  1. >The cigarette's ashes fall into the tray as time slowly creeps forward.
  2. >The T.V. plays some old love story, black and white.
  3. >Casa-blank-a, about a blank flank gal.
  4. >The rain droplets on the window compliment the soft record player in the corner.
  5. >A slow night, as usual.
  6. >However, in this town, a slow night is a blessing in disguise.
  7. >Ponyville.
  8. >Not the most menacing sounding place in the world, but everything good in this world has a dark underbelly.
  9. >The Changeling Mob, roaming gangs of griffons.
  10. >Problems just like any other town.
  11. >And it's your job to stop 'em.
  12. >Well, that's what it says on your card.
  13. >And your door.
  14.
  15. >'Anon P.I.'
  16. >It was put there a few months after you arrived in town.
  17. >You always had a knack for finding trouble.
  18. >Well, moreso, trouble found you.
  19. >And more often than not, it wished it didn't.
  20. >After you fought off that griffon gang terrorizing Sugarcube Corner, the people had a respect for you.
  21. >It only made sense to take that respect and knack for trouble being around the corner, and make a job out of it.
  22. >You needed a place to stay, and the Cakes were more than happy to oblige.
  23. >You did, after all, save their joint.
  24. >Their live-in Pinkie was just as excited, and even offered to help out.
  25. >Skip ahead a few months, and here we are.
  26. >Sitting behind your desk, watching sappy romances on the tube.
  27.
  28. >"Hiya, boss!"
  29. >Pinkie trots in with a package.
  30. >Quickly, you flip the television off.
  31. >"Were you watchin' those romance flicks again, boss?"
  32. >She oh so enjoyed calling you that.
  33. "Nah, I dunno what you're talkin' about."
  34. >She rolls her eyes and drops the package in front of you.
  35. >"I always knew you were the lovey-dovey type!"
  36. "Can it, Pinks. What's in the box?"
  37. >Pinkie smiles.
  38. >"You know I always bring the goods!"
  39. >Flipping it open, she reveals perfectly powdered jelly donuts.
  40. "Payed another visit to Joe, did ya?"
  41. >"You know him, boss. Can't resist a bit of sugar."
  42. >The smirk on her face reveals the intent of her smooth talk.
  43. >But you already knew that.
  44. >It's why you knew Pinks was a good partner, not afraid to use her 'cupcakes'.
  45.
  46. >You swipe a donut and take a bite.
  47. >Strawberry jelly, the good stuff.
  48. >Pinks takes her seat behind her desk, throwing her hooves up on the oak table.
  49. >"So, anything tonight?"
  50. >You point a donut at her, a small drop of jelly hitting your desk.
  51. "You think if we did, we wouldn't already be out the door?"
  52. >Pinks sighs, eating a donut in one go.
  53. >"We ain't gonna be able to keep afloat like this, boss."
  54. >She's right.
  55. >You groan as you flip the television back on, resuming your program.
  56. "It's a dirty business, Pinks. We keep the streets clean to keep bits in our pocket. But when the garbage is all swept up? We're left to sink."
  57. >You take a drag from your cigarette.
  58. >It's not a cigarette...entirely.
  59. >It's one of those sugar sticks.
  60. >You glare at Pinks.
  61. >"You know those things'll kill ya, boss."
  62. >She tosses the lit stick in the trash.
  63. >Which sets the trash on fire.
  64. "Not any faster than you will!"
  65.
  66. >Time passes, and your show ends.
  67. >You'd have a tear in your eye if it weren't for Pinks in the corner.
  68. >"Don't be such a sap, boss!"
  69. >She can read you like a book.
  70. >You turn off the tube and stand up.
  71. "We should call it for the night, no one's showin'."
  72. >"Alrighty, boss. Night!"
  73. >You grab your fedora and grey coat, and swing it over your suspender-clad shoulders.
  74. >As you head to the door, you wave back at Pinks.
  75. >She'll be here for a good couple of hours.
  76. >Making absolutely sure that no one is coming in.
  77. >Since that attack on her home, we wants to make sure nothing like it happens again.
  78. >Admirable.
  79. >As you turn to leave, the door opens for you.
  80. >In the doorway, a white p0ny, with gorgeous purple mane.
  81. >The red dress she wears pops out in the low light of your office.
  82. >Looks like it won't be a quiet night after all.
  83.
  84. "Evening, Miss Rarity."
  85. >She chuckles lightly at your polite stature.
  86. >"Oh come now, Anon. No need to be so formal."
  87. >She steps inside and walks over to your desk.
  88. >"Heya, Rarity!"
  89. >Pinks waves at her frantically.
  90. >There goes the air of professionalism.
  91. >You toss your coat back on the rack.
  92. >But the hat stays.
  93. "Whatcha got for me, dollface?"
  94. >She giggles once again, loving the compliment.
  95. >"Do we have to move so quickly? I just got here~"
  96. >She's in the mood for a bit of playing around.
  97. >Unfortunately, if she's here, she must have a case.
  98. >And that can't wait.
  99. "Look toots, now ain't the time or the place."
  100. >She sighs, batting her eyes at you.
  101. >"I supposed if I caught you in the middle of Casa-blank-a instead of after it..."
  102. >Clever dame.
  103. >"See, I knew you were a sap, boss!"
  104. "Shaddap, ya ankle-biter!"
  105.
  106. "So, Rarity, why ya here anyways?"
  107. >"Aside from spending time in your company? I got something you wanna see..."
  108. >You press your hand against your temples.
  109. "I told ya before, toots, not the time or the place."
  110. >She sighs.
  111. >"I meant a case file, ya big lummox."
  112. >She drops a manila folder in front of you.
  113. >Turning to leave, she stops for a brief moment.
  114. >"Glad to know you're interested though."
  115. >With a wink, she exits your office.
  116. >"Ooooooooohhhh, she's trying to get at your candy cane, boss!"
  117. >You roll your eyes.
  118. "Quiet, Pinks. Let's see what we got here."
  119. >You tear open the folder and flip through the papers.
  120. "Looks like another griffon gang beatdown on 34th."
  121. >Pinks' candy cigarette crunches between her teeth.
  122. >"Griffons groups gone gangster? On my streets?"
  123. >Pinks gets up, adjusting her trilby cap.
  124. >"Let's bounce, Anon."
  125. >She then literally bounces out the door.
  126.
  127. >The city streets in the dim light of the streetlamps seems peaceful right now.
  128. >The peace is welcomed, however.
  129. >The corpse you and Pinks stand over deserves that much.
  130. >Among the beaten and bruised body, you can easily tell who it is through the blue feathers.
  131. >"Dash..."
  132. >A small sniffle is heard, as Pinks raises a hoof to her face.
  133. >You bend down and place a hand on her shoulder.
  134. "We'll catch 'em Pinks."
  135. >The tears begin to flow, dripping off her hooves, matching the falling rain.
  136. >Rainbow was never close to you, but she was one of Pinks' best friends.
  137. >After a silent cry, the hoof comes down.
  138. >On a face where there used to be anguish, only resolve and determination remain.
  139. >"Anon..."
  140. >She reaches into her jacket, grabbing a candy cigarette, lighting the tip.
  141. >Caramel drips to the ground as powdered sugar escapes her lips.
  142. >You don't question it.
  143. >"Let's go."
  144. >With that, the roar of ambulances arrives behind you.
  145. >You and Pinks leave the scene as they carry away her body.
  146. "Shoulda brought a Hearst...she don't deserve to be pecked apart at the hospital."
  147.
  148. >Speaking of pecked apart, you know just where to start.
  149. >You have a feeling Pinks does too.
  150. "Dash had a past with the griffons..."
  151. >You pull out a photo.
  152. >Pinks looks at it, then grimaces.
  153. >"Gilda."
  154. >The stern looking griffon is your first suspect.
  155. >Putting the photo away, you swipe a candy cig from your partner.
  156. >You pop it in your mouth and look up to the overcast sky.
  157. >The rain slowly trickles down on your face.
  158. >Pinks is silent, joining you in looking skyward.
  159. >Dash is flyin' around up there, right now.
  160. >You just know it.
  161.
  162. >With that, you and Pinks walk down the sidewalk.
  163. >It's a cold, rainy night in the streets of Ponyville.
  164. >The gutters are stained red with the blood of an innocent.
  165. >These streets aren't kind, that's for certain.
  166. >But it's down to you to clean 'em up.
  167. >The dim glow of the lamplights shade your face from view under your fedora.
  168. >It helps to hide the single tear.
  169. >"Come on boss, now's not the time to be a sap."
  170. >Pinks looks up at ya with a smile.
  171. >Of all the times to stay positive...
  172. >It's why she's your partner.
  173. >You walk alongside her as you make your way to Gilda.
  174. >It's gonna be a long night.
