Why? As far as you could fathom, there was no reason you should have saw what laid in your front yard. Parked atop the sidewalk, large objects protruding its exterior, was the strangest, most decimated-yet-still-functioning bus you had ever seen. Nolan sat in the driver’s seat with a sheepish grin, waving at you through the window. A flurry of thoughts infiltrated your mind, but only one stood out amongst the rest.
You had to get him out of here, fast.
“NOLAN,” You yelled as you slammed the front door open.
“I know what you’re thinking Norman,” he said while his attempts at turning on the engine with his other hand proved futile. “I’ll be out of here in a sec.”
“It doesn’t MATTER if you’re out of here in a second or not!” You claimed, running over to the driver’s side of the bus. “What DOES matter is that you somehow managed to do… THIS.” you gestured to the car itself, around half of the things that were on it you remembered once being solidly attached to the ground down the street.
“..Wait,” he questioned while he raised an eyebrow, “you’re angry about the bus, not the-“
“If you know what’s good for you, don’t say it, Nolan,” uttered a voice from the back of the bus. You managed to overshadow that response with your own.
“Of course I’m angry about the bus!” You worriedly exclaimed, not really thinking about what you said. “Why is the sign of the pharmacy down the street IMPALING the roof of it?!”
“Well…” he chuckled, his eyes darting from left to right as his hands made an attempt to get more comfortable with their positioning. “There’s a funny story about that actually-“
“I don’t CARE Nolan, just get out of here before-“ Sirens blared in the distance before you could even finish. Your head snapped to the east as your body began to shake.
“I’m TRYING Norman, it’s jammed!“
“Open the door,” you told him, rushing to the other side of the bus. It took a second for him to react, but despite the fact, the door opened as soon as you got to it. Your hand grabbed the key to the ignition and you strained with as much energy as you could muster to make it turn.
Somehow, the key didn’t break, and the engine sputtered to life. The sirens were closer than before, and instead of getting out of the bus and leaving Nolan to do… whatever it was he was doing before with whoever was in the car with him, you do the stupidest thing you had ever done.
You stayed in the car, and made no effort to leave it as the daring escape began. You willingly let yourself be a part of this for the long-haul.
Regret would be an extremely familiar emotion to you later on.
