  1. >The swinging doors open as you brush past them.
  2. >The rusty hinges squeal as they come back into place.
  3. >The entire bar looks at you as you take a seat.
  4. >The barkeep trots over to you.
  5. “Whisky.” You croak out, your voice raspy from the mornings drinking.
  6. >You were tipsy already, you could feel it in your veins, but you had a long way to go yet.
  7. >Especially for today.
  8. >You look around the bar, feeling the cold stares of the locals on your back.
  9. >The largest one, a huge brown stallion, stares right back.
  10. >You stare him down, right in the eyes.
  11. >And he goes back to his card game.
  12. >Fucking right he does.
  13. >The barkeep slides you a shot glass, which you quickly down.
  14. >This stuff seemed to have a bit more kick than the stuff in p0nyville.
  15. >They probably needed it around here.
  16. >The train needed to stop and let some other passengers off, so you were stuck here in Appleloosa for two hours.
  17. >You thought you’d hit up the bar, and keep this party of one going.
  18. >The barkeep slides you another drink, evidently trying to milk you for all your worth.
  19. >Slimy bastard.
  20. >You gingerly sip on this one.
  21. >At least it was warmer here in Appleloosa than it was back in p0nyville.
  22. >You don’t really feel it though, what with being half in the bag already.
  23. >You look over on the wall for a clock.
  24. >It’s almost noon.
  25. >Congrats, you are now officially an alcoholic.
  26. >”Y’alright there pard?” a yellow coloured stallion says sitting down next to you.
  27. “Fine.” You rasp at him.
  28. >”You’re the hooman from p0nyville ain’tcha?”
  29. >The fuck does he know that?
  30. “Eeyup.” You say, taking a page from Big Mac’s book.
  31. >”I thought you might be. My cousin Applejack wrote to me aboutcha. She seemed mighty fond of ya. What are you doin all the way out in these parts?”
  32. >Fucking hell. Why can’t these insufferable p0nies just leave you BE?
  33. “Holiday.”
  34. >”Here in Appleloosa? Well, shucks, the names Braeburn, it’s a pleasure to meet ya”
  35. “Not stayin. Passin through.” You say, draining the rest of your glass.
  36. >”Aww well thats a shame. Ain’t it a bit early to be hitten the booze?”
  37. “It’s five o clock somewhere Braeburn. It always is.” You say as the barkeep hands you some more sweet libation.
  38. >”Somethin troubling you partner? You seem like you’ve got the weight of the world on your shoulders.”
  39. “Ya know? There is something wrong. But guess what? I don’t want to talk about it.” You say, raising your voice.
  40. >The music in the bar abruptly stops at your outburst.
  41. “Whatcha’ll stopping for? Don’t mind me.” You say.
  42. >The patrons stare at you.
  43. >If you could give an anymore steel like gaze, you would.
  44. >They back down.
  45. >The music starts again, and chatter resumes.
  46. >”Alright. I get it, just concerned. Got a letter from mah cous, sayin you was going through some hard times is all.”
  47. >You wave over to the barkeep.
  48. “Get this man a drink. On me.”
  49. >He slides over another glass, filled with an amber liquid.
  50. >You pass it to Braeburn.
  51. Raising your glass you say “To what could have been.”
  52. >”To what could have been” he mimics, unsure of your meaning.
  53. >He gingerly sips his drink, while you down the rest of yours.
  54. >You look around the bar.
  55. >There was a p0ny sitting at the piano, playing an upbeat medley.
  56. >It was killing your down mood.
  57. “Brae, you ever done something that you wish you could go back and do differently?”
  58. >You see his pupils shrink.
  59. “Well I do, every day of my god damn life...”
  60. >”That’s pretty morose there son, something must be eaten at ya.”
  61. “And I can tell by your reaction something must be eaten at you too.”
  62. >He lowers his Stetson over his eyes.
  63. >”Yall really know how to kill a mood.” He says
  64. >You pat him hard on the back.
  65. “Well sorry, but you asked. Barkeep, another round of drinks for me and my new friend over here.”
  66. >He trots on over, placing the bottle in front of you.
  67. “Smart man” you say pouring yourself and Braeburn another drink.
  68. “So? What’s eating you?”
  69. >”I thought I asked you first?” he says, draining his drink.
  70. “Yeah, but I aint goin first. I could tell as soon as you sat down next to me, you’ve got some baggage as well.”
  71. >”Baggage?”
  72. “Emotional baggage you dolt.”
  73. >”Oh, well, I don’t know if I want to talk about it.”
  74. “Now you see it from my perspective.”
  75. >He turns to you.
  76. >”Yall some kind of mind reader or trickster?”
  77. “Nope, just your friendly out of town magic man.” You say with a grin.
  78. >He raises one eyebrow.
  79. >”Whatchall mean by that?”
  80. “Watch and see.”
  81. >You spot a guitar over in the corner of the room.
  82. >Standing up, you levitate it over.
  83. >The patrons look at you suspiciously.
  84. >You grab a bar stool and head up on stage.
  85. >Placing the guitar on your lap, you grab Braeburn’s hat with your will.
  86. >It floats over lazily, and lands on your head.
  87. >You strum a few cords with your hand, before letting your magic do its work.
  88. >You don’t even say anything, but let the lyrics do it for you.
  89. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IkvAb6THQY&feature=relmfu
  90. >The crowd sits still, as the music plays, your scratchy voice works well with the lyrics.
  91. >You can see Braeburn watching your every move.
  92. >Even the giant of a stallion in the crowd is watching you now.
  93. >The haunting cords fill the saloon, their sounds filling the dusty air.
  94. >You strum away, oblivious to your surroundings.
  95. >You’re lost in the music, and your memories.
  96. “It’s so far, so far, away.” You sing, as the squeak of the strings fills the voids in the song.
  97. >You continue your melancholy song for a few more minutes.
  98. >You gently place the guitar where it was sitting, and take the stool back.
  99. >You place the hat back on Braeburn’s head.
  100. >”Where in tarnation did ya get that song from?”
  101. “From a man who went through something similar to me.”
  102. >”And that would be?”
  103. “A man who lost everything he once held dear.” You say, sitting back down.
  104. >His mouth hangs agape.
  105. “Heh, don’t worry about me. It was a long time ago.”
  106. “So, like I said. What’s eating you?”
  107.
  108. >An hour later...
  109. “Well, that’s quite the tale.”
  110. >”Yeah, I knew I shouldn’t have left. But I just couldn’t do it at the time ya know?”
  111. >”Worried bout what others may think.” He says, slightly tipsy on his chair.
  112. >You two HAD been hitting the booze kinda hard.
  113. “Hey, don’t be like this stupid ape, YOU ARE YOUNG still. There’s too much life to look ahead to, to dwell on the past like that.”
  114. >Funny.
  115. >If only you could follow your own advice for once.
  116. >”You know what? You’re right.” He says, trying to stand up, but wobbling in place.
  117. “Woah there, easy now.” You say, setting him back on his chair.
  118. “I’ve got many more years under my belt in drunken stupor than you do. Take it easy this afternoon you crazy bastard.”
  119. >”Ya’ll the one with the mental hang ups now buddy!” he slurs.
  120. “You know it. Say hi to Applejack for me.” You say, dropping a fair number of bits on the counter.
  121. >You emerge out into the winter sun.
  122. >It was not too hot here, but the sun was absolutely blinding.
  123. >You shade your eyes, from the fiery globe above you, and make your way back to the train.
  124. >You head over to the first class car, and slide open the door.
  125. >Hopefully you had it to yourself agai-
  126. >Oh fuck.
  127. >Fuck no.
  128. >You nope so hard, you fall down the stairs leading to the train car.
  129. >You break out into a sprint.
  130. >Fucking NO.
  131. >You run, faster than Kenyans.
  132. >You can hear the sounds of wing beats behind you.
  133. >FUCK she was catching up.
  134. >Not today.
  135. >You do a little trick your old buddy taught you in the war.
  136. >Blink.
  137. >You keep running, but every other step; port yourself a little further forward.
  138. >Let the momentum guide you.
  139. >In the blink (sorry) of an eye, you halfway across the dusty town.
  140. >you look back, seeing the flying beast closing in on you.
  141. >NOPE.
  142. >You duck around a corner, and port back to the bar.
  143. >She would catch you soon enough, unless you made it back to the train just as it was leaving.
  144. >The patrons act a bit shocked as you accidently tumble over a table.
  145. “I WAS NEVER HERE.” You say, as you duck through the back.
  146. >Alleyway.
  147. >Empty Barrel.
  148. >Solid snake mode is a go!
  149. >You close the lid tight, your heart feels like it’s about to explode.
  150. >OH PLEASE DO.
  151. >JUST LET THIS DAY END.
  152. >You hear chatter inside the bar, and you try to keep as quiet as possible.
  153. >Please.
  154. >Pls no.
  155. >You hear the back door open.
  156. >”Hey Anon man, she’s gone.” You hear Braeburn call.
  157. “Thanks man, I owe you.” You say popping open the cover of the barrel.
  158. >”Gotcha” you hear a feminine voice say.
  159. “YOU’LL GET YOURS BRAEBURN!” you say, as the lid of the barrel closes again, and is levitated off the ground by the sun princess.
  160. >C:”Your assistance in this matter was most appreciated Braeburn.” Princess Celestia says, her voice a bit muffled by the barrel.
  161. >B:”Was my pleasure Princess, Now you behave yourself in there Anon. Thanks for the chat earlier.”
  162. “YOU ARE DEAD TO ME.” You yell out in response.
  163. >Can’t port from this uncomfortable position.
  164. >You can feel the barrel being moved somewhere, but you’re not sure where.
  165. >A few minutes later, the blinding sunlight fills your eyes, and you’re back in the train.
  166. >Celestia is standing before you.
  167. “You know I can just port out of here right?”
  168. >”Yes, but I am hoping you will not.”
  169. “Why are you following me?”
  170. >”Because I student of mine said you were in trouble.”
  171. >TWILIGHT YOU JUDAS.
  172. “I’m fine. Just need a vacation.”
  173. >”Now Anonymous. I know that is not true.” She says, walking closer to you.
  174. >You take a step backwards, and sit down in one of the seats.
  175. “Fine. You got me. Not talking about it though.”
  176. >”That’s fine. Mind if I sit here?” she says, motioning to the seat across from you.
  177. “You’re the Princess.” You say, as she sits down smiling.
  178. >No one else enters the first class car.
  179. >So it’s just you and her.
  180. >The train whistle sounds, as it begins to roll along the tracks.
  181. >You sit in relative silence, Celestia doing the same.
  182. >She looks out the window while you peruse a magazine.
  183. >There’s an interesting article about wine tasting in Hollywood.
  184. >Something you may have to check out.
  185. >Soon the conductor comes along, and checks your ticket.
  186. >He has quite the startle when he sees the Princess.
  187. >She explains she is simply accompanying a friend, and produces a few bits to cover the trip.
  188. >He refuses payment, saying it’s an honour she’s just riding on the train.
  189. >She chuckles, as he heads on to the rest of the train.
  190. >You reach down into your suitcase, producing the bottle of liquor from earlier.
  191. >Your buzz was starting to fade.
  192. >Couldn’t have that now could you?
  193. >As you pull it out, you see Celestia shift in her seat.
  194. >Just like her...
  195. “God damn it.” You say, putting the bottle back away.
  196. >”Don’t let me stop you from enjoying yourself.” She says with another smile.
  197. “You know damn well I can’t drink now.”
  198. >”No, I don’t actually. Here, allow me.” She says, opening your suitcase with her magic, and pouring it into the glass that was there as well.
  199. >She places the glass on the window ledge beside you smiling, and returns to looking out her own window.
  200. >Was this mare for real?
  201. >You look up from your magazine, and stare at her.
  202. >The sunlight bouncing off her golden crown.
  203. >Her ethereal mane still flowing in the non-existent wind.
  204. >Why is she doing this?
  205. “Why?”
  206. >She looks over at you. “Hmm?”
  207. “Why are you still here?”
  208. >”Because I’m enjoying the company of a good friend.”
  209. >OW.
  210. >Right in the feels.
  211. “Even though I’m treating you like shit?”
  212. >”I wouldn’t say that.”
  213. “But I’ve done nothing but act cold towards you today.”
  214. >”It’s ok.”
  215. “You’re seriously not going to give up until I am talking are you?”
  216. >”It seems I’ve already done that.”
  217. >Damn, this one was sly.
  218. >You laugh weakly.
  219. “You’re a crafty one Princess, I’ll give you that.”
  220. >”I try.” She says smiling, returning to looking out the window.
  221. >Fucking hell.
  222. >This is not how you wanted to have you’re afternoon go.
  223. >All you wanted was to get plastered, and pass out somewhere.
  224. >And now, you cannot even bring yourself to drink.
  225. >What is wrong with you.
  226. >Seriously.
  227. >Every other time this happens, the drinking becomes easy.
  228. >You guzzle down as much alcohol as you can, pass out, and forget this day ever happened.
  229. >Why won’t they just leave you alone?
  230. >It’s just like her all over again.
  231. >Those words the Doctor said.
  232. >”She’ll always be with you in spirit.”
  233. >Maybe...
  234. >Maybe there was some truth in that.
  235. >You pull off the chain around your neck.
  236. >Opening the locket, you stare into her eyes.
  237. >She was always there when you needed her.
  238. “It’s her Birthday.” You finally say out loud.
  239. >”I’m sorry?”
  240. “I said, it’s her birthday today.”
  241. >”Well, I guess a celebration is in order. How old would she be today?”
  242. >You stare at Celestia.
  243. “THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?” you shout angrily.
  244. >”Nothing! I just thought it would be nice to celebrate the memory of a loved one.” She says sheepishly.
  245. >You look down at your locket.
  246. >Your tight grip slightly bending the silver frame.
  247. >Thankfully, the picture is fine.
  248. “How do you do it?” you say
  249. “How do you live like this?”
  250. >”Live like what?”
  251. “Live every day of your life, knowing that you will be around, even though all the ones you loved are long gone?”
  252. >She pauses, and looks into your eyes.
  253. >Those pale magenta eyes stare right into your soul.
  254. >”One day at a time, and I cherish every moment.” She says, still smiling.
  255. >One day at a time.
  256. >It was the almost exact thing she said to you all those years ago during your rehab.
  257. >Once you were back in jolly old England, you were learning how to walk again.
  258. >Your back broke from the impact of your tumble, but was slowly putting itself back together.
  259. >It was a slow painful process, but at least you would walk again.
  260. >One day, you were pushing yourself to hard, and collapsed.
  261. >She rushed over to your side.
  262. >She said, “Anon, darling, I know you want to be up and about, but I will always be there for you. We can take it one day at a time.”
  263. >You knew then and there, that she was the one.
  264. >You can’t even...
  265. >How does she...
  266. >What...
  267. >You cannot even into thinking processes anymore.
  268. >You open the locket again, taking out her picture.
  269. >She was always there for you.
  270. >Always willing to cheer you up.
  271. >That’s why you kept her close to your heart.
  272. >Always.
  273. >But now, not it seems like you forgot what she truly meant to you.
  274. >Instead of remembering the good times you had, you only remembered that one day.
  275. >That day you lost her.
  276. >And your daughter.
  277. >The picture is quite old, the only reason it’s still in decent shape is the enchantment you placed on it.
  278. “It’s time.” You say
  279. >Opening your wallet, which you still kept in your suitcase, you tuck it inside.
  280. >You get up, and open the train car door.
  281. >The whistling winds blow past you, buzzing by your ears.
  282. >You take the locket, and throw it as far as you can.
  283. >You watch, as it sails through the air, cracking open on a rock.
  284. >You close the door, the whistling of the wind ceases.
  285. >Celestia looks at you with confusion.
  286. “Thank you.”
  287. >”For what?” she says.
  288. “For just being there.”
  289. >She smiles and walks over to you.
  290. >”Friends are always there for friends in times of hardship Anonymous. Don’t ever forget that.” She says embracing you with a wing.
  291. >You can feel a single tear roll down your cheek.
  292. >No more tears.
  293. >She was in your dreams now.
  294. >The two of you sit back down in your respective seats.
  295. >She remains quiet for a little while, while you try to compose yourself.
  296. >It’s been so many years of this.
  297. >So many years of wallowing in self-pity.
  298. >It’s finally time to move on, and accept what has happened.
  299. “I’m still going on vacation.”
  300. >”Where you headed?” she asks
  301. “Hollywood. I felt like I needed a change of scenery for a while.”
  302. >”Really? I haven’t been in years.”
  303. “I’m not surprised considering all the work you have to do around the palace.”
  304. >She sighs “Yes, the life of Royalty is not all the glamour and splendour the tabloids make it out to be.”
  305. “When was the last time you took a holiday?”
  306. >”My, I can’t even remember. My duties of raising the sun always kept me near Canterlot. That, and the fact that there are always documents to look over, dignitaries to talk with, and an endless amount of paperwork.”
  307. “Sounds like you need a vacation more than I do.” You say with a laugh, the first genuine one you’ve had in over a week.
  308. >She laughs as well.
  309. >”Yes, I would love the opportunity to spend some time just relaxing.”
  310. “So, why not? You’re the Princess of the whole land. I’m sure you could take a week off.”
  311. >”I don’t think I could. There are so many things to do...”
  312. “Well, I’m sure your sister could pick up the slack a bit. Besides, you can raise the sun from anywhere right?”
  313. >”Well yes but...”
  314. “No buts. You and me. Hollywood. One week. Then we both get back to our normal lives and stop being so stressed.”
  315. >”So you, a strange alien creature, are asking the Royalty of a foreign place to go on a vacation with you, only after knowing each other for about 2 months?”
  316. >You pause, and rub your hand over your beard.
  317. “I’m sure stranger things have happened. Besides, you know you can’t stand my charm.” You say winking.
  318. >She laughs again.
  319. >”Well, there is still the matter of my presence. It would be rather bad for the royal image if the tabloids were to get a hold of this.”
  320. >Hmm
  321. “I have an idea if you’re willing to go along with me. So what say you Princess? Should a couple of weary immortals take some time off to mess with the younglings?”
  322. >You see that familiar twinkle in her eye.
  323. >Last time that happened, was when you were telling her about your Halloween plans.
  324. >Apparently the Princess used to have a knack for pranking p0nies as well.
  325. >She smiles.
  326. >”You make a compelling argument Anonymous. It looks like I have no choice but to accept.”
  327. “Now we can celebrate!” you say, reaching for your sack of bits.
  328. >You spot the waitress from earlier as she walks into your car.
  329. >You get up, and walk over to her.
  330. >W:”Anything I can get for you sir?”
  331. “I don’t suppose you have any cake lying around?”
  332. >W:”As a matter of fact, the chef just finished a large Banana Walnut cake. Would you like a piece?”
  333. “Three in fact, one for me, and one for my lady friend over there.”
  334. >W:”And the third?”
  335. “For an old friend. Also some Champaign would be lovely.”
  336. >W:”Right away sir.” She says, heading towards the dining car.
  337. >A few minutes later, the waitress returns with your order.
  338. >She places the cake on the table between the seats, as well as the bubbly.
  339. >You pop the cork, the fizz gathering slowly, and into your glass.
  340. >You pour yourself some, some for Celestia, and some in a third glass.
  341. >Raising your glass above the table, you say
  342. “A toast. To the end of time.”
  343. >Celestia eyes you worriedly.
  344. “I’m KIDDING. A toast. To new beginnings.”
  345. >She smiles. “To New beginnings.”
  346. >You place Mira’s picture next to the third slice of cake.
  347. “Happy Birthday darling.”
  348. >You look across the table, Celestia gently sipping her glass.
  349. >The sun was slowly setting outside, the golden hues reflecting off the rocky landscape.
  350. >The blood reds and golden oranges paint the terrain with a feeling of serenity.
  351. >She smiles at you, and you at her.
  352. >For the first time, you feel truly at peace.
  353.
  354. Meanwhile on a stormy mountain peak...
  355. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPfUy4j9V7c
  356. >Hollow footsteps echo across the walls, as three cloaked figures walk down a spiralling staircase.
  357. >The walls are lined with rune etchings and classical depictions of many years gone by.
  358. >The lead figure stops to examine one of the depictions.
  359. “And this was when we first discovered the Lines. Their raw power caused many of the initial explorers to descend into sudden and irreversible madness. I was one of the young explorers at the time, and this discovery was heralded as the greatest moment in all of history.”
  360. >He continues down the steps, continuing his lecture.
  361. “At least that is what the history books used to say.”
  362. >”So, what is it we are looking for down here boss? Some kind of magicie thing?” the one gryphon says.
  363. >”No you dolt, it’s obviously the line he was just mentioning.” The other one replies, smacking him upside the head.
  364. “Now, now boys. There is no need to fight. You are both right in some aspects.”
  365. >They both cease their squabbling immediately.
  366. >He may SOUND nice, but that tone meant, “Shut up or I throw you off the mountain.”
  367. >Three workers suffered that fate THIS WEEK.
  368. >Soon, the ground floor started to become visible.
  369. >”Hey, uh, boss? Why is the floor all white like that?” the one gryphon asks.
  370. “Bones.”
  371. >The two guards looked at each other.
  372. >”Uhh, bones?”
  373. “Yes. Bones. Was I not clear?”
  374. >”No no boss, crystal clear.” They say in unison.
  375. “Good. Now. Light the braziers around the room.”
  376. >The gryphons take the torches they were carrying and ignite the various pyres around the room.
  377. >The blazing heat reveals the intricate carvings on the wall, as well as the massive crystalline formation in the centre.
  378. >The flickering light of the fires casts eerie shadows along the walls.
  379. “Good. Now, go back up top, and bring me the bones and the chemists. I need them to perform some tests.”
  380. >The guards salute, and fly up away.
  381. >The cloaked master sheds his heavy shawl, leaving in on the carved steps.
  382. >His skeletal form often scared the workers.
  383. >He heard the hushed whispers about camp.
  384. >How could that thing be alive?
  385. >Is he truly who he says he is?
  386. >They were so afraid.
  387. >And rightly, they should be.
  388. >He walks over to the gigantic Crystalline geode, touching his skeletal horn to it.
  389. >The dull hum of magical energy permeates the air.
  390. >A sudden spark causes the inside of the geode to swirl and come to life.
  391. >”M-master? Is that you?” a ghostly voice calls from inside the crystal.
  392. “Yes my last faithful student. I have returned.”
  393. >”How long?”
  394. “Too long old friend. Too long.”
  395. >”I’m sorry I could not have been more help...”
  396. “You have played your role to a tee my apprentice. It is time for you to earn your reward.”
  397. >The sound of wing beats fills the cavern.
  398. “Ah, as if on cue.”
  399. >The gryphon guards return, carrying a large sack of bones.
  400. >”Where ya want these boss?” the one asks.
  401. “Right there is fine. I suggest you step back.”
  402. >Star Swirl places his horn back upon the crystal.
  403. >A swirling green energy grows around him and the geode.
  404. >The flames of the braziers grow, as the magical potency of the spell begins to take effect.
  405. “What once was old, now becomes new” he chants
  406. “The will of the bold, and the blood of few.”
  407. >The gryphon guards lose consciousness and hover above the ground.
  408. “With our drive let the dead rise again”
  409. >The bones in the sack begin to rise, and connect.
  410. “For once we thrive, the traitors shall feel pain”
  411. >The gryphons’ forms explode, leaving a fine swirling mist of red.
  412. “For soon the Star shall rise once more”
  413. >The mist begins to coalesce around the bones, giving them flesh and form.
  414. “And under MY banner, or horizons will expand from the shore.”
  415. >The newly formed monstrosity rises from the ground, taking its first few breaths.
  416. “For when the time comes, my army will rise.”
  417. >The Unicorn stands, taking a few wavering steps.
  418. “None shall escape the war drums, even if we must burn the skies.”
  419. >”You always had a way with words Master.”
  420. “Thank you Clover. It is good to have you back. Shall we get something to eat? You must be famished.” He says with a bony smile.
  421. >Their raucous laughter rises from the depths of the sacrificial chamber, chilling the bones of all those stationed in the mountain camp.
  422. >Today was a day of progress.
