  1. >That moment in time seems to last an eternity.
  2. >Chrissy pinning you down against the stone slab.
  3. >The dark night sky bearing down on you two.
  4. >And a pair of prying eyes catches the whole sight.
  5. >In an instant, Chrissy, still in the guise of Cadenza, hops off of you and runs.
  6. >Taking another exit, she rushes into the Labyrinth.
  7. >This leaves you with the invader.
  8. >It walks closer, coming into view.
  9. >Purple mane.
  10. >Pink coat.
  11. >Wings.
  12. >It's...Cadenza?
  13. >But you just saw Chrissy run away.
  14. >Oh...
  15. >This is bad...
  16. >"A-anon! What was, I..."
  17. >She stammers at what she just saw.
  18. >It makes sense.
  19. >How could she process it?
  20. >She saw HERSELF.
  21. "Cadenza, wait-"
  22. >"SHUT UP!"
  23. >You have no idea how you're getting out of this one.
  24.
  25. "Cadenza, listen to me."
  26. >The panic in her voice rises.
  27. >"WHAT WAS THAT THING?!? IT...It looked like...."
  28. >Her eyes become wide with realization.
  29. >You did the only thing you thought you could do.
  30. >Lie.
  31. "What thing?"
  32. >"WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHAT THING?!? It was on top of you!"
  33. "I was lying on the bench, Cadenza..."
  34. >"NO, it was holding you down! It looked like...me! I mean she...I...."
  35. >You grab her shoulders, shaking her lightly.
  36. "Cadenza, listen to yourself!"
  37. >Come on, come on...
  38. >"But...but I saw..."
  39. "I don't know WHAT you saw, but it wasn't there."
  40. >In what can be only described as hysterical, her mannerisms continue to degrade.
  41. >"YES I WAS! I mean, she...I..."
  42. "Listen to yourself!"
  43. >It's working.
  44. >To be honest, if everything she was saying weren't 100% true, she would sound crazy.
  45. >"I..."
  46. "Look, Cadenza-"
  47. >"Cadance."
  48. "...there wasn't anyone here."
  49. >"..."
  50. >Her silence confirms that your words have stuck with her.
  51.
  52. >A few moments later, you're leading her out of the labyrinth.
  53. >The pink mare simply looks to the floor, following your footsteps out.
  54. >Right, straight, right, left, left, right...
  55. >You didn't bother to change up the route.
  56. >As you walk into the gardens, you look behind you.
  57. >Cadenza's steps are lagging, and as she leaves the Labyrinth, she grinds to a halt.
  58. >"...Anon."
  59. "Hm?"
  60. >"Promise me."
  61. "...what?"
  62. >Her downwards look changes to a piercing glare, tear filled eyes staring at you.
  63. >"Promise me that I didn't see anything."
  64. "Cadenza, you know-"
  65. >"PROMISE ME."
  66. "You didn't see anything!"
  67. >She continues to gaze at you with an angered expression.
  68. "Cadance, I promise."
  69. >With that, the gaze fades, replaced with a happy grin.
  70. >"Okay!"
  71. >She wipes the tears away.
  72. >Finally, it seems like she believes you.
  73. >"I'm going home now, I'll see you tomorrow~"
  74. >She trots off, heading back towards town.
  75. >But before she's completely out of view, she yells.
  76. >"YOU STILL OWE ME A TEA PARTY!"
  77.
  78. >The next morning...
  79.
  80. >*bbbbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnngggggg*
  81. >That school bell never ceases to be an annoyance.
  82. >You trudge to school, jacket and backpack in tow.
  83. >Last night was...
  84. >Odd.
  85. >To say the very least.
  86. >You barely slept, worried about Chrissy.
  87. >Her number one worry, her only fear.
  88. >Being seen...
  89. >It happened.
  90. >What kind of friend were you?
  91. >You let this happen by being careless!
  92. >What if she never comes back to the Labyrinth?
  93. >You messed up big time.
  94. >And to top it all off, it was Cadenza who saw you two.
  95. >Luckily, you managed to convince her that she was crazy and didn't see anything.
  96. >She is just a filly after all.
  97. >You may be just as young, but you were clever.
  98. >Walking into school, you leave your bag with the others, and take a seat in the back.
  99. >Everyone seems to be staring at your today...
  100. >A few of the girls make glances and giggle.
  101. >Except Cadenza.
  102. >Weird.
  103. >Today's lesson? Writing.
  104. >Another easy one.
  105. >You get your work done in half the time, considering you don't have to write with your teeth.
  106. >Passing in the assignment, you sit back down to your desk.
  107. >More doodles, you suppose.
  108. >Lifting the desktop open, you grab your notebook.
  109. >Flipping past your past drawings, you find a fresh piece of paper.
  110.
  111. >A few minutes pass, and the bell rings once more.
  112. >You didn't get much drawn
  113. >It was more like staring at your pencil tip, hoping it would move on it's own.
  114. >You leave your notebook on the desk, heading outside for recess.
  115. >As you take a seat on a bench outside, Shining follows suit.
  116. >"Hey Anon."
  117. "Hey Shiny."
  118. >"So, uh, is what everyp0ny saying true?"
  119. >This gets your attention.
  120. "What do you mean? What IS everyp0ny saying?"
  121. >"Well, that you and Cadenza were in the Labyrinth last night."
  122. >You freeze.
  123. >How the heck could anyone know.
  124. >"Ano~n!"
  125. >Speak of the devil.
  126. >"Hey, Cadance."
  127. >Instead of a greeting returned, Shining recieves a glorious declaration.
  128. >"Why yes, Shining, it IS true."
  129. >She can't be...
  130. >"I can't believe everyp0ny found out about it~"
  131. >She grins, looking at you.
  132. >To everyp0ny else, this was a cute smirk at her special somep0ny.
  133. >To you, it was a look of victory.
  134. "No, we weren't! I swear!"
  135. >You try to convince the crowd, which wasn't working.
  136. >"Anon, there's no need to be bashful!"
  137. >She sits next to you on the bench, uncomfortably close.
  138. >A flash of memory hits your mind.
  139. >She's reminding you of Chrissy from last night.
  140.
  141. "C...Chrissy?"
  142. >She stops for a second, then gives you an angry look.
  143. >"Cadance!"
  144. >She smacks you in the back of the head.
  145. >Definitely Cadance.
  146. >And she's playing you like a fiddle.
  147. "Look, we weren't at the gardens!"
  148. >"I never said anything about the gardens~"
  149. >Oh man, she's playing hardball.
  150. >And everyone's buying it.
  151. >P0nies stare at you two, giggling.
  152. "Cadance, stop, tell them-"
  153. >"Anon, listen to yourself!"
  154. >That tone of voice.
  155. >Those words.
  156. >She's...mimicing you.
  157. >From last night.
  158. >Stupid girls.
  159. >You stand up and walk back inside, not willing to deal with their jostling anymore.
  160. >Swiping your backpack and jacket, you head for the front door.
  161. >"ANON! School isn't over yet!"
  162. "I'm already done."
  163. >You toss the assignment on her desk and leave.
  164. >Stupid girls, stupid school p0nies.
  165. >Rushing away from the schoolhouse, you head into the castle.
  166. >Up the steps, through the halls, and upstairs to your room.
  167. >You slam the door shut, and fall onto the bed.
  168. >The Labyrinth is no longer a safe haven.
  169. >Chrissy could be in trouble right now as it is...
  170. >Never again.
  171. >You'll never put her in danger again.
  172.
  173. >Meanwhile...
  174.
  175. >*bbbbbbbrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnngggggggg*
  176. >The schoolbell rings once more, to signal the end of the day.
  177. >Your writing wasn't the best...but eventually your magic will work!
  178. >Then Mi Amore Cadenza will never have to write with her teeth again!
  179. >Haha!
  180. >Writing is the last thing on your mind however.
  181. >Anon has been pretty sneaky lately...
  182. >And last night took the cake!
  183. >You KNOW you saw something.
  184. >It looked like...you!
  185. >But YOU'RE you!
  186. >No one's that pretty!
  187. >Something's fishy.
  188. >And you think you have an idea what it might have been...
  189. >Anon left his notebook of silly doodles on his desk...
  190. >As the other ponies leave, you can't help but sneak a peek.
  191. >There's the drawing from the other day!
  192. >That swiss cheese p0ny...
  193. >Hmm...
  194. >You take the drawing, and place the book in his desk.
  195. >Leaving the school, you beeline straight for your home.
  196. >You need to ask the smartest person in all of Equestria about this!
  197.
  198. "Mommy! Mommy!"
  199. >You run up to your mother, waving the drawing around.
  200. "Look what I drew!"
  201. >Your mom looks down at you.
  202. >"Hello, Mi Amore! What have you got there?"
  203. >She levitates the drawing out of your mouth and inspects it.
  204. >"Oho! I never knew you liked ancient myths, my sweetie!"
  205. >Ancient myths?
  206. "Uh, yeah! I liked drawing the...uh..."
  207. >"Changeling?"
  208. "YEAH, changeling!"
  209. >Feigning knowledge of what it's called!
  210. >You're a smart one, Cadance, yes you are!
  211. >But what's a changeling...?
  212. >"Interesting creatures indeed, said to be able to take another p0ny's form!"
  213. >You stand there speechless.
  214. >"I personally liked the Windigo, from the old stories..."
  215. >You jump up, snatching the picture in your teeth, and dash away.
  216. "THANKS MOOOOOM!"
  217. >You scream as you run out the door.
  218. >Somep0ny's got some explaining to do.
  219.
  220. >Returning to Anon...
  221.
  222. >Your face has been buried in your pillow for the last few hours.
  223. >Comfortable?
  224. >Absolutely.
  225. >Helpful?
  226. >Not in the least.
  227. >Chrissy still wracked your mind.
  228. >Is she safe?
  229. >You sure hope so.
  230. >As you go to reach for an apple, you overhear something.
  231. >"Is Anon here?"
  232. >"Why yes, he's right upstairs!"
  233. >Oh no.
  234. >Who could possibly want to see you?
  235. >Your door swings open.
  236. >"Why hello there, Anon."
  237. "Cadenza. Look, you need to-"
  238. >She slams the door behind her.
  239. >"CADANCE. And 'I' don't need to do ANYTHING."
  240. >What...
  241. >"You PROMISED me I saw nothing."
  242. >She starts walking towards you.
  243. "Cadance, I don't-"
  244. >Cadenza pulls something out of her bag.
  245. >Your drawing.
  246. >How...
  247.
  248. >"I knew I wasn't crazy...this CHANGELING of yours was impersonating me!"
  249. >Ah crap, she knows, she knows!!!
  250. "I can explain!"
  251. >She puts a hoof on your chest, giving you a shove.
  252. >"You don't NEED to explain. All you need to do is listen."
  253. >What could she...
  254. >"If you don't want your friend getting found out, you're going to do what I say, got it?"
  255. >Wha...
  256. >She can't be serious.
  257. "Cadenza-"
  258. >She stomps her hoof, shaking the room lightly.
  259. >"CADANCE!"
  260. >Best not say it wrong again.
  261. "Okay, Cadance...I..."
  262. >She's not kidding.
  263. >But...Chrissy.
  264. >You promised yourself...never again.
  265. "Okay."
  266. >With a smile, she steps back.
  267. >"Okay, my special somep0ny..."
  268. >Whatever it takes.
  269. >She'll never be in danger again.
  270.
  271. >Last night...
  272.
  273. >A young changeling runs out of the labyrinth.
  274. >Tears fill her eyes, as a light green flame overtakes her body.
  275. >The pink coat of the mare she was mimicing disappeared.
  276. >The wings she grew for the facade attempted to carry her away, but to no avail.
  277. >Flight was out of her reach as the wings faded, leaving her black back bare once more.
  278. >Her pink horn and purple mane, in a flash of green, returned to their original hues.
  279. >Chrissy was Chrissy once more.
  280. >And for now, she ran.
  281. >She had been seen, by no other than the mare she was impersonating.
  282. >She broke the first rule set upon her.
  283. >The first thing taught to young changelings.
  284. >Never.
  285. >Be.
  286. >Seen.
  287. >She had been found, and it's all over now.
  288. >Rushing back to her clutch, she passes by the sleeping changelings right to her parents.
  289. >They sit on the throne.
  290. >Awake, surprisingly.
  291. >The mother notices her daughter's presence immediately.
  292. >"My dear daughter!"
  293. >She sits up from her throne to meet her daughter.
  294. >Chrissy hugs her legs, and instead of being returned the favor, she only feels the familiar pull of her mother's magic.
  295. >The light green glow extracted from her horn, flowing into her mother's.
  296. >She only ever greeted her if she had this glow.
  297.
  298. >Her father was much more sympathetic.
  299. >"Chrysalis, my daughter, you look sad. Is something wrong?"
  300. >With a sniffle, Chrissy runs to her father, recieving a hug as she gives one.
  301. >"I...made a mistake..."
  302. >Her father looks down to her.
  303. >"Hm?"
  304. >She shuffles a hoof, and looks up at him.
  305. >"I've been hiding in plain sight...but...I got seen..."
  306. >The changeling king gasps at this prospect.
  307. >"You've been sneaking out to see p0nies?!? And you were seen?!?"
  308. >Her mother, after indluging in the glow she extracted, returns to her throne.
  309. >"As long as she's alive, it's quite alright."
  310. >Chrissy begins to weep once more.
  311. >"I'm sorry mommy, I'm sorry daddy..."
  312. >Her father bends down to hug her once more.
  313. >"It's okay, my dear. But NO MORE visiting the p0nies, okay?"
  314. >It's at this point her mother interjects.
  315. >"My king, don't you think that's a little harsh? We shouldn't limit her like this!"
  316. >Looking up from the hug, he glares at the queen.
  317. >"We are not going to allow our daughter to risk her own safety, and the safety of the hive!"
  318. >The queen is clearly disgusted with him.
  319. >"You are a weak fool, our daughter is plenty capable. Come here, Chrysalis."
  320.
  321. >Chrissy walks to her mother.
  322. >"Little one, where have you been going?"
  323. >She looks down at the floor, ashamed.
  324. >"Don't be ashamed, my dear. Tell me where you've been..."
  325. >"C..Canterlot..."
  326. >Her mother recoils.
  327. >"My, that's where all this love has been coming from?"
  328. >The king intervenes.
  329. >"NO! We cannot allow her to-"
  330. >"Quiet you old fool!"
  331. >He sits down in his throne, letting the queen have her way.
  332. >"My dear Chrysalis...whoever you have been getting this love from..."
  333. >Chrissy seemed confused.
  334. >She still did not understand this 'love'.
  335. >"I need you to keep following them. Watch them from afar...but do not be seen..."
  336. >The mother allows her horn to glow once more, the energy she had absorbed continuing to sustain her.
  337. >"You need to do this for as long as you can, do you understand?"
  338. >Chrissy thinks about it...and nods.
  339. >"Yes Mommy."
  340. >Chrissy would listen to her mother's orders.
  341. >Watch from afar...do not be seen...
  342. >For as long as she could.
