  1. >You crack open your eyes and stare at the ceiling. You can’t remember the last time you had a full night of sleep, but it had to have been a long time ago for you to feel this refreshed.
  2. >Before you can try and recall why that is, you feel a reminder climb up the side of the bed and underneath your covers.
  3. >A little lump makes its way from the bedside to your chest, making its way up towards your face. Massive eyes sparkle at you from under the covers, a pair of massive sky blue orbs.
  4. >You reach your hands down and pull him out from under the sheets, dropping him on top of your stomach.
  5. >He smiles wide as you blink at him a few times, still trying to gather your thoughts as you wake up. You ignore him for the moment and switch off your alarm clock before turning back to him.
  6. > “Hey dad! I made sure no one woke you up this morning.”
  7. >You mumble some form of thankful response and start to sit up. He slides down into your lap and sits down on his haunches.
  8. > “So, do I get a hug today? Do I?”
  9. >You sigh and open up your arms, much to his delight. With a leap, he wraps his arms around your neck and nuzzles his face into you, his swiss cheese legs scrambling to gain footing against the surface of your shirt.
  10. >You return the hug for a few moments before ushering him back down to the bed, swinging your own legs over the side and getting up.
  11. >The moment you open your bedroom door, you’re greeted by the sounds of chaos.
  12. >Pretty much like every morning.
  13. >A pair of changeling satyr-children run around wrestling with each other, tackling each other to the ground and a kicking with their exoskeleton legs. First one and then the other, they see you coming and stand up on their holed hooves, pressing against the wall to let you pass with their arms folded behind their backs.
  14. >You roll your eyes and ignore them, moving on towards the living room. They give each other a glare when they think you aren’t looking and fall in step behind you.
  15. >As you enter the living room, you find half a dozen more abominations running around the couch and crashing over the end table. You leave them be for the moment and head for the kitchen, making a quick bowl of cereal and grabbing a seat.
  16. >A large group of children gather around the table, pushing and shoving each other to get closer to you. You ignore them, like you always do, and keep eating.
  17. >After a few moments of silence, you put your spoon down in your empty bowl and push it away, turning your attention to the spawn. They all smile at you like they’ve done absolutely nothing wrong, as if that was a possibility.
  18. “Alright, someone go first. I don’t care who.”
  19. >They all start shouting at once, jumping over one another and trying to climb up on to you.
  20. “ALRIGHT, EVERYONE, CALM DOWN. SIT BACK DOWN.” You raise a hand, and your voice, and they all calm down, returning to the kitchen floor. “Guess I have to choose. You, closest one. What’s happening?”
  21. >One of the children, a little girl, smiles and comes up to your feet. She wraps an arm around your leg and looks up at you with pleading eyes, her smile immediately disappearing into a pout.
  22. > “Daddy, Volcano was being mean to me.”
  23. “Did you hit him?”
  24. > “Yes.”
  25. “Did he stop?”
  26. > “No.”
  27. “Well, obviously that doesn’t work, then. Stop hitting him and find out what he responds to. Make him realize you mean business.”
  28. >She pouts for real this time and crosses her arms. “But why don’t you just spank him?”
  29. “Because if I were to spank every one of you, I’d be here all day. And your asses are made of bone. Next.”
  30. >Chrysalis had been a fine enough woman, when she was in her human form. You’d grown to love her, but whether or not you had actually fallen in love with her or the image she was projecting was still debateable.
  31. >That night was one of the best you had in your life.
  32. >The years that followed, however, were less than satisfactory.
  33. >Seven years ago, you awoke to find your house filled with somewhere around a hundred eggs. You still don’t know exactly how many there were.
  34. >On your fridge, there was a simple note: “I had a great night. Unfortunately, I can’t stick around. Love loses its taste if you keep feeding from one person. Please watch after my little ones, because Celestia as my witness, I sure can’t. <3”
  35. >That was the day you had become father of one hundred little bug people.
  36. >The next child, a little boy, comes up to you and smiles. You pat him on the head.
  37. “What’s up?”
  38. > “Nothin’, I just wanted a hug.”
  39. >You sigh and bend over, giving him what he asked for.
  40. “I still don’t get what’s up with you guys and hugs.”
  41. > “We just like ‘em, is all.”
  42. >You place him back down on the ground.
  43. “What’s your name?”
  44. > “Crispy.”
  45. >You smile to yourself. When the majority of them had grown old enough to read, you let them go through a dictionary and choose their own names. No way you were going to name all of them yourself.
  46. “Nice name. Next.”
  47. >You spend the rest of your morning dealing with the issues of the day and rubbing your temples. Eventually, all of the kids who wanted to see you have seen you, and you’ve done pretty much all you can.
  48. >You place your bowl in the sink and look at the time. You’re going to be late, again, but when you brought five of the abominations to work one day, disguised as normal children (you had discovered their ability to do what their mother could do the night before, and immediately put it to use), your boss had been a lot more lenient with your schedule.
  49. >Throwing on some new clothes, you head for the door, waving goodbye to all of the childlings inside.
  50. “I’m leaving. If you need anything, I’ll be back at the usual time. I still don’t know how you guys are alive considering you won’t eat anything I feed you, but, you know, do what you always do for lunch, if you even eat it. Don’t destroy the house any more than you already have.”
  51. >A chorus of goodbyes blasts at you from within, nearly shattering your eardrums. A few more changeling creatures are playing in the yard, following your rule and disguising themselves as humans while outside.
  52. >One of them spots you and beams, flying towards you with invisible wings. She lands on your back and wraps her arms around you in a hug.
  53. “Hey, no flying outside! We don’t want the neighbors freaking out. What do you want?”
  54. > “I just wanted to ask if you had a good night’s sleep! It was my idea to leave you alone until you were awake.”
  55. “The kid who was waiting for me to wake up said it was his idea.”
  56. > “Aw, man! I bet it was Jet. That lying butt head. I bet he wanted a hug, too.”
  57. “Yes. I still don’t understand the hug thing, but hey, if its all you guys want from me, I can do it. What’s your name, anyways?”
  58. > “Mistake!” She drops from your shoulders and stands in front of you, eyes squinted and smile wide.
  59. >You can’t help but smirk.
  60. “Such a fitting name. And to think, you came up with it all on your own.”
  61. >She reaches out her arms and you pick her up, giving her a hug.
  62. “I have to leave now, but I guess I have time for one more hug. Especially in return for a good night of sleep.”
  63. >You set her down on the ground and step over her, leaving the house behind as you get to the sidewalk.
  64. “Bye, Mistake. Tell your brothers and sisters... well, I don’t know. Tell them I like them when they aren’t massive butt heads.”
  65. >She nods as you walk away. She watches from a distance as you walk to work, leaving the children alone to their own devices. One of her sisters, Tractor, comes up beside her.
  66. > “I’m hungry. Let’s go get some food.”
  67. >Mistake nods and licks her lips, looking off down the row of houses. The sisters nod at each other and head down the street, still in their human forms.
  68. >They approach the front door of a house they haven’t been to. Tractor reaches up and rings the door bell, quickly jumping to Mistake’s side as footsteps approach the door. An old lady answers, taken back by the height of her visitors.
  69. > “Hello, miss! We just wanted to know, would you like a hug?”
