitter at his useless countrymen, he carved the words "RIDES
  105.
  106. ALONE" into his shield, purchased a cloak, and began wandering the new world.
  107.
  108. Brilliant, knowing his nephew had failed, gathered the eight enchantments, and scattered them
  109.
  110. throughout Equestria. For he knew his nephew was still alive, and someday may find need of them.
