  1. In 2401, several years after the Groombridge 34 incident, a TASEN exploration ship discovered a strange, unstable area of space.  It has been christened chaotic space, and it is an area where reality warps and bends, and madness advances and retreats like the tide.
  2.
  3. A system of roughly five hundred stars inhabits a spatially anomalous region of chaotic space.  This region has been christened ASG-1 (Anomalous Space Grid One).  Between these stars are networks of mysterious space-time gaps, each leading to its own unknown universe.  Most of the matter and entities to wander through these gaps are destroyed upon being subject to our laws of physics, but sometimes, they survive.
  4.
  5. Some are primitive nomads.  Some are extra-dimensional beings, apes and angels.  Others are violent armadas of steel and thunder.
  6.
  7. Occasionally, the unthinkable passes into our universe.  Massive abominations of writhing thought.  Memetic beings that can bend one's personal reality with a flick of the wrist.  Strange immortals which have conquered both death and time.  The list goes on.
  8.
  9. Upon discovering this mad realm of space, the crew of the TASEN ship was immediately debriefed and sent back on their mission.  In only six short years, three sets of skyhooks were created to secure these anomalies, contain the madness that is spewed forth, and protect the galaxy from the presence and knowledge of such horrors. A small fleet was re-purposed for work in high-risk environments and sent to accompany these skyhooks.  The flagship of the fleet is The SAS Ajax, an experimental Soyuz-class battle-cruiser, the first warship to have its own, self-contained jaunt drive.   The systems on this ship have been tailored to chaotic space, and the workings of the ship reflect the ocean in which it sails.  Certain systems are beyond all but the head of engineering, the captain sets course for invisible islands that only he knows of, and Command sends indecipherable orders that only the few on the bridge understand.

  11. In a universe of mysteries, a select few gamble amongst the stars.  This game of inter-dimensional Russian roulette puts the lives of countless beings in front of the gun.
