  1. >Finally reaching town, you slow your pace, exhausted from running all the way here.
  2. >The thoughts of doubt and what AJ said to you still linger in your mind.
  3. >Could Twi really not be your mother?
  4. >Is she really just some pony that decided to take care of you?
  5. >There's no way that's possible ri-
  6. >”Ow! Anonymous, do watch where you're going!”
  7. >Lost in thought, you had knocked into Rarity, herself and the fabric now on the ground.
  8. “Oh, sorry Rarity.”
  9. >You bend down and help her pick up the strewn fabric.
  10. >”Honestly darling, what's got you so preoccupied?”
  11. “Well, quite a lot, actually.”
  12. >She looks up at you quizzically.
  13. >”Oh? Do tell.”
  14. >You take a deep breath, and begin with this morning.
  15. “Well, I was helping AJ with the zapapple harvest, and afterward we ended up taking a break with a cold drink.”
  16. “After, I asked her if Twi was really my mom because of how different we are. She said she was, but she seemed like she was hiding something at first, and when I kept asking, she just stopped responding...”
  17. >Rarity, who almost now looks lost in her own daydream, nods in understanding.
  18. “So I ran back here, trying to find out if it was true.”
  19. >”I see.”
  20. >You pause for a moment.
  21. >Rarity was good friends with you and Twi, wasn't she?
  22. >They knew each other before you were born, and she's made almost all of your clothing for you.
  23. >There's no way she'd lie to you, right?
  24. “Rarity, Twilight IS my mother, right?”
  25. >She just nods and replies; “Of course she is, dear.”
  26. “Even though we look completely different?”
  27. >”Yup.”
  28. “And I'm at least twice her size...”
  29. >”Uhuh.”
  30. >Her answers seem rushed, almost like she's just trying to get you out of her hair.
  31. “Rarity, you're telling me the truth, right?”
  32. >Man, did that get her attention.
  33. >She stood up straight, and looked you in the eyes.
  34. >”But of course I am, Anon! Heh, what motive would I have to lie to you?”
  35. “I dunno, but AJ managed to, and she's the most honest one out of all of us.”
  36. >She starts to get nervous.
  37. >”Well, maybe she was just distracted! Of course she's your mother!”
  38. >This sure isn't helping your case.
  39. “Alright...you promise?”
  40. >”P-promise! Now, I'd love to stay and chat,” she begins, collecting the fabric and hurriedly trotting off towards the boutique. “But I really must be going!”
  41. >You sigh. Maybe Twilight really isn't your mom...
  42. >You head back to the house, even more doubtful than before, almost feeling a little depressed.
  43. >The pony that you've known your entire life, the one that fed you, took care of you, and loved you, might end up not even being your real mother.
  44. >Finally reaching the house, you open the door, greeted by your mom.
  45. >”Hey, you're back! How'd it go?”
  46. >You just walk up to your room.
  47. >”...Anon? Are you alright?”
  48. >Making it to your room, you shut the door behind you and fall into bed.
  49. >You just lie there, lying there like a lifeless lump.
  50. >A while passes before anyone comes up to check on you.
  51.
  52. >Knocks on your door alert you of someones presence.
  53. >”Anon, are you in there?”
  54. >You audibly sigh. Twilight opens the door, and trots to your bedside.
  55. >”Anon, what's got you like this? Did something happen while you were at Applejacks?
  56. >You just lie there.
  57. >”...Was it something I did?”
  58. >You roll over, looking at her.
  59. “No, it's just...”
  60. >She perks up, and looks at you quizzically, almost worried.
  61. >”It's just what?”
  62. >You sigh. This is going to hit her hard...
  63. “You aren't really my mother, are you?”
  64. >You can tell she's hurt by what you said, trying her hardest not to show it.
  65. >After a few moments of silence from the both of you, she speaks up.
  66. >”...I think it's finally time you learn about who you really are, Anonymous.”
  67. >She takes a seat next to you on the bed.
  68. >”It was almost 20 years ago now that I found you. You weren't very old, either; still unable to walk.”
  69. >”I had been experimenting with an ancient type of magic that even Starswirl had abandoned. It allowed ponies to create what he called an 'Multidimensional portal'.”
  70. >”Curious about what this magic was, and how it worked, I tried to recreate it for myself.”
  71. “And clearly it worked.”
  72. >”Well, yes, it did. An odd, almost portal like door appeared where I cast the spell, and upon opening it, I was greeted with a bleak, gray place. It was nothing like I had seen before.”
  73. >”Everything looked like it was ready to collapse, and it looked like nobody was there.”
  74. >She stops for a moment, starting to choke up.
  75. >”But then I heard a cry, and I couldn't help but go through this portal and try to find what it was that had .”
  76. >”It was you, and I couldn't just leave you there. So I did the only thing I could think of doing at that time...”
  77. >She looks over at you, tears now in her eyes.
  78. >”It was you, Anonymous. You were the small child I found.”
  79. >She stops, analyzing your response.
  80. >Which, at this point, was a mixture of many things.
  81. >Confusion, happiness, sadness, almost a small amount of hate.
  82. >So she had found you, clearly abandoned by someone, showing she cared deeply about you.
  83. >But what if you weren't abandoned?
  84. >Maybe whoever left you there was going to come back...
  85. >No, now you're just being naive.
  86. “So, out of care, you brought me back with you, and simply wanted what you thought was best for me.”
  87. >”Yes, exactly.”
  88. >”For the first week or so when I took care of you, I wasn't sure what how to care for you; you were so different from the rest of us...”
  89. >”But once Princess Celestia caught wind of what I had done, I thought she might take you away.”
  90. “But she didn't.”
  91. >”No; instead, she offered her help in raising you.”
  92. >”For the first year, you lived with her, and she took care of you like she would any other filly.”
  93. >”When you started to walk, and eventually talk, she gave me back responsibility, knowing you wouldn't be too much of a hoofful.”
  94. >”Over time, you eventually grew larger and stronger, and you quickly outgrew me. Rarity would make your clothes for you, and used to tease me about how you were chewing through all her fabric.”
  95. >”You were never shy, either. You quickly made friends, some you still have to this day.”
  96. >She was crying at this point. Clearly thinking about all of this made her quite sad.
  97. >You think you were starting to tear up, too.
  98. >”So yes, I'm not your biological mother. But I have raised you and loved you as if you were my very own, Anonymous.”
  99. >”I still love you, and no matter what happens, you'll always be my little colt.”
  100. >You blush lightly at that remark.
  101. “Mooom, you know I'm not a filly anymore...”
  102. >She laughs lightly.
  103. >”I know, Anon.”
  104. >You reach over and give her a hug.
  105. “I love you too, mom.”
  106.
  107. >Near the end of the day, dinner finally rolls around.
  108. >You went back to the farm after talking to Twilight, grabbing the bushel of zapapples you left there earlier.
  109. >With everyone at the table, you began eating.
  110. >About halfway through, you spoke up.
  111. “Hey mom? You said Celestia took care of me for the first little bit, right?”
  112. >”Yeah, why?”
  113. “And she has access to the royal library, right?”
  114. >She gives you a quizzical look; “Why are you asking me this, Anon?”
  115. “Well, I figured if I could talk to Celestia, maybe she would know more about where I came from, and maybe even find a way back.”
  116. >She's downright startled by what you said, and looks at you as if you were insane.
  117. >”You want to go BACK to that bleak place I found you in?”
  118. “Maybe I can find out more about my past and where I came from that way. Who knows, maybe I can even find my real parents.”
  119. >She's hurt by what you said; you can see it.
  120. >Way to go Anon, breaking the heart of the one who took care of you your entire life.
  121. >She just sighs, and answers you.
  122. >”I won't stop you if this is what you wish to do, Anonymous. Just remember, I'll always love you, and if you ever wish to come back, I'll be here with open hooves."
  123. >Spike just sits there in silence, unsure of what to make of this.
  124. >Finishing your food, you bring the plates to the kitchen, and go upstairs to begin packing.
  125. >The faster you can find out if what she said was true, the better.
  126. >As much as you knew she never lied to you, could you have really come from some other world?
  127. >All you knew for sure was Celestia would have the answers you're looking for.
  128.
  129. >Unsure of how much you need to pack, you grabbed a few days worth of clothes, some food, half of your zapapples, and all of the bits you had.
  130. >It wasn't much, but 300 bits can go a long way if you know how to spend it right.
  131. >Zipping up your bag, you hear steps behind you.
  132. >”Hey, Anon.”
  133. >Turning around, you see it's Spike.
  134. “Oh, hey. What's up?”
  135. >He stands there for a moment, then answers you.
  136. >”I'm coming with you.”
  137. >You laugh
  138. “You mean to Canterlot?”
  139. >”Of course, unless Princess Celestia moved or something.”
  140. “This trip isn't exactly going to be fun or anything.”
  141. >”I don't care. I can't take doing Twi's chores anymore, and this is the perfect excuse to get outta here for a bit.”
  142. “Well then, sounds like you're coming with me.”
  143. >Spike gets excited, and starts running off to his room.
  144. “Wait a minute, Spike.”
  145. “Try to pack light if you can; I don't know how long we'll be gone, so bring at least a few days worth of clothing and food.”
  146. >”Gotcha!”
  147. >He runs off to his room, and you can't help but laugh.
  148. >With you all packed, and him getting ready, you head to bed.
  149. >With the trip to Canterlot ahead of you, the best thing for you at this point is a good sleep.
