- “Please, Anon. We’ve already been over this! You said you would do it!”
- “I said I MIGHT do it, Twilight. And you promised there would be a royal banquet celebrating my departure.” You cross your arms and lean back against the wall, your furrowed brow aimed at the mare. “I don’t care how shiny your crown is, you making me a sandwich does not count.”
- Princess Twilight Sparkle glances up from her notes and pouts her bottom lip at you. She taps her hooves on the marble palace floor impatiently as she motions her eyes towards the mirror.
- “Oh, come on! The longer you sit here, the less time there is before the portal closes. Please? I’d be really, really grateful.”
- “I’d be really grateful if my stomach was full.”
- Twilight chews the inside of her cheek as she stares you down. “Alright, fine. I’ll get the royal cooks to have a banquet lined up for you when you get back. But you have to go right now.”
- “Deal.” You smirk and stroll in front of the mirror. “But there better be a salad bar. And shrimps with cocktail sauce. And...” You pause. “Wait, hold on. I don’t even remember what I’m doing. I know, I know, you spent the last hour explaining it but I was just so disappointed by the sandwich I just got distracted.”
- Running low on patience, Twilight thrusts a hoof in the direction of the mirror. “That thing. You’re going to go through it. Spend as much time as you want in there, and remember to take notes, but come back before the end of the third day. That’s when the portal closes again.”
- “What happens if I’m still on the other side?”
- “Then it won’t open again for another thirty moons, and you’ll be stuck there until then.”
- “Thirty moons? Do I look like Luna to you? Standard time, Pocahontas, I don’t work with moon cycles.”
- “Roughly two and a half years.” Twilight points with her hoof again. “Now if you don’t mind, go through the mirror before I push you through. I’m interested to see what happens when a human travels to the other side.”
- “And what exactly is on the other side?”
- “Oh, it’s just a high school.” Twilight waves her hoof dismissively. “Nothing to worry about.”
- You take a few steps back and stare at the portal. “Right, now I’m having second thoughts. I thought it was some forbidden, toxic dimension filled with venomous demons and eldritch abominations out for my blood. Re-living high school is decidedly worse.”
- “Oh, just go in, you sissy. It might... change you, a little bit. Every species that goes through the portal undergoes some change. But, since the creatures in the other dimension are humanoid as well, I suspect the only change it’ll make is mess with your skin color.” She waves a dismissive hoof. “Don’t worry about it, though: any effects that befall you only apply in that dimension. As soon as you come back through the portal, you’ll be back to normal.”
- “Oh, good, wouldn’t want you to miss my pretty face.”
- “I’m about to mess up your pretty face with a nice buck to the teeth if you don’t get moving.”
- You salute and crack your neck, turning around to face the mirror. You eye it cautiously and take a few steps forward, watching your reflection stare back at you. You raise an eyebrow and wave to it, checking to see if there’s any difference between your movements and the reflection’s.
- “You’re sure this is a portal? You’re not just betting with someone to see if you can get me to walk face-first into a mirror?”
- “Go!”
- You throw your hands in the air as if she has a gun pointed at you. “Alright, don’t shoot, I’m going. But if that is what’s happening, I’m calling it now and you can’t laugh at me later.”
- Not sure if there’s breathable air in the space between dimensions, you take a deep breath to fill up your lungs and move forward. You brace your feet on the floor and slowly extend a hand out to the mirror. Instead of a solid, glass surface, like one would expect, your hand passes through it like liquid. The mirror shimmers and ripples outward like a puddle of melted silver as you let your arm sink in all the way to your elbow, trying to feel around for some kind of solid object on the other side. You can’t feel anything within the liquid, though, and decide that it’s time to commit.
- You spin around to give a final word to Twilight. “The salad bar better be pretty goddamn awesome. Like, with the mini baby corn cobs and everything.”
- “If the rest of your body isn’t through that portal in the next ten seconds I’m going to cut off your arm and replace it with a scrying orb for better results.”
- You give a final thumbs up and a friendly smile as you thrust the rest of your body into your reflection.
- The change is noticeably immediately. The instant your entire body enters the mirror, you start to feel a tugging sensation pulling you away. You open your eyes to see where you are, but are forced to shut them again as you’re blinded by a tunnel of flashing colorful lights. Like you’ve suddenly fallen into a river, the tugging sensation turns into a strong current, whisking you downstream with the liquid around you as you suppress the urge to scream. The tunnel doesn’t seem to twist or turn, but instead flow in a straight line, at speeds you’re having trouble imagining. Just as you’re not sure you’re starting to question how long you can hold your breath, you break free of the liquid and back in the open air.
- Unfortunately, you’re also feeling the merciless effects of physics. You don’t glide softly out of the portal, you’re thrown out: the sudden end to the current chucks you forward with its momentum, sending you skidding on the ground a few times before you can finally stop yourself with a roll. Luckily, nothing important was hurt, but you’re definitely going to find bruises tomorrow morning.
- You groan and roll onto your back, cracking open an eye to look around. You squint as the sun shines brightly above you, letting you know that you are outside and that it is daytime. Pushing yourself off of the ground, you let your eyes adjust to the light and try and get a look at your surroundings. Your eyes are first drawn to the massive monument to your right: a marble column shoots up into the sky, the side nearest to you polished so clean that you can see your reflection. A statue of a silver stallion, equally as large, adorns the top of the column, its head the only thing visible from your angle. As you gaze at it you realize that this must have been the portal you came through. Theirs is much bigger than the one in Equestria, it seems.
- Suddenly, your musings are interrupted as something enormous and blue lands directly in front of you. Luckily, you went to the bathroom before you left home, so your pants remain unsoiled. As your eyes adjust, you make out more colors than just the initial blue. Before you is a colossal blue and purple boot, with a white star sitting in front. You glance behind yourself to check, and sure enough, a matching boot seems to be about twenty feet away. With a deep breath to build your courage, you slowly drift your gaze upwards to try and discover the owner.
- You aren’t sure what to expect when you look up, to be honest, but an upskirt view was one of the last things on your list. Whoever the massive person is standing over you, they seem to have a strong attraction towards the color blue. Her boots, skirt and panties are all a similar purple and blue color scheme. As you take a longer look, you realize that her skin is pale blue as well: you had originally mistaken the color of her legs for high socks. You can’t help but stare at the cameltoe above you for several seconds, only being snapped out of your trance as you notice the enormous human-like creature begins to move again.
- Her boots kick up man-sized clouds of dust as she stomps forward, leaving you behind in a few strides. From behind her, you can make out some of her other features: matching the rest of her outfit, she wears what appears to be a blue hoodie, and blue hair that’s so pale it almost shines silver at certain angles. She holds a purple bag at her side, decorated with shimmering blue stars, which sways back and forth by her side as she struts forward.
- As you watch, you can’t imagine any living thing big enough to compete with her sheer size. But just as this thought crosses your mind, something even larger swoops by with alarming speed. A bicyclist, just as large as the blue woman, speeds out in front of her, startling her and causing her to fling her bag as she struggles for balance. Her bag lands with a heavy thud a short distance away from you, showering its contents in your direction. Papers, binders, and other school supplies, all massive in size, shower down on you. You manage to dodge some of the heavier things, including a cell phone that clatters to the pavement a few inches from you, but can’t escape from underneath the cloud of papers that slowly flutters down and blankets over you.
- You hear thundering, angry shouts as the woman says a few choice words to the now distant bicyclist. Though the papers aren’t heavy, even at their current state, their size makes it difficult to pull yourself out from under them. With a heave, you try and crawl your way free. Fingers searching, you feel something that seems sleek and metallic, with a small place where you can find a grip. With a grunt, you pull yourself out into the air.
- The item you’ve latched on to is a massive lipstick tube. Looking back to where you saw the incident with the bike, you find that the woman isn’t standing there anymore. As you start to wonder where she’s gone, an enormous shadow falls over you. You turn, ever so slowly, to find what you expected: the woman is crouching over the mess around you. Now with a perfect view of her face, you notice a few more of her features: the woman has huge, sparkling violet eyes, and a similarly colored star pinned in her hair.
- The girl, not so much a woman as you thought, frowns in irritation as she looks over the spilled contents of her bag. You open your mouth to call out to her, but it dawns on you you don’t really know what to say to a girl this large. Unfortunately, even if you did find the words, you don’t get the chance to say them. The girl lets out a sigh and places her arm on the ground in front of her, sliding it along the pavement towards the opening of the bag that she holds open with her other hand. With a quick shove, she pushes her things back into her bag, unknowingly shoving you in as well.
- The air is knocked out of your lungs as you get pushed underneath a pile of clutter. As you squeeze your way out from between a makeup kit and a notebook, your sense of gravity is suddenly thrown out of balance as the girl lifts her bag back over her shoulder. You lie back against a binder and breathe slowly, catching your breath, as you feel the bag sway back and forth as she struts confidently once more. As you gaze upwards at the shaft of light coming from the bag’s opening, one thought goes through your head: you have three days to get back to that portal.
