  14.     The ragged column of Ponyville survivors is lead through the winding countryside toward the city by Crystal and former Equestrian troops. Just ahead of you, you can see Applejack and Twilight next to each other, arguing in furious whispers. Twilight is stressing cooperation, while Applejack insists on escape.
  15.
  16.     “I hate it when friends get all bamboozled.” You turn and see Pinkie hobbling along beside you. Her face is screwed up in a big, cheeky grin. “Applejack and Twilight are some of the best friends I've ever seen, why would they want to spend all their time arguing instead of working together? Seems pretty silly to me!”
  17.
  18.     You continue in silence for a little while longer, watching the two of them squabble. Pinkie's smile fades. “Sometimes, Sunny? I think the worst thing about this whole doozy of a disaster is what it's doing to ponies who should be the best of friends. Even if everything turns out for the best and we save the day, what good's saving the day if you can't enjoy it with people you care about?”
  19.
  20.     >We need to keep the group from falling apart
  21.     >Survival is more important than everyone staying friends
  22.     >Disagreements are natural

  36.
  37.     You nod your agreement. "The Elements of Harmony are holding these ponies together, if the six of you fall apart to infighting the others will follow. We need to keep everyone working together."
  38.
  39.     "Whew" says Pinkie, letting out a sigh of relief. "I was afraid for a minute there I'd have to keep everyone friend all by myself! Thanks, Sunny!" She gives a sly glance back over to Twilight and Applejack. "Those two are gonna work out their differences SO HARD it'll make their heads spin!"
  40.
  41.     "No talking!" shouts one of the Equestrian soldiers shadowing you. His grimace convinces you he's serious, and you and Pinkie quiet down.
  42.
  43.     You arrive at a simple palisade wall built across the road. Captain Bracken approaches the gate. “Open up! We're returning from patrol with a sizeable prisoner contingent.”
  44.
  45.     The gates don't open. No one emerges to respond. Bracken lets out a frustrated hiss. "Where are your soldiers, Spearpoint?"
  46.
  47.     Before the Crystal Pony commander can respond, a voice pipes up. "Here's your soldiers, bootlick!" Pots go sailing over the wall, and where they land they explode into smoke with cacophanous noise.
  48.
  49.     Panic overtake the column as loud whiz-bangs and flashes of light fall amongst you. Through the smoke you see a crystal pony mare with a red scarf leap atop the gate from behind the wall. "Ponies of Equestria, with us! Away!"
  50.
  51.     "That's what I'm talkin' about!" shouts Applejack, bucking a pegasi soldier out of her way.
  52.
  53.     "Wait!" shouts Twilight. "We need to see Shining Armor! We can still work this out!"
  54.
  55.     >Let's follow them!

  93.
  94.     "Not if Bracken hangs us, we can't!" you yell. "Everybody! Follow that pony!" Twilight scrunches up her face in frustration, but she follows Applejack in clearing a path for the others.
  95.
  96.     The gates creak open as the soldiers either side struggle in the chaos to right themselves. Your survivors rush through to the other side. In the confusion you see one of the crystal pony soldiers try to level a spear against your people, but you lash out quickly and accurately to knock him head over heels.
  97.
  98.     Fluttershy comes up behind you, struggling with Rainbow Dash. "Please," she pleads, looking terrified. "I can't run with her."
  99.
  100.     You lean over to help her carry Dash, but the jostling seems to shake her awake and she bats you away. "I don't need your help!" she slurs out as she gets unsteadily to her hooves. "I can walk just fine." She immediately staggers over, requiring Fluttershy to push her back upright.
  101.
  102.     The crowd has thinned out and the smoke is clearing. You can hear Bracken ordering his troops to form back up and try to stop the escapees.
  103.
  104.     >Fine, then. Get through that gate!
  105.     >You don't, but Fluttershy does. Help me get her to safety.

  138.
  139.     "Are you kidding?" you say. "You're barely standing. We need to get out of here now!"
  140.
  141.     "I said I'm fine!" she shouts back, trying to take a few steps forward before faltering. "Get away from me!"
  142.
  143.     Fluttershy's terror only grows as soldiers begin emerging from the smoke and closing in on you. You realize you're out of time and throw your shoulder under Rainbow Dash, lifting her up. "Come on!" you shout, above Dash's protests, and rush for the gate. Fluttershy follows close behind.
  144.
  145.     You have to bowl over another soldier before you make it, but you do - the last ponies to pass through the palisade. The gate swings shut behind you.
  146.
  147.     "That won't hold 'em long," says the crystal pony with the scarf. "I'm Red Dawn, with the Imperial Resistance." You look around and see she's among a dozen or so other crystal ponies wearing red scarves. "We need to get you and your people somewhere safe."
  148.
  149.     "No arguments here," says Applejack. "The sooner we're away from that lot, the better."
  150.
  151.     "I'm sorry," interjects Rarity. "Did you say the 'Imperial resistance'?"
  152.
  153.     "Against the tyranny of Princess Cadance and her new pegasi enforcers!" Red Dawn shouts.
  154.
  155.     "Rebellion among the ranks," Sombra whispers to you. "Interesting. Cadance has exerted her strength too late. Her weakness has already fostered an uprising among her slaves."
  156.
  157.     "I'm only agreeing with this so we can find out what's going on and make contact with my brother," Twilight grumbles. "He would never have let captain Bracken hurt us, I'm sure."
  158.
  159.     "Enough talk," says Red Dawn. "We need to get going. Stay off the road and follow us!"
  160.
  161.     With that, the revolutionaries set off into the fields and your ponies rush to follow them. Dash finally manages to struggle off of your back. "I didn't need your help!" she snaps, stumbling after the others.
  162.
  163.     Fluttershy comes up next to you, looking at the ground. "Thank you. I don't think I could've..." her voice peters out, and she follows after Dash.

  176.
  177.     You follow the revolutionaries through fields and along creeks until they bring you to an inconspicuous farm at the edge of the city. It seems abandoned, but once they're sure the way is safe they bring you over to a particularly large barn.
  178.
  179.     "Password," a muffled voice on the other side demands.
  180.
  181.     "Curacao," Red Dawn replies. The door opens and your people eagerly pile in.
  182.
  183.     "Welcome to our base of operations," says Red Dawn. Inside the barn you see dozens of Crystal ponies at work stockpiling supplies, drawing up maps, writing up papers and more.
  184.
  185.     "Well I'll be," remarks Applejack. "Y'all have a whole army in here."
  186.
  187.     "Just a small one," says Red Dawn. "The Imperial crackdown only happened a few days ago, right as the trotting dead crisis started. There was a massive public outcry, but Cadance clamped down on it with her new pegasi troops. We'd have been leaderless and disorganized, but Rebel Yell pulled us together to found the resistance."
  188.
  189.     "That's quite a story," says Twilight, clearly skeptical. "I still won't believe Cadance could ever be a tyrant, though."
  190.
  191.     "Believe what you like, Twilight Sparkle!" declares an imperious voice from an upper hayloft. "Your precious Cadance has inflicted misery upon the good ponies of the Crystal Empire all in the name of securing her new order!"
  192.
  193.     The mane six look surprised to hear the voice, Twilight in particular. "Trixie?"
  194.
  195.     A blue unicorn mare jumps down to the ground floor, fixing Twilight with a stern expression. "That's right, Sparkle. I was performing in the Crystal Empire when Cadance began her brutal quarantine. I've seen her cruelty first-hoof! Without Rebel Yell, I would be rotting in her dungeon as we speak."
  196.
  197.     >What has Cadance been doing?

  223.
  224.     "What's Cadance been doing that's so terrible?" you ask.
  225.
  226.     Red Dawn spits into the hay. "Soon as word reached us about the dead moving around and attacking people, Cadance had Shining Armor put a forcefield over the whole Empire so nothing could get in or out. Then these Equestrian Army deserters showed up to act as her personal enforcers when her own troops started getting uncomfortable enforcing the quarantine."
  227.
  228.     Trixie snorts in anger. "They're the only non-crystal pony allowed in the empire! The others were rounded up and sent to the dungeon. Your precious foal-sitter has instituted martial law and a curfew, and is threatening even more severe action in the name of "public safety"."
  229.
  230.     Twilight's about to start arguing when Pinkie, of all ponies, pipes up. "Hold on a minute!" she yells, grabbing everyone's attention.
  231.
  232.     She points her remaining forehoof at the bedraggled train of Ponyville survivors behind you all. "Not that getting into a big mean shouting match isn't fun, but shouldn't we take care of our friends first?"
  233.
  234.     The Elements of Harmony look to each other with embarrassment. "Of course, dear," replies Rarity. "This is a discussion that can wait."
  235.
  236.     "We can let your people rest here in our base until we can come up with something more permanent," offers Red Dawn. "Bring them in, and we'll find them food and somewhere to rest."
  237.
  238.     "That's mighty kind'a ya," says Applejack. "We might as well get t'work gettin' everyone sorted out, Sunny."

  245.
  246.     You're in the base of the Imperial Resistance, where dozens of crystal ponies organize a revolution against princess Cadance. Weapons, revolutionary posters and literature, food and other supplies are being piled all over the barn, and revolutionaries work in groups plotting their next move.
  247.
  248.     Your own ponies are mostly off to the side, looking bone-weary and downtrodden. Hardly speaking, most just stay seated and glumly watch the crystal ponies work.
  249.
  250.     Rainbow Dash has taken up a position in the hayloft, looking out a window, while Fluttershy sits as close as she dares. Twilight and Applejack are talking to several of the revolutionaries. Rarity is examining the revolutionaries' supplies. Pinkie Pie is doing her level best to raise spirits, albeit she's not having much success.

  338.
  339.     "I want to know more about what's going on in the Crystal Empire," you ask. "Were there any warning signs before Cadance cracked down?"
  340.
  341.     "No, nothing like that," says Red Dawn. "Everything was fine, until one morning all anyone could talk about was news that the rest of Equestria was covered in dead ponies attacking and killing the living. Then a few dead ponies around the Empire got back up and tried to attack people. The guards put them down."
  342.
  343.     "Trixie was in the street at the time," says Trixie. "Performing a simple show of magical talent, when ponies started pouring our of their homes in a panic, all talking about the end of days. Some even called for a resumption of the thousand-year sleep, in hopes of escaping the disaster!"
  344.
  345.     "Cadance appeared and promised everyone we'd be okay," says Red Dawn, bitterly. "Then these Equestrian pegasi showed up and landed all over the tower. When she came out again, they were her new honor guards and she ordered the raising of the shield and the quarantine. All non-crystal ponies got dragged into the dungeons."
  346.
  347.     Trixie shudders. "Trixie was chased through the streets like a wild animal! When common citizens tried to protest these arrests, the guards attacked them!"
  348.
  349.     "It would've been a massacre. Then Rebel Yell appeared. He used smoke bombs to distract the guards and let the crowd get away safely. Some of us followed him, and we've been following him ever since."
  350.
  351.     "The Great and Powerful Trixie has observed the guards since then. They arrest anyone suspected of harbouring dissent, and the number of bodies the guards have been burning... it far exceeds the number that happened to be dead at the time the crisis began."
  352.
  353.     >Who is Rebel Yell? How did he found the resistance?

  409.     "Who is this 'Rebel Yell', anyway?" you ask.
  410.
  411.     "A great man," says Red Dawn, becoming starry-eyed. "He predicted this day would come, but nobody listened to him. He organized us against Cadance's tyranny, taught us how to make and use smoke bombs, is training us to overthrow the monarchy..."
  412.
  413.     "He is resourceful and cunning, for an earth pony," Trixie admits. "Charismatic, as well. He has a way with the crowd. Trixie finds it strange how he knew Cadance would become an oppressor, and how he was so prepared to organize a revolutionary movement on such short notice. He took a protesting mob cowering from spears at the palace gates and made of them an organized rebellion in the heart of tyranny."
  414.
  415.     "He's truly talented. He'll save the Crystal Empire, and we're going to help him make it happen."

  439.
  440.     "Of course" exclaims Trixie. "We naturally gravitate to where our talents are most suited."
  441.
  442.     Red Dawn gives her a sour look before turning back. "Rebel Yell put us in charge of this cell. It's one of the largest ones, so it's a big responsibility, but we're just average, everyday ponies here. The 'chain of command' is pretty short, everyone does what they can."
  443.

  476.     You're in the base of the Imperial Resistance, where dozens of crystal ponies organize a revolution against princess Cadance. Weapons, revolutionary posters and literature, food and other supplies are being piled all over the barn, and revolutionaries work in groups plotting their next move.
  477.
  478.     Your own ponies are mostly off to the side, looking bone-weary and downtrodden. Hardly speaking, most just stay seated and glumly watch the crystal ponies work.
  479.

  502.     The two of you move away to a quieter corner of the barn. "I've been asking about the situation here in the Crystal Empire," says Twilight, looking back to Applejack and the crystal ponies. "It's... not good. I don't understand, the Cadance they're describing sounds nothing like the one that I knew. She's like a sister to me."

  538.
  539.     Twilight grimaces. "This has to be some kind of misunderstanding, and letting a bunch of hot-headed, armed hooligans run around trying to 'liberate' the Crystal Empire is just going to make things worse. Someone's going to get themselves killed!"
  540.
  541.     "Trixie says the guards were rounding up non-crystal ponies. Says they've been burning bodies outside the palace."

I'm sure we could set things right." She turns to you, a glint of desperation in her eye. "Please, Mortimer. It's not that I don't want to protect ponies too, but if we don't attack the root causes of this crisis none of us are going to survive. All she seems to care about is finding somewhere safe we can hide and ride out the storm, and damn the consequences for the rest of Equestria!"
  598.

  761.
  762.     You get in amongst the Ponyville ponies. Many seem too dismal and disheartened to even look at you. Constant fear and loss has taken its toll.
  763.
  764.     Two familiar fillies walk over to you, Sweetie Belle and Applebloom. "Hey, Sunny!" says Sweetie Belle. "I've never seen a revolution before! What's gonna happen? Are these ponies gonna fight princess Cadance?"
  765.
  766.     "Sweetie Belle, can ah talk t'Sunny alone fer a minute?" You catch Applebloom's glum tone, and so, apparently, does Sweetie Belle, who settles down and gives her friend a nod. The two of you walk a short distance away from the others.
  767.
  768.     "Sunny..." Applebloom begins, looking down at her hooves. "Ah saw y'all shoot Twist when onna them changeling monsters grabbed her up. She was a goner, right? Once that thing bit her, she had no chance?"
  769.
  770.     You struggle for words. "The child is equal to the truth," Sombra advises. "Your squeamishness is unbecoming."
  771.
  772.     After a few moments of silence, Applebloom nods. "Ah thought so. Nobody else saw y'all do it, they think Twist just fell behind and got et. Ah won't tell anyone. Just wanted t'know... would you do that t'anyone what got bit? Even Applejack and me?"
  773.
  774.     >I'm sorry, I'd have no choice.
  775.     >You're not going to get bitten, I promise.

  799.
  800.     The two of you rejoin Sweetie Belle, who looks relieved. "About time you two came back! These revolution ponies are kind of scary."

If we'd listened t'her with Luna who knows how many we'd'a lost while escapin' Canterlot. She wanted us t'go with Bracken and risk a hangin' just so's she could talk to her big brother! And what about Caramel? We left him with her t'look after and he became one'a them monsters!"
  1218.
1219.     You meet her steely gaze with a serious stare of your own. "And what about what Twilight's lost, Applejack? Spike's gone, Luna's gone, Celestia's missing - which might be worse. Didn't you wonder what went through her head when Time Turner died? Don't you know she'd have done whatever she could to save Caramel, if she was able?"
  1220.

1439.     You're in the base of the Imperial Resistance, where dozens of crystal ponies organize a revolution against princess Cadance. Weapons, revolutionary posters and literature, food and other supplies are being piled all over the barn, and revolutionaries work in groups plotting their next move.
  1440.

1539.     Before dealing with Rainbow Dash, you turn to Fluttershy. "How are you holding up?"
  1540.
1541.     She sniffles. "It's been... harder, to get by. There's a lot of pain in my heart, so many dead, even the children haven't been spared..." She shakes her head. "I'm sorry. I tried to be strong, but it just made me cold. I just want my friends to be safe, and I feel so helpless to protect them."

1591.     Without saying a word, you spread your hooves around Fluttershy and pull her into a hug. She seems surprised at first, but then settles into you, resting her head on your shoulder. Soon, you hear the sound of her sobbing, and feel the wet touch of tears against your neck.
  1592.
1593.     The two of you sit like that in silence for a minute, still and quiet, the world below seemingly far away. Fluttershy's sobs are the only sound as you gently run a hoof through her mane.
  1594.

1675.     You stretch a hoof out toward Rainbow Dash. She looks at it, as if uncertain what it is. Staring, silent.
  1676.
1677.     Then, something seems to shift in her head, and without speaking she comes over to join the two of you. She nestles up to Fluttershy and wraps her hooves around her, pressing her own welling tears into her friend's coat.
  1678.
1679.     There they lie in the hay, beyond words, beyond anger and pain, with only tears and each other. You pull away once you realize they'll be fine together now. Fluttershy opens one eye as you gently back away toward the stairs. She doesn't speak, but you understand.
  1680.
1681.     When you reach the bottom, you see Pinkie waiting for you. She holds up a hoof to her lips, miming "shush", before smiling and quietly bounding away.

  1695.
1696.     You're in the base of the Imperial Resistance, where dozens of crystal ponies organize a revolution against princess Cadance. Weapons, revolutionary posters and literature, food and other supplies are being piled all over the barn, and revolutionaries work in groups plotting their next move.
  1697.
1698.     Your own ponies are mostly off to the side, looking bone-weary and downtrodden. Hardly speaking, most just stay seated and glumly watch the crystal ponies work.
  1699.

  1846.
1847.     "Yes, well... I don't want to sound unkind to my beloved sister, but I don't think she really appreciates what's going on yet." She pauses in her accounting of a pile of canned beans. "Partially my fault, I suppose, for keeping things from her. Still, I couldn't bear to tell her the truth."
  1848.
1849.     Rarity stops her work for a minute to look at you directly. "Sunny, can I ask you a favor?
  1850.
1851.     "Applejack puts a lot of trust in you, and I believe her trust well-placed. Despite only knowing you a short time, she cares for you. She knows that if anything were to happen to her, you would look after Applebloom."
  1852.
1853.     Rarity looks over to the crowd of Ponyville ponies. You can see Sweetie Belle and the other children practicing their song lines, as Cheerilee conducts. At one point, Pinkie comes over and starts singing along, to general laughter. Rarity gives a faint smile.
  1854.

1890.     You hesitate, looking down at your hooves as you think of your reply. Finally, when you can look her in the eye again, you say "I can't promise you that, Rarity. I swear to do the best I can and look out for her, but we've got a lot of ponies to look after here. I can't guarantee her safety."
  1891.
1892.     It's subtle, but Rarity seems to hollow out before your eyes, sagging and weakening. "I... I understand. Like I said, it's a lot to ask of someone, and we have so many responsibilities already... Thank you anyway, Sunny. I only hope it'll be enough to keep her safe."
  1893.

1932.     You give Rarity another look. You see the signs of stress and wear, the faded makeup, the fraying hair. "Rarity, if you're not feeling completely okay it's fine for you to say so."
  1933.
1934.     She only shakes her head. "There's no point in falling to pieces now. We're in a difficult spot, perhaps, but it's not even the worst one we've been in so far."

2025.     "So, what do you make of this 'Imperial Resistance'?"
  2026.
2027.     Rarity lifts a pile of scroll tubes up to a top shelf. "Well, they're well-equipped. I don't know who organized this whole outing, but they must've had considerable advance warning. Not to mention I find ideologues like Red Dawn somewhat uncomfortable company - and any revolution that puts Trixie in a position of authority, well..."
  2028.
2029.     "What about their accusations, though? Arrests, imprisonment, maybe even murder?"
  2030.
2031.     Rarity turns back to you with a shrug. "Terrible, no doubt, but surely every revolution says these things of their great enemy? Cadance is a lady of class and distinction, if I recall. I would counsel caution until we can discover the truth for ourselves."
  2032.
2033.     "She has cunning and caution," remarks Sombra with a touch of admiration. "She would have risen high in my empire."

The Crystal Empire is the first place we've come to where the dead haven't overrun civilization yet. That has to be worth fighting for."

  2163.
2164.     You're in the base of the Imperial Resistance, where dozens of crystal ponies organize a revolution against princess Cadance. Weapons, revolutionary posters and literature, food and other supplies are being piled all over the barn, and revolutionaries work in groups plotting their next move.
  2165.
2166.     Your own ponies are mostly off to the side, looking bone-weary and downtrodden. Hardly speaking, most just stay seated and glumly watch the crystal ponies work.
  2167.

2329.     Red Dawn and Trixie let you go gather the others. They all come, even Rainbow Dash who still seems sullen and unwilling to talk. "At last, off to meet the mysterious 'Rebel Yell'," says Rarity. "I do hope he lives up to his reputation."
  2330.
2331.     Twilight seems less than enthusiastic. "So long as we don't do anything rash. Let's use this chance to see the city for ourselves, okay?"
  2332.

  2336.
2337.     "All ready to go?" asks Red Dawn as she opens the barn door. "Come on then, we've got to be quick."

  2418.
2419.     You make your way over hills and fields toward the city proper. Trixie uses her spells to disguise your group as mere crystal pony peasants. "Speak to no one," she warns. "The illusions are flawed and might give way."
  2420.
2421.     The city itself seems untouched by the fire and blood that marked Canterlot, Ponyville and Cloudsdale. You see ponies going about their day to day business as though nothing were wrong.
  2422.
2423.     That's not all you see, however. Pegasi soldiers dot the rooftops, watching everything, and crystal pony soldiers patrol the streets in full battle armor. Once you're on the streets, you can almost smell the fear. Ponies move quickly, spending as little time outside as possible and avoiding eye contact. All conversations are hushed whispers.
  2424.
2425.     "This is what Cadance did to our Empire," Red Dawn mutters bitterly. "We haven't suffered like the other cities, but her tyranny is inexcusable. It's choking the life from us."
  2426.
2427.     "Sshh!" says Trixie, throwing up a hoof to stop the group. You hear screaming and see an earth pony burst from a cellar. "Please!" she screams, her hooves skittering over the cobbles. "Let me go! I didn't do anything wrong!" A squad of crystal pony soldiers erupts from the cellar, hot on her tail.
  2428.
2429.     All the ponies on the street freeze and press themselves up against the walls.
  2430.
2431.     "I just came here on vaycation!" the mare screams. "I didn't mean to cause offense! Just let me go!" Two pegasi drop down from above and level their spears at her to cut off escape.
  2432.
2433.     You can feel Applejack tense next to you. "Tarnation, they're gonna gut her like a fish!"
  2434.
2435.     >We have to do something!

2609.     Your group speaks not another word until Red Dawn stops in front of an inconspicuous home. "In here," she says. You get a good look at Trixie's face as you pass the two revolutionaries. She's staring passionlessly at some point a thousand yards away.
  2610.
2611.     Everything seems normal on the inside. Just a regular home. "An illusion," explains Red Dawn as she follows behind. She walks over to a round coffee table - and then disappears as she drops through it. "Watch your step, there's a short fall on the other side."
  2612.
2613.     Your group looks back and forth at each other. "Well, might as well get started," says AJ, stepping forward to drop through the hole.
  2614.
2615.     Pinkie follows, somewhat subdued. Fluttershy is holding back still more tears, shaking as she walks. Dash, on the other hand, appears unshaken.
  2616.
2617.     When it's just you, Twilight, and Trixie, Trixie pipes up to say "I'll be staying here to guard the entrance."
  2618.
2619.     Twilight pauses before jumping down. "Trixie... I'm sorry."
  2620.

  2680.
2681.     When you emerge, it's in the sewers. As with everything else in the Crystal Empire, they're immaculately designed, but still sewers. You can hear the sound of picks and shovels at work nearby. "Follow close now," says Red Dawn to your group. "It gets dark up ahead."
  2682.
2683.     She's not kidding. The sewer is just a dark shaft extending far through bedrock. All you have to navigate by is a distant speck of light - the source of the digging sounds.
  2684.
2685.     None of your friends say anything as you walk. When you reach the end of the tunnel, your vision finally adjusts enough to see in the dim light. You see ponies, many non-crystal and a good number of crystal, with hammers and shovels and picks. They're grinding forward through stone and dirt, extending the sewer tunnel far past its original boundary.
  2686.
2687.     As you arrive, work slows to a stop. You see the sullen faces of the diggers as they turn callous eyes on you and your group.
  2688.
2689.     "It's Red Dawn, sir," your guide declares. "We have the leaders of the group that crossed the shield here, including the Elements of Harmony."
  2690.
2691.     "Do you, now?" says a smooth, suave voice. You see a muscular unicorn caked in filth stand up to his full, impressive height. He drops a sledgehammer into the earth and turns toward you. You think his coat might have been white, before the sewer muck set in.
  2692.
2693.     He descends the rubble toward your group, pushing a pair of goggles on to his forehead. "My fair ladies. I'm sorry I am not sufficiently presentable for this meeting, but circumstances being what they are..."
  2694.
2695.     "No, it can't be," murmurs Rarity. "Fancy Pants? YOU'RE Rebel Yell?"
  2696.
2697.     "A nom-de-guerre. I thought my old monicker somewhat unsuitable to the task."

  2790.
2791.     "We're here to help with the revolution," you declare.
  2792.
2793.     "Darn right!" says Applejack. "The Crystal Empire's murderin' ponies in the street! Not gonna let that carry on."
  2794.
2795.     "Hold on!" protests Twilight. "We still don't even know what's going on! How can you know for sure Cadance is behind this? And what about my brother. Shining Armor?"
  2796.
2797.     "The monarchy is complicit in its entirety, I'm afraid," says Rebel Yell. "I should know. I held high office in Canterlot before this crisis erupted. On every level, the government of the princesses is to blame, from the infection affecting the dead to the tyranny in the Crystal Empire's streets."
  2798.
2799.     Twilight is gobsmacked. "But you- that's not-... how?!"
  2800.
2801.     The workers above pull themselves back down to ground level, sitting around Rebel Yell like an amphitheater audience. "Everything you have heard is true. Cadance has locked away your brother to maintain the shield that isolates her from the rest of the world. Her soldiers, loyal to her, harshly oppress the people to ensure internal security. All of this is *enabled* by the crisis with the infected dead which provides justification for her use of force."
  2802.
2803.     Pinkie starts to scratch her head. "Okay, now I'm lost. Who's the bad guy again?"
  2804.
2805.     "It is the system which allows the princesses to treat Equestria like their private experiment. The system which has given them the power to oppress to preserve their own authority above all else." His adherents look on with awe as he speaks. You get the feeling this isn't his first sermon to them.
  2806.
2807.     "If you would join us, we can liberate the Crystal Empire, live in peace, escape the horror that the rest of the world is descending into. It will be perilous, but with the Elements of Harmony we will have the power to take the fight directly to the oppressor."
  2808.
2809.     >How do you all know each other, then?

  2849.
2850.     "So you already know each other?" you ask, glancing back to Rarity.
  2851.
2852.     Rebel Yell nods. "Indeed. Lady Rarity was of considerable social standing in Canterlot, not to mention the Elements are individually and collectively famous for their exploits."
  2853.
2854.     "Fancy Pants is... was one of the most prestigious nobles in all of Canterlot," Rarity explains. "He had the ear of Celestia herself."
  2855.
2856.     "Not that it did much good," he says, with a sigh. "I was perfectly positioned to watch the disaster of her experiment in the Everfree coming, yet powerless to avert it."
  2857.
2858.     "You could have told me," says Twilight, looking stunned. "I would've listened."
  2859.
2860.     "Perhaps. But would you have believed me? And if you did, who's to say Celestia would not convince you she was in the right? How could I know you did not already know and tacitly approve of her methods?" Rebel Yell shakes his head. "I am sorry for the deception, my ladies, but if I had been revealed prematurely, the revolution would be over before it began."

  2930.
2931.     Rebel Yell stretches, his sinews straining as he warms up his cramped body. "I could foresee the disaster coming in the Everfree. The royal system was what had made such a disaster possible, perhaps inevitable. Cadance's tyranny is by comparison a minor manifestation. As such, I prepared for the revolution long before she revealed the evil in her heart."
  2932.
2933.     "There is a slipperyness to this one," Sombra urges. "Tread carefully. He is not as he appears, or worse still, he is."
  2934.
2935.     "But this is the past, and I tire of talking about myself," he says, with a smile. "You've come a long way from Ponyville if just to join us in fighting the good fight."

  2979.
2980.     "What's this experiment in the Everfree you keep talking about?"
  2981.
2982.     "Yes!" exclaims Twilight, apparently barely containing herself. "Please, Fancy- er, I mean, Rebel Yell, if you know something about where Celestia is or what she was doing-"
  2983.
2984.     "Celestia has abandoned us," he intones with solemnity. "I lack all the details of her experiment, but I know it was the culmination of a thousand years' careful planning. It involved forbidden magics of Starswirl the Bearded, and whatever she sought to accomplish, this plague of undeath is the result."
  2985.
2986.     Twilight's jaw hangs open in disbelief. "Please, it can't be true. It... it must have been an accident. She could be trapped there, or-"
  2987.
2988.     "Whether she succeeded or failed is no longer our concern," Rebel Yell turns to his followers. "What is left to us is to remake the world our Goddess has left us. We must tear down the princesses that have cursed us and raise up a new government, one of the common people! One which shall not discriminate, which shall protect us from this plague, not condemn us to it!" His miners cheer, with the enthusiasm of true belief. Red Dawn beside you screams her agreement.
  2989.
2990.     Fluttershy, just behind, whispers to you "Sunny, they're starting to scare me..."
  2991.
2992.     "Rebel Yell, please, the experiment," Twilight insists. "Tell me everything you know. I need to know!"
  2993.
2994.     Rebel Yell seems somewhat disappointed by the interruption. "I don't have all the details available here. We'll hold a meeting at our farm safehouse and review what we know, if you wish. For the moment, however, we should gather our strength. With your help, we can accelerate our plans for the liberation of the Crystal Empire!"
  2995.
2996.     At the next round of cheering, Applejack joins in. Sombra, the voice in your ear, notes "How quickly they became 'our plans'."

  3088.
3089.     "I'm sorry, Rebel Yell," you say, once the shouting dies down. "Our priority has to remain our own people. We've got around forty refugees at the farm we need to find somewhere safe for."
  3090.
3091.     Your words seem to bring Applejack back down to earth. "Er, yeah. Sorry, Mr. Yell, but first thing's first we gotta get them squared away."
  3092.
3093.     "Our revolution could always use fresh recruits," Rebel Yell suggests. "They'd be fighting for their future."
  3094.
3095.     Rarity quickly chimes in. "Many of them are much too young or far too old. Surely if you have our own... cooperation, you won't need another handful of recruits?"
  3096.
3097.     Rebel Yell considers this before nodding his assent. "The Elements of Harmony will be more than sufficient. We will find a safe house in the countryside to hide your people away, and in return you will wield your power for the people's revolution."
  3098.
3099.     Twilight bites her lip, engaging in a brief staring match with Applejack and Rarity before turning to you. "I... still think... we should try negotiating with my brother and princess Cadance - but for now I agree, for the good of the group."
  3100.
3101.     "Thanks, sugarcube," you hear Applejack whisper to her.
  3102.
3103.     "Then it is decided," declares Rebel Yell. "We will make for the farmhouse to sort out your people, and then march on the city!"
  3104.
3105.     "Wow," says Pinkie, raising her eyebrows as the rebels cheer. "That escalated quickly!"

  3200.
3201.     The group starts to fan out around you as the miners begin hiding their equipment. Rebel Yell walks up to you and extends a hoof. "I don't know if we've been formally introduced, Mr...?"
  3202.
3203.     "Sunny," says Applejack, beaming. "He's been a big help."
  3204.
3205.     "I can only imagine, to stand beside such an august group as the Elements of Harmony."
  3206.
3207.     "We think he might know something about the experiment," Twilight ever so helpfully volunteers. "His real name is Mortimer. He was a scientist in the Everfree before losing his memory."
  3208.
3209.     "Was he now?" says Rebel Yell, looking you over with fresh eyes. "Would you ladies mind terribly if I were to confer with Mr. Sunny privately for a moment? Red Dawn can escort you back out of the tunnel."
  3210.
3211.     The girls seem uncertain about leaving without you, but you let them go. "Watch out for treachery," warns Sombra. "The knife approaches your back."
  3212.
3213.     "So, you're 'Sunny' now eh, Mortimer old chap?" says Rebel Yell, slipping almost seamlessly into Fancy Pants. "What an exotic cover-story you've concocted. You always were a crafty one."
  3214.
3215.     "You know me?" you blurt out, surprised.
  3216.

3242.     It's true, I'm lacking a good system of vote resolution. Part of this is intentional to keep the thread moving swiftly (We've been here for what, eight hours already today?) and part of this is because it's difficult to come up with a good vote system on an imageboard. Normally it's not much of a problem, but if it grows into one I may whip something up for next time. We're almost done for today, though.

You tried to replicate with machines what she could not achieve with magic. What she had failed to achieve for a thousand years, what even her prized pupil Twilight failed to achieve."

He watches his followers as they disappear down the long, dark tunnel toward the light. "The new world will be wiser. Stronger. Criminal though you might be, you are intelligent and useful. Once the old order falls, you could play a hand in this new world."
  3326.
3327.     "Even my mind twirls at the possibilities," Sombra murmurs. "Yet his vision is shallow. He seeks power temporal, yet when princesses fall, power eternal is within reach."

3431.     "The Elements of Harmony and the ponies of Ponyville are my family now," you say, brushing past Fancy Pants. "If this is who I was before... it's not who I want to be anymore."
  3432.
3433.     "It's a lot to take in, I understand," Fancy Pants replies as he follows. "Consider my offer. We still have Cadance to overthrow, although her heavy-handed overreactions have made that simple enough. You have time to rediscover yourself."
  3434.
3435.     You rejoin the group aboveground just as night falls. Your party has grown too large to travel as one, now, so the miners and Fancy Pants disappear into the shadows. Trixie, still dulled, recasts her illusions, and Red Dawn leads you out of the city. There are guard patrols to avoid, but this time you escape without incident.
  3436.
3437.     Once you're in the woods, your friends begin to speak. "Fancy Pants has the right idea," says Applejack. "Crystal Empire's stable, peaceful, and safe. Dead can't get in, and s'long as we stay on top'a things on the inside we might finally be safe."
  3438.
3439.     "He didn't tell us ANYTHING about the experiment!" Twilight bitterly mutters. "He hardly knows anything! He doesn't even know what's happened to Cadance and Shining Armor! For all we know, they're being held hostage inside the palace!"
  3440.
3441.     Rarity tries to offer Twilight a consoling nudge, but is rebuffed. "Well, at least he's offered protection for our friends and family. Whatever the truth of this tyranny that's befallen the empire, at least they'll be safe."
  3442.
3443.     "I-I don't like the idea of fighting," begins Fluttershy. "but... if it keeps our friends safe... maybe I have to be brave..."
  3444.
3445.     Pinkie jumps in the air. "Hey! I never got to sing my song! And a one, and a two, and a-"
  3446.
3447.     "Trouble ahead," Dash mumbles. You stop, out of surprise as much as anything.
  3448.
3449.     You look across the last field to the farmhouse.
  3450.
3451.     "I don't see anything," says Red Dawn, squinting at the barn through the nighttime gloom.

  3483.
3484.     Your party approaches the barn stealthily. "How did they find us?" Red Dawn hisses. "We did everything right!"
  3485.
3486.     "Traitors within," Sombra hisses. "A rebellion built in a day crumbles within a week."
  3487.
3488.     "Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, to the rear," Applejack whispers. "Rainbow Dash, you've got the side door." She nods and breaks off from the group. "Twilight?"
  3489.
3490.     "Second story window," she replies, her horn already beginning to glow. "I'll provide support."
  3491.
3492.     "Right. Sunny? With me. Main door."
  3493.
3494.     The two of you stand either side of the barn's main door, with Trixie and Red Dawn just behind. "On three. One, two..."
  3495.
3496.     Trixie, unexpectedly, blasts open the barn door.
  3497.
3498.     Immediately, pegasi soldiers lunge forward and tackle you and Applejack to the ground.
  3499.
3500.     You hear a string of curses and a shattering of wood. It sounds like Dash was just hit.
  3501.
3502.     "Hang on!" shouts Twilight. "I'm coming down!"
  3503.
3504.     "Not today, Sparkle!" Trixie shouts as a bolt of lavender energy fires upward and knocks Twilight out of the air. She hits the ground hard.
  3505.
3506.     After that, it's all confusion and pain as the guard on your back grinds your head into the dirt. You black out.

  3588.
3589.     When you wake, it's all over.
  3590.
3591.     You're in the barn now, along with the rest of your friends, the Ponyville survivors, and the rebels.
  3592.
  3593.     The surviving rebels.
  3594.
3595.     Pegasi soldiers fill the room, their gold armour smeared with black to conceal its' glimmer. Dash is cursing and trying to get out from her one pinning her down, but otherwise you see the others have been forced to submit.
  3596.
3597.     Captain Bracken stands in the middle, over the bloodied but alive Rebel Yell. "You were good, Fancy," he says with a sneer. "Not good enough."
  3598.
3599.     "Trixie..." you hear Twilight moan through blood in her mouth. "What did you do? Why?"
  3600.
3601.     Trixie looks stunned, horrified into near silence as she looks at the corpses of the rebels who resisted. "You said you wouldn't hurt them!"
  3602.
3603.     Bracken smiled. "If they didn't resist. They did."
  3604.
3605.     "Traitor!" a voice screams. You crane your neck and see Red Dawn standing in the doorway of the barn. She has a knife. "Liar! Monster!"
  3606.
3607.     She rushes Trixie, who disappears in a flash of magic. Red Dawn lets out a frustrated scream, but continues toward the surprised Captain Bracken with the blade held aloft.

  3675.
3676.     Princess Cadance, dressed in her royal finery, stands over the burning body of Red Dawn.
  3677.
3678.     "Captain," she commands, her voice calm and even. "Have your men secure this barn. Properly, this time. I want none to escape, and certainly leave no remains."
  3679.
3680.     "A-at once, your highness," Bracken mumbles, before setting about his work.
  3681.
3682.     Twilight struggles to rise, but the hoof on her back holds her down. "Cadance! Cadance, it's me! Twilight!"
  3683.
3684.     She turns to see Twilight struggling in the dirt and hay and shakes her head. "Why, Twilight? I would have sheltered you as my own sister. You were as close to me as family. Why did you have to be here, with these traitors?"
  3685.
3686.     "I'm not with them!" she shouts, before remembering herself. "We're not with them! Bracken arrested us! We had to-"
  3687.
3688.     "Bracken was following my orders," says Cadance, staring Twilight down. "He would have brought you to me, and I would have set you free. Instead you fought him, joined the rebels trying to destroy my people from within... and broke my heart."
  3689.
3690.     Tears run freely down Twilight's cheeks. "Cadance... please..."
  3691.
3692.     "Take these ponies to the dungeon," she commands, as her soldiers bow. "Treason must be punished if any of us are to survive this storm. Let all know, the traitors will be hanged for their crimes, tomorrow!"

4035.     Rarity - solid, dependable, intelligent. Sombra likes her and so do I.
4036.     AJ - headstrong and willful. Impetuous. A potential liability but still intact. Powerful combatant and love interest.
4037.     Pinkie - good for morale, crippled.
