Title: Don't Fuck Up User Manual Author: SPES Pastebin link: http://pastebin.com/PhJ4jPGk First Edit: Saturday 20th of June 2015 08:07:06 PM CDT Last Edit: Last edit on: Friday 26th of June 2015 07:00:23 PM CDT Hello and welcome to Don't Fuck Up: A Procedurally Generated Horsequest! Thanks to a unique (and likely forbidden) combination of powerful magic and advanced technology, we at Eranto Industries have built a machine that can create a fantastic adventure for your enjoyment before your very eyes; the Super Pony Entertainment System! Because this magitechnology is new and untested, this manual should help you to understand how best to interact with the machine, and what emergency steps to take should it finally achieve sapience and attempt to kill you.   Don't Fuck Up is the first in a long line of planned adventure modules, and is by far the most well-suited to showcasing the SPES's unique storycrafting ability. Originally devised as a test unit, DFU has ABSOLUTELY NO pre-programmed story content. Instead, that's all up to you! The unit will ask several general questions, and, based on your input, craft an entire adventure for you to embark upon then and there! What do you do in this adventure? Whatever you want! In truth, there is only one rule, that we hope to be rather obvious: DON'T FUCK UP. Other than that, you are free to explore and enjoy any of the fantastical worlds the SPES will create for you. So, the only question is:   Who do you want to be?   [Status Indicators]   During your adventures, the SPES will keep a low profile, to help maintain immersion. However, at certain times it will be necessary for the machine to notify you of certain things to better your experience. These are the STATUS INDICATORS, and they are designed to relay important information as concisely as possible.   [?]: Probably the most common indicator, this symbol will appear when the machine is waiting for input from you. Take care to closely examine the situation at hand, and submit an action accordingly. Or just do whatever! It doesn't matter. In the event of multiple commands being issued simultaneously, all non-conflicting commands will be queued and performed, if currently possible. In the event of conflicting commands, whichever is deemed more popular will be used.   [!]: Regardless of what path you take on your adventure, it is all but guaranteed to be wrought with danger. When a threat to the well-being of your current player-character has been assessed, this symbol will appear, notifying you that action needs to be taken immediately, lest you suffer the consequences of whatever is threatening you. Input a command  in the allotted time (default of fifteen minutes, though exceptions may occur) and you should be fine. As long as the chosen action will help you avoid the danger, anyway. But why wouldn't it? You're a smart player, we believe in you!   [>]: At times, certain things will simply be out of your control. In those situations, this symbol will appear, notifying you that a CUTSCENE is taking place. During this time no commands are accepted, so feel free to sit back and enjoy the show! Or don't! You have no choice in the matter, it's going to happen whether you like it or not.   […]: We at EI have made great strides in the entertainment magitechnology field, as well as several pacts with otherworldly beings of questionable ethics. However, despite the amazing power of the SPES, there are some things that even it needs some time to process. When this symbol appears, that means the machine is busy with a previous command or request, and doing its damn best to make something interesting out of it. Primarily it may show up before displaying a cutscene, due to the necessary resource allotment for proper rendering. However as it is simply a way for the machine to notify you that it hasn't locked up and is still working diligently, it can appear at any time, such as when generating a particularly large adventure or setting. We ask you to have patience at these times, though we sincerely hope them to be few and far between.   [||]: While the SPES is a miracle machine of astoundingly advanced technology and horrendously illegal ritualistic dark arts, all this power comes at a price; power consumption. At times, SPES will need to suspend activity for a period of time in order to recharge it's internal battery in order to function. Don't worry about finding an outlet; SPES does not run on something as non-essential to sapient life existing as "electricity". Instead, SPES will passively leech power from any nearby sources automatically. (Don't worry about what it actually uses, you won't feel a thing.) As well, SPES will save your current progress to it's internal memory at time of shutdown, using a different, smaller internal battery. (That one DOES use electricity, by the way.)     [Consequences]   What fun would an adventure be if everything went your way one hundred percent of the time? An important aspect of any adventure SPES can create is that many actions can and will have CONSEQUENCES. These can range from minimal (a character doesn't like you very much because you insulted their mother), to dire (a character tries to kill you because you insulted their mother by raping and killing her in a ditch before them when they were a child), and anything inbetween (a character is unsure of how to deal with you because while you raped and killed their mother in a ditch it was actually in self-defense as she was in reality a reverse-rapist murderer that lures men into raping her with slutty outfits and mannerisms so she can justifiably kill them with a knife and fulfill her sick fetishistic desires). In respect to the one rule, take care to measure your actions to the situation appropriately, to avoid potentially adventure-ending consequences down the line. Or, you can just screw around see what ridiculous scenarios the SPES cooks up. It's your adventure!   Not all consequences are negative, however. Like the universal theory of Karma, good deeds will in most cases not go unrewarded. Helping out some of the people and creatures you encounter in your adventure is sure to bring that positive energy back around at some point down the line, usually when you really need it. Most of the time, anyway. Just use your best judgment and everything should be fine. Probably.     [Chance Rolls]   Like most things in life, many of the events in your adventure will be based somewhat on chance. Any submitted task that is particularly difficult for your current PC to perform, as well as any action during a threatening situation, will be subject to a CHANCE ROLL. Do not worry about having to learn any deep, complex mechanics, the process is simple and automatic.   Whenever an input is submitted, it is assigned a certain number by an unseen higher power. This number is very important to the input's state of self-awareness and identity, as it is all that separates it from the chaotic, formless void of abstract thought that it came from. However, to SPES, only the last two digits of that number are considered, being added together to create that input's CHANCE SCORE. This score is then compared to a score that SPES generates itself at the time of decision, with the highest number being the winner. If your number is higher, the action is successful and occurs as normal. If SPES' number is higher, then you fail the attempt and are subject to any consequences that may come about.   It is also notable that when generating a Chance Score, a particular phenomenon may take place. When an input's ID number is generated, it is possible that it may be blessed by the GOD OF DUBS. This is a strange, still not fully understood form of magical interference, but what IS well understood is it's effect on a Chance Score. If both the numbers used for the score are the same, then the resulting action and its consequences will be magnified in power by a factor of two; in essence, DOUBLED. Take note however that this is not automatically a good thing; if the action fails, it is the failure that is doubled, which can certainly put a damper on your adventure really quick. There is sadly nothing that can be done in situations such as this, so pray for the gods' favor whenever you can. In addition, it is theorized that successive repeating numbers of an input's ID may further amplify this effect, though no instances of this have been recorded in laboratory conditions.   In the interest of fairness, 0s count as 10s for a Chance Score. As well, SPES will attempt to warn you beforehand if an action will require a Chance Roll, though at times this may not be possible.   [---]   Well, that's the gist of it! Any further information is up to you to figure out. Don't worry, it's probably not much. In the event anything DOES show up though, SPES has the ability to modify this document and add or change information based on what comes about, or create entirely new documents for player reference. It is a very powerful machine, the pride of our company. We appreciate your interest in our products, and encourage any questions, comments or complaints directed to our company hotline, 1-800-HORSEQUEST.   Now, get out there and explore! Just remember;   DON'T FUCK UP!
