  1. >You slowly blink your eyes awake as you feel warmth on your cheek.
  2. >Sunlight, burning and bright, shines into your eyes.
  3. >At that moment, you're glad you didn't sneak out to go drinking.
  4. >You turn over and look at Rarity, still asleep, snuggled up next to you on the bed.
  5. >You frown as you look at her adorable face, smiling in some pleasant dream.
  6. >You were doing something wrong.
  7. >You carefully brush a hand through her mane as you think, frowning to yourself.
  8. >It had never gone this way before.
  9. >Back home, it was just...drink, talk, bang, and leave.
  10. >That was love.
  11. >This is...
  12. >It doesn't make sense. You talk to her and she says things that are actually interesting to listen to.
  13. >She engages you, she challenges you every day, every time she speaks.
  14. >This wasn't how it was supposed to be. Not how you'd known it.
  15. >You had to be doing something wrong.
  16. >She was...well, not human, of course. Of course she'd be reluctant.
  17. >Hell, YOU were reluctant.
  18. >But still.
  19. >That's how things were supposed to, right?
  20. >Why were the pair of you sleeping together without, well, sleeping together?
  21. >The answer was obvious. Rarity was a lady, after all!
  22. >But what was a lady, really?
  23. >Your mother always said a lady was just a whore with a higher class of john.
  24. >You're shaken out of your depressing thoughts by Rarity shifting next to you.
  25. >A pair of sapphire eyes open and stare into yours.
  26. >"Good morning, Anonymous."
  27. >You smile.
  28. "Morning, marshmallow. How ya feeling?”
  29.
  30.
  31.
  32. >She smiles and slides off your chest to the floor, her hooves making soft taps on the tiles.
  33. >"I feel positively refreshed! Don't you? After the DREADFUL ending to that play, a fresh new day is just what we need."
  34. >You sit up on the bed, yawning.
  35. "Sure thing. A new day sounds great."
  36. >"Of course! So many things to do around Canterlot. Perhaps we'll visit an art museum, or attend an auction, or watch a race."
  37. "Sounds great."
  38. >She looks over her shoulder, concerned.
  39. >"Well what has you so melancholy?"
  40. "I...nothing, just Blueblood. I'm just mad we had to deal with him on our...vacation."
  41. >She sighs.
  42. >"Oh I KNOW. He's such a...."
  43. >She shivers for a moment, grimacing.
  44. >"I refuse to let him ruin this morning, Anonymous. I'm going to go take a bath, and then we'll get some breakfast, alright?"
  45. >You smile at her.
  46. "Sure thing. Eggs?"
  47. >She rolls her eyes.
  48. >"Maybe."
  49. >You drop your jaw in horror as she giggles and trots to the bathroom.
  50. >You make your way to small refridgerator in the room's kitchen as Rarity bathes.
  51. >You'd be damned if you weren't having eggs for breakfast in a world where they were readily available!
  52. >To your shock, there was a little bit of food, eggs, some leafy greens you didn't recognize, and strips of something you most definitely did.
  53. >Sweet mother of God they had bacon.
  54. >TIME TO COOK.
  55. >You grab appliances out of the cupboards, as well as eggs, some of those greens, and that holy Gift of the Gods.
  56. >Bacon.
  57. >You hear a set of hooves trotting behind you as you cook, as well as the distinct sound of magic.
  58. >Rarity takes her seat at the kitchen table, humming to herself.
  59. >"Well, I see SOMEpony couldn't wait for me to finish bathing."
  60.
  61.
  62. >You turn and look at Rarity over your shoulder.
  63. "You have bacon."
  64. >She raises an eyebrow.
  65. >"Anonymous, you still could have waited for-"
  66. "Rarity. You. Have. BACON. I didn't think ponies ATE bacon."
  67. >She furrows her brows a bit, confused, until what you're saying sinks in.
  68. >"Ah. Anon, I don't thi-"
  69. "Sssshhhh. Bacon."
  70. >Rarity sighs, then giggles quietly to herself.
  71. >She didn't rent a griffon-friendly suit, after all.
  72. >She trots to the kitchen counter.
  73. >Some coffee ought to go great with whatever food you're rustling up.
  74. >Your grin splits your face as the smell of cooking bacon begins to fill your nose.
  75. >It smelled...off, sort of, but still...the smell.
  76. >You could die happy. You're pretty sure there's a tear in your eye right now.
  77. >Rarity, for her part, fixes her cup of coffee and sits back to watch the fireworks.
  78. >You notice the bacon is a little...lightly colored for being cooked, but it smells ready, and you don't want it to get crispy.
  79. >Crispy bacon was okay, but soft bacon is best bacon.
  80. >Especially with omelettes.
  81. >You lower the delicious Gifts from God onto a plate and begin cooking an omelette.
  82. >You recognized onions and cheese in the fridge, so you put that in there along with a few green things you think Rarity might like eating.
  83. >You hope whatever the hell this is, it's edible, because memories of that disgusting hay shake made you shiver.
  84. >You finish off the omelette, still grinning as you cut it in half and ladle two omelettes on the plate.
  85. >Your grin stays fixed as you set the two plates on the table.
  86. >You pick up a piece of glorious, glorious bacon.
  87. >And you take a bite.
  88. >Hay. The disgusting taste of hay.
  89. >You flip the table.
  90.
  91.
  92. "WHY GOD!? TELL ME WHY!?"
  93. >Rarity nonchalantly catches the plates of food in her horn's magic, laughing uncontrollably as you sob on your seat.
  94. >"Don't be...don't be such a baby Anon!"
  95. "Why WASN'T I WARNED!?"
  96. >"I tried to tell you, but you...pffffhahaha!"
  97. "Why do ponies make everything with hay!?"
  98. >She shrugs.
  99. >"It tastes delicious."
  100. "It REALLY doesn't."
  101. >She gives you a sardonic glance, and you sigh and flip the table back over.
  102. >Rarity sets the plates back down, still giggling.
  103. >You wordlessly giving your bacon, a single tear of loss making it's way down your face.
  104. >If God was up there lookin' down at you, he was a cruel bastard.
  105. >You cut at your omelette with a fork, feeling depressed and horrified.
  106. >One bite's enough to tell you that whatever the greens were, they weren't terrible.
  107. >But that omelette can't fill the hole that hay bacon had drilled into your heart.
  108. >Rarity finishes off her omelette with gusto, washing it down with a dainty sip of coffee.
  109. >Then she slowly eats a goodly portion of her bacon, grinning at your expression while she does it.
  110. "This is the worst breakfast."
  111. >"It's not so bad, really. The omelette was excellent, and this hay bacon is divine."
  112. >You glare at her from across the table.
  113. "You've got bacon in your teeth."
  114. >She squeaks and leaps away from the table, covering her mouth with a hoof.
  115. >You grin and toss the plates in the dishwasher, laughing to yourself at the sigh of Rarity hoofing it to the bathroom.
  116. >Time to polish off this disaster with a glass of milk.
  117.
  118.
  119. >"That was NOT funny!"
  120. "It really was."
  121. >She glares at you as the pair of you walk through the streets of Canterlot.
  122. >"If that was just petty revenge over your hay bacon misfortune, I'd say you were being incredibly childish."
  123. >You raise an eyebrow and look at her.
  124. "And spending two hours searching desperately for a bacon bit and then spending another hour crying on the bed asking me if I thought you were ugly WASN'T childish?"
  125. >Rarity sniffs and looks straight ahead of herself.
  126. >"It was not."
  127. >You raise your eyebrow higher.
  128. >"It was...maybe...a LITTLE overdramatic."
  129. "A little?"
  130. >"I say we switch to another discussion."
  131. "Uh huh, you would. So what are we going to do today?"
  132. >Rarity's eyes immediately light up.
  133. >"The Wonderbolts are hosting a show today, perhaps you'd like to see that?"
  134. "Who are the..."
  135. >"Racing ponies, darling, they put on shows of speed and skill for the rest of us. They absolutely fantastic to watch, let me tell you!"
  136. >Darling.
  137. >That almost pulled back your thoughts from the morning, but you let it drop for the moment.
  138. "That sounds...kind of amazing, actually. Sure, let's go to that!"
  139. >She grins at you.
  140. >"Oh and we MUST visit a wine tasting tonight-"
  141. "Wine tasting? As in a bar?"
  142. >She laughs at your question.
  143. >"Anon, no! You don't actually SWALLOW the wine."
  144. "Then what's the point?"
  145. >Rarity rolls her eyes at you.
  146. >"You'll see. It will be fun, just trust me!"
  147. "Okay, where's this air show and how do we get there?"
  148. >Rarity smiles at you.
  149.
  150.
  151.
  152. >You cover your head as the suited up pegasi race around the ring, the speed of their passing leaving a great thunderclap in your ears.
  153. >Ponies stomp and cheer at the sight of them, and you feel a stirring of adrenaline yourself.
  154. >But mostly it was fear.
  155. >You'd been too busy rolling around on the floor of the train to realize it at the time, but Canterlot was built into the side of a mountain.
  156. >Very high up on the side of a mountain.
  157. >VERY HIGH up.
  158. >Rarity cheers politely from next to you, grinning at your awestruck expression.
  159. >"Isn't this amazing!?"
  160. "Terrifying is the word I'd use!"
  161. >She pouts.
  162. >"Oh come on! Stop being afraid, Anonymous! You'd be having so much fun if you just stopped being so afraid!"
  163. "You act like that's even possible!"
  164. >She smiles at you, and you feel her horn tug on your shirt, pulling you up a little straighter.
  165. >"Look! Just look! Forget the view and watch the race!"
  166. >You sit up a little straighter, grimacing.
  167. >The suited showponies come back around for another pass, and you can FEEL the wind slam into you as you go.
  168. >Their speed was...well, it was exhilarating.
  169. >You'd never seen anything that fast before.
  170. >Before you know it, you let out a loud whoop, urging them to come back around, to fly faster.
  171. >To just GO.
  172. >You glance down at Rarity smiling at you.
  173. "Not a word."
  174. >"I wouldn't dream of it."
  175. >You both cheer as a yellow-red pegasus pulls into the lead, spinning around and leaving a cloud of smoke behind her as she crosses the finish line.
  176. >The crowd seems to explode, ponies raising their hooves and screaming as the Pegasus comes to a halt.
  177. "Okay, I'll admit. This is pretty awesome."
  178.
  179.
  180. "This is pretty crappy."
  181. >Rarity grimaces at you and shushes you as a few ponies look over at you in distaste.
  182. >"Anon!"
  183. "I'm just telling the truth. What's the point in tasting wine if you can't drink it?"
  184. >She sighs and puts a hoof to her forehead.
  185. >"Anon, it's a pastime of certain classy ponies. I do not expect you to-"
  186. >You bristle as your mother's remembered words from the morning come to you.
  187. "Am I not classy enough for you?"
  188. >Rarity eyes you strangely, a little hurt.
  189. >"That's not what I meant at a-"
  190. >"Ahem."
  191. >You both jump, Rarity's face coloring red in embarrassment.
  192. >You feel a little embarrassed yourself. And then your nose twitches.
  193. >"I, oh, do excuse me, Anon and I were just-"
  194. >"So this must be the wonderful couple I've heard so much about."
  195. >You turn around to view a smiling, black-coated mare.
  196. >She's wearing a fanciful dress, like most of the ponies at this whole wine-tasting thing, but she's different...
  197. >She smells awful, for one. Like chemicals and death.
  198. >Rarity doesn't seem to notice.
  199. >"What...exactly, have you heard?"
  200. >The mare giggles.
  201. >"Nothing but rumors, darling."
  202. >She glances up at you before leaning in and whispering.
  203. >"What is he...like? In the bedroom, I mean. I'd imagine those fingers..."
  204. >Rarity's face goes a shade of crimson.
  205. >"I...why I...how rude! That is NONE of your business!"
  206. >The mare chuckles.
  207. >"Excuse me dear, excuse me. I was just SO curious."
  208. >Rarity sniffs, affronted.
  209. >"The relationship I have with Anonymous is nop0ny's business but mine."
  210. >The mare smiles.
  211. >"So you've never done it, then?"
  212.
  213.
  214. >You casually drink the wine bottle you'd snagged from the wine tasting when they'd kicked you out.
  215. >Not that you were complaining, watching Rarity buck a mare in the face was worth it.
  216. >"Of all the uncouth, rude, DISGUSTING things to ask a pony! And then to make snide insinuations in the middle of-"
  217. >You interrupt her, taking another drink.
  218. "She wasn't lying, you know."
  219. >Rarity turns her eyes up at you, sniffing.
  220. >"How much of that bottle have you had, Anon?"
  221. >You smile and shrug.
  222. "Not enough. Want some?"
  223. >She crinkles her snout.
  224. >"No thank you. But really, it's the PRINCIPLE of the thing."
  225. "What, pointing out that we havn't done it?"
  226. >"Is it THAT important to you?"
  227. >She stops and stamps a hoof on the cobblestone Canterlot street.
  228. >You pull up short, surprised at the anger in her voice.
  229. "Well...I mean...no, I guess? Shouldn't it be?"
  230. >Rarity gives a tired sigh.
  231. >"I...I'm not ready for that, Anon. I don't think WE'RE ready for that."
  232. >You sigh and take another drink.
  233. "When WILL we be? I've known you for HOW long, now?"
  234. >Rarity's face grows red.
  235. >"Is THAT the only reason you've...that we've..."
  236. >You sigh and close your eyes.
  237. "No. God, no. I'm...that's not what I meant. I just...that's all I know to do, marshmallow. That's the only way it's...the only way it's ever been."
  238. >Rarity closes her eyes and lets out a frustrated sigh.
  239. >"You're drunk."
  240. "M'not."
  241. >"Give me the bottle, Anon."
  242. >You sigh and hand it over.
  243. >Then you start walking away from her.
  244. >"Where are you going."
  245. "I'm gonna take a walk. I need to think."
  246. >"About what?"
  247. "I'll meet you back at the room."
  248.
  249.
  250. >WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU.
  251. >You scowl as you take another drink.
  252. >You were currently slumped against a tree on a green hill, in some fancy Canterlot park.
  253. >You'd stolen two wine bottles, but Rarity only had to know about the one you had kept in your hand.
  254. >It wasn't fixing the problem.
  255. >Booze ALWAYS fixed the problem!
  256. >It's what you used when you...after you'd...when your Mother died.
  257. >You scowl as your thoughts go back to her.
  258. >This was her fault. Her stupid as fuck advice, that's what it was.
  259. >IT WASN'T JUST THAT.
  260. >Oh no, not you. You were the last thing you needed to hear right now.
  261. >You take another drink, determined to drown the dark half in wine.
  262. >You didn't want to hear what it had to say. You already knew what it would tell you.
  263. >The problem wasn't your mothers advice, not totally.
  264. >The problem was you. You, who'd tried to compare HER to every other one-night stand in your life.
  265. >You, who'd been confronted with something new and been too scared to change.
  266. >You, who was too afraid to admit you knew jack shit about real love.
  267. >Dancing and drinking and sleeping with loose women wasn't love.
  268. >You didn't plan on leaving her the next morning, so why insist on it?
  269. "What the fuck was I thinking?"
  270. >You hear a quiet gasp from somewhere behind you, and jump.
  271. >You'd come here at night, thinking no one would see you.
  272. "Shit! Sorry, don't mean to startle you..."
  273. >You trail off as the source of the gasp comes trotting around the tree, a smile on her face.
  274. >You raise a confused eyebrow as she speaks.
  275. >"No, no, don't apologize. I'm...surprised to see you out and about, is all."
  276. "Fleur de lis?"
  277.
  278.
  279. >She smiles.
  280. >"Hello Anonymous."
  281. >You sit back against the tree and take another drink, still confused as hell.
  282. "Fleur. What are you...I mean, what?"
  283. >She giggles at your confusion.
  284. >"I should be the one confused at your presence, not the other way around. I love this park, Anonymous. I come here to think quite frequently. Which begs the question..."
  285. >She trots up to you, grinning wryly.
  286. >"Why are you out here?"
  287. >You shrug, taking another drink and scowling.
  288. "Thinking. I think."
  289. >Punishing yourself for being a dumb ass was more like it.
  290. >She smiles at you response and points a hoof at the wine bottle.
  291. >"I can see that. Where is Miss Rarity?"
  292. >You sigh and put your head in your palm.
  293. "Home, the room, I mean. Probably."
  294. >Fleur raises an eyebrow.
  295. >"Such an imprecise answer."
  296. >You grunt.
  297. "It's been an imprecise type of day."
  298. >You look up from your eyes as you feel something warm next to you.
  299. >Fleur's sat down next to you, her back against the tree.
  300. >"Lover's quarrel?"
  301. "No...not really?"
  302. >She hmmphs, before her horn glows.
  303. >Your wine bottle POOFS out of your hand and next to her snout, and she takes a quick drink.
  304. >"Tell me about it?"
  305. >You snort.
  306. "Why?"
  307. >She smiles.
  308. >"Perhaps I'm bored. Anon, come now, it's not every night a bored, beautiful rich mare falls into your lap."
  309. "How...arrogant."
  310. >She smiles.
  311. >"Just being truthful. Now..."
  312. >You feel a hot breath on your ear.
  313. >"Tell Madame Fleur all about you problems, and let's see what I can do to make them go away."
  314.
  315.
  316. >You jump, looking at her in surprise and tipsy anger.
  317. "Wait a sec. Whoa, what the-"
  318. >Fleur draws back, smiling demurely.
  319. >"Calm down, Anon. We're just talking. Nop0ny ever got hurt by talking, did they?"
  320. >She takes another drink of your stolen wine.
  321. >You stare at her for a second, and then sit back down.
  322. "Give me back my wine."
  323. >She magics you the bottle, still smiling.
  324. >You take a drink.
  325. "I don't know what I'm doing."
  326. >"What do you mean?"
  327. "I feel...lost. I love her. I know I love her, but she and I..."
  328. >Fleur frowns at you, moving her face in close.
  329. >"I heard what happened at that wine tasting earlier today. It's the talk of the town. Are things not...working...in the bedroom?"
  330. >You chuckle.
  331. "That's one way to put it. Maybe what's not working is me trying to get it working at all."
  332. >You lean your head back against a tree.
  333. "She's right. We aren't...we aren't ready for that. Not yet. I'm too fucked up."
  334. >Fleur clucks her tongue in dissapproval."
  335. >"Anonymous, come now. You're a stallion. Well, a male. It's only natural you should want that kind of...relationship, is it not?"
  336. >She leans in closer, and you get a whiff of that strange chemical smell, along with her perfume.
  337. >"Why don't you come with me, Anon?"
  338. "What?"
  339. >"Let's you and I take a moonlit stroll. No more sad thoughts. I'll show you the Canterlot night life."
  340. >She reaches a hoof out to you.
  341. >"Take my hoof. Let Lady Fleur take the pain away."
  342. >Why not?
  343. >Why the fuck not?
  344. >You'd been looking to do a barcrawl anyway.
  345. >And Fleur....
  346. >Fleur was beautiful.
  347. >You raise your hand...
  348.
  349.
  350. >NO.
  351. >Your head bursts into a sudden headache, and you wince as your sense of smell sharpens.
  352. >You raised hand comes to your nose as pain explodes in your head.
  353. >NO. YOU WILL NOT DO THIS, WEAKLING.
  354. >You growl and back away from Fleur, astounded and in sudden agony.
  355. >It shouldn't be strong enough to...the potion should...
  356. >IT WILL NOT LAST FOREVER. IT CANNOT.
  357. >What the fuck does IT care who you-
  358. >SMELL HER.
  359. >The thing's compulsion, sharp and furious, makes your eyes widen as you take a sniff.
  360. >That smell, that chemical smell, invades your senses, so thick and cloying it makes you want to cough.
  361. >Like chemicals and death and mold and rot, all mixed up in one.
  362. >And something...something else...
  363. >PHEREMONES.
  364. >Fair a what?
  365. >You feel the dark half snarl in your head, refusing to answer.
  366. >Fleur, for her part, moves towards you, her eyes screwed up in concern.
  367. >"Anon? Is everything alright?"
  368. "Yeah, just give me a minute Fleur. Think I drank too much..."
  369. >You cough, struggling with the monster in your head.
  370. >LOOK...AT...HER...HORN.
  371. >You turn away from mentally beating the dark half back into submission.
  372. >Her horn was glowing.
  373. >You glance at the wine bottle in the grass.
  374. >What the fuck was she doing?
  375. >DECIEVER. TRICKSTER. GREENLING.
  376. >You feel the dark half twist something in your face, and you cry out in pain, getting up and backing away from Fleur.
  377. >That smell, the second smell...it had INVERTED somehow. She stank!
  378. >And your head...it felt like you were about to fall asleep, and you were wide awake again.
  379. >You stand straight up.
  380. "Listen...Fleur, I've...I've gotta go."
  381. >Her eyes widen in shock as you turn and start to jog away.
  382. >"Anon! Wait! Where are you going?"
  383.
  384.
  385. >You gagged and coughed as you ran, heedless of your environment, feeling drunk with terror.
  386. >That smell...
  387. >You could smell it coming from her as she followed you.
  388. >"Anonymous? Wait! Wait for me!"
  389. >No.
  390. >Not just no, but fuck no.
  391. >Whatever Fleur was, you wanted nothing to do with it.
  392. >She'd been fucking with your head.
  393. >The dark half had tried to warn you.
  394. >The smell...
  395. >You should have picked up on the goddamn smell.
  396. >It had started when you met her, at the play...
  397. >And that one mare at the wine tasting...
  398. >You needed to get the hell out.
  399. >You needed to get back to her.
  400. >Back to the mare you loved.
  401. >Back to Rarity.
  402. >You keep running, heedless of Fleur panting as she runs after you.
  403. >The smell increases in intensity, and your nose twitches.
  404. >Whatever she's doing she's trying to do it harder.
  405. >You run at the nearest building, grabbing hold of the ridges of the alabaster towers.
  406. >No, fuck this. Fuck Fleur, fuck Blueblood, fuck this whole city.
  407. >There was something wrong here.
  408. >Now that the other half was awake, you could smell it all around you.
  409. >That sharp, chemical stink.
  410. >You needed to get back to her, right now.
  411. >You scramble up the side of the building like a spider, ignoring the fierce temptation to just CHANGE and get it over with.
  412. >The howling in the back of your mind makes you stumble as you claw your way to the rooftops.
  413. >You can't hear Fleur anymore.
  414. >But the smell still follows you.
  415. >You start running, jumping over purple spires and leaping across roofs as you run.
  416. >You see the tower in the distance, and you dare not look behind you for the smell.
  417. >You had to make it before whatever it was caught up.
  418.
  419.
  420. >Where WAS he?
  421. >You idly take another sip of the stolen wine, cursing to yourself for the thousandth time.
  422. >You shouldn't have let him go.
  423. >He was CLEARLY drunk, or on the verge of it.
  424. >But after..after what he said...
  425. >Did he think you were some kind of harlot?
  426. >HAD you been taking things too slow?
  427. >You take another drink.
  428. >Just to calm your nerves, of course.
  429. >You hear a rapping on the chamber door.
  430. >You sigh, and turn to the door, pulling it open with your magic.
  431. >"Anon?"
  432. ANON'S PERSPECTIVE
  433. >There she was.
  434. >Your bottle of wine, nearly empty, sat on a nearby table.
  435. >You'd caught her mid-pace, one hoof raised, and a red blush on her cheeks.
  436. >You run over to her, gasping and confused and more than a little scared.
  437. >You grab her in your arms, shaking.
  438. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
  439. >She freezes up, confused.
  440. >"Anon, no. I should be sorry. I didn't stop to consider how humans..."
  441. >You shake your head.
  442. "No. No. That was me being stupid. That's...you were right. We aren't ready. And it doesn't matter if we ever are. I don't need to fuck you to know I love you."
  443. >You hear her take in a sharp breath.
  444. "I shouldn't have left."
  445. >"What...Anon, what happened?"
  446. "We need to go. Back home, somewhere else, I don't know, but we should get the fuck out of Canterlot."
  447. >"Anonymous?"
  448. >You close your eyes and take a deep breath.
  449. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
  450. >You feel a pair of hooves curl around you in a hug.
  451. >"Anon, shhh. Shhh, it's okay. Talk to me. What happened?"
  452. >You don't respond. How could you, after what you had almost done?
  453. "I...we just have to go. Ponyville. Back to Ponyville."
