- It was late into the night when Olaf found himself wandering the Castle Grounds. The soft crinkle of the snow falling from his own personal cloud only seemed to heighten the quiet and emptiness around him. Letting out a barely audible sigh, he tried to ignore the growing sadness as he wished for someone to play with.
- To think just a few hours ago he was overwhelmed with friends and celebration! The festivities for Elsa's return and the end of the Eternal Winter was the most fun Olaf had ever had in his whole life! Which, granted, only covered a few days, but he was still pretty sure the night was something special.
- But before he knew what was happening, the poor snowman had found himself alone again. Anna and Kristoff had shooed him away long before they left, giggling into each others ears with flushed faces as they drank glass after glass of that red stuff that Olaf thought tasted terrible. They were causing such a racket even their Queen seemed distracted by it! The snowman noticed that she had been drinking almost as much of the red liquid as his other two friends combined.
- When Anna announced that the couple was going to bed, Elsa almost choked on her drink! Olaf was surprised too, of course; the two hardly seemed tired, but maybe that's what the wink was for? In either case, they quickly ran off to Anna's room, and the Queen said she has "personal matters" to attend to in her chambers not long after. Olaf asked if he could help, of course, but she must not have heard him as she glided out of the room.
- And so Olaf found himself by himself as the celebrations slowly began to wind down. Within the hour, there wasn't a single friend to be found anywhere. He had wandered solo before finding Kristoff and Anna the first time, of course, but this felt different.
- "No one ever told me Summer would feel so lonely," he muttered to himself, "Maybe some fresh air will do me good!" The ides of green hills and vibrant flowers was still one that made his tiny little frozen heart sing with anticipation! He would have preferred doing so in the sunlight, surrounded by friends, of course, but a little sneak peek of the countryside couldn't hurt, right? Slowly, a smile began to form on his frozen face as he thought of all the wonderful things waiting for him in the Summer Night Outside!
- Except, how do you GET outside? The snowman remembered with sudden alarm that the main gates had been shut for the evening so that Elsa could build an ice rink in the courtyard. He hadn't been around long enough to learn any other ways. Could his adventure be over before it even began? He could always try waking one of his friends and ask for directions out, of course, but they all seemed so eager to get to bed, he'd feel guilty waking them up! The smile that had once been slowly melted away.
- But wait! The Stables! Olaf let out a small cheer as he remembered his other buddy, Sven, settling in for the night in the royal stables; of course there was a way out there! He'd have to be quiet to avoid waking the Reindeer, of course, but still, it'd be nothing but open Summer Skies past that point! With a hop, he went racing down the hall towards his latest adventure!
- Creeping around the door frame, Olaf could barely stifle an excited gasp as he saw the finish line: The outside world beckoned just beyond the doorway at the end of the Stable! Taking a second to muster up his reservations, he searched his surroundings and could scarcely believe his luck. By some miracle, it seemed as though all the horses had been taken elsewhere for the night, and Sven was the only resident. His heart almost bursting with excitement, the snowman began to tiptoe down the hall.
- Of course, snowmen were never built for stealth, so when Olaf eventually slipped on a pile of hay, he was probably the only one who would be surprised. Doing it directly beside Sven's pen, though, THAT was a special level of bad luck. Olaf held his breath, but the damage was done; Sven awoke from his slumber and gave the icy intruder a look somewhere between annoyance and curiosity.
- "Heeeeeyyyyy, buddy," Olaf drew out, collecting himself off the ground with all the dignity he could muster, "Didn't mean to wake you! You can go ahead back to sleep now; I was just seeing myself out!" But even as the words left his mouth, the Reindeer rose to his feet and began to trudge towards him.
- "Ha, if Kristoff were here, this would be when he'd start speaking for you, isn't it?" Olaf chuckled nervously, backing away from the approaching Reindeer, "Like, 'Olaf, why are you sneaking around in the Stables at this time of night?'."
- Sven nodded approvingly. He stopped to stand beside the tiny snowman, towering over him as he eyed Olaf up and down.
- "Then I'D say something like 'Oh, well, I was feeling pretty lonely up in the Castle, so I thought I'd go for a walk outside and enjoy the Summer Night', or something like that," Olaf continued, clearly getting caught up in his fictional conversation, "But then HE'D have YOU say 'Olaf, you know it's dangerous going out there by yourself! Why didn't you just wait until morning and go with everyone?', right?"
- Again, Sven gave a nod, this time rolling his eyes as he started to understand exactly where this was going. He positioned himself to sit back down between the snowman and the exit, but Olaf seemed too wrapped up in himself to notice.
- "Of course, that's when I'd say 'Well, I was going to, but I just felt so lonely that I needed to do SOMETHING to take my mind off it! And besides, maybe I don't want to wait for my friends! I mean, I do, but they left me all alone, and not a single one of them even said good night or see you tomorrow or anything! They barely seemed to know I was still there! And maybe it hurt, just a little.....but you wouldn't know anything about that.'," Olaf said, looking up at Sven with eyes that you'd be sure were melting from the water that was beginning to pool up. They caught Sven's, who had long stopped giving looks of agitation and instead only reflected kindness.
- "...B-but then Kristoff would have you say 'Olaf, of course I know about that. My own best buddy is spending the night up there in the castle, remember? It's the first night in as long as I can remember without having him by my side. I'm happy for him, but it still stings to know you're not your friends first choice. I know exactly how you feel.'," the snowman said, his hand stoking the Reindeer's fur as the two of them exchanged a bittersweet smile, "Heh, that Kristoff sure does has a habit of putting words in your mouth, doesn't he?"
- Sven rolled his eyes, but then locked them squarely on Olaf's. Without glancing away, he slowly inched his face closer towards the snowman's. Before he knew what was happening, Olaf was being nudged into Sven's pen by the Reindeer's insistent shoving.
- "You know, I was actually just about to leave," the snowman tried, only to be greeted another gentle yet forceful push from Sven's head. Olaf quickly found himself stuck in the middle of a pile of hay.
- "....Or I guess I could just stay here a little longer," Olaf sighed. He may have sounded disappointed, but Sven gave a satisfied smirk as he settled onto the floor, managing to wrap himself around the little snowman a bit. He gave one more tiny shove before giving an expectant look.
- "Hmm? Oh! Well, if Kristoff were here, which he's not, because he's back up in the castle with everyone else," Olaf sighed, "He'd probably have you say something else. Something like 'It's okay if the others aren't here, because real friends know that people aren't perfect, and that sometimes they get so caught up in everything else that's happening that they forget about what's happening to the other people around them. And that doesn't mean they love you any less.', or whatever."
- Olaf gave a slight smile as he looked at the friend beside him. Sven returned the gesture tenfold with a wild, Reindeer grin.
- "....and he'd probably also have you say 'As long as we're with each other, we're still with a friend, aren't we?'," Olaf continued, turning around to lie against his pal. If Sven noticed the cold of his snow, he definitely didn't show it. "To which I'd say 'Yeah, I guess we are.'."
- The reindeer nodded whole heartedly before settling down to resume his sleep. Olaf followed his lead, burying his face into the warm fur. It felt just like a hug.
- "What do you say you and I go exploring the Summer hills tomorrow, buddy?" Sven looked up, grinned and licked Olaf's carrot nose.
- "Yeah, I love you too."
