- The murky shadows of your dream obscures all, but there are pieces visible to you. Familiar pieces, inkling back into your memory.
- The voice is more clear this time. It's warm, motherly, authoritative. “Your team has made so much progress, and in so little time. You should be proud of yourselves.”
- “All thanks to your guidance, your highness,” you reply. Your voice sounds different. It feels like someone else's.
- “Don't be so modest. A demonstration would put your genius on display for all of Equestria to marvel at. You've earned it.”
- You feel hesitation. “Doctor Zephyr thinks we need more trial runs first. We've only tested it with inanimate subjects, sending a living-”
- “I've waited a thousand years for a pony to unlock the secrets of this book, doctor. I think that's long enough. Begin preparations at once.”
- The shadows close in once more. There is pain, and fear. Adrenaline as you run, your legs pumping like pistons. Something went wrong. A scream that pierces the sky, tears a hole in the air, begins to bleed. And above it all, the moon.
- No, wait. This happened in daylight. Why is there...?

- You start awake, almost falling off the bench. Your whole body is alive with aches and pains. Your vision is blurry and slow to right itself, and your ears fill with the ringing of the train trundling down the tracks.
- When at last your head clears enough that you can see, you look around the train carriage. Carriage number three, at the end of the chain. About a dozen ponies scattered throughout the cabin give you uncertain looks – half fearful, in fact.
- Outside you see the Equestrian countryside speeding by. You're in the mountains now. Not much further to Canterlot.
- >Look at the other survivors

- You look to the survivors – Big Mac's “dead weight”. A couple of stallions, a mare, a group of seniors and some children. All of them look pretty anxious to you, although in the early-morning darkness it's hard to make out their expressions.
- One of them, the pink-coated mare with the collar, the one you suspect might be connected to Rarity's dead friend, clears her throat uncertainly. “Um... Sunee. Wee have been waiting for yoo to week up. Wee were wandering eef...”
- A brown-coated stallion with a sand-timer cutie mark gets to his hooves. “No bloody point in beating about the bushes,” he mutters. “We saw you climb up on top of the carriage just before Cloudsdale went down, and then Big Macintosh fell off! What happened?!”

- You look the group over. "You really want to know?" They hold their silence, and you sigh.
- "Big Macintosh thought you were... the dead weight of the group. He was up there trying to unlock the carriage."
- "That's a lie!" A caramel-coated stallion leaps to his hooves. "Big Mac'd never do anythin' like that! He was like a brother t'me!"
- "Settle down, Caramel," the other stallion grunts, before turning back to you. "So you expect us to believe you managed to take Big Macintosh in a fight? He's a blood walking tank!"
- "Eet ees not so unbeliefable," the pink-coated mare suggests. "He ees beeg, he could fall easily."
- You nod. That more or less summed it up.
- The brown stallion curses under his breath before looking at you. "Well, it's not us you have to explain yourself to. It's Applejack."
- Everyone begins looking uncomfortably away from you.

- "I'll tell her the truth," you croak out, rising up from the bench. "She needs to know."
- The brown stallion nods, but Caramel scowls. "Applejack'll give you what you deserve, murderer. Apples don't forgive easy." You ignore him and sidle out of the compartment.
- You weave through the crowded carriages between the end of the train and the engine. The ponies therein seem a little calmer, a little more hopeful than you recall. They think the worst is behind them, that they're heading to safety.
- Once you reach the front of the train you see the Elements of Harmony are already assembled, watching the train make its way through the mountains. The darkness of night is slowly lifting as the sun approaches the horizon. “Ah, 'bout time ya got up,” Applejack remarks, a note of concern in her voice. “You'n Mac musta had a rough go of it at the end there.”
- “We're coming up on Canterlot shortly,” says Twilight. “Hopefully the chaos hasn't spread that far, and we can find out what's been keeping Celestia from replying to my letters.”
- “Hopefully there still IS a Canterlot,” Dash mutters darkly.
- “Rainbow Dash!” exclaims Rarity. “Don't say something so horrid! We have to hope for the best for Canterlot and the ponies living there.”

- Applebloom bolts awake. "What's goin' on?"
- Applejack isn't listening. Even her friends are too shocked to intervene. "Ah can't believe you," she snarls, circling. "After all this time, after all you've done fer us, why?"
- "I'm so sorry," you say, struggling to stand. "I didn't mean for it to happen, but he wouldn't-"

- Rainbow Dash tackles Applejack to the ground, struggling to hold her in place. "Get him outta here!" she snaps, as they wrestle. "Applejack, you need to cool it, okay? Cool it!"
- "What's goin' on?" says Applebloom, visibly shaking now. "Where's Big Mac? Applejack, what's happenin?"
- Applejack replies with a strangled, anguished yell.
- "Come on, dear," Rarity mutters under her breath. "We need to give her room to breath."
- You're lead into the engine compartment by Rarity and Twilight. They look back to where their other friends contend with Applejack. "So is it true?" Rarity asks, evenly. "Big Macintosh really did try to cut loose the third carriage?" You nod, and she sighs. "Just when we were hoping this nightmare might be over..."

- The train rounds the corner. You look back down the carriage where Applejack's stopped struggling - everyone's far too distracted. "Sweet Celestia," Dash murmurs.
- You turn and get an eyeful for yourself.
- Canterlot's seen better nights. Fire and smoke are visible billowing above the city. Many of its proud spires are toppled or damaged, and even from this distance you can see blood and carnage on open plazas and along the base of walls.
- “This place looks even worse than Ponyville,” you hear Dash remark from the passenger compartment.
- “Until it exploded,” offers Pinkie. Rainbow Dash pulls a face at her.
- “At least none of them could fly in Ponyville."
- Sure enough, as you squint into the rising dawn gloom, the first tendrils of daylight illuminate tiny specks buzzing around Canterlot like flies on a corpse. Some of them stagger about the air as if drunk, others list slowly and aimlessly. None seem living.

- "Canterlot looks finished," you say, shaking your head. "Should we even stop?"
- Twilight gives you a desperate look. "We need to find princess Celestia! She's the only one who can fix this mess, even if Canterlot's a mess right now."
- "Besides," adds Rarity. "Maybe things aren't as bad as they appear?" She doesn't sound too convinced. "I mean, there aren't TOO many of the flying ones..."
- As you watch, the swarm buzzing around Canterlot starts to move. Toward you.
- "The train!" Twilight exclaims, horrified. "They must be attracted to the noise! We're too heavy to outrun them all..."
- "Then that means we need to get ready to repel boarders!" Dash exclaims, jumping into the air. "Twilight, you need to protect the engine! Without that thing we're toast!"
- She nods. "Rarity and I can handle that, but I can't guarantee coverage for the other carriages."
- "Then ah guess it's up t'us," says Applejack, rising to her hooves with a glint of determination in her eye. "No use arguin' if the dead kill us all first. Fluttershy? Pinkie Pie? You two say here'n look after Applebloom'n Sweetie Bell'n all the rest." The two mares nod. "Dash? Stranger? Y'all are with me."

- "I'll take the third carriage."
- Applejack gives you a grimace. "In that case ah'll be up here in the first carriage, far away from you as I can stand." She pulls Applebloom over, who still doesn't know what's going on.
- Dash looks between the two of you and nods. "Then I've got the middle." She kicks a lockbox, that opens to reveal your myriad weapon collection. "Arm up and let's do this!"
- You grab a pair of shotguns and run for the back of the train. When you hit the third carriage you can already see some of the dead flyers listing just outside the windows, looking for gaps.
- The two stallions from earlier jump up. "What in the blazes is going on?!" shouts the brown one.
- "Nevermind that Time Turner," Caramel growls. "What're you doin' back here, murderer?"
- One of the dead ponies slams into the window and manages to get a hoof through. You blast it off with one of the guns. "Saving your hides, is what," you growl.

- "Here," you say to Tim Turner, throwing him one of the shotguns. "Make yourself useful and cover the far side of the carriage."
- Caramel snorts. "You even held a gun before, doctor?"
- "First time for everything," he snarks back before taking position near the far end. "Just be ready to get any that make it inside the carriage, we don't need a cross-fire in here."
- "The rest of you keep your heads down!" you shout. The children and the elderly huddle together in the middle of the carriage. You, Caramel and Time Turner spread out to cover more of the windows. "Looks like we might be getting the worst of it," Caramel remarks grimly.
- As if on cue, two more dead pegasii slam into the windows, trying to force their way in. The children scream as you and Time Turner fire. The firs two drop, but this encourage the rest. They' hit like a swarm of angry bees, battering against the windows, growling and groaning.
- One of them gets in and past your guns. Caramel tackles it to the ground. "C'mere, sue-ee!" he yells and they set to rolling and fighting.
- You keep firing. The flock isn't quite so thick as you'd feared. "I think we've got this!" Turner shouts. Caramel lets out a pained scream before bucking his opponent hard back out the window.
- "I think we're losing them!" Turner yells, ignoring Caramel. "We're pulling away!"
- You stop firing. It's true, the remaining dead pegasii can't keep up any longer. You turn over and see Caramel, clutching a bleeding wound on his shoulder. "Close one, huh?" he remarks. "Little monster bit me! Just took a bite right outta my shoulder! That's sick!"
- >Sorry Caramel, but you're done for.

- You see a lot of shot-out windows on your way back to the front, but no casualties. The ponies look scared now. You see families huddled together, children curled up under seats.

- The train emerges from the last tunnel, passing under the gate (which remains blessedly open) and makes for the train station. As it approaches, you notice the train station encircled with a thrown-together barricade, and you see some of the first living ponies of Canterlot so far – Royal guards, looking exhausted and harried, manning their ramshackle walls. “Train coming in!” they yell out, as you pass.
- “At least the army's still holding together,” says Twilight with palpable relief. “Maybe princess Celestia's been tied up coordinating the defence.”
- “If she has, she hasn't been doing the best job of it,” Rarity remarks with a frown. “I don't want to sound ungrateful, but I'd had higher hopes for a sun-goddess.”
- The train pulls into the station, which lies at the middle of a fortified city block. You see no civilians, but soldiers man the walls and rooftops. Uniformed unicorns maintain a powerful shield bubble overhead, keeping out the flyers. Once the train comes to a rocky stop, guards start forming up outside.
- “Ah don't think we can rely on the army fer protection,” Applejack mutters to the group. “They're hardly holdin' this here square'a Canterlot, ferget the rest'a the city.”

- "The army's got a better chance of fighting those things than us," you say. "It'd be worth our while to work together."
- AJ gives you a nasty look. "Ah don't need anyone's help t'protect my own, stranger, and it ain't like they've done a bang-up job with Canterlot."
- "That's not fair, Applejack!" Twilight protests. "Canterlot is harder to defend. They're doing the best job they can."
- “Ho there,” comes a voice from outside. “Captain Longsnout, Canterlot Guard, commander of quarantine zone Apollo. Please, declare yourselves.”
- “I know Longsnout!” says Twilight, opening the cabin door. “It's Twilight! Twilight Sparkle! I'm bringing in refugees from Ponyville!”
- You go over to the door and peek outside. A dozen guards brandishing spears back up a sallow-faced captain. “I can't really recommend it,” he continues. “We've already got too many to protect within the barricade as it is, and the other zones haven't checked in.”
- "Well there must be SOMEWHERE we can go," Rarity grumbles with a pout.
- "Nowhere safe," replies the guard captain. "And I can't forward you to the rest of Canterlot. This whole district's quarantined. Tell you the truth, the whole city's quarantined."

- OP 04/05/13(Fri)21:37 No.9623079
- "Where are the princesses, then?" you ask.
- "Yes!" Twilight exclaims "I need to find Celestia as soon as possible!"
- Longsnout sags. "I'm afraid I don't have much of an answer for you. Celestia went missing just before this whole crisis started, and Luna's been all over the city fighting. She's hard to pin down, maybe we could-"
- “Captain!” a panicked voice yells from afar. “They're hitting the north barricade! Too many for us to hold off!”
- Longsnout dons his helmet. “No more time to talk. Get your people to that warehouse, on the double!” He points to an abandoned-looking building attached to the station.
- A purple aura alights around Twilight and she hovers to the ground. “Sunny, get these ponies where they need to be. I'll handle the barricade.”
- “Then you'd better stop all your sitting around!” Dash shouts back down the carriages. “Move it people!”
- You leap to the ground and make a break for the warehouse, the ponies in the train following in your wake. Out of the corner of your eye you can see the trotters swarming the barricade wall, climbing up over their own fallen.

- You burst through the doors of the warehouse, wary in case any more dead should be waiting for you. Thankfully, there aren't. There's a large open space, a second-story walkway running along the walls as well as an office, and some thoughtful pony nailed boards over all the windows and back doors.
- “Not exactly homey,” remarks Rarity as she comes up beside you. “Still, I suppose it's better than nothing.”
- “C'mon, make room!” Dash grunts as she shoulders past Rarity, Pinkie held up in her hooves. “We need somewhere for Pinkie to rest. What've they got?”
- Fluttershy hovers in, scanning the room. “Over there.” She points to some folded up cots. “We can set those up for her and the others. Come on.” The rest of the group begins filing in after them.
- After a few moments, Twilight and the Captain join you. Purple lighting is coursing up and down Twilight's body and she's breathing heavily, but you see no injuries. “I threw them back, for now,” she explains. “They're tough. And there's... a lot of them.”
- “Your people should have a chance to catch their breath, at least,” the Captain explains as he heads back to the door. “Don't get comfortable. This isn't permanent. We'll try to find princess Luna for you as soon as we can, but our priority has to be holding the quarantine."
- "I understand, Captain. Thank you." Twilight turns back to you as Longsnout leaves. "We've got a lot of work to do, Sunny. And not enough time to do it in." She shakes her head. "There's always a deadline."

- "Hey Sunny," Applebloom says, her voice grim. "Mah sister tried t'tell me what happened, but ah think ah heard enough t'figure it out fer myself. Mac was tryin' t'cut some ponies loose, weren't he?"

- "It's just a little hot in here," he insists, none too convincingly.
- "He's exhibiting signs of a fever," Twilight explains. She pulls over another book and begins to scan the contents. "I'm hoping regular treatment for an infection will prove effective, but this isn't our top priority at the moment. We can't just wait around until Longsnout finds Luna - we need to get to the palace and find the Elements of Harmony."

- Twilight lifts a journal over, filled with her notes. "I'm trying to keep track of everything we see. If we're lucky, a pattern will emerge that'll explain everything. In the meantime, princess Celestia and the Elements of Harmony are our best bet."

Even if it has, I think with my magic we can infiltrate it and retrieve the elements. I just need someone to watch my back out there."

- "Excellent!" says Twilight, who makes for the door. "Stay close, I don't want to lose you out there."

- "He'll be fine," Twilight rather firmly insists. "He just needs to stay close to me, that's all."
- Rarity seems to want to say more, but she holds back. "Good luck..." she says, instead.
- The guards at the barricade pull aside a cart being used as a gate to let you pass. The street beyond is thick with broken, rotting corpses. Twilight wrinkles her nose. "Yuck... better apply some invisibility, just to be safe."
- Before you can ask what she's planning, she disappears, and so do you. "Follow the sound of my hooves!" she explains, and you do your best, although it's a thoroughly disconcerting experience.
- You walk a short distance through Canterlot's winding streets. Finding the palace isn't hard. It towers over everything else, drawing you onward. The dead you do encounter ignore you. "So, they must use some sort of visual confirmation," Twilight remarks. "Even the ones without eyes. Fascinating."

- You set off at a run in the direction the scream came from. "We can't help anyone if we get killed chasing screams!" Twilight yells after you. "Sunny! Urgh!"

They're already struggling under the weight of the dead, who bite and beat at them with their hooves. One of them, a young Mare trying desperately to fight her way free of the pile (and bleeding from several bites) lets out another full-throated scream.

- She snaps to a halt, but when her face turns around toward you her eyes are streaming teas. "I know..." she whispers. "But I don't have any choice."
- Twilight's horn flickers and the two of you turn invisible again. You continue up the road in silence, up to the gates of the palace. They've been battered open.
- "I know how to teleport from this spot to the library," Twilight explains. "Stand close, and we can get to the vault from there."
- You follow her directions (as best you can, being invisible), and a strange sensation of being rolled up and squeezed through a straw follows. When you emerge on the other end you're visible again, and in what looks to be an expansive (if untidy) personal library.
- Twilight's there, Spike still sleeping on her back despite everything. "The vault's not far, come on." She sets off toward the doors. "Once we find the Elements we'll finally be able to make some progress."
- >What's our backup plan if the Elements don't help?
- >Do you have any idea how to contact princess Celestia yet?

- "What's our backup plan if the elements don't work on the infection?"
- "They'll work," Twilight insists. "Trust me. They always do."
- You're running through the halls, now. A dead pony comes shuffling out of a side room, but Twilight blasts it back almost casually. "Okay," you say. "But let's say this time they don't. Like... say the infection's too strong, or-"
- "Look, we might not know HOW to use the Elements to solve this crisis yet," Twilight tersely concedes, "but they're the most powerful magic available in all of Equestria! We'll figure something out." The two of you keep running. "I'll figure something out."
- You skid into what looks like a throne room, with many stain-glass windows, most of them shattered. "Come on," Twilight says. "The vault's in the back."
- The remaining windows catch your eye. You notice a lot of them have Twilight and her friends in them.

- "That's an interesting window," you say, nodding toward one with a stain-glass drawing of Spike. "What happened there?"
- "Hm?" Twilight notices where you're gesturing, and frowns. "Oh. That window..." She sighs.
- "I guess I shouldn't be sad. Spike saved the Crystal Empire from the evil King Sombra. Who knows how many ponies he saved from being enslaved?" Twilight turns to the sleeping Spike curled up on hr back and gives a soft smile. "He was the hero then, not me.
- "It's just... Celestia had asked me to defeat Sombra myself. She said it was a test, to see if I was ready to advance my studies. I thought letting Spike help was the right move, but... when we came back, she took me aside and told me I wasn't ready. I'm still her best student and she was still really glad we saved the Crystal Empire, but..." Twilight shakes her head. "It all feels like such a long time ago."
- You feel an itch at the back of your mind. Some of this story's familiar, if only you could remember why.
- "Here's the vault," says Twilight, standing before a large stone door. She places her horn in a horn-shaped hole and concentrates. There's a rumble, and the doors part. "Don't tell Celestia I learned that trick, by the way."
- There's a chest in the vault. Twilight seizes upon it immediately. "It's still here! Perfect!" She doesn't even notice Spike slide off her back on to the ground. He lands and lets out an agonized groan - much more pained than from a simple fall.
- >Twilight... what's wrong with Spike, really?

- "Nothing!" she remarks, all glassy smiles. "Just... tired! It's been a long day-"
- "He's bitten, isn't he?"
- Twilight freezes half-way between scooping him up. "...How can you tell?"
- "It's obvious!" you almost shout. "The constant sleeping, the protective curl... he got bitten back at the library and you've been covering it up this whole time."
- "It's true..." says Twilight, tears beginning to well up again. "I thought I could protect him. He's a dragon, we hadn't seen any non-ponies affected by the infection yet. I thought..." she looks away and then looks back. "Why didn't you say anything before?"

- Twilight nods. "Thank you. I've been using sleeping spells to keep him from panicking. They're getting harder to maintain, though..." she looks down at Spike. "I think... I think I want him awake for this."
- Spike groans again, rolling over. "Five more minutes..." he grumbles.
- "Wake up, sleepyhead," Twilight tries to say, her voice cracking. "You're already late."
- He blinks his eyes open, wiping sleep from them. "Twilight? What's going on? And - ow, my head's killing me!"
- Twilight turns to you, then looks over at the window with Discord on it. "We once used the Elements to turn the god of Chaos to stone. I think... it might be possible to do again. I could keep Spike turned to stone and hide him somewhere safe, until... until we can cure him."

- "Seriously, my head feels like it's on fire," says Spike. He tries to stand but only manages to fall backward. "Aaaand my legs don't work. What have I been missing?"
- Twilight swallows hard. "Spike... you're infected. It's become acute. I'm sorry, but there's no cure yet. I can't... I can't help you."
- Spike is silent for a moment. "Twilight... what're you saying?"
- "I'm saying..." her voice becomes so hoarse it's hard to understand. "I'm saying that without help, you'll die."
- "B-but you're gonna get help, right?" Says Spike. "You're getting help, right Twilight?"
- "I'm trying. But I don't know if I can find it in time." She pauses, trying to summon her strength. "But I have the elements of harmony. I could... turn you to stone. Leave you somewhere safe until help arrives. You'll be fine that way. You'll survive."
- "Then do it already!" he says, his voice full of fear. "Twilight! Please! Do whatever it takes! I-I don't want to die!"
- "I know, Spike," she whispers. "You're very brave."

- "How are you going to operate the Elements of Harmony on your own?" you ask. "Don't you need the others' help?"
- "I don't know if spike can last that long," Twilight croaks out, looking down at him. "And at the moment, I don't know if the Elements will even work with them. It's not like Pinkie's been laughing much lately."
- "Well then why did we come all the way out here if you don't even think they'll work?" you say, feeling a bit frustrated and confused.
- Twilight takes a deep breath and closes her eyes. "Because I've been reading about another way to use the power of the Elements. A way the others... wouldn't understand. But you've done necessary things to protect people, right Sunny? You understand."
- When she opens her eyes, they're a virulent green. "Don't move."
- Spike begins to shiver. "T-Twilight? What're you doing?"
- "Hold still, Spike." Her voice sounds slightly off. "Please, relax. You'll be perfectly safe." Purple-green tendrils of smoke roll out of her horn to the ground, where they spread to the chest. Jewelry emblazoned with the marks of her friends rise into the air, formless shadows wearing them.
- You want to shout something, anything, but the light transfixes you. There's a horrible familiarity at work here. Your memory fills with the image of a blazing purple sun, casting burning neon-green light that blinds all who see it.
- "I love you, Spike!" Twilight cries as she ascends into the air. "I'll always love you!"
- A bolt of rainbow light forms in the point between the floating elements, but the colours are wrong - twisted. When the beam hits Spike he turns to stone almost instantly, a look of terror frozen in place on his face.
- As soon as it began, it's over. The elements clatter to the ground and the smokey light fades. Twilight blinks her eyes clear.
- She sits there, across from her petrified assistant, and begins to cry.

- "And what's the price?"
- "The price is being misunderstood and second-guessed by someone who can't even use magic!" Twilight snaps before trotting off toward a door. She throws the doors open, stepping out onto a little garden.
- There are statues all around, sculptures and arches. This are has been left relatively untouched, no blood or bodies mar the scene.
- Twilight rests Spike gently on a wide, smooth stone. "He'll be safe here until we get back. The dead don't seem to care about rocks." She blinks back tears while facing Spike's petrified face, frozen in a mask of terror. "I know you can still hear me," she whispers. "I'll be back for you, I promise."

- The trip back is uneventful, the dead ponies ignore you completely. Twilight doesn't feel much like talking now, and nor do you come to that.
- When you reach the quarantine zone and return to the warehouse, Rarity's face falls like a stone when she sees Spike isn't with you. She doesn't wait for an explanation, she runs off screaming and crying. The others hang back, uneasy, gauging Twilight's reaction.
- "I have to see to Caramel's injury, see what I can learn about this infection." The chest lands over with the supplies. "Thank you for your help, Sunny. I'll keep you appraised of my progress."

- "We need a doctor," you say. "There's got to be a hospital in Canterlot."
- "There is," says Rainbow Dash. "I was there once after a game. I know how to get there, but it's waaay out of the quarantine zone. And according to the guards? It was ground-zero for the outbreak."
- "There's no chance anyone's still alive in there," insists Fluttershy. "We'd be better off wandering Canterlot aimlessly, or maybe just-"
- "DON'T say it," Dash warns Fluttershy, waving a threatening hoof under her nose. "Not right now, Fluttershy."
- >I'm game to give it a try, if it's our only option
- >That'll just get us all killed. We might just have to hope she gets better.
- >Look, I've got to check on something else right now.

- "We have to try. Let's go to the hospital and see what we can find."
- "Alright!" Dash exclaims, punching the air. Fluttershy just frowns, but follows.
- The three of you set off at once. The guards at the quarantine look pretty skeptical of your group. "Nothing personal," one of them warns, "but we've lost whole patrols of guys tougher than you."
- "We'll see who's really tough!" Dash boasts to them as you pass. "Just try to keep the place standing 'till we get back!"
- The three of you pick your way very carefully through Canterlot's streets, creeping along and stopping frequently whenever a dead pony wanders by. When the coast seems clear, Rainbow Dash starts to whisper. "Been a lot of talk about what to do next, Sunny," she tells you. "Applejack thinks we need to find somewhere safe to hide and wait this whole thing out, but Twilight keeps talking like we can fix it."
- "That could just wind up getting all of us killed," Fluttershy mutters. "Focusing on saving the ones we can is more important than chasing some dream world."
- >But what if we really can fix this?
- >We need to focus on looking after our own group.
- >It's not my place to make these sorts of decisions

- "What if we can fix this, though?" you ask. "What if we're the only ones who can?"
- "Yeah," adds Rainbow Dash. "We've never backed down from a challenge before!"
- "In the wild, confidence takes an animal far," Fluttershy replies. "If it can't swallow its pride and run when it's outmatched, though, it will die. And so will everyone who depends on it."
- Dash pulls an irritated expression and falls silent.
- In the silence, you hear nearby groaning.
- "Feathers!" Dash exclaims, scanning the sky. "I don't see any of 'em up there. I'll do some recon, you two take shelter over there." She points to an alcove dug in the side of a cafe before taking off.
- You and Fluttershy hustle over to the small space and squeeze in, out of sight. In the silence, you wait.
- "So," she says at last. "You killed Big Macintosh."
- You're about to reply when she cuts you off. "I understand. You made a choice, and you managed to beat him. You're stronger. That's good for the group." She looks you in the eye, and you're surprised to see how cold they've become. "Why didn't you take him up on his offer, though? Why didn't you cut the dead weight loose?"
- >Fluttershy, please, think about what you're saying.
- >Big Macintosh was nuts.

- "Do you even know what you're saying?"you reply, shocked. "These are real ponies you're talking about, not just 'dead weight'."
- "If someone's standing between you and survival, you remove them," she answers, cold as ice. "It doesn't matter why they're there. It's a law of nature. If you don't, or won't, you won't survive."
- "I remember a pegasus who wouldn't leave a beloved bunny behind," you say. "I remember a field of animals who threw themselves in the path of a horde to save your life."
- Fluttershy's mouth hangs open and her eyes begin to water. She shuts her mouth again and tries to set her jaw, but you've shaken her. "I remember you stomping that bunny's head into the dirt," she chokes out. "I remember that Fluttershy dying."
- Dash returns. "The way ahead's clear. We're almost there." Fluttershy hurries past, drawing a confused look from Dash. "What's gotten into her?" You shrug.

- The three of you approach the hospital. The front entrance is seething, the dead choke it. Approach seems impossible. "Time to try the back door," says Dash, grabbing you. "Hold on!"
- She and Fluttershy take off, circling to the back of the building. There you find a loading dock, without any corpses shuffling around at all. "Score!"
- You land and Dash tries the door. "Aww, locked. Damnit!"
- There's a clatter as a grate falls away. Fluttershy, above the two of you, has opened an air vent. "I can squeeze through here," she suggests. "I'll open the door, just stay there."
- "Be careful!" Dash calls after her, as she squirms into the tight space. Dash sighs. "At least she's not such a scaredy-cat anymore. Once upon a time we wouldn't've gotten her out of the warehouse."
- A quiet minute passes, with Dash jumping from hoof to hoof. "It's taking her a while." You give a noncommittal nod. "...Flutters isn't as supportive of the whole 'Save Pinkie Pie' plan as I thought she'd be..."
- >Fluttershy has serious problems. Watch out for her.

- "Look, I know she's your friend," you warn, "but I think this whole situation's broken Fluttershy. In the head. You need to watch out for her."
- Dash bristles, anger entering her expression. "Don't talk about Fluttershy like that! We've been friends for years, and she might look soft but she's no pushover!"
- "Okay, okay!" you say. "I just mean I think it's getting to her. That's all."
- Dash calms and you wait in silence until the door opens. "Sorry," Fluttershy says, as she lets you in. "There was someone in the way, so I had to deal with him."
- The two of you join Fluttershy in the loading bay. There's a dead pony laid out on the floor with its skull bashed in by a mallet.
- Fluttershy weighs the mallet in her hoof. "Let's see what we can find for Pinkie Pie."
- Dash gives you a sideways glance.

- The three of you inch carefully through the hospital. There are dead all over. You sneak past those you can. Those you can't, Fluttershy takes out with a single smooth mallet whack to the head. Quick and quiet.
- The power is out in places, so that many lights are flickering. The dead's rampage has done considerable damage to the building and any prospective medical supplies. If you had any hope of anyone being alive, it dwindles quickly.
- You make it all the way to the second floor before Dash lets out a frustrated grunt. "This is hopeless!" she hisses.
- "Hopeless, you say?" an unfamiliar voice says. It sounds like an older man, injected with good humour, and it comes echoing down the darkened hall.
- Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash instinctively take a step toward each other. You step out in front. The voice starts to laugh. "And what would you know of being without hope?"
- >We're... looking for a doctor.

- "Come out where we can see you!" You shout down the hallway. The laughter starts up again.
- "Of course!" the voice cries out. A dark shape begins to move far down the corridor, where the lights barely flicker.
- He steps forward under dim illumination. He's a pony - a unicorn, wearing a doctor's stethoscope.
- He is also covered in bleeding bite marks, head to hoof.
- "Like what you see?" he asks, with a manic grin.
