  1. >That massage definitely loosened you up.
  2. >Somehow, it made you feel much more confident.
  3. >You had this date in the bag!
  4. >You strut through town feeling fresh, like the main character of your favorite television show: Fresh Prince of Bel-Mare.
  5. >Nothing's going to break your stride today.
  6. >Except, maybe, tripping in the middle of the town square.
  7. >A white hoof extends itself in front of your face as you groan.
  8. >The hoof helps you stand.
  9. >You look down and start brushing yourself off.
  10. "Thanks."
  11. >"No problem, Aux."
  12. >Ah, a feminine voice.
  13. >Maybe you could put your moves on such a kind mare.
  14. >You look up, ready to speak, but immediately choke on your words.
  15. >You really should have recognized her from her hoof alone.
  16. >She was the only white bat p0ny you've ever seen, and most likely the only one in town.
  17. "F-Florence?! What are you doing here?"
  18. >You were so busted.
  19. >She was probably going to reprimand you for not showing up to the patrol.
  20. >"Midnight told me you weren't at the patrol today."
  21. >You swallow and start sweating.
  22. "I-I was getting ready f-for a date."
  23. >She smiles and nods as she pats you on the shoulder.
  24. >"Well, good for you. At least somep0ny likes you."
  25. "What do you mean, Florence? P0nies like you."
  26. >She sighs and trots over to the fountain, slumping against it and plucking a mango from her bag.
  27. >"I'm not too sure about that. I'm different from everyp0ny else."
  28. >You trot over and sit beside her.
  29. "Hey, come on Florence. You're one of the best p0nies I know."
  30. >She sniffs a little bit and takes a large bite out of the mango.
  31. >"Thanks, Aux... Oh, by the way."
  32. >She looks up at you.
  33. >"Tomorrow's our last shift, so. Make sure you're there."
  34. >You nod in acknowledgement.
  35. "Alright. So, hey. Are you doing anything later tonight? We could-"
  36. >She starts laughing and shoves a hoof into your shoulder, knocking you down.
  37. >"Oh, please. Didn't you just say you were getting ready for a date?"
  38. >You chuckle softly as you sit up.
  39. "I suppose I did. But it doesn't hurt to have a plan B, does it?"
  40. >"I supposed it doesn't, but let's face it Aux. I'm not in any position to be your plan B."
  41. >You shrug.
  42. "Alright. I'll catch you later, then. I'd rather not be late for my date."
  43. >She nods as you start to trot away.
  44. >It makes you feel bad, but Echo was probably already waiting for you.
  45. >Florence was an excellent p0ny.
  46. >She was talented, beautiful, funny.
  47. >She was a joy to be around.
  48. >Maybe if Echo failed, you could try for Florence.
  49. >Your squad captain?
  50. >Hah, that's a good one Aux.
  51.
  52. >You chuckle to yourself as you walk towards the north-east end of town.
  53. >She seemed kind of sad when you were talking to her though.
  54. >Maybe you could convince her to go get some ice cream after your date with Echo.
  55. >Ice cream cheers everyp0ny up!
  56. >You smile and start to canter through town.
  57. >Aux, you're a genius.
  58. >You close your eyes as you bask in your brilliant idea, which causes you to bump into and subsequently trip over a mare.
  59. >"Hey! Watch where you're... going?"
  60. >Her words are a bit slurred, but you understand what she's saying.
  61. "I-I'm sorry, I wasn't watching where I was... going?"
  62. >You look up at her and shake your head.
  63. "Moonshine?"
  64. >Her friends helps her up and sighs.
  65. >"Hey, Aux."
  66. "Um, hey Lullaby. What are you two doing out and about?"
  67. >She shrugs lazily.
  68. >"Dropping Echo off at some restaurant. She said she had a date with someone, but I fell asleep."
  69. >Moonshine slumps against Lullaby and stares at you.
  70. >"She shed she had a date with... with you, Auksh."
  71. >Lullaby's eyes widen.
  72. >"Oooh, that's right! She's waiting for you! Want us to take you there?"
  73. >You shake your head and laugh nervously.
  74. "No, I think I can manage on my own."
  75. >Lullaby nods and starts to leave, but Moonshine topples over in front of you as she tries to speak.
  76. >"Y'know, I'm... I'm a little jealoush of her. She getsh all the cute guysh."
  77. >You back up a little and blush.
  78. "I-I have to go. I'll see you guys later."
  79. >You skid to a halt just as soon as you start running off.
  80. "Oh! I almost forgot, tomorrow's our last day of patrol!"
  81. >Lullaby nods and waves to you as she starts dragging Moonshine away.
  82. >You wave back and trot off.
  83.
  84. >The moon hangs in the middle of the sky, directly over the town.
  85. >You admire it for a bit as you stand outside of the fruit bar.
  86. >A smile plasters to your lips as you head inside.
  87. >It was a quaint little place, hustling and bustling with a few dozen bat p0nies.
  88. >One in particular catches your eye.
  89. >Her dark, two-toned mane, and those large orange eyes make you smile even wider than you already were.
  90. >You trot across the restaurant, nimbly dodging a few waiters as you approach Echo and your table.
  91. "Hey there, gorgeous."
  92. >She raises her brow and looks through you, shaking her head.
  93. "Echo. It's me, Aux. I'm here for our date?"
  94. >She shakes her head quickly and sighs.
  95. >"Sorry, Aux. I was... thinking about something."
  96. "No, no. It's alright. It's my fault for being so late."
  97. >She looks up behind you.
  98. >"Aux, you're like two minutes late."
  99. "Oh."
  100. >She taps on the table and whistles softly.
  101. >"So..."
  102. "So."
  103. >You look down at a small menu and sigh.
  104. >"How was your day off? I noticed you weren't on patrol today."
  105. >Your face warms up as you blush.
  106. "Sorry, Echo. I just needed to... get ready for this date."
  107. >She hums and nods as she picks her menu up.
  108. >"Well, Aux. You look good."
  109. >You fumble with your menu as you pick it up.
  110. >It slips from your hooves with enough force to knock the table's centerpiece over.
  111. >Flowers and water spill from it.
  112. >They roll over the edge and onto the floor.
  113. >Echo just rolls her eyes and shakes her head.
  114. >"At least this isn't one of those fancy Canterlot restaurants."
  115. >You laugh awkwardly as you try to absorb the mess with a hoof-ful of napkins.
  116. >A bat p0ny with black hair and green eyes looks up at you as you clean your mess.
  117. >"Sir, you don't have to do that. We have employees that clean messes.
  118. "O-oh. Sorry."
  119. >She rolls her eyes and sighs.
  120. >"My name is Jasmine. I'll be your waitress. Are you ready to order?"
  121. >Echo nods.
  122. >"Yes, I'll have a fruit platter and... a glass of blood orange juice."
  123. >The waitress nods and looks to you.
  124. >"And for you, sir?"
  125. "I-I'll have the same thing, b-but for dessert."
  126. >She raises a brow.
  127. >"Sir I ca-"
  128. "For dessert, I'd like you."
  129. >oh, wow.
  130. >Did you really just say that?
  131. >Echo's head hits the table as she starts laughing.
  132. >The waitress just adopts a very uncomfortable look and backs away.
  133. >"I'll be right out with your orders."
  134.
  135. >"Keekee! I can't believe you, Aux! We're here, on a date, and you're still flirting with other p0nies!"
  136. >You rub your arm with a hoof and blush.
  137. "Sorry, I don't... I don't know where that came from."
  138. >Her laughter dies completely as she waves a hoof at you.
  139. >"No, don't worry about it. That's why we're here, right? To help you stop doing that kind of thing?"
  140. >What?
  141. >You thought you were here on an actual date, not to try and help you stop flirting with other p0nies.
  142. "N-no, Echo. This was supposed to be an actual date!"
  143. >She blinks once before slamming her face back into the table.
  144. >Her laughter echoes through the building, which causes other p0nies to stare.
  145. >You blush and reach over to her.
  146. >She holds a hoof up to you.
  147. >"N-no. Don't say anything Aux. My sides are killing me."
  148. >You feel a tugging deep in your chest, but it isn't unfamiliar.
  149. >Disgusted with yourself, you drop about forty bits on the table, get up, and leave.
  150. >It's not like she'd pay for it anyway.
  151. >Besides, you had other p0nies you'd rather spent time with.
  152. >Her laughter echoes through your ears and your mind as you step outside of the restaurant.
  153. >That ice cream was starting to sound good.
  154. >You start heading back to the town square, hoping Florence would still be there.
  155. >You close your eyes and trot with your head lowered.
  156. >How unlucky could one p0ny be?
  157. >Your question was quickly answered as you tripped over a small p0ny pile.
  158. >Not even fifty wing-lengths away from the restaurant, and you managed to trip over Moonshine and Lullaby.
  159. >You couldn't have been in there for more than twenty minutes, and these two barely managed to move anywhere.
  160. >"Oh, hey Aux."
  161. >Lullaby yawns as she greets you.
  162. "Hello Lullaby. What're you doing?"
  163. >"I was taking a nap. Trying to drag Moonshine was a lot of work, and it tired me out pretty quickly."
  164. >Moonshine snores and blows into your tail as she exhales.
  165. >You roll off of them and brush yourself off.
  166. "You two shouldn't be sleeping in the middle of the road. It's dangerous."
  167. >Lullaby shrugs and stands up.
  168. >"I know, I know. Can you help me move her?"
  169. >A hoof meets your forehead as you sigh.
  170. "Fine."
  171.
  172. >You and Lullaby, after some abundant amount of minutes, finally get Moonshine on your back.
  173. >And you now carry her through town.
  174. "So I was thinking about getting some ice cream with Florence, if you and Moonshine wanted to join?"
  175. >Lullaby hums and taps her chin.
  176. >"Sure. I don't have anything else planned for today, except maybe some naps."
  177. >Moonshine taps a hoof on your side.
  178. >"I'd... alsho like shome ice cream."
  179. >She smiles at you, but you just roll your eyes.
  180. "Whatever, let's try to find Florence."
  181. >Moonshine repositions herself on your back so that her front legs wrap around your neck while her back legs straddle you.
  182. >You grumble as you walk into the town square.
  183. >Florence sits by the fountain, staring at you as you walk.
  184. >"Well. Looks like you found somep0ny of your own."
  185. >You blush and look away.
  186. "No! She only does this when she's drunk. Besides, there's no way she'd ever be interested in me."
  187. >Florence chuckles.
  188. >"And you think half of the mares you hit on will be? Aux, please. Just open your eyes."
  189. >You sigh.
  190. "That isn't necessary. Do you want to go get ice cream with us?"
  191. >She shrugs and looks up at the moon.
  192. >"I suppose I wouldn't mind that. It's better than sitting out here thinking."
  193. >Lullaby slowly claps her hooves together.
  194. >"Let's go then!"
  195. >Moonshine snores into your ear as the other two follow you north-west of the square.
  196. >Florence was wrong, Moonshine would never want to be with you.
  197. >You were pretty sure she was into mares anyway.
  198. >That was one of the reasons why you never hit on her, or tried anything.
  199. >There was also the time you two first met, when she acted like a huge jerk to you.
  200.
  201. >You had asked her if she wanted to go watch the sun rise.
  202. >All she said was "No, why would I want to do something like that with someone like you?!"
  203. >She tripped over her words a little bit and blushed.
  204. >You didn't think anything of that, like maybe it was just how she acted when meeting new people.
  205. >Except, she still acted that way around you, unless she was drunk.
  206. >You look over to Florence, who currently looks quite grumpy.
  207. >That could be attributed to one purple maned, sleepy p0ny climbing onto her back.
  208. >Lullaby quickly nods off as she wraps herself around Florence.
  209. >You chuckle, causing her to reply with a swift hoof to your side.
  210. >You grunt and nearly tip over from Moonshine's weight.
  211. "What was that for?!"
  212. >"For laughing at me."
  213. "What, why? That was cute."
  214. >She shakes her head and trots a little ways ahead of you.
  215. >Her flank sways to and fro.
  216. >You bite your bottom lip as you stare.
  217. >That flank.
  218. >That flank could kill lesser p0nies.
  219. >The nasty, vile, dirty things you would do to that flank.
  220. >"Aux!"
  221. "Huh? What?!"
  222. >"We're here."
  223. >Florence points to your left as she glares at you.
  224. >Oh, right.
  225. >The ice cream parlor.
  226. >"Did you have something on your mind?"
  227. >You quickly shake your head.
  228. "Uh, no. Not at all."
  229. >She rolls her eyes and trots into the parlor.
  230. >You follow behind her, trying not to stare at her flank this time.
  231. >Lullaby yawns and wakes up as Florence approaches the counter.
  232. >"Are we here already? I wanted to sleep a little longer."
  233. >You roll your eyes as you tap a hoof against Moonshine's head.
  234. "Wake up, we're here."
  235. >She buries her face in your neck and grumbles.
  236. >"Five more minutes, please?"
  237. >Florence trots over to you and pushes Moonshine off your back.
  238. >That was definitely one way to wake up a sleeping horse.
  239. >Moonshine gets up and staggers a little as she leans against you.
  240. >"W-What was that for?!"
  241. >"Ice cream."
  242. >Her face lights up as she darts over to the counter.
  243. >She starts bouncing up and down like a little school filly.
  244. >"I want the uh..."
  245. >She looks down at Lullaby."
  246. >"What do I want?"
  247. >Lullaby lazily points at a picture of a gallon of pineapple mango sherbet.
  248. >"You want that, Moonshine."
  249.
  250. >The stallion from the counter carries a tray with four bowls of ice cream to your table.
  251. >He sets it down in the middle of the table.
  252. >Everyp0ny grabs their own bowl and shoves their face into the cold ice cream.
  253. >It's not like any of you had magic or could be bothered to use spoons.
  254. >Besides, bat p0nies weren't exactly known for their table manners.
  255. >A loud snort sounds from your left, along with a scraping of glass against wood.
  256. >You look over to find Lullaby asleep, face first in her ice cream.
  257. >Florence tries to pull the bowl away from her.
  258. >Her eyes meet yours as you stare at her.
  259. >"What?"
  260. "Why are you taking her ice cream?"
  261. >"She's asleep. How is she going to eat it if she's sleeping?"
  262. >She has a point.
  263. "That's still kind of rude."
  264. >She shrugs and continues pulling on the bowl.
  265. >Lullaby hugs it to her face, smearing the dairy goodness into her fur.
  266. >Florence lets go and huffs.
  267. "You know you can just go buy more, right?"
  268. >She taps her hooves together and blushes.
  269. >Moonshine reaches across the table and taps you on the shoulder.
  270. >"Aux. Look."
  271. >You look at her, only to find that she's stuck her bowl to the top of her head.
  272. "Take that off, Moonshine. You're drunk, and it isn't funny."
  273. >She frowns and looks to the floor as she removes the bowl and sets it back on the table.
  274. >Melted ice cream drips down her mane and over her face as tears start to form in her eyes.
  275. >"Sorry, Aux."
  276. >Her words weren't slurred anymore.
  277. >Good, she was sobering up.
  278. >She shakes her head and gets up from the table.
  279. >"I'll see you at the patrol tomorrow."
  280. >She sniffles softly and runs out of the parlor.
  281. >Florence glares at you.
  282. >"Aux!"
  283. "What?"
  284. >She gestures to the door.
  285. >"What was that?"
  286. >You throw your hooves up.
  287. "I don't know!"
  288. >"Aux."
  289. >You turn to Lullaby.
  290. "WHAT!"
  291. >She places a hoof on your shoulder.
  292. >"Go apologize."
  293. >You place your hooves on your cheeks and lean onto the table.
  294. "Apologize for what? I didn't do anything."
  295. >Florence throws her bowl at you.
  296. >"Didn't do anything? Aux, you just made her run out of here crying. You know why you can't get anyp0ny to like you?"
  297. >She crawls across the table and starts jabbing her hoof into your chest.
  298. >"It's because you ignore everyp0ny's feelings and hit on every mare in sight. Yet, when one mare actually gives you the attention you so crave, you shun her."
  299. >They can't...
  300.
  301. >Do they mean Echo?
  302. >Moonshine and Lullaby had to have been spying on you at the restaurant.
  303. >You slam your hooves on the table, which causes you to launch your bowl into Florence's face.
  304. >You hop up from the table and rush out of the parlor.
  305. >The door slams into a stallion as you run out.
  306. "Sorry!"
  307. >You continue running through the streets and out into the town square.
  308. >Your heart races and your breathing becomes quick and shallow as you find Echo sitting by the fountain.
  309. >What do you say?
  310. "I'm sorry I hit on that waitress?"
  311. >No, that wouldn't do.
  312. "I'm sorry that I'm such a screw up and that I didn't consider your feelings and-"
  313. >She's staring at you.
  314. >Did she hear you talking to yourself?
  315. >You shake your head and blush.
  316. >Might as well get it over with.
  317. >You trot over to her and sit beside her.
  318. "H-hey Echo. What's-"
  319. >She places a hoof over your mouth.
  320. >"Aux, no. Don't say anything."
  321. >You speak into her hoof anyway.
  322. "I just wanted to say I was so-"
  323. >"I heard you already. You aren't the quietest or subtlest p0ny around. It's alright, Aux. I... I guess I reacted poorly to the situation too."
  324. >She takes her hoof away and smiles.
  325. >"You just kind of... caught me off guard. I should have expected you'd take the date seriously, but I guess I didn't make it clear that I was trying to help you."
  326. >You sigh and look away.
  327. "No, it was all my fault. I shouldn't have hit on that waitress. If you'd give me another chance, Echo, I can show you that I can be one hundred percent loyal."
  328. >She snickers, covering her mouth with her hooves.
  329. >"Aux, please, no. It's nothing against you, I'm just not interested."
  330. >You nod slowly and start to walk away from her.
  331. >Might as well go home and rest up for tomorrow's patrol, right?
  332. >"I'll see you tomorrow?"
  333. "Yeah."
  334. >That was it, there was nothing left in this town for you.
  335. >Echo didn't like you, Midnight hated you, Florence was too good for you, Lullaby was almost always asleep, and Moonshine...
  336. >Moonshine hated you from day one.
  337. >You didn't bother with her after the first time.
  338.
  339. >None of it was worth it.
  340. >None of the suffering, the rejection, the heart break.
  341. >Tomorrow after the patrol, you were going to leave.
  342. >It would probably be a good idea to inform them.
  343. >But they wouldn't care.
  344. >None of them cared.
  345. >Eventually coming upon the front door of your house, you unlock it and rush inside.
  346. >You rush to your bedroom as you finally feel the weight of rejection falling onto your back.
  347. >A lump forms in your throat as you roll onto your bed and pull the covers over you.
  348. >Your forelegs wrap around one of your pillows.
  349. >Its plush form molds around your face.
  350. >Tears soak the pillow as you rub your face into the soft cloth.
  351. >Life could be worse.
  352. >You could have a gimp wing, or some broken ribs.
  353. >Or you could be dead.
  354. >Yeah, that was pretty bad.
  355. >But still, life was pretty bad right now.
  356. >You were all alone, aside from a few friends.
  357. >None of them really liked you though.
  358. >Something crawls onto your bed, causing you to pull your face out of the pillow.
  359. >You find that you can't move outside of that.
  360. >"Hello, Aux."
  361. >A female voice?
  362. >Maybe this was your chance.
  363. >Now, if only you could move to see her.
  364. >Your bed sinks into itself as she moves closer to you.
  365. "H-Hello?"
  366. >"Shhh. Just lie still, dear Aux. I know exactly what you want."
  367. >Her voice felt sharp against your ears.
  368. "Y-you do?"
  369. >"Oh, yes. You want a nice mare to settle down with, and to hold you and be yours forever."
  370. "Well, if you're offering then I-"
  371.
  372. >She loomed over you enough that you could see her out of the corner of your eye.
  373. >Those blood stained teeth and wide, crazed eyes caused your mind to shut down.
  374. >Your heart raced and pounded in your chest.
  375. >Your stomach did flips and twists and made you feel absolutely sick.
  376. >She looked just like any normal bat p0ny, except she seemed out of place and warped.
  377. >Taking this opportunity to look around your room, you notice that your wall-hangings were warped and seemed to melt from the walls.
  378. >What was going on?
  379. >"Well, Aux. I'll tell you what. If you do me one little favor, I'll be your special somep0ny."
  380. >You swallow hard.
  381. "N-no, that's okay. I'm fine with being lonely."
  382. >"I think you're lying to me, Aux. You shouldn't lie to someone who cares about you!"
  383. >You close your eyes and try to shove your face back into your pillow.
  384. >She slaps it away from you and it crashes against the wall.
  385. >A whimper escapes your throat.
  386. >"Now, now, Aux. It's not polite to ignore somep0ny that likes you!"
  387. >She leans into your ear as she says this and starts cackling.
  388. >"Come on, Aux. This is the chance of a lifetime! Somep0ny finally has interest in you, and all you can do is cry and hide!"
  389. >Her laughs tear at your heart.
  390. >It's just like with Echo.
  391. >A warm, wet tongue presses against your ear as she straddles your body.
  392. "P-Please stop."
  393. >She snickers as she retracts her tongue.
  394. >"Why? Isn't this what you've always wanted?"
  395. "N-no. Please s-stop..."
  396. >Her tongue traces over your ear, her saliva dripping into your ear canal.
  397. >Oh Luna, make it stop.
  398. >That wet and warm appendage slithers into your ear.
  399. >You start screeching at how uncomfortable it is.
  400.
  401. >A hoof starts shaking you as your ear throbs.
  402. >Oddly enough, you don't feel anything in your ear.
  403. >That doesn't mean you're about to open your eyes and look at whoever's shaking you.
  404. >"Aux! Wake up!"
  405. >That voice...
  406. "M-Moonshine?"
  407. >A sigh of relief escapes her lips as she pats you on the shoulder.
  408. >"Oh, thank Luna. I heard screeching coming from your house, I thought you were in trouble."
  409. "I had a nightmare..."
  410. >She snickers softly and strokes your arm.
  411. >You shudder and pull away from her, facing away as you sit up.
  412. >"I kind of gathered that when I found you screeching in your sleep."
  413. >You nod slowly and rub your arm with a hoof.
  414. "Th-thanks, Moonshine."
  415. >She clears her throat as you turn to her.
  416. >A blush tints her cheeks a bright rosy red.
  417. >"Would you like me to spend the day over here? To make sure you don't have any more nightmares?"
  418. >You raise an eyebrow.
  419. >Why was she being nice to you?
  420. >You already knew how much she and the others disliked you.
  421. "No. No, I don't think that would be necessary.
  422. >Her brow furrows as she scoffs and huffs.
  423. >"Fine, it's not like I wanted to stay here and keep you company anyway!"
  424. >Before you can say anything, she leaps off the bed and runs out the door.
  425. >Good going, Aux.
  426. >If she didn't hate you before, which she did, then she definitely hated you now.
  427. >You whine to yourself as the front door slams.
  428. "I really am all alone in the world."
  429. >One look out the window reveals the sun start to paint the sky blue.
  430. "How long was I out for?"
  431. >You yawn and slump back under your covers.
  432. >Might as well get some more sleep, since this was your last day in Hollow Shades.
  433. >Hopefully no more nightmares would plague you.
