  1. >When you stopped by Twilight's library today, you found Spike waiting for you outside, scroll in hand
  2. >You gave him a fistbump and a couple bits as thanks for dealing with being a glorified mailbox
  3. >You sat on a nearby bench outside the library as Spike walked back inside, probably to clean up after Twilight, again
  4. >The seal on the scroll bore the unmistakable symbol of Princess Celestia's cutie mark
  5. >You broke the seal and gave it a read
  6. >Apparently, Princess Celestia had taken your request to heart
  7. >She was going to visit you today, and this letter was your heads-up
  8. >You exhale a breath you didn't realize you were holding in
  9. >Guess you got some planning to do
  10. >You figure a salad would probably be alright for dinner
  11. >Maybe boil or scramble some eggs
  12. >You could bake an apple pie for dessert, even
  13. >It's a damn shame it's so tough to get other fruits in Ponyville
  14. >The Apple Family doesn't exactly deal with fruit-based competition well
  15.
  16. >After about an hour of running the fuck around the Ponyville marketplace, you're finally done
  17. >You've gathered all the ingredients you need to make a pretty fuckin' awesome dinner
  18. >Okay, so it's probably not going to be as good as the shit the palace chefs come up with, but you don't care
  19. >And the best part was when you hit the fruit section
  20. >You bought your Apple Family Apples, yeah, that was a given
  21. >But you managed to make a stealth purchase without catching Applejack's attention
  22. >A smile on your face, you checked your precious cargo once more
  23. >Motherfucking strawberries! You fucking love strawberries!
  24. >How goddamn long has it been since you had some good strawberries?!
  25. >Finding these, and at a decent price, it was like you won the fucking jackpot
  26. >Had to get these fuckers home pronto, if Applejack saw you with them...
  27. >You shivered a bit, and picked up your pace
  28.
  29. >You heaved a relief-filled sigh
  30. >You made it home without running into any Apple family members
  31. >Your precious strawberries were safe!
  32. >Oh, and all the other shit you bought, too
  33. >Speaking of which, the Princess is supposed to be here in a few hours
  34. >Time to get dinner ready
  35. >The salad was easy enough that you could wait a while longer
  36. >Same deal for the eggs, really
  37. >So you decided to get to work right on that apple pie
  38. >Good thing a few of those odd jobs you did put you in Sugarcube corner
  39. >Even if they weren't directly helping with cooking, you still learned quite a bit
  40. >That knowledge proved to be useful in constructing the apple pie to rule them all
  41. >This steaming behemoth of deliciousness would launch a vicious assault on the Princess' tastebuds
  42. >There would be no survivors
  43.
  44. >Right, that's the pie taken care of
  45. >The salad and eggs followed shortly thereafter
  46. >You decided to just hard-boil the eggs
  47. >That way, they'd be great just on their own, or as part of the salad
  48. >Which also happens to be done, and none too soon
  49. >There's a knock at your door
  50. >You answer it to find Princess Celestia standing there, though she looks a bit nervous
  51. "Hello, good to see you, Princess. Please, come in."
  52. >"Thank you, Anonymous. It's good to see you, too."
  53. >She smiles, a bit awkwardly
  54. >She makes her way inside, and you check the porch
  55. >...No guards this time
  56. >You briefly wonder how she managed to pull that off
  57. >You shrug
  58.
  59. "So, Princess, are you hungry? I hope you don't mind that what I've got isn't too fancy."
  60. >You head toward the table
  61. >"Anonymous, do you think..."
  62. "Hmm?"
  63. >"Could we... perhaps... drop the formality tonight? Just call me Celestia?"
  64. "Uh... sure. I think I can do that, Celestia."
  65. >She smiles
  66. >"Thank you, Anonymous."
  67. >She takes a spot at the table, you take your seat
  68. >Dinner goes by, uneventfully
  69. >You wind up giving her your friendship report and crack a few jokes
  70. >She actually laughs at some of them
  71. >It's pretty nice, really; seeing her relaxing like this
  72. >You get the feeling she doesn't have much time to relax from day to day
  73.
  74. >Before long, it's time to bring out that pie
  75. >You bring it to the table for her to get an eyeful
  76. >"Oh? I didn't know you were a baker, Anonymous."
  77. >You start slicing it up
  78. "It's not exactly my day job, but I guess I picked up enough to bake once in a while."
  79. >"Well, I'm sure it will be wonderful. If I may... what flavor is it?"
  80. "Apple, of course. It's not too easy to find much else, here in Ponyville."
  81. >You offer her a slice of the pie, which she levitates to herself
  82. "Would you believe how hard it is to find strawberries here? It's nearly impossible!"
  83. >Her eyes go wide at the mention of "strawberries"
  84. >But... she's not saying anything
  85. "What, is there something wrong with strawberries, Celestia?"
  86. >"Huh? Oh- oh, no. Nothing's wrong. It's just that, well..."
  87. >She glances to the side
  88. "Well?"
  89.
  90. >"Promise you won't tell anypony, Anonymous?"
  91. "Uh, okay. Cross my heart, hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye."
  92. >You jab yourself in the eye that time
  93. "Gah!"
  94. >Celestia laughs at your misfortune before clearing her throat
  95. >"Well... strawberries are my favorite fruit. Not many ponies know that."
  96. >She starts eating her slice of pie
  97. "Heh. You've got good taste. Strawberries are my favorite, too."
  98. >She nearly chokes on her latest bite
  99. >"What- really?"
  100. >You nod, digging into your slice of pie, as well
  101. >"You are just full of surprises, Anonymous..."
  102. >The two of you finish dessert in relative silence
  103.
  104. >"Anonymous, I was wondering..."
  105. >[Yes! Go on, ask him!]
  106. >[...Why aren't you asking him?]
  107. >[What's wrong with you?]
  108. "Yeah, Celestia?"
  109. >[You can pass it off as idle curiosity!]
  110. "Celestia?"
  111. >"Uh- um- I mean, yes, Anonymous?"
  112. "Are you alright? You were starting to ask me something and then you just kinda... stopped."
  113. >"O-oh. Ah, yes. Well..."
  114. >[You are squandering your chance, Celestia!]
  115. >[Stop being so afraid and JUST. ASK. HIM.]
  116. >Celestia swallowed the lump in her throat
  117. >"Anonymous, do you have a special somepony?"
  118.
  119. >You stare blankly at Celestia for a second before the question really registers in your head
  120. >"Anonymous?"
  121. "Uh, n-no. No, I don't. Why do you ask?"
  122. >It was Celestia's turn to fumble verbally
  123. >"Ah, oh, I-I was merely curious, as- um, as Hearts and Hooves Day is coming up in a few days."
  124. >You nod
  125. "Yeah, I remember. Probably not going to do anything for it. I don't really have anyone I've got my eye on."
  126. >Celestia gasps
  127. >"Really? Nopony? I was certain-"
  128. >She stops mid-sentence
  129. >"Anonymous, I... I'd like to know something else. A few weeks back, at your last report... that song you sang, and..."
  130. >She glances downward
  131. >"...That, that kiss you gave me. Why?"
  132.
  133. "Oh... right, about that."
  134. >You rubbed the back of your neck
  135. "That, uh... that was..."
  136. >"It was... what?"
  137. >Oh damn
  138. >You don't really want to say it
  139. >But you have to tell her
  140. >You sigh
  141. "It was just a bet."
  142. >"A what?"
  143. "A bet. Rainbow Dash bet me I wouldn't do it."
  144. >"I... see..."
  145. >Princess Celestia stands up and walks over to the door, slowly, her head hanging
  146. >"Thank you for a lovely evening, Anonymous. I must be going."
  147. >Before you could say anything else, she had already closed the door and left
  148. >You know you really fucked up.
  149.
  150. >When Celestia arrived at the palace, Luna was there to greet her.
  151. >Luna could tell something was wrong, but any question she asked was answered with silence.
  152. >Celestia lowered the sun and retired to her chambers.
  153. >[Why do you even try anymore, Celestia?]
  154. >[How many thousands of years has it been, now?]
  155. >[You've been alone for so long, maybe it's your destiny.]
  156. >"It was foolish to think that he might..."
  157. >[He's just a friend.]
  158. >[Nothing more.]
  159. >[At least you don't have to regret not asking.]
  160. >"Even if it would have been better, had I never asked at all."
  161. >Celestia's vision blurred with tears.
  162. >She closed her eyes and tried to sleep.
