  1. >Nothingness.
  2. >You open your eyes.
  3. >At least, you think you do.
  4. >You float aimlessly in a dark void.
  5. >Your body feels no sensation.
  6. >Pulled in no specific direction, you drift limply in the darkness.
  7. >But...
  8. >You're not afraid.
  9. >A distant heartbeat pulses close to yours.
  10. >And serenity fills your very being.
  11. >Something warm and familiar coddles you.
  12. >Worry is far from your mind as you bathe in the calm aura.
  13. >The inky darkness begins to part, as a sliver of light presents itself to you.
  14. >You feel yourself gently pushed towards it as the world around you begins to materialize.
  15. >Colors turn to shapes as you feel the mattress below you once again.
  16. >A blanket wraps itself around you tightly as the clinic reveals itself to you.
  17. >Finally, the warm aura manifests itself as your savior.
  18. >Nurse Soma held you tight against her body as she slumbered.
  19. >Your head rested against her neck as she sandwiched you between her legs.
  20. >Her heartbeat calm as you found your ear against her.
  21. >She gripped you a bit harder for a moment, your pelvis sinking into her plush tummy.
  22. >You feel your cheeks redden at this as you find your voice.
  23. “Ummm... Soma?”
  24. >She mutters something unintelligible before positioning herself over you.
  25. >The weight of her body, while heavy, is not uncomfortable.
  26. >Half of you sink into the mattress while the other half into the sleeping nurse.
  27. >Her pliable bones easily make room for you to sink further into her plush middle.
  28. >You start to tap her on the side with your free hand.
  29. >Mumbling into her neck, you make another attempt to wake her.
  30. “Nurse Soma... its morning now...”
  31. >You look up a bit to see her eyes flutter awake.
  32. >”Oh... oh!  Excuse me, good morning Anon!”
  33. >She lazily gets on all fours to walk off the bedding, leaving you with the covers.
  34. >Effortlessly, you sit up and cross your legs as you watch Soma.
  35. >With a glow of her horn, she ties her mane into a pony tail with a matching pink ribbon.
  36. >She smooths out the rest of her coat with a fore hoof, looking as clean as ever.
  37. >You never noticed any unpleasant odor from her, so grooming seems to be very simple for her.
  38. >She turns to you with a cheery look on her face.
  39. >”So, how's my patient this morning?  No more pain I assume?”
  40. >You look blankly at her.
  41. >Remembering how much pain you were in yesterday, you nod in disbelief.
  42. “Yeah, I actually feel amazing today, thank you.”
  43. >”It's no problem really, nothing a little magic can't do.”
  44. >She taps her horn for emphasis before turning her back to you.
  45. >”Now, I have to report back to my main camp, so I have to get going soon.”
  46. >You hop off the mattress, grabbing your backpack and taking stock of what remains.
  47. >A bag of prune hiding behind two water bottles.
  48. >Better than nothing.
  49. “So, when are we leaving?”
  50. >Soma turns her head to you with a raised eyebrow.
  51. >”...we?”
  52. “Yeah... something wrong with that?”
  53. >Her face contorts in confusion as she turns to you.
  54. >”Well... aren't you afraid of me?”
  55. >You maintain your blank expression.
  56. “Why would I be afraid?”
  57. >”Well... I am part of an invasion race that just devoured your own kind in front of you.”
  58. “...which saved my life as a result?”
  59. >She rubs her cheek in thought.
  60. “Not to mention help me get better over the course of two days.”
  61. >”Well, I had to revitalize myself too, taking care of a creature your size is no problem for me.”
  62. >Her hoof draws an invisible circle on the ground.
  63. >”...and the company is always nice.”
  64. >She stares at your bag as you put it over your back.
  65. >”Don't you have a group of humans waiting for you?”
  66. >Her words sting a bit as you remember your empty home.
  67. >No friends responded to your calls, no family to run to.
  68. >You were alone.
  69. >You bat a tear away as you look into her eyes.
  70. ”No... not anymore at least.”
  71. >”Oh... I'm sorry.”
  72. “It's alright.  But yesterday, you did promise me that I'll never be alone anymore.”
  73. >She cringes at the memory.
  74. “Please, you said that you take care of both ponies and humans, why can't I go with you?”
  75. >”Well... I'm not going to stop you, but it is about a 3 day walk to the camp.”
  76. >Your face lights up in a flash.
  77. “Distance is no problem for me!”
  78. >”The distance is not my concern for you.”
  79. >She looks at you solemnly.
  80. >You look back curiously as she walks near you.
  81. >Her snout inches away from your face, she takes on a serious tone.
  82. >”We need food for travel.  While there is some food across the street, we'll be mostly scavenging for it in buildings we come across.  And if we don't find any food...”
  83. >Her eyes take on an intimidating shape.
  84. >”I'll end up eating you in a moment of hunger.”
  85. >Your heart sinks at her words.
  86. >You feel a cold sweat flash over you as her face adapts a much more gentle look.
  87. >”I don't want to do that to such a good human.  You saved me and kept me company and I don't want to lose you in a blink of an eye.”
  88. >She exhales as she meets your eyes again.
  89. >”Truth be told, that's why I tied you to the bed yesterday.  To stop myself from any rash decisions.”
  90. >”Are you still okay with following me?”
  91. >You look at her in silence, stunned.
  92. >Her ears fold against her head, as the silence isn't broken.
  93. >You try to make words, but your mouth doesn't move.
  94. >”I... I guess I should get going now.  Be safe.”
  95. >She turns around to walk away.
  96. >The only living being that has shown you compassion.
  97. >About to disappear.
  98. “Wait!”
  99. >Her ears perk up at your voice as she glances at you.
  100. >You secure your bag onto your back as you jog over to her.
  101. >Ramming into her, you wrap your arms around the base of her neck.
  102. >She catches you with her fore leg, surprised by your charge.
  103. >”But...”
  104. “No 'buts,' I'd rather be with you than be by myself again.”
  105. >She chuckles a bit at your words.
  106. >”What's wrong with being by yourself?  You seem so set on being with others.”
  107. >You release her from your hug as you look to the ground for guidance.
  108. “Well... I just don't.  Ever since I woke up by myself, I hated having no one around.”
  109. >Scratching your head in frustration, you look to the confused pony.
  110. “It sounds immature, I know, but in times like this, I really want anyone to be near, especially someone who cares like you.”
  111. >She brings you a bit closer with her leg still around you.
  112. >Placing her head against yours, she closes her eyes.
  113. “Even if you do lose control, I'll at least always have the memory of Soma, the nurse who saved my life.”
  114. >Another blanket of silence falls over both of you.
  115. >The moment is broken by warm tears falling onto your shirt.
  116. >Not your own this time.
  117. >You look up at Soma, who's tears escape the corners of her eyes.
  118. >Her short, shallow breaths shake you with every sharp inhale.
  119. >You stroke the back of her neck to help her calm down.
  120. >”Thank you.”
  121. >She looks up at you with a smile.
  122. >”I didn't really want to journey alone, so you have my word that I'll do my best to control myself.”
  123. “I know you will, you've been doing great so far.”
  124. >She backs up from you to rub the bitter joy from her eyes.
  125. >”We should make a quick stop to the building across the street first, we can have a decent meal before we go.”
  126. >As you begin to walk, she gives you a quick sniff.
  127. >”...and you should probably take a bath there too.  Whatever you humans put in your soap help keep the temptation away even just a little bit.”
  128. >You look to her with an embarrassed smirk.
  129. “Alright, sounds good.”
  130. >The two of you journey to the apartment complex across the street.
  131. >Opening the door for your companion, you enter the building after her.
  132. >”Here, I've stored quite a few provisions in this apartment here, and the utilities still work.”
  133. >She motions you into the closest apartment room.
  134. >You enter to see a perfectly clean room, untouched by the chaos outside.
  135. >Ticking clocks, clean furniture, even a functioning aquarium.
  136. “Huh, if I didn't know any better, I would think someone lived here.”
  137. >Soma closes the door to the apartment behind her before heading to the tiny kitchen.
  138. >”Well... you wouldn't be wrong, a patient from the clinic used to live here.  Bathroom's to your left.”
  139. >You put down your bag as you take off one of the two shirts you wear.
  140. “Did you know her?”
  141. >As the nurse starts to fry some eggs, she stands unnaturally still for a moment.
  142. >”...yes.  We were close friends.  Recent events cause us to become... well, closer friends than I would've liked.”
  143. >You picked up on her words and start formulating an apology.
  144. >Time seems to flow erratically as you watch her cook.
  145. >She sighs as she expertly piles the cooked food onto a large platter with her magic.
  146. >”The war made it so that she couldn't get her medicine for her illness, and our magic couldn't save  her.”
  147. >The refrigerator whips open with a glow as more ingredients float above Soma.
  148. >”Her last request was that she would like to be with her nurse in her final hours.”
  149. >A dry laugh comes from her.
  150. >”She even sneaked her hand in my mouth, knowing what would happen.  Quite the persuasive one she was.”
  151. >Soma turns to levitate a full platter of food onto the dining table.
  152. “I'm sorry for bringing this up, you've been quite through a lot, just like us.”
  153. >”It bothers me sometimes, but I like to visit here in memory of her.  The few days we spent were quite peaceful here.”
  154. >She turns to you with a sunny expression.
  155. >”But, I have a camp to get to, and you have a shower to take.  I'll worry about breakfast and rations before we head off.  Just make sure you're presentable!”
  156. >You respond with a smile of your own.
  157. “No problem Nurse Soma, we'll be out on the road in no time!”
