In Celestia's spirit realm, Derpy works as a builder of dreamscapes - she is an agent working for Princess Celestia and has been admiring her latest student for a long while now. On occasion, she gets to visit Ponyville or is sent there by Princess Celestia to fulfill a mission. She sees many things that others can not see themselves - not even Celestia.
 
On this one day, Derpy Hooves pays to visit Ponyville for the last day of Twilight Sparkle.
Once Twilight finds the answer to Starswirl's spell, her purpose in life comes to an end, and thus - she is whisked away to the Other World. Celestia is provided with more answers to her questions.
 
Once Twilight is taken by the locked-away magic she had inside herself to live out a dream in eternal, unknowing slumber, Derpy is there and waiting - ready to share in it.
 
At a later point in time, against the wishes of Princess Celestia, Derpy informs Twilight Sparkle where they really are and that the realm they are in is but containment for her thoughts - an interpretation of the world she once knew, one which Derpy had helped to form under the orders of Celestia in order to protect her from the pain and suffering that would come with finding the truth - but Derpy puts her faith in Twilight.
 
Together, they must find a way out of the dimension they are caught in - to return to the land of the living before true chaos can break loose across Equestria once more.
 
'Celestia always plans in advance.'
 
Starswirl was ignored and his mentor, Princess Celestia, never took the time to notice that he was in need of friendship, which in turn started his change to chaotic magic, cursing himself in to the hideous form of the mythical draconequus.
 
Celestia gave him a weakness; she set the bearers of the Elements of Harmony with the task of reforming Discord, which in turn led to the friendship he formed with Fluttershy, the Element of Kindness.
If Discord were to make a stand against Celestia for her actions, she'd convince the remaining ponies to turn against him, including Fluttershy, albeit having to face her inevitable resistance.
 
Back when Celestia cast the spell upon the Elements of Harmony prior to the redemption of Discord, it was a dual-purposed spell; it would prevent all possibility of Discord (Starswirl, her old student) becoming the replacement Element of Magic. The second purpose was to trap the possessor of The Element of Magic and to have them rest in eternal slumber as a means of preventing them from knowing pain and suffering. A life that keeps on living beyond death.
 
Whomever is the next student under her wing would fill in the roll as the new Element of Magic.
The cycle goes on as Celestia continues her search for answers.
 
Who will be next to replace her student?
Will Twilight and Derpy be able to stop the madness?
How can the reformed Discord, previously known as Starswirl the Bearded, and the remaining elements put a stop to the princess?
