  1. >Thunder and lightning crack and boom above Hollow Shades.
  2. >The sound is, fortunately, not enough to wake you.
  3. >The rumbling of the earth that vibrates through the trees, however, does.
  4. >Very little evening light filters through your bedroom window.
  5. >It's also pretty strange that you don't feel like you're upside down.
  6. >You discover that you lay on your back on the floor.
  7. >An attempt to roll over meets with failure.
  8. >You notice your breathes are incredibly shallow, the sound of rain drowning them out.
  9. >Something presses onto your chest as you try to move your limbs.
  10. >It feels like your walls are closing in on you, but they don't move.
  11. >You try to turn your head to look towards the window, but your neck muscles refuse to budge.
  12. >A figure starts to loom over you as it sits on your chest.
  13. >A crack of lightning lights the room up.
  14. >Its dull orange eyes glint from the light as it glares at you.
  15. >Its leathery bat wings spread to its sides.
  16. >A viscous red liquid drips from its sharp teeth and fangs.
  17. >You try to scream, but nothing comes out.
  18. >Its lips don't move as it starts to talk.
  19. >"What's wrong, Echo? Bat got your tongue?"
  20. >The voice is feminine, so you assume the bat p0ny to be a female.
  21. >You try to speak, but all that forms is a single thought.
  22. "Who are you?"
  23. >She cackles as the red liquid drips onto your face.
  24. >"You know what I am, Echo. You know why I'm here. You know why I've haunted your dreams for the past week."
  25. >Your breathing quickens as you feel like you're being suffocated.
  26. >She jumps at you, her jaw dislocating to help her rip at your face.
  27.
  28. >But nothing happens.
  29. >As you awake in a cold sweat, you notice there is no thunder or lightning to sound throughout the night.
  30. >No rain patters against your house's roof.
  31. >There is no sound, except for your brief scream.
  32. >Your heart threatens to dislodge itself from your chest as you uncling from the ceiling.
  33. >On the way to your bathroom, you mistake your hoofsteps for an intruder's, causing you to turn in the dark and click your tongue.
  34. >Nothing out of the ordinary.
  35. >You shake your head as you step into your bathroom and turn the lights on.
  36. >Two orange eyes meet your own as you look into the mirror.
  37. >You flash your fangs at your reflection and trace your tongue over them.
  38. >The dark navy and pale blue locks of your mane stick out in every direction.
  39. >You pick a brush up in your hoof and start to brush it all down.
  40. >Bags were starting to form under your eyes.
  41. >Where was Princess Luna when you needed her to safeguard your dreams?
  42. >Whatever was happening, you could only wait for her to return.
  43. >It had been announced about two weeks ago that she, along with the other princesses, needed to take care of some urgent business in the Crystal Empire.
  44. >You didn't understand how she couldn't continue doing what she normally did.
  45. >As expected, though, other bat p0nies were having nightmares.
  46. >Nop0ny would talk about what they saw in their nightmares.
  47. >Something about that was frightening, even moreso than what you were seeing.
  48. >Maybe it would be a good idea to write to Princess Luna.
  49. >Except, you weren't too sure on where to send it.
  50. >You sigh and press your face to the mirror.
  51. >Lack of peaceful sleep was taking its toll on you.
  52.
  53. >An owl hoots outside of your bathroom window.
  54. >You shudder as you leave the bathroom.
  55. >Time to start the night, and find your friends.
  56. >A small group of six of you were tasked to keep watch on Hollow Shades' south-western border.
  57. >None of you were told why, but you never questioned against a paying request.
  58. >And the town paid the six of you well, just for standing guard for a few hours.
  59. >You never saw anything, and nothing was ever reported.
  60. >But again, you didn't even know what you were looking for.
  61. >You shake the thoughts out of your head as you enter your living room.
  62. >It was the start of the night, and you needed to get to your station.
  63. >Helmet, check.
  64. >Armor necklace thing, check.
  65. >Lance, also check.
  66. >You were ready for anything.
  67. >Except more nightmares.
  68. >You shudder as you feel eyes bore into your back.
  69. >But as you turn to the source, your front door, nothing reveals itself.
  70. >Nothing, but a light tapping at your door.
  71. >You nearly jump out of your skin and cover your mouth with a hoof to stifle your scream.
  72. >It's probably just somep0ny at the door.
  73. >Maybe it was one of your friends, retrieving you to start the night and your guard duty.
  74. >You chuckle to yourself and approach the door.
  75. >You freeze and shudder as you reach a hoof towards the lock.
  76. >A voice in the back of your head tells you to keep it locked and to walk away.
  77. >The knocks sound again.
  78. >A soft voice calls from beyond the wooden barrier.
  79. >"Echo? Are you in there? We're gonna be late."
  80. >She sounds nervous, whoever it is.
  81. >You should recognize the voice, but your mind is blanked from your fear.
  82. >"Echo. It's Moonshine, we need to go."
  83. >You take a deep breath and unlock the door.
  84. >It swings open as Moonshine stares at you blankly.
  85. >"Another nightmare?"
  86. >You nod slowly and swallow hard.
  87. >"It's taking a toll on a lot of p0nies. Come on, maybe this job can get your mind off of things."
  88. "Yeah. Maybe."
  89.
  90. >On the way to your post, Midnight joins you and Moonshine.
  91. >She looks agitated and tired.
  92. "Midnight? Are you alright?"
  93. >"Of course I am. Why do you ask?"
  94. >"You look a little... tired."
  95. >Midnight looks away from you and Moonshine.
  96. >"Nah, I'm perfectly fine."
  97. >Moonshine shrugs and trots farther ahead as your post comes into view.
  98. "Are you sure you're okay? I can cover your shift if you need me to, for half of your pay."
  99. >"I can do this, Echo. I'm probably the strongest and most experienced p0ny in our group."
  100. >You can feel the venom in her voice.
  101. >It doesn't matter to you.
  102. >Her pride would do her in, and you could start covering her shift for more bits.
  103. >That was an awful thing to think.
  104. >She was kind of your friend, even though the two of you had a little bit of a rivalry.
  105. >"Come on, Echo. Moonshine's waving us over."
  106. >You look up and notice Moonshine beckoning to you.
  107. >You and Midnight rush to her.
  108. >As you approach, she points downward, at the base of one of the trees.
  109. >"Any idea why she's down there, when she should be up here in the lofts?"
  110. >"It looks like she's sleeping, Moonshine."
  111. >Moonshine sighs and taps you on the shoulder.
  112. >"Go get her."
  113. "What?! Why me? Why can't Midnight go get her?"
  114. >"Because she told YOU to, Echo. Or can you not do it because you're scared?"
  115. >You swallow hard as you step over to the edge of the wooden platform that was built around and hung from the trees.
  116. "I-I'm not scared!"
  117. >"Then hurry up. Our shift starts in about five minutes."
  118. >"Hey Moonshine, speaking of. Where are the other two?"
  119. >You don't hear the rest of their conversation as you leap from the platform.
  120. >Your heart races as you land beside the sleeping p0ny.
  121. "Lullaby? Lullaby, wake up. Our shift's about to start."
  122. >She groans and continues snoring as you push her with a hoof.
  123. >You hated dealing with this one.
  124. >She was incredibly lazy and tried to sleep as much as possible, or just throw her work on someone else.
  125. >The worst part was, she refused to skip shifts, so you couldn't cover for her and get her share of the pay.
  126. "Lullaby. Wake up!"
  127. >She finally rolls over, her eyelids cracking to reveal her bright green eyes.
  128. >"Oh. Hi, Echo. What brings you to this side of town.
  129. >You slap a hoof to your face.
  130. "It's almost time for us to start our watch, Lullaby."
  131. >She yawns and smiles up at you.
  132. >"Oh. Is it? I'm sorry, thanks for coming to get me."
  133. >She lazily flies up to Moonshine and Midnight.
  134.
  135. >Your own hooves clop against the wooden platform as you land behind the sleepy p0ny.
  136. "Where are the others?"
  137. >Moonshine shrugs and Midnight keeps looking toward the town.
  138. >"Not sure, Echo. It's strange, usually those two are the first ones here."
  139. "Oh, well. More money for us, right?"
  140. >Midnight nods as she turns to look over the edge of the edge of the platform.
  141. >"More money for us, but less information. Florence is usually the one to bring us all of the information from the mayor."
  142. >That was true.
  143. >For some reason, the mayor preferred to defer all information to Florence, who then passed what was needed to the rest of the group.
  144. >You never listened to it, you only cared about the money.
  145. >"Echo. Take your position and move forty wings to the right. Cover Florence's position. Midnight. You do the same, but to the left."
  146. >You take the appropriate spot on the platform and look down into the forest.
  147. >Four hours of just staring down into the woods.
  148. >You didn't care why, just that it paid enough bits to live for a week.
  149. >The strangest thing was, there was never a set of sentries to relieve you.
  150. >Your group just dispersed after the four hours was up.
  151. >And even passing by this spot at a later time revealed nop0ny watching.
  152. >It's been a week since the mayor initially requested this to be done.
  153. >But, four hours for several hundred bits wasn't bad work.
  154. >Even if it was boring.
  155. >"See anything, Echo?"
  156. >Midnight calls to you.
  157. "Nothing, as usual."
  158. >As you continue to look between the trees, a glint of gray and blue flashes through the undergrowth.
  159. >You raise an eyebrow and try to get a better look.
  160. >"See something?"
  161. "Just a rabbit, I guess."
  162. >The brush rustles again as a gray blob darts behind a tree.
  163. >Your muscles tense up as a gray ear slowly moves from behind it.
  164. >A dark orange eye peers up at you, causing your breathes to become short and shallow.
  165. >It's here.
  166. >Your nightmare is real.
  167. >The red liquid from your dream starts to pool from behind the tree, the creature's sharp fangs showing as it smiles at you.
  168. >Your vision starts to tunnel.
  169. >Her lips move, but you can't hear what she's saying.
  170. >Your vision blackens before you can start to read her lips.
  171. >You hit the platform as your legs numb and give way.
  172.
  173. >A hoof jabs into your side.
  174. >Several bat p0nies crowd around you.
  175. >Moonshine is the first to speak up.
  176. >"Echo? Are you alright?"
  177. >Midnight tries to help you up, but you just slack against her.
  178. >"You fell asleep, Echo. And you were panting and breathing heavily."
  179. >Moonshine looks at you and smiles.
  180. >"Our shift is over anyway. What do you say we hit the bars and try to relax?"
  181. >You nod and lean on Midnight as the three of you start walking into town with Lullaby in tow.
  182. "How long was I out?"
  183. >Moonshine sighs and looks over at you.
  184. >"Nearly the whole shift. Was it another nightmare?"
  185. >You nod slowly.
  186. >Lullaby lazily taps your shoulder.
  187. >"Care to tell us what was in it?"
  188. >You swallow hard.
  189. "I'm not too sure that's a good idea."
  190. >Midnight bumps you as you start to stand on your own.
  191. >"How about over a drink?"
  192. >You sigh.
  193. "If you're buying, then fine."
  194. >She glares at you.
  195. >"Fine, but only because I feel bad for you."
  196. >You lean into her and whisper into her ear.
  197. "You aren't much better off. I can tell you haven't been sleeping well."
  198. >She rolls her eyes, but you know her pride was going to get the best of her.
  199. >Midnight would never show weakness to anyp0ny at any time.
  200. >You knew her all too well.
  201. >"Shut up, Echo."
  202. >Free drinks on Midnight and all you had to do was talk about your nightmare.
  203. >Oh.
  204. >Wait.
  205. >There was an old mare's tale that if you talked about your nightmares, they'd come true.
  206. >You shudder and look over at Midnight, who smirks to herself.
  207. >She must know about it too.
  208. >Oh Luna, this was going to be a fun night.
  209.
  210. >The Mango Tree Pub.
  211. >One of the best pubs in all of Hollow Shades.
  212. >They had the best mango mead in all of Equestria.
  213. >Your favorite part about the place was that it smelled of fruits and cinnamon.
  214. >Lullaby sips at her pint of blood orange juice.
  215. >Moonshine has already downed three pints of apple spice wine.
  216. >Midnight glares at you as you suck down your second mug of mango mead, while she gingerly sips at her cherry wine.
  217. >She finally speaks up.
  218. >"So are you going to tell us about your nightmares?"
  219. >You sigh and shake your head.
  220. "I really, really don't want to. What if they come true?"
  221. >Moonshine laughs and slaps the table.
  222. >"Y-you mean like in thosh old mare's talesh? Keekeekee! Oh, Echo, pleash."
  223. >That wine wasn't even potent.
  224. >It was like two percent alcohol or something.
  225. >It was practically just apple juice.
  226. "Yeah. I mean, what if?"
  227. >Midnight rolls her eyes.
  228. >"Look, if you don't tell us, you can pay for my tab. I don't care either way."
  229. >You didn't want to spend more money than you ever had to.
  230. >Whatever, the worst that would happen was that a bat p0ny from your nightmares would cannibalize you and then go away.
  231. >That was pretty bad.
  232. >But on the other hoof, it WAS just an old mare's tale.
  233. >And how many of those actually had truthful merit to them?
  234. "Alright, fine. I'll tell you."
  235. >Midnight smirks.
  236. >"Good."
  237. >You take another sip of your mead.
  238. "Alright..."
  239. >Deep inhale and exhale.
  240.
  241. >Lullaby yawns throughout your story as Moonshine "drunkenly" comments on everything you say.
  242. >Midnight just sits there slack-jawed and wide-eyed as you explain to her.
  243. >You explain the paralysis, the weird feelings, how everything is distorted.
  244. >You describe the bat p0ny in your dreams, from her dark gray coat to her dark turquoise mane, to her judging orange eyes.
  245. >Midnight stops looking at you as you start on about the p0ny's teeth and the red liquid.
  246. "I can't smell in my dreams, so I don't know if it's blood or not. It looks like it, but... I'm not sure."
  247. >She shakes her head and looks at you.
  248. >"No... It's blood alright."
  249. >You feel your jaw drop and your eyes widen as Midnight gets up from the table.
  250. >She drops a small pouch of bits on the main bar counter in front of a bartender.
  251. >He nods as she leaves.
  252. >Was she having the same nightmares?
  253. >She had to have been to know that was blood.
  254. >You shudder at the thought of another p0ny suffering through what you saw.
  255. >That was something you would never wish upon anyp0ny.
  256. >Not even your rival.
