  2. >You groggily awaken to the sound of light rain beating down on top of the tent
  3. >Where..?
  4. >Oh right, you’re back at the camp after the raid you did with your team
  5. >…And you got chewed out by Aegis…
  6. >Just thinking of the night prior made you want to roll back over in your cot and go back to sleep, least you have to go and get yelled at again
  7. >But you need to get up; it would be unbecoming of a commanding officer to lie about
  8. >You push the rough blanket off of you, wincing when it caught on the hastily done bandage of your leg
  9. >Looking down at said bandage you can’t help but grimace when you see blood has soaked through, leaving a dark patch on the cot as well as the bandage
  10. >You stand, feeling a bolt of pain race up your leg from the action
  11. >Looking over your shoulder you see with a sigh that Aegis is nowhere to be found
  12. >Maybe better in the short run but…
  13. >You bring a hand to your head and sigh
  14. “Let’s just get this over with”
  15. >After changing the wraps around your leg wound and donning your half set of armor, you walk out of the tent to see the camp covered in a light sheen of water thanks to the gray skies providing a light drizzle
  16. >The able guards are going about business as usual, keeping the perimeter secure, tending to their weapons and armor, and to your pleasant surprise some of the injured ones were up and about.
  17. >Scanning the encampment as best you could with the rain getting in your eyes, passing over the myriad of tents, a unicorn passing out bowls of stew at a campfire, and your team huddled together talking, you see Aegis looking up into the rain near the edge of the camp, a look of pure conflict etched into her beautiful face.
  18. >Another stab of pain hits you in the chest, you are the cause of this…you’re giving her this grief
  19. >Silently, you walk up to stand next to her, slipping your hands into your pockets and staring up at the sky with her
  20. >She glances at you, but says nothing
  21. >For several minutes you and her stand there, the silence only broken by the pitter-patter of the gentle rain
  22. >A wave of nervousness runs down your spine, making the chill of the rain seem like nothing
  23. >What would she say?
  24. >How would this affect your relationship with her?
  25. >You bite your lip so hard that it almost bleeds
  26. >…Would she want to leave you?
  27. >Never before had you been so grateful for the rain hiding the sweat on your face
  28. >”Anon…”
  29. >You look down at your superior officer and lover so see her still facing the sky
  30. >She says nothing for a moment then: “I’m sure you know why I was angry last night”
  31. >As she said, the raid could have lead more changelings to the encampment, the last thing you needed
  32. >You mutely nod, making water drip from your face
  33. >She sighs, a quiet sound
  34. >”Anon, I placed a lot of trust in you for this leadership position” Aegis says slowly, as if tasting each word before it comes out of her mouth
  35. >Your stomach ties itself into a knot, here it comes… the part where she discharges and dumps you in one go
  36. >You clinch your eyes shut, waiting for the verbal blow
  37. >”And you broke it”
  38. Why can’t she just get this over with? …you feel like you’re going to be sick
  39. >”But…”
  40. >But?
  41. >You hear her walk up to you, then feel the familiar weight of her hooves settle on your shoulders
  42. >What?
  43. >Without any warning a pair of soft lips press themselves to yours, love and concern practically flowing off of them
  44. >Is she..?
  45. >You dare to crack open an eye
  46. >In front of you, to your joy is Aegis, kissing you with an expression so tender it looks like she would wilt at one touch
  47. >She breaks off and pulls back, looking deep into your eyes
  48. >”It’ll take time before I think I can fully trust you again Anon” she says with a soft tone
  49. >Slowly, elation fills you
  50. >She’s not going to leave you!
  51. >”But I can’t bear the thought of being apart, last night tore me up” the white mare says, resting her head on your shoulder
  52. >You wrap your arms around her tight, pulling her as close to you as you could
  53. >The stabbing pain in your chest vanishes, being replaced with warmth that radiates into your limbs
  54. >This…this is new
  55. >You had felt this before, but never this strongly
  56. >Is…is this what love felt like?
  57. >Before you could ponder further Aegis pulls away from you, her front hooves landing in the wet grass with a “splish”
  58. >You lock eyes with her, trying to formulate words
  59. “Aegis…”
  60. >You  sigh, what to say?
  61. “…I’m sorry…”
  62. >She smiles faintly
  63. >”It’s fine Anon, just please, think about what you’re doing next time”
  64. >Her demeanor brightens as the gloomy conversation passes
  65. >”Comon, let's head back to camp, no sense sitting here in the rain right?" She says with a full smile
  66. >You feel the corner of your lips twitch upward, before your own smile finds its way to your face
  67. “Lead the way, Captain” you say, throwing in a mock salute
  68. >Aegis rolls her eyes with a small grin as she begins the trot back to the encampment
  69. >You follow along, letting your mind wander to other important things now that your fight with Aegis has more or less been solved.
  70. >The reinforcements that Aegis had requested would be here later today, hopefully the added numbers would deter any would-be attackers
  71. >You should probably talk this over with her first though; not doing so is what got you in trouble last time
  72. >Back in the camp you and Aegis made a beeline for the command tent, both of you soaked to the bone and not wanting to get any more wet than you already are
  73. >Once inside the large tent, Aegis disassembles her armor and stacks it neatly in the corner, while you simply tear yours off, eager to be out of the cold metal casing
  74. >In a jaw-dropping display of magic, Aegis lights up her horn and envelops herself in a light magenta glow
  75. >With the sound of flowing liquid, droplets of water pull themselves from her fur and condolence into a perfectly round sphere of water the size of a softball in front of her, leaving the white mare perfectly dry
  76. >The sphere almost glows with the colors of the rainbow thanks to its perfectly round form, making you blink at the simple but captivating beauty
  77. >A bright smile on her face, she sends the orb of liquid out of the tent with a flick of her neck, making it fly out and splash against the ground outside
  78. >How in the world is she so good magic?
  79. >You had seen unicorns back at Cantorlot who struggled even with simple levitation
  80. >Yet Aegis had just dried herself by levitating countless drops of water out of her fur at once
  81.  “Aegis, if you don’t mine me asking, haw did you become so good at magic?”
  82. >She blushes some at the flattery “Well Anon, I’m an Expression Positive unicorn, so really it’s more genes than anything”
  83. >Genes?
  84. >Are there different tiers of unicorns?
  85. >Something new every day in this pastel wonderland…
  86. “What do you mean?” you ask, crossing your arms in confusion
  87. >The unicorn thinks to herself for a moment, her eyes looking up at her horn as she dried you off in the same manner she did herself
  88. >Wait what?
  89. >She is…
  90. >But how?
  91. >You watch closely as the aura of her magic forms around you but doesn’t make contact with your skin, just grabbing the water in droplets less than a hairs width from your skin and collecting them in an orb
  92. >But even your proximity to the aura should have dissipated it
  93. >Is your Anti-Magic fading? Or had Aegis simply found a way around it?
  94. >Neither sits well with you, not that you were worried about Aegis doing anything, but if an enemy were to emulate it…
  95. >She looks at you, more specifically your worried face “Just some concentration Anon, trust me when I say you are still very magic immune”
  96. >The guardsmare sends the water ball outside as she begins her explanation
  97. >”There are the types of p0nies when it comes to ability” Aegis begins, closing her eyes and raising her head, looking every bit like a teacher
  98. >”First, there is the most common, Expression Neutral, most p0nies fall into this category. Expression Neutral p0nies are normal, everyday ponies. They have the abilities that everyp0ny knows about, flight and weather manipulation for pegasi, strength and nature attunement for earth p0nies, and levitation and talent related magic for unicorns”
  99. >Aegis takes a moment to think about the next one
  100. >”Then there is Expression Positive, only about 10% of p0nies can call themselves E Positive, and all alicorns are this one by default. Being E Positive means that the p0ny has an extraordinary talent, powers outside of their talent or are simply powerful, sort of like me” she says with a hint of pride
  101. >You grin slightly, she had that right
  102. >Aegis then takes a more somber tone “Then the last, Expression Negative”
  103. >Expression Negative huh?
  104. >”These are the most unfortunate of p0nies, only about 1% of them make up the population. An E Negative has so little magic running through them that they’re almost helpless…” she says looking down
  105. >You feel your scalp prickle at the dark turn this has taken
  106. >To live in a wonderful world like this and be useless?
  107. >”None of the usual traits of their race work, no flying for pegasi, no magic for unicorns, no strength for earth p0nies”
  108. >She trails off, leaving you both in silence save for the beating of the rain on the tent
  109. >”But some of the greatest minds of the ages have been E Negative” Aegis continues, lightning up some “In fact, Star Swirl the bearded was E Negative, and yet he was hailed as the greatest magic scholar ever”
  110. >Really?
  111. >So Star Swirl was Equestria’s Stephen Hawking?
  112. “Huh, the more you know…” you mutter to yourself
  113. >Aegis nods silently
  114. >You seat yourself down on a cot, idly making note of the chill the rain has caused
  115. “You know what else I know?”
  116. >She looks at you with a tilted head “What?”
  117. “Heh, that it’s damn cold” you reply, rubbing your arms
  118. >Aegis raises an eyebrow “I don’t feel it”
  119. “Well you have a nice coat of fur, I don’t” you say with a frown
  120. >It’s at time like this you wish you had some foresight, and then maybe you would have brought a jacket
  121. >She thinks to herself before grinning “Then maybe I should share?” she asks
  122. >Without letting you reply, she gets up into your cot and situates herself into your arms lying down
  123. >Instantly the chill is gone, the warm p0ny snuggled up to you driving it away
  124. >You just smile and shake your head
  125. “You’re a cuddle bug, you know that?”
  126. >”You say that like it’s a bad thing” she shoots back amusedly, her cerulean eyes sparkling
  127. >Raising your hands in mock defeat, you settle with lying back onto the cot, bringing Aegis with you
  128. >With her settled on your chest, you stare languidly at the tent ceiling, content with looking at the shadowy blobs of rain through the fabric as they collected and ran down the side
  129. >Turning your eyes to Aegis, you see her lightly dosing with a smile
  130. >Nothing was said
  131. >Nothing needed to be said
  132. >It had to have been an hour of lazing about, seeing as there was no trouble the be seen and the foul weather was keeping everyone in their tents
  133. >Then a thought comes to you
  134. “Shiny? You awake?” you ask quietly
  135. >You feel her nod, but she still seems to be only half-awake
  136. “Any idea when the reinforcements will arrive?”
  137. >Aegis sniffs and takes a moment to reply, eyes still closed “Should be anytime now…I was told they should be here by the evening at the latest…” she says sleepily
  138. >Why is she so tired?
  139. “What’s wrong with you babe? You seem tired”
  140. >She cracks open an eye “I just didn’t sleep well is all”
  141. >You can’t help but feel it was your fault in some way but push it back in favor of your other concerns
  142. “So, what are our long-term plans here?” you ask
  143. >Aegis grumbles to herself drowsily for a second “Oh you know…” she starts, looking like shes ready to nod off “…live our careers…get some awards…get married…have a few foals…spoil the grandfoals when we’re old…the good life…”
  144. >Erm…
  145. “Shiny um…let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, I was talking about the mission” you say, your cheeks burning red awkwardly
  146. >”What are you…?” her head shoots up, eyes wide as she realizes what she just said
  147. >”Oh wow…um…I…” she looks away, her own face red with embarrassment
  148. >Suddenly the sound of hooves on wet ground sound outside of the tent as a guard stops infront of it
  149. >”Captain! The reinforcements have been sighted!” cries a stallion on the other side of the tent flap
  150. >”Right, on the way!” Aegis replies, obviously happy for the distraction
  151. >Hopping off of you and putting on her armor, she races out of the tent to where the others are gathered near the edge of the forest
  152. >Well shit, there goes your answers
  153. >Sighing, you stand and stretch, before putting on your own armor and strapping your halberd to your back
  154. >Walking out of the tent into the now barely misting rain, you walk to the spot where the others are gathered, the mud squishing under your greaves
  155. >Once there you look around to notice everyone of the guards wearing an expression of disbelief
  156. >What’s going on?
  157. >You walk to the front where Aegis is, taking care not to slip in the mud around the guards
  158. >Her face is set into horror, alarming you some
  159. ”Shiny?” you ask worriedly, what could make her this afraid
  160. >She just points a hoof out near Trottingham
  161. >You turn and squint your eyes
  162. >Out in the distance is…
  163. >The reinforcements?
  164. >Yep, about 40 guards in gold armor are marching on the camp
  165. >But why are..!
  166. >Then you see it
  167. >Leading the group in the biggest, gaudiest, most eyesore set of armor ever…
  168. >Is the ever smug looking Prince Blueblood
