  1. >You spend the next few days working on your special arrangements.
  2. >The arranging was fairly simple:
  3. >Take a flower basket.
  4. >Take one larger plant, can be either an ornamental grass or big flower.
  5. >Put it in the middle.
  6. >Surround it with four to six smaller plants.
  7. >Make sure the colours and shapes look nice and accent each other.
  8. >And you were done.
  9. >That system could be applied to any kind of arrangement, from tiny pots to huge urns.
  10. >It was really that simple.
  11. >All you needed was the right colours.
  12. >Pain singed your leg again.
  13. >You had worked hard today, half the shop was ready for customers already.
  14. >Your gift for the Princess was also ready.
  15. >It was marvelous, considering you had little idea of what you were working with.
  16. >It was a hanging basket, with tiny white flowers flowing over the sides.
  17. >You weren't sure what this flower was called, you hadn't seen its like before, however, there were a great many of the flowers dotting the sparse foliage, and it gave the basket a feeling of an overflowing flower fountain.
  18. >The centerpiece was a variety of Iris that you'd never seen before, pure white insides with a touch of golden yellow around the edges.
  19. >Canterlot was big on white and gold, so the pure white flowers seemed like a suitable choice.
  20. >You had all six of them stowed away in the locked room behind the counter.
  21. >It was pretty exciting to work with flowers you'd never seen before.
  22. >Your old friend nagged at you for attention.
  23. >You decided to take a break.
  24. >You'll be ready for all the p0nies coming to check out your shop.
  25. >You hear a knock on the door.
  26. >Strange sound, hooves made it sound more like a 'clop' than a 'knock'.
  27. >You lock the door to your special gifts and answer the front door.
  28. >It's Twilight and Fluttershy.
  29.
  30.
  31. >"Hey Anon, we were about to have a picnic and wondered if you would like to come!"
  32. >"Uh... if that's okay... we know you're very busy."
  33. >You shift your weight onto your good leg.
  34. >There had been lots of work to do, you really hadn't seen your new friends, or even let anyone see you.
  35. >Your arrangements were supposed to be a surprise, after all.
  36. >You shut the door and lock it behind you.
  37. "If you insist, lead the way."
  38. >They smile as you double tap your leg to dismiss the pain.
  39. >It wasn't perfect, but the pain would subside enough so that you could function.
  40. >Your thoughts returned to better remedies.
  41. >No, you didn't have a problem.
  42. >The cane would be a suitable replacement.
  43. >No it wouldn't.
  44. >It would have to do.
  45. >The pair of p0nies led you to a park in town where the others were waiting.
  46. >Pinkie Pie was already laughing.
  47. >As you set yourself down, you take a look at the picnic setup.
  48. >Fruit, some pastries, more fucking apples, veggies, sandwiches... cupcakes.
  49. >You eye the cupcakes.
  50. >The others are talking about the upcoming Hearts and Hooves Day, about all the available colts and other nonsense.
  51. >Cupcakes.
  52. >You reach out and grab one with pink icing.
  53. >It’s still warm, and it’s delicious.
  54. >"Anon?"
  55. >"Are you alraight?"
  56. >You stop, mouth full of cupcake goodness.
  57. >A moment of silence descends on the picnic.
  58. "Cwuupcwurrks"
  59. >The group giggles at you and starts to eat.
  60. >You try a bit of everything, but avoid those damn apples like the plague.
  61. >You had enough.
  62. >The girls talk more about Hearts and Hooves Day, as well as the Princess' upcoming visit to P0nyville.
  63. >They also talked about what the Princess did on Hearts and Hooves Day, none of them seemed to know.
  64. >More eyes fell upon you.
  65.
  66.
  67. >"So what did you make to get the Princess to visit?" Rainbow asks.
  68. "A special gift."
  69. >"Is it a floral arrangement?" Rarity next.
  70. "A special gift."
  71. >A few more guesses shoot forward, some of them close, some of them...
  72. >"A balloon with silly faces on it?  Ooh I love this game!"
  73. >...not so close.
  74. "You'll have to see when I give her the gift."
  75. >That was the point, the nature of the gift was supposed to be a secret, to entice p0nies to check out the store.
  76. >The curiousity you saw felt good, that plan had worked hook, line, and sinker.
  77. >The group sat in frustration; they really wanted to know what your gift was.
  78. >You shrugged.
  79. >"Oh, Anon."  Twilight moved to change topics.
  80. >"Have you thought about who you want as a special somep0ny for Hearts and Hooves Day?"
  81. >Suddenly you feel cornered.
  82. >You hadn't thought about it.
  83. >Suddenly the memory of Fluttershy seeing you off to sleep comes to mind.
  84. >Maybe she'd do?
  85. >But picking a 'valentine special somep0ny' wasn't a light decision, was it?
  86. >And they were crayola horses, for christ's sake.
  87. >You feel more edges of your sanity crumble.
  88. >For a dream, it felt too real.
  89. "I've been busy preparing the shop.  There's a similar day where I'm from, the busiest day of the year."
  90. >"So you don't have a special somep0ny?"
  91. "No. I'll be too busy."
  92. >The mood seemed to darken a bit.
  93. >Smooth move, Anon.
  94. "We'll see how it goes when the day arrives."
  95.
  96.
  97. >A bit while later the picnic breaks up and you find yourself back at the Nursery.
  98. >A special somep0ny.
  99. >The phrase floats in your thoughts while you examine it.
  100. >You figure it was the same as Valentine's, with all the lovey-dovey nonsense.
  101. >Those days you rolled in cash.
  102. >The entire thing was a scam, a 'celebration of love'.
  103. >The celebration should happen a little bit every day, not just because everyone else is.
  104. >You grimace.
  105. >You wish you were dead already.
  106. >This dream land was starting to get to you.
  107. >You'd lived your life not knowing if you would wake up the next day.
  108. >That made life easier.
  109. >You didn't have to invest in things, because you knew that you'd be buried sooner rather than later.
  110. >Now that you weren't sick anymore, the finish line was farther off.
  111. >You knew that this was all just a dream.
  112. >A damn fantasy.
  113. >Another lie to make you feel better.
  114. >You slump down on the stool behind the counter.
  115. >You wanted to hate this place.
  116. >It wanted to love you.
  117. >It wasn't real.
  118. >Your hands strangle your cane.
  119. >It couldn't be real.
  120. >It was just some bullshit dream.
  121. >You were dead.
  122. >This wasn't really happening.
  123. >You tapped the ground with a foot, to distract yourself from wanting to slam Titan down on the counter.
  124. >You hated this place.
  125. >It loved you.
  126.
  127.
  128. >Your eyes bolt open.
  129. >Hearts and Hooves Day.
  130. >Your lead up has been busy, but it was finally here.
  131. >Lovey-dovey extravaganza.
  132. >You grimace.
  133. >Pain lanced your leg, you didn't want to move.
  134. >You grab Titan and tap your leg twice.
  135. >The familiar icewater sensation pours through your bones.
  136. >Shivering, you stand up to get ready.
  137. >You'd done a number on one of Rarity's creations, a black pair of kind-of-khaki pants.
  138. >The pants were laden with pockets, and various other straps and designs.
  139. >You'd added three straps to the right leg that could tie around, anchoring your cane properly to your leg.
  140. >Being crippled meant learning new ways to deal with life.
  141. >Even learning how to add straps to new pairs of pants.
  142. >At least the straps worked properly.
  143. >Hopefully Rarity wouldn't mind you adjusting them to fit your needs.
  144. >At least the crotch was generously spacious.
  145. >You'd slept in a bit, you had done everything needed in order to open up and be ready last night.
  146. >All you needed to do was open the door.
  147. >After washing up and eating a fruity breakfast, you hobble downstairs.
  148. >You could see p0nies outside, trying to peek in.
  149. >A few pointed out the plants you had set up.
  150. >An excited customer was a paying customer.
  151. >You strap Titan in.
  152. >Go time.
  153.
  154.
  155. >You unlock the door and step outside.
  156. >The p0nies gathered seemed eager to see what you had set up.
  157. "Not before the Princess arrives, folks."
  158. >A few minutes and a tour of your garden later, fanfare announces the arrival of the Princess.
  159. >Right on cue.
  160. >The Princess arrives on the scene and every p0ny bows low.
  161. >You feel disrespectful, but kneeling wasn't your strong suit.
  162. "Princess Celestia, welcome to the Ponyville Nursery."
  163. >And with that, you open the door and lead her inside.
  164. >Half the town also floods in behind you as you show the Princess your work.
  165. >You had a bit of everything set up, from decorative pots, vases, and baskets, to single flowers and bundles.
  166. >She seems impressed, and happy to see the rest of Ponyville enjoying what you have set up.
  167. >The main attraction was ready, however.
  168. >You lead Celestia to the counter and unlock the back room.
  169. >Perfect.
  170. >You walk out with the flowing basket, the tiny white flowers sway softly as it moves.
  171. >All eyes are on the gift.
  172. >You hear a few jaws being collected from the floor.
  173. >By far your most impressive work.
  174. >Fit for a Princess (or Prince!).
  175. >Princess Celestia studies the gift closely.
  176. >This was the make-or-break part.
  177. >She notes the colours, the flow from the center Iris to the outside, and the smaller plants cascading downwards.
  178. >"Anon..."
  179. >You're tense.
  180. >If she didn't like it, this party would be over very fast.
  181. >"...this is a wonderful gift.  Thank you."
  182. >She takes the basket from your hand and beams brightly, showing it to the rest of the crowd standing behind her.
  183. >A cheer erupts.
  184. >They love it.
  185.
  186.
  187. >The store is busy for the rest of the day, and you periodically go to the back to award a p0ny with a present when the excitement seems to wind down.
  188. >The energy in your store bustles, everyp0ny wants a new gift for their significant other.
  189. >You make a note of who the presents go out to.
  190. >One of them was a strange mare named Lyra, she was shopping with another p0ny introduced as Bon Bon.  They kept eyeing your hands, almost appearing envious.  Weirdos.
  191. >Next was the colt from the clock store.  You were onto him.  He said he had somep0ny special in mind for such a gift.
  192. >Applejack's brother Big Mac had picked up a simple bundle, and you added your gift to his purchase.  He said something about how his shoopie doopie moopie would be happier than ever.
  193. >Pinkie Pie had shown up for your opening, and it looked like she had bitten off a few flowers to eat before buying.  You remembered some of the food you'd seen had had flowers in it.
  194. >Maybe some side business would be p0nies wanting a snack.  You hadn't thought of that.
  195. >The bubbly p0ny shot off like a cannonball out of the store, happier than ever at her new gift.
  196. >As things began to wind down, a new unicorn had sauntered in with a pair of huge goggles.
  197. >Insanity opened its gaping maw.
  198. "Can I help you find anything?"
  199. >"Well dude, I got no idea what to get my special somep0ny, any ideas?"
  200. >Before you could answer, a pegasus tumbles through the door.
  201. >"Vinyl Scraaaaatch?  Are you in heeere?"
  202. >Both of the mare's eyes googled in different directions.
  203. >"Uh, right here Derpy."
  204. >Derpy.
  205. >You nearly fell over.
  206. >"Can you help me out?"
  207. "I think I can.  Just a moment."
  208. >You pick up the last gift for the day and present it over the counter.
  209. "A gift.  Enjoy Hearts and Hooves Day."
  210. >The goggles come off as Vinyl's red eyes examine the arrangement.
  211. >"Dude..."
  212. >"Vinyl thoshe flowers!  Octaviuh is gonna looove thoshe!"
  213. >You smirk.
  214. >"You didn't hear that, okay?"
  215. "My lips are sealed."
  216. >The odd pair once again saunters out of the shop.
  217. >Another satisfied customer.
  218. >Things had really quieted down now, all the p0nies were out doing whatever it was p0nies did.
  219.
  220. >You decide to close up: it was starting to get dark out.
  221. >You doubt that you'd get any more customers for the day, the big bonanza was over and your best stuff was sold and gone.
  222. >You'd made a mountain of cash.  Gold coins.
  223. >That's rich.
  224. >You felt rich too.
  225. >Your leg bothers you as you move to lock the door.
  226. >You weren't sure about how many times your cane's new power was supposed to work, but it had run out during the busy day.
  227. >You winced a bit as the pain was brought higher up in your attention.
  228. >Shut eyes.
  229. >Deep breaths.
  230. >Open eyes.
  231. >Short breaths.
  232. >Repeat.
  233. >You unhooked Titan from its place on your leg.
  234. >You supposed Twilight could use company.
  235. >Stepping outside for a walk, you notice a few of your plants hanging and decorating different spots in town.
  236. >They looked nice. You'd put in a lot of effort to make a lot of pots, so these plants would last quite a while if they were taken care of.
  237. >You were a minor celebrity: a few couples complimented you on your talent.
  238. >At least reputation wasn't in short supply.  The Princess trick had worked.
  239. >Indubitably.
  240. >Finally making it to Twilight's library, you notice light coming through the windows.
  241. >Fluttershy answered the door.
  242. >"Oh-oh, hello Anonymous," she greets you.  You were very unexpected.
  243. >Walking inside, you notice Twilight reading one of her books.
  244. >"Oh, hey there Anon! We were just enjoying each other’s company."
  245. >You swallowed hard on the implications.
  246. >"N-Neither of us have... a s-special somep0ny..."
  247. >You knew the type.  Singles had it rough in that respect.
  248. "Well if I'm interrupting..."
  249. >"No no, you should stay," Twilight motions to a pillow on the floor.
  250. >You gingerly sit yourself down.
  251. >Twilight seems to be deep in thought.
  252. >"I saw how busy it was at the Nursery," Fluttershy says to you.  "You must be tired."
  253. "Plenty of time for rest when I'm--" ...
  254. >Dead.
  255. "...now that the busiest day of the year is over."
  256. >"Oh, and... I also saw the gifts that you gave out... they were very beautiful..."
  257. "It’s what I do Flutters, my raison d'être."
  258. >You accented the French a little bit.
  259. >She seemed to understand.
  260. "Now that Hearts and Hooves Day is over, I can try to settle into a routine.  Honestly... I've never really made any plans before with my... predicament."
  261. >Twilight seemed to snap back to the library.
  262. >"It's not over yet, you know."
  263. >A sinking feeling descends upon your jimmies.
  264. "What do you mean?"
  265. >"Well, neither of us have a special somep0ny, maybe we should spend the rest of today together?"
  266. >You look at Fluttershy, who looks crestfallen.
  267. >You stammer.
  268. >No, no no no.
  269. >You didn't want to hurt Twilight's feelings, and you didn't want to hurt Fluttershy either.
  270. >The rock crushed you against the hard place.
  271. >"B-But..." Fluttershy trails off.  "I-I don't have... a special s-somep0ny either..."
  272. >"Hrm."  Twilight thinks on this conundrum for a moment.
  273. >You squirm and rustle in your seat.
  274. >"Maybe we can all share."
  275. >You wished you were dead.
