4. >That creature is still approaching.
5. >It better not be here for the artifact in the tome.
6. >The tall thing stops in front of you.
7. “Halt. State your business.”
8. >Before you can spring into action, a polite male voice invades your ears.
9. >”I would simply like to see what's in here.”
10. >Your chest deflates in relief.
11. >Thank goodness.
12. >As if somep0ny else would know what lies in this place.
13. >And as if they would be dumb enough to stage a heist.
14. >You sigh.
15. >What in Luna's name are you thinking?
16. >You hate to admit it but...
17. >The kleptomania is really out of hand by now.
18. >Shoplifting and pickpocketing is your game, not a whole convoluted plan to steal the most sacred artifact to batponies.
19. >It's a miracle you're even part of the royal guard...
20. >”Well, we can't let you in.”
21. >Ah yes. You're part of the royal guard.
22. >”Why ever not? I wanna see what's inside.”
23. >Your black-maned partner goes to raise her petite voice.
24. >“Well-”
25. >Naturally, you interrupt.
26. “This place has something inside that the general public cannot see. This includes you. Now scram!”
27. >”O-okay, ma'am.”
28. >He turns and goes off on his merry way.
29. >”You know, I really think you should stop being so vicious to citizens.”
30. “Jasmine, that WASN'T a citizen. He wasn't even a pony, for Pete's sake!”
31. >She frowns at you.
32. >”It's not like he was planning anything!”
33. >Jasmine isn't a bright one.
34. “For all you know, he could've killed either of us right there and then. Don't trust the unknown.”
35. >”I-I just think you should treat all creatures with equal respect.”
36. >She always stutters when she's getting frustrated.
37. >Kinda funny, really.
38. “Respect is earned.”
39. >With that, the uncomfortable lack of chitchat returns.
40. >Something seemed off about that two-legged entity.
41.
42. >A thought sparks in your head.
43. >That creature is still in your line of sight...
44. “I'm going to follow him.”
45. >”What? Are you crazy?! You'll be kicked out of the royal guard for sure!”
46. >She knows nothing.
47. “For all we know, he could be a threat to the safety of Hollow Shades. I need to make sure that nothing happens.”
48. >”But- I...! You know what, I give up!”
49. >She sits affixed to her post, grumbling something about regulations.
50. >Silly mare.
51. >You begin your pursuit.
52. >Following the mostly-hairless being, you dart in between ponies.
53. >Gotta keep in the crowd, but...
54. >Precision is somewhat of a requirement in stealth.
55. >Something that you lack.
56. >Your face falls flat upon the ground as you trip over the hoof of some stallion.
57. >His wings extend out for some reason.
58. >”O-oh s-sorry ma'am! I'll help y-you up!”
59. >From your position on the ground you feel a faint throb.
60. >Oh.
61. >That's what that wing thing is.
62. “Get outta here, you sicko.”
63. >He gets off of your coat.
64. >”Uh, okay sir! Argh! I mean ma'am!”
65. >He runs away as fast as he can.
66. >Damn freak.
67. >Now time to find that-
68. >Oh no...
69. >Where's he gone?!
70. >You swear you saw him head around the corner before that you tripped over that stallion.
71. >Wings extended, you begin to fly atop the hubbub.
72. >Above the buildings now.
73. >Scanning the ground below with your echolocation, you find an anomaly in the crowd.
74. >Time to try blend in.
75. >You swoop down to where you won't be seen by the peculiar being.
76. >Tracing something as tall as two ponies seems easy enough...
77. >But today, it is as though every batpony in Equestria had come to Hollow Shades.
78. >You hop along, trying to keep track of him.
79. >...Where's he going?
80. >Is that...
81. >Ample Dusk's house?
82.
83. >After you slip and slide in between ponies, you finally come to the front door.
84. >...Is this a wise idea?
85. >Probably not, but when has that ever stopped you?
86. >You're Quiet Dawn after all, and you're a master of thievery.
87. >And thievery ain't a wise idea.
88. >You knock on the door.
89. >From inside, you hear panicked voices.
90. >What's going on in there?
91. >A tired, worn-out voice shouts.
92. >”J-just a minute!”
93. >What's taking these folks?
94. “Are you-”
95. >Before you can finish, the door springs open.
96. >A half-dead batpony meets your gaze, then he stumbles backwards.
97. >”O-oh, what are you here for, officer?”
98. >Oh, for goodness sake.
99. >You forgot to prepare some excuse.
100. >Gotta
think
fast.
101. “Uh, checks. The guard heard reports there's a fugitive being harboured in Hollow Shades.”
102. >As you say that, you see the big creature.
103. >He's... quite a sight.
104. >Him and Ample Dusk look at each other in worry.
105. >...Something's going on here.
106. “May I come in?”
107. >”Uh. Uh. Sure.”
108. >You trot in slowly, making sure your authority is placed.
109. >Looking around you inspect the place with a nonchalant expression, in hopes that you'll intimidate the old pony into telling you what's going on here.
110. >Point to the tall thing.
111. “Well, my fugitive is here. But I feel there's something going on here that I'm unaware of.”
112. >The pair begin to sweat.
113. >You slide along the floor to the tall one.
114. “Care to tell me anything, sir...?”
115. >”A-anon. It's Anon.”
116. “Ah. Anon. Well, is there anything you want to tell me?”
117. >He looks to you, then back at Ample.
118. >”Should we just come clean?”
119. >”Whatever... She already knows there's something going on.”
120. >With that, a pony you'd never thought you'd see again pops out from underneath the couch.
