- “And there they stood, high above the frozen chasm below. The battle raged on for hours, the champions of this mortal world doing their best to stem the tide of endless undead as they streamed from the horrific vaults. Lord Sanguine stood his ground, sword and shield in hand, ready to lay down his life for those he held dear. Then, a brilliant flash of light! His prayers were answered, as he received a boon from the Light itself. He charged at the hulking abomination of the former prince, and stuck his cursed blade in twain. The souls of the dead from long ago, released from the eternal torment. They surrounded the Fallen Prince, and lashed out at him with their unbridled fury. Retribution was paid in full that day.”
- “And that is your lesson for today initiates. Please review chapter’s one through three in your books.”
- >An elderly man says, standing behind a wooden podium.
- >His students file out, one by one from the lecture hall, muttering about the tale of Fire and Brimstone they had just heard.
- >The professor stretches his aching back.
- >It’s becoming harder and harder for him to get up and perform his duties lately.
- >Gathering up his books, he heads into his office.
- >He always loved telling that story.
- >Closing the heavy oaken door behind him, he sets his materials down on his overly large desk.
- >It was a simple room, for a simple man of the cloth.
- >He rests his weary bones down in his large chair.
- >Sighing, he pulls open his desk drawer.
- >Inside, lays an old friend of his.
- >He pulls out a small golden necklace, shaped like a star.
- >The only reminder he has of that night so long ago.
- >He always kept this trinket close to his heart.
- >He puts it on, careful to not disrupt the spun-silver thread.
- >There is a knock on his door.
- >”Ah good, you are still here. Are you ready for the ceremony tonight?” another elderly man says
- “Yes Elder Lyons, I just have a few last minute teaching details to attend to.” He replies, not looking up from his desk.
- >”Good, I will see you there. Light be with you.”
- “And with you.”
- >Elder Lyons exits the office, closing the door gentle behind him.
- >It was the teachers 35th year with the order.
- >Quite a feat for this day and age.
- >Temple life was the only life he could remember, other than the Crusades.
- >He spent nearly his entire life serving the greater good, and his beliefs.
- >He devoted his entire being to protecting those who were too weak to protect themselves.
- >He sacrificed much to get where he is today
- >And on the eve of the 36th anniversary of his initiation, he would finally be accepted as an Elder in the order, and given a name.
- >But for now,
- >You are Anonymous, Templar of the Holy Light.
- >And this is your story.
- >Finishing a cup of your favourite tea, you set about your morning prayers.
- >Ever since you were inducted into the order, your daily routine while at the temple rarely changed.
- >Woke up, prayers, jog, exercise, battle training, teach/sit in on classes, study, assist around the temple, solve the local rat infestation etc.
- >Rather boring and trivial things.
- >But it kept you content and happy.
- >The food was good
- >The company was wonderful
- >It was all you could ask for in a simple life.
- >But as you grew older, you missed the thrill of adventure.
- >You missed the thrill of battle.
- >Since you were in your 50th winter, you had long since been taken off active duty, taking on more of a scholarly role, and that of a mentor.
- >Sure occasionally there was a problem in town that needed solving.
- >A drunken brigand causing trouble, a gang of goblins needing a reminder that they should stay in the hills, nothing major.
- >You miss the feeling of your mace and shield in hand, and the blood of your enemies on your face.
- >It was a glorious time.
- >But those days are long past you now.
- >You get up from the altar, you knees creaking as you stand.
- >Damn these old bones of yours.
- >If only they would keep up with your mind.
- >You snuff out the incense candles, and gather up your Holy Book.
- >The church was usually quiet this time of day; many of the younger initiates were out practicing their swordsmanship or doing chores.
- >And here you were, contemplating the infinite majesty of the Light instead.
- >Ok, infinite majesty was taking it a bit too far, but your faith was strong.
- >Your faith was your shield and your sword.
- >And no foe could take that from you.
- >You exit the cathedral, taking in the scents of the cool winter’s afternoon.
- >A fresh covering of snow coats the ground, gingerly hanging from the many spires of the monastery.
- >The chill of the air numbs your fingers.
- >You stick your hands into your robes, trying to warm up.
- >You head inside the western wing, and head towards the library.
- >You promised one of the other Elders you would fill in for them today.
- >They were off looking for a specific tome at another of the Monasteries.
- >You didn’t mind.
- >Many of the initiates, in their infinite zeal for training their bodies, often neglected their minds.
- >It’s a shame really.
- >You arrive in the Library, the smell of old texts fills your senses.
- >You loved that smell.
- >It reminds you of your old teacher, Light rest his soul.
- >”Ah, your here, good.” The other templar says “I really need some fresh air.”
- “Please, take your time. I have some material to go over anyways.”
- >”Will do. Looking forward to your ceremony tonight?”
- “I am, it will be good to be able to finally take on some more responsibility around here.”
- >The other templar laughs.
- >”You’ve always been quite the character. I’ll make sure we have a celebratory pint waiting for you.”
- >You and the other templar shake hands, and he heads out into the frigid air.
- >You grab a nearby book, and settle down into your favourite chair by the fire place.
- >It’s title “The Light and How to Swing It”
- >You loved this book.
- >It was the closest attempt any Templar made at making the Holy Life humorous.
- >Shame the author suffered a terrible fate at the hands of his former student.
- >The hours tick by slowly.
- >Occasionally someone will come by, looking for a certain tome or scroll.
- >You’ve been here so long, finding tomes may as well be your special talent.
- >That, and being able to cleave three goblins in half at once.
- >But that was years ago.
- >The warm fire heats your tired bones.
- >You’ve been here a little while now, and the sun is beginning to set.
- >”Sir”
- >Mmmm so comfy.
- >“SIR”
- >Nothing could make you uncomfortable now.
- >You feel a jab in your sides.
- >”SIR!”
- “Uhgh yeah, IM UP, IM UP”
- >Darn, you must’ve nodded off.
- >”Sorry to wake you sir, but your wanted in the main hall.”
- >Main hall?
- “Alright, thank you. Go about your business.”
- >”Thank you sir.” The young initiate says, heading off.
- >What could they possibly want?
- >You grab your holy book and set off towards the hall.
- >Oh, this can’t be good.
- >In front of you are two armoured templars and the Grandmaster.
- “Grandmaster, to what do I owe the honor?” you say in greeting as you walk in the main hall.
- “Ah, it’s good to see you brother. We have an important task for you.”
- >You knew this couldn’t be good.
- “I am your sword, what do you require of me?”
- >”Oh soon-to-be Elder, there is no need for such formalities. There’s been a report of a few goblins encroaching on a cottage outside the town, we would like you to investigate.”
- >YOU?
- >INVESTIGATE?
- >It’s like they read your mind.
- “As you wish grandmaster, I shall depart immediately.”
- >The Master chuckles at your enthusiasm.
- >It has been so long since you’ve had a proper outing.
- >And by proper, you mean by separating an evil creatures head from it shoulders.
- >Sure, you relished in battle, but it was all for the protection of the weak.
- >Such was the creed of your order.
- >You head towards your office.
- >It was time to slip into something a bit more...
- >Sturdy.
- >Your plate boots crunch into the snow below you.
- >It felt good to be back in the saddle.
- >Or in this case, the plate armor.
- >You never liked the bulky plate armor your brothers wore.
- >You preferred the armored plate skirts of old.
- >Much more manoeuvrability.
- >Your buckler sat on your back, and your mace at your hip.
- >You decided to leave your helmet behind.
- >They inhibit your vision far too much.
- >You’ve been walking for about an hour now.
- >Intel reports that the Goblins were forming a raiding party.
- >You were about to crash that party.
- >Reports show that they were forming somewhere in the forest, just beyond the town boundaries.
- >Your instructions were to prevent the goblins from doing any harm, and to persuade them to go home to the best of your abilities.
- >Whether that meant talking them down, or knocking them down, it didn’t matter.
- >Orders were orders.
- >The cool winter air fills your lungs with every breath.
- >It keeps you alert, and makes you feel alive.
- >Your just on the outskirts of the forest now.
- >You can hear some sort of ruckus coming from within.
- >Looks like the party got started without you.
- >You pick up the pace, your heavy boots crushing the ground beneath your feet.
- >The noise sounds like arguing.
- >”ME NO STUPID. YOU STUPID. ME TOLD YOU THERE NO GEMS THROUGH SILLY BLUE THING.”
- >Sure sounds like goblins.
- >But, silly blue thing?
- >As stealthily as possible, you sneak around the trees trying to spot the goblins.
- >In front of you, the trees have grown rather thick, so it’s hard to get a clear line of sight.
- >You can hear the creatures on the other side of the line of trees.
- “Gentlemen, is there a problem?” you say, rounding the corner with your hands raised.
- >These...
- >These weren’t Goblins.
- >They looked like large canines.
- >Large bi-pedal canines.
- >They appear to be wearing some kind of rudimentary armor, and they are all carrying spears.
- >The largest one speaks up “What are you, some sort of pink monkey thing? You help us find gems!”
- >Ok, they were still a bit like goblins.
- >Stupid.
- “Now, I don’t know what you are talking about, perhaps we can talk about what you’re doing on out-of-bounds land?”
- >”STUPID CREATURE,” the largest one says “WE MAKE YOU FIND GEMS FOR US”
- >What a monstrous creature.
- >The largest one throws his spear at you.
- >Like a flash of lightning, you whip your shield in front of you.
- >The spear clatters away harmlessly.
- >You were hoping it would come to this.
- “Not a smart move. I’ll give you one last chance. Back off.”
- >Your only answer is another spear being tossed at you.
- >Excellent.
- >You bring your shield up again, as the spear collides.
- >This was going to be fun.
- >You charge the closest beast, smashing him square in the face with your shield.
- >He recoils in pain, grasping at his snout which was gushing with blood.
- >The other dog-like creatures, shocked at your burst of speed, clamber towards you.
- >That was their first mistake.
- >You grab the wounded dog by his shoulders, and fling him towards them.
- >All four of them go down in one big heap.
- “So, are you ready to give up yet?” you say smugly.
- >The dog creatures rise to their feet, and take off into the woods.
- >Looks like another victory for...
- >Wait.
- >They are headed towards the cabin.
- >Good going Anon.
- >You give chase.
- >For lumbering oafs, these things sure could haul ass.
- >You spot their tracks in the snow.
- >They really are not that bright.
- >The tree line begins to thin, and you can see the road leading up to the cottage.
- >But where it once stood, a swirling blue portal of energy hovers.
- >Oh just perfect.
- >Mages.
- >YOU HATE MAGES.
- >No respect, always tinkering with things they shouldn’t.
- >You can see the dogs disappear into the swirling portal.
- >Well, never leave a job half done you always say.
- >You approach the portal, sticking your hand through.
- >Seems safe enough.
- >You step on through, and appear on a mountainside.
- >The first thing you notice is the change in temperature.
- >It’s hot as heck here.
- >The second thing you notice is that at least 10 dogs are charging towards you.
- >You were only a few hours away from retirement, and now this?
- >You wouldn’t want it any other way.
- >In about 5 minutes, you have 10 badly wounded creatures lying at your feet.
- “Told you we should have discussed this. Now, are you going to leave us alone?”
- >The apparent leader nods his head.
- “And are you going to respect people’s property?”
- >He nods his head again.
- >You broke this one’s leg during the fray.
- >Bending down, you place your hands on his injured leg, and say a prayer.
- >You feel the Holy Light fill your being as energy fills your soul.
- >It seems much more potent today.
- >You can feel the energy drain from you, and go into the creatures leg.
- >You watch, as the torn skin mends itself.
- “Feeling better?”
- >He grunts
- “Good, Light be with You.”
- >You turn around to head back through the portal.
- >Unfortunately, it’s nowhere to be seen.
- >Perfect.
- >Just perfect.
- >You spot a small town in the distance.
- >Hopefully some of the locals will be able to point you in the right direction home.
- >You begin heading in the direction of the town, only to find that the path loops through a foreboding looking forest.
- >It’s not like this has never happened before.
- >The continue your pilgrimage along the path.
- >The sun shines bright here, much more so than back home, even in the summer months.
- >You remember one time when you headed south on a excursion to the arid deserts of the Yojimba Wastes.
- >The sun scorched the very earth you tread upon, but even still, it could not compare to the luminosity of the glowing globe in the sky here.
- >Yet the land seemed to prosper.
- >As you head down the mountain you appeared on, you take in more of your surroundings.
- >The trees were lush, and the soil seemed fertile.
- >Either the people here were excellent farmers, or this land remained untouched by the scourge of evil.
- >The sky was a brilliant blue, nary a cloud to be seen.
- >It was as if you were in heaven.
- >It wasn’t until you almost got to the forest that you noticed one other thing in particular.
- >Your armour seemed to be lighter than usual.
- >Maybe those beasts managed to clip you somewhere?
- >You unstrapped your shield, and laid it against a nearby tree.
- >It too seemed lighter than normal.
- >Just what is going on?
- >You grab your mace at your side, and toss it in the air.
- >You normally wouldn’t try something so silly as this, but you were just full of great ideas today weren’t you?
- >You hurl your weapon high into the sky; much farther than you ever could, even in your youth.
- >It soars, higher and higher, well above the treetops, and lands in front of you with a resounding crash.
- >Either you were much stronger than you felt, or something was definitely up.
- >You sheathe your weapon and throw your shield on your back.
- >The forest loomed ever closer, and the sun was beginning to set.
- >it would be unfortunate if you had to make camp out in the woods so you pick up the pace.
- >The forest overgrowth grew quickly as you followed the snaking path.
- >Many of the trees looked to be ancient.
- >Just like how you felt.
- >It was quiet here as well.
- >There was the occasional sound of a forest creature, or the rustling of the leaves in the wind, but you paid them no mind.
- >It was a quiet moment.
- >A time for reflection.
- >It quickly grew dark as you forced you way deeper into the forest, the glowing light emanating from your pauldrons helped light your path.
- >You always knew having these things would be helpful, regardless of what the initiates thought.
- >They always said should guards were growing much too rapidly.
- >You however appreciated the work that went into crafting such a marvellous piece.
- >That and the fact that when an enemy sees a flaming man running towards them, they tend to flee.
- >The path slowly becomes less arduous, and looks more traveled than the road you were on previously.
- >Suddenly, you can hear screams of terror coming from deeper inside the forest.
- >Off the beaten path.
- >You unsheathe your weapon and shield.
- >The race through the trees, knocking braches aside, as the screaming voice grows ever closer.
- >You emerge into a small clearing, where there is a hollowed out tree.
- >The screams appear to be coming from inside.
- >Pacing back and forth in the middle of the clearing are three wolves.
- >But, these are no ordinary wolves.
- >They appear to be made of some sort of wood material.
- >Great.
- >Elementals.
- >How you HATE elementals.
- >You grip your mace tightly as you advance on the pack of wolf-like creatures.
- >They turn, hearing your heavy footsteps, and snarl at you.
- >You were never one for battle cries; instead, you let them advance on you.
- >You step into the middle of them, as they begin to circle around you.
- >The largest one, most likely the alpha, snaps his jaws at you.
- >You hate resorting to violence, so you try something else instead.
- >You raise your shield high, and invoke the power of the Light to send off a bright flash.
- >The surrounding area illuminates with Holy brilliance.
- >The wolves panic, and scatter, leaving you alone with the voice in the clearing.
- >You calmly walk over to the tree, and kneel down.
- >If you remember correctly, the screams sounded like they came from a lost child.
- >You look inside the tree, and spot a small...
- >Unicorn?
- >It’s a tiny white unicorn with a purple and pink mane.
- >It spots you, and backs further into the tree.
- >You must seem foreboding to the little creature.
- “Hey now,” you say in the softest voice possible “I won’t hurt you.”
- >The little one seems still slightly afraid, but walks towards you.
- >You outstretch a gloved hand.
- “Come here little one, it’s alright.”
- >The tiny filly, with tears in her eyes, advances towards you ever so slowly.
- >She puts a hoof on your hand.
- >”uoy era tahw?” it says
- >WAIT.
- >IT TALKS?
- >You can barely make out what it is saying.
- >It’s speech sounds like an ancient dialect, often used by the mountain dwarves.
- >You are a bit rusty, but you manage to squawk out;
- “I am Templar Anonymous, of the StoneHearth Chapter.”
- >The creature looks shocked at your ability to communicate, although it was kind of bad.
- >”I’m-I’m Sweetie Belle, and I got lost in the forest on my way to meet my friends.”
- “Well now, it sounds like you had quite the scare. Your family must be worried sick about you.”
- >She nods her head, holding back more tears.
- “Now, now, it’s going to be alright. Tell me, which way do you live?”
- >The small equine points towards the direction of the town.
- >Of course.
- “Come along, I will take you home.” You say, putting your hands together.
- >She looks at you questioningly, and then steps onto your hands.
- >You carefully lift her up, and place her on your right shoulder.
- >She carefully grips (WHAT) your shoulder plate, making herself comfortable.
- >You make sure she is properly seated before beginning your trek again.
- >This would be strange to you, if your land was not populated with mythical creatures.
- >There have also been many stories of spell casters accidently sending people into foreign lands, and sometimes foreign planes.
- >You heard a story one time of a barbarian being sent to a land filled with talking bears.
- >He eventually returned, but not without a couple of new rugs.
- >You were not like that though.
- >Whatever the situation might be, you had to make do now.
- >You had no idea when you would be able to return home at this point.
- >Or at all for that matter.
- >The small unicorn on your shoulder shivers slightly in the cool night air.
- >You unclip your cloak, and gently drape it over her.
- >She snuggles into it, shivering slightly.
- >After about a half hour of walking, you arrive on the outskirts of the forest.
- >The moon is in full view now.
- >Its full splendour shining down, illuminating the land in a pale glow.
- >The path shifts into a dirt road, and you can see the small town in the distance.
- “Wake up young one.” You whisper to the sleeping filly on your shoulder.
- >She must have been out there longer than she let on.
- >She jumps awake with a start.
- “We are nearly in town, which house is yours?”
- >”The large one just outside town, Carousel Boutique”
- >There WAS a large building not too far from here.
- >It’s top shaped like that of a wandering circus.
- >You continue walking down the path, headed towards the building when you spot 6 much larger equines heading down the road.
- >You may have a problem.
- “Young one, It appears the locals have come to find you. I will leave you here, but you must head to them post haste.” You say.
- >”But what about you?” she says, her large eyes staring up at you.
- “I would rather not interfere with the locals, especially since I stand out quite a bit. Light be with you Sweetie Belle.”
- >You turn to walk away, when a pair of marshmallow hovers wrap around your boots.
- >”But Mister, I’m sure they would want to thank you for helping me.”
- “I would like to think so, but your smiling face is thanks enough.”
- >The other villagers are getting closer now. You can see a white unicorn panicking, and keeping ahead of the others.
- >Sweetie Belle looks up you again, staring right into your very soul.
- Sighing, you say “Alright, let us take you home.”
- >She jumps for joy, and hops back onto your back, climbing (AGAIN, HOW?) your armour, and rests on your shoulder.
- >You continue down the path, headed towards the other tiny horses.
- >Almost all at once, they spot your carrying Sweetie Belle.
- >Their reactions range from shock, to anger, to relief.
- >The most surprising reaction?
- >The pair of cyan coloured hooves headed straight for your head.
- >You duck as quickly as possible, narrowly avoiding a marshmallow beating, and drop Sweetie Belle to the ground.
- >You are NOT interested in a fight.
- >Especially with locals.
- >The cyan Pegasus turns around in the air, and charges back at you.
- >You can hear Sweetie Belle arguing with the others as you prepare to stop the cyan comet.
- >Just before she reaches you however, you step sideways, and grab one of its hooves.
- >She stops dead in the air, and turns to face you.
- “It’s a pleasure to meet you, now, would you kindly stop trying to kick my skull in? I do NOT appreciate it.”
- >The cyan Pegasus with a rainbow mane yells “It can TALK?”
- “I would say the same about you.” You say, dropping her to the ground.
- “I was simply escorting Mrs. Sweetie Belle here out of the forest. If my presence is that distrustful, I shall be on my way.” You say, turning around.
- >You let go of the pegasus’ hoof, and start to head back into the forest.
- >”WAIT!” you hear called from behind you.
- >Will this day just NOT end?
- >The purple unicorn from the group comes up behind you.
- >”I’m sorry about Rainbow Dash, she can be a bit... Impulsive.” She says
- >”My name is Twilight Sparkle. You are?”
- “Templar Anonymous of the StoneHearth chapter. I don’t believe that any of you have seen a human before?”
- >She shakes her head no.
- “Not surprising. I chased some creatures away from my land, and followed them through a portal. Unfortunately before I could return home, the portal collapsed. Such things happen.”
- >Twilight looks shocked at this.
- “As I thought. I did not mean to cause any trouble, I was just doing my duty.”
- >”And that would be?”
- “To help those in need, and to protect those who need it most. Such is the creed of my order.”
- >Twilight scrunches her face, and returns to the group of p0nies.
- >At least you think they are p0nies.
- >They are too small to be horses.
- >The group breaks, and Twilight comes up to you again.
- >”Well Mr. Anonymous, we are ever so grateful that you rescued Rarity’s sister.”
- “It was no problem at all Mam. She would do well to stay out of the forest at night however. It seems that accursed creatures wander these woods.”
- >”Well, that’s precisely why you are going to stay with us until you can find a way to return home.”
- “Are you sure? I would not want to put a burden on anyone.”
- >”We are certain Mister Anonymous.” The white one says “I can never repay you for rescuing my dear Sweetie Belle. It would be my pleasure to make sure your stay is comfortable.”
- “If that is the case, I thank you humbly. I have not much to offer in recompense, but my services.”
- >”There will be no need for that right away deary,” the white unicorn continues “You will stay with em and Sweetie Belle, we have plenty of room.”
- >This time Twilight speaks up; “I guess we should introduce ourselves.”
- >She introduces you to each of her friends one by one.
- >The bashful and timid Fluttershy.
- >The hyperactive and peppy one Pinkie Pie.
- >The athletic and country one Applejack.
- >The aerial ace and loyal one Rainbow Dash
- >And of course Rarity, Sweetie’s sister.
- >After all the introductions are made, you as escorted to Rarity’s home.
- >The others take their leave one by one, and you head inside.
- >It was a modest little shop, with a few things you did not recognize.
- >Mostly because everything was miniature.
- “Thank you very much Madam Rarity. This will be more than fine” you say, as Rarity leads you into the guest room.
- >”Don’t mention it Anonymous. You must be exhausted. Get some sleep, and we can discuss everything else in the morning.”
- “Of course.” You say, as the door closes.
- >You carefully remove your armour, leaving your elderly form visible.
- >Normally this much activity for one day would wear you out completely.
- >But you felt right as rain.
- >Like you hardly spent any energy at all.
- >It could have something to do with going through the portal, or your adrenaline running on max all day.
- >You carefully assemble your armour in a corner, and make sure it is clean.
- >There is a small bed, just barely big enough to fit your oversized form.
- >You pull out your holy book and read your favourite passage.
- >Slowly your eyes begin to close, the days events playing through your mind.
- >If you were 10 years younger, you would be distraught that you are trapped on some foreign plain of existence.
- >Now?
- >Your almost content with what life has thrown your way.
- >Sure, Temple life had its perks.
- >It was a quiet time, with hope for a peaceful retirement.
- >It’s what you’ve always wanted.
- >But it always felt like something was missing.
- >Now, you feel better than ever, and a whole new wealth of experiences await you.
- >You think back to earlier.
- >You most likely missed the ascension ceremony.
- >The other’s would most likely be out looking for you.
- >Not like you can do much about it anyways.
- >Darkness begins to fill your mind.
- >The slow touch of the sandman takes root.
- >Your only regret is that you never received a name for yourself.
- >Ah well.
- >There were still plenty of years ahead.
