  4. >This is bad.
  5. >This is REALLY bad.
  6. >If Luna can think of anything else worse to happen right now, let it.
  7. >Because there isn't a thing worse than someone of the Royal Guard finding out you're stowing away in your father's home.
  8. >In Hollow Shades, where you have been banished from.
  9. >How on Equestria could you be so stupid?!
  10. >This is ridiculous! What a foolish idea to search for Anon!
  11. >And what a foolish human he is to come here!
  12. >Did he expect answers?
  13. >To what questions?
  14. >You and your father didn't even get enough time to chat, and now you're gonna be taken away from him forever!
  15. >Distractions, distractions...
  16. >Time to focus on what's at hand.
  17. >You can hardly take a glance at the mare in front of you.
  18. >The guard looks you up and down.
  19. >She paces the room a bit, waiting for somep0ny to say something.
  20. >When she gets impatient, she makes the first move.
  21. >”Who's this we have here then?”
  22.
  23. >That guard from earlier is standing in front of Echo.
  24. >What does she want?
  25. >Her focus is on your friend right now, but she seemed to follow you back here.
  26. >Why else would she just happen to show up at the only house in Hollow Shades that holds a human?
  27. >And...
  28. >Could she know what your plan is?
  29. >”E-Echo, ma'am.”
  30. >Your friend shuffles around on the floor, not daring to look the guard in the eye.
  31. >The armoured pony scrapes her chin, smiling deviantly.
  32. >”You're the one who tried to yank the Chronicle, aren't you?”
  33. >Echo nods.
  34. >”And the one who was subsequently banished from Hollow Shades, aren't you?”
  35. >The gray pony turns a shade whiter.
  36. >”And you're the one who I could send to Luna herself, find out what kind of punishment awaits you from our Princess Of Night, aren't you?”
  37. >She's backed up completely into the corner
  38. >Lets out a little squeal too.
  39. >The Chronicle, huh.
  40. >It's kind of silly to think about.
  41. >It's also a betrayal to your friend.
  42. >If all she got was a banishment...
  43. >What will happen to you?
  44. >You are an outsider after all.
  45. >A somewhat welcome stranger, but stranger nonetheless.
  46. >This guard seems to be playing upon that fact.
  47. >”Anon, why are you here, and more importantly, what the hay are you?”
  48. >You wipe beads of sweat from your forehead.
  49. “I'm, a, erm-”
  50. >”Spit it out already!”
  51. >Pushy.
  52. “A human.”
  53. >”A what now?”
  54. >If you had a bit for every time this happened...
  55. “Just- think of me as a tall monkey. Without all the hair.”
  56. >”But there's some on your head.”
  57. >You pinch the bridge of your nose.
  58. “I'm well aware of that.”
  59. >”But you said-”
  60. “I thought you'd figure that there's still hair there.”
  61. >She snickers to herself.
  62. >”I was just messing you around.”
  63. >It's taking a lot of effort not to flip your shit.
  64. “And what's your name, guard?”
  65. >”That's none of your business.”
  66. “I could say the same about my species.”
  67. >She grumbles.
  68. >”Fine. It's Quiet Dawn.”
  69. >Her attention is drawn back to your friend.
  70. >A smile plays upon the guard's face.
  71. >She's plotting something.
  72. >”So, Echo.”
  73. >”Y-yes?”
  74. >She flashes a grin.
  75. >”Put these on.”
  76. >Quiet points to the rags Echo was wearing.
  77. >”Now, you'll have to keep your mouth shut. Some ponies might recognise you.”
  78. “What's going on?”
  79. >”You and your friend here are coming with me.”
  80. >A frail voice perks up.
  81. >”And what part do I play?”
  82. >She turns to him.
  83. >”A very important part indeed.”
  84. >His eyes widen with wonder.
  85. >”You get to stay here.”
  86. >Ample Dusk deflates.
  87. “Won't it look odd having some tall creature and a cloaked p0ny walking around?”
  88. >She scrapes her chin.
  89. >”Well. You may have a point there.”
  90. >Her hoof goes up, as if a lightbulb were above her head.
  91. >”It doesn't matter though, nopony questions the authority of a guard!”
  92. >Somehow, you doubt that.
  93. >Doesn't seem bright for one of Luna's “best”, this one.
  94. >Echo stops twitching for a moment to say something.
  95. >”Where are you t-taking us anyway?”
  96. >Mischief dances on the guard's face.
  97. >”You'll see.”
  98.
  99. >Outside in Hollow Shades, the three of you are back off to the catacomb.
  100. >You've attracted stares from stallions and mares all around.
  101. >This wasn't the plan that Quiet had laid out.
  102. >What was supposed to happen was that you'd all slip around the crowd, keeping to buildings.
  103. >The princess of the night had picked the wrong night however, and you had all been swept with the oodles of batponies from the sidelines.
  104. >Now you're in the middle of the square, an odd 3 indeed.
  105. >Echo, not having said anything the entire journey, almost looks as if she's shrunk a few inches.
  106. >The princess' regal voice can be heard all around the town.
  107. >”We request to see our guard!”
  108. >Quiet Dawn tenses up.
  109. >”Oh boy. Come on, we need to hurry.”
  110. >The guard quickens her step.
  111. >You and your friend follow suit.
  112. >In the distance, the princess yells again.
  113. >”Hmm! It would appear we are missing a guard! Where is Quiet Dawn?!”
  114. >The guard mutters something to herself.
  115. >There's a loud squeal from the huge crowd as your small crew nears the resting place of the Chronicle.
  116. >Echo begins to hyperventilate.
  117. >”I THINK I SAW HER WITH SOME BIG THING HEADING THAT-A-WAY!”
  118. >The guard's anger is heated now.
  119. >”Dammit, Jasmine!”
  120. >Echo turns, remembering the name.
  121. >You quietly call out to the mare.
  122. “Echo, we have no time, come on!”
  123. >As the three of you stand in front of the entrance, a huge whoosh from behind blows you forward.
  124. >”Ah yes, hello fair Quiet Dawn! It has been quite some time since we last met!”
  125. >The now petrified batpony turns in a shameful manner and bows.
  126. >Next to her, your friend simply trembles at the voice of
  127. >”Y-yes it has, Princess.”
  128. >”Can we enquire what thou was doing near the Chronicle?”
  129. >Quiet's eyes shrink, wondering what her punishment will be.
  130. >You speak up in a flash, saving all your asses.
  131. “Me and my traveller friend here were being shown the entrance to the thing your subjects revere most.”
  132. >The princess turns to you.
  133. >”What is this, Quiet Dawn?”
  134. >The guard extravagantly reveals you.
  135. >”This is Anon. He is a human!”
  136. >Luna look puzzled.
  137. >”What is... human?”
  138. “Tall monkey that doesn't have as much hair as regular ones.”
  139. >”And it talks too! This is delightful!”
  140. >Luna smiles with a childish joy.
  141. >The face you wear right now doesn't share her joy.
  142. >”Of course! Our Chronicle is of most wonder, even I do not know how its creation came!”
  143. >Echo still hasn't turned.
  144. >The princess looks at her, wrapped in tan.
  145. >”Traveller, what is your name?!”
  146. >Finally she turns.
  147. >”Princess, it is...”
  148. >You turn to her, slitted eyes begging her not to reveal.
  149. >”Reflect.”
  150. >Still hiding her face, Echo's eyes dot around.
  151. >”We do not believe we have had the pleasure of your acquaintance before. Welcome to Hollow Shades, robed one.”
  152. >One of pegasi guards accompanying Luna whisper into her ear.
  153. >You hadn't even noticed they were there til they moved.
  154. >”Now, friends, we must depart, royal business. We must do this again some time!”
  155. >The three ponies take off.
  156. >Quiet Dawn slumps against a nearby wall.
  157. >”Well, that was close.”
