  1. >Day 320 in Canterlot
  2. >The sun is starting its great arc through the sky
  3. >Get up
  4. >Spend a little time making breakfast for once
  5. >You've got time and besides, you're a Court Adviser now
  6. >You can afford to be late once in a while
  7. >Eat your breakfast and head out the door
  8. >Thankfully there haven't been any incidents since the parasprite scare in Fillydelphia last month
  9. >You've been doing more relaxed work since then; talking to delegates mostly, some internal affairs
  10. >You look at the sky as you walk to the offices
  11. >...oh fuck
  12. >A pillar of smoke is rising from the direction of the Gardens
  13. >The messenger stone in your pocket starts buzzing like crazy
  14. >Take it out and read the scroll that appears from it
  15. >Oh good, the scroll says that Canterlot isn't on fire
  16. >The smoke is just from a sleeping dragon
  17. >Good
  18. >Close call
  19. >...
  20. >Wait...
  21. >You look at the scroll again
  22. >”sleeping dragon”
  23. >Yep
  24. >That's what it says...
  25. >Fuck
  26. 1/x
  27.
  28. >Garnet Locket and Crystalbright are sitting in their offices when you rush by
  29. >”Hey Anon, what's the rush?” Garnet pokes her head out of her door
  30. Can't talk right now, Garnet, I've got something I need to handle right now
  31. >You speed-walk through the offices to the conference rooms
  32. >Like motherfucking deja-vu, it's Celestia and Luna with a couple other Advisers
  33. >This has long day smeared all over it
  34. >”Thank you all for coming on such short notice.” Celestia begins
  35. >”As I stated in my letters, we've received reports of a dragon sleeping in the mountains near Ponyville”
  36. >The Advisers start talking with one another
  37. >”In response, I've sent my student Twilight Sparkle to handle the situation peaceably”
  38. >What
  39. >”Of course, should she fail to move the dragon someplace else, we'll be forced to take more... drastic measures”
  40. >The Princess's tone drops to an unsettling grimness
  41. >Twilight had better know what she's doing
  42. >An Adviser speaks up
  43. >”How can we entrust this to a filly?”
  44. >Celestia looks around the room
  45. >No one looks sure about this
  46. >”Twilight Sparkle will come through. However, we also have to plan for a worst-case scenario”
  47. >She opens the floor up for debate
  48. 2/x
  49.
  50. >The Advisers talk for the next hour before deciding that, should Twilight Sparkle fail, a back-up plan will begin
  51. >You all agree that the best course of action in that case is to send a brigade of unicorns out to subdue and transport the dragon to a different location
  52. >The dragon will no doubt be enraged, which would put the ponies on the team in danger as well as incur the possible wrath of the dragons as a whole
  53. >You figure that Equestria is probably not well-suited for fighting an army of dragons...
  54. >However, there won't be much choice should Twilight fail
  55. >100 years of smoke over Equestria is not ideal for a kingdom whose greatest resource is agriculture
  56. >The meeting concludes and you head back to your office
  57. >Crystalbright sticks her head out of her office door
  58. >”Hey Anon, how'd your meeting go?”
  59. It went, I guess. The Princess sent Twilight to deal with the dragon. We just had to come up with a back-up plan
  60. >”Ah, let me know when you need those papers” You've noticed her tone towards you get a lot more businesslike in the past weeks
  61. >It's your own fault, you haven't been spending nearly as much time her as you used to
  62. >You've only been hanging out with her when it's you, Crystalbright, and Garnet together
  63. >There just hasn't been that much time to spend with only one of your bros, between work and Octavia...
  64. Hey Crystalbright?
  65. >She pokes her head out again
  66. >”Yeah?”
  67. You want to come by later tonight for booze and movies?
  68. >She perks up. You haven't done this with your bro in a while and it shows
  69. >”If you change it up to movies and booze, I'm in”
  70. >Good
  71. 3/x
  72.
  73. >Your thoughts drift back to Octavia after you go back to your office
  74. >A month ago you had that dinner with her
  75. >Things sort of just happened after that
  76. >You were an item before you knew it
  77. >Crystalbright congratulated you, but it felt half-hearted
  78. >Garnet went crazy with excitement when you told her
  79. >An hour of questions later and she was still bouncing off the walls
  80. >Apparently inter-species relations, while uncommon, are kosher here
  81. >You shudder involuntarily
  82. >As much as you enjoy spending time with Octavia...
  83. >As many feels as come up when you spend time with Octavia...
  84. >You don't like the idea of...well...
  85. >Guh, you can't even carry the notion
  86. >Oh well. You'll figure that problem out when you come to it
  87. >...And hopefully that'll be a while...
  88. >...A long while...
  89. >...Shit...
  90. 4/x
  91. >You put your thoughts back to your job
  92. >No time to think about shit like this
  93. >The rest of the day is spent worrying
  94. >Worrying about the dragon
  95. >Worrying about Octavia and you
  96. >Worrying about how much you're worrying
  97. >5 o'clock can't come fast enough
  98. >You're out the door as soon as the clock chimes
  99. >You head home to get dinner
  100. >At least your bro Crystalbright's coming over tonight
  101. >Movies and booze will put your mind at ease
  102. >You eat your food and look through your movie collection
  103. >8 o'clock you hear a knock at the door
  104. >Crystalbright comes in with a bag of Applejack Daniels bottles
  105. >”Let's do this!” She looks enthusiastic
  106. >You're glad
  107. >You were beginning to think you'd fucked up somehow
  108. >The two of you vault over the back of the couch and throw a movie on the TV
  109. >Crystalbright opens the first bottle of Applejack Daniels
  110. >The night is on
  111. >And you are gonna get DRUNK
  112. 5/x
  113.
  114. >By the time the second movie is over the fourth bottle is empty
  115. >”Do you really like Octavia?”
  116. >Crystalbright's voice is quiet
  117. >Your drunk ass barely hears her
  118. >She looks at you as the credits roll by
  119. >”Anon? Do you really like Octavia?”
  120. >Where's this coming from?
  121. >”Hey! I'm asking you something, Anon!”
  122. What? Yeah, of course I do.
  123. >You don't even need to think about it
  124. >Dat pone
  125. >You see Crystalbright look down at the floor
  126. She's...my special somep0ny
  127. >Crystalbright winces like you've cut her with a knife
  128. >She slowly gets down off the couch and starts walking to the door
  129. >”It's getting late...I should go...”
  130. >You look at the clock
  131. >It's only 11...
  132. >You turn around as the door closes
  133. >Well there goes your buzz
  134. >Now you KNOW you fucked up
  135. >You look over at the bottles of booze left in the bag
  136. >'Later, old friends. We have work tomorrow'
  137. >You go to bed, disheartened
  138. 6/x
  139.
  140. >Crystalbright doesn't come to work the next day
  141. >Garnet says she came down with something
  142. >You know she's avoiding running into you
  143. >You slog through the day unenthusiastically until deciding to just leave around 3
  144. >Garnet looks at you, concerned, but you assure her that you're fine
  145. >Crystalbright's behavior doesn't make sense to you at all
  146. >She's supposed to be your bro
  147. >Shouldn't she be happy for you?
  148. >Garnet was ecstatic when she heard the news
  149. >Aquamarine gave you a high-hoof the second you mentioned it
  150. >But Crystalbright?
  151. >She barely managed to look up at you when you told the two of them about Octavia
  152. >What was her problem?
  153. >Walking down the street it hits you
  154. >oh
  155. >OH
  156. >FUCK
  157. >You're an idiot
  158. >Your oblivious ass didn't see the reasons for any of that
  159. >”She's in love with you”
  160. >You whip around to see Garnet friggin' Locket standing behind you with a deadpan look on her face
  161. How did- but you were- wait. You KNEW?
  162. >”Anon, I've been that pony's best friend since we got our cutie marks. I knew longer than SHE did.”
  163. >She sure is perceptive behind that facade of fan-madness and bubbly optimism
  164. 7/x
  165.
  166. >Garnet looks at you with knowing eyes
  167. So what am I supposed to do now?
  168. >You're good in a crisis, but can't handle THIS? The hell is the matter with you?
  169. >'Shut up, Brain. Not the time'
  170. >She looks at you like you're stupid, which, to be fair, you are right now
  171. >”You gotta follow how you feel, Anon”
  172. >Great. Follow your heart? That's not cliché in the slightest
  173. >You think about your bro. You think about staying up late watching movies and getting drunk
  174. >You think about how she helped you save Canterlot from certain chaos
  175. >Your bro means everything to you
  176. >But your heart's not in it
  177. >She's your bro. Nothing more, nothing less
  178. >But Octavia...
  179. >datdamnfeel.gif
  180. >You can't shake it
  181. >You look at Garnet after a minute
  182. >She nods and walks away without saying a word
  183. >She understands. Doesn't hold it against you
  184. >You're not sure you'll be able to say the same for Crystalbright
  185. >Look up at the sky
  186. >Decide to get a late lunch at the cafe
  187. >Gotta get your mind off this
  188. 8/x
  189.
  190. >You take a seat at the counter and order your food
  191. >'Any chance you'll let me do this later, Brain?'
  192. >LOL nope. You fucked up with Crystalbright and you're fucked up with Octavia
  193. >'Dammit, you're a dick, Brain'
  194. >You're welcome
  195. >'Fuck you'
  196. >Your food comes out as you're mulling over the last couple days
  197. >When did your life turn back into high school?
  198. >Now one of your best friends is on the drama-train to shitsville
  199. >”Something wrong, Anon?”
  200. >It's Aquamarine.
  201. >Confound these ponies, they show up out of nowhere
  202. >”Garnet said you'd be here”
  203. I figured. I guess you heard then?
  204. >”About Crystalbright? Yeah, Garnet brought me up to speed.”
  205. >The turquoise pony sits in silence for a second
  206. >”So what are you gonna do?”
  207. >That's a good question.
  208. >”You can't just avoid each other forever,  Anon. Some point you're gonna have to talk about it”
  209. I know. I know how Crystalbright feels, but-
  210. >”But you've got to think about Octavia. Not to mention YOUR feelings”
  211. >Your feelings
  212. >She's right, you know. As much as it's going to hurt Crystalbright, you've got to go with your feels
  213. >And your feels are all Octavia
  214. 9/x
  215.
  216. >You've made your choice. This isn't some movie, it's real life
  217. >You can't just throw your feelings for Octavia out when your best friend drops her own on you
  218. >”We get it, Anon.” She puts her hoof on your shoulder
  219. >”But you're gonna have to confront this with Crystalbright at some point”
  220. I will, Aqua.
  221. >You will
  222. >Well? You gonna wait around or are you doing this now?
  223. >'Shut up, Brain'
  224. >Drop your money on the counter and get up
  225. >”She's at her house”
  226. Got it
  227. >You start out the door
  228. Oh, and Aqua?
  229. >”Yeah?”
  230. Thanks
  231. >You walk to Crystalbright's house determined to set things right
  232. >Your friends have always been there for you
  233. >They helped you when you needed them most
  234. >Time to return the favor, at least to one of them
  235. 10/x
  236.
  237. >As you make your way to your friend's house your mind sets to thinking about what's happened
  238. >You've known Crystalbright and the others for almost a whole year now
  239. >They were the first ponies to accept you after Celestia put you on Emerald's team
  240. >Your first friends in Equestria
  241. >You thought you had a good thing going
  242. >Looking back, it's obvious
  243. >The late night movies, the teasing comments, the “always there for you” attitude
  244. >Your stupid ass just didn't see it
  245. >Didn't want to see it
  246. >So much for that “insight” Celestia always said you possessed
  247. >It couldn't have helped that you so readily started seeing Octavia
  248. >No wonder her congratulations were so unenthusiastic
  249. >Dammit, you're an asshole for not seeing it earlier!
  250. >But it's too late now
  251. >You're not about to break it off with Octavia
  252. >Just have to talk to Crystalbright and get everything out in the open
  253. >Then you can move past this and get on with your life
  254. >...hopefully
  255. 11/x
  256.
  257. >Crystalbright doesn't answer the door the first time you knock
  258. >You just hear shuffling until you knock again
  259. >The door opens slowly
  260. >Crystalbright looks like she's been up all night
  261. >Her eyes go wide when she sees you
  262. >”A-anon?”
  263. Mind if I come in?
  264. >She nods silently as she opens the door the rest of the way
  265. >You walk in and look around the room
  266. >”Was there something you wanted, Anon?”
  267. >Ok, showtime, Anon
  268. >Just say what you were going to say on the way over here
  269. >Relax, and for the love of Celestia don't screw this up
  270. I want to know how you feel about me
  271. >You could cut the tension with  a knife
  272. >It takes Crystalbright a second to respond
  273. >”I- what-” She sighs
  274. >”I guess it's out in the open now, huh?”
  275. >She walks over to a chair and takes a seat
  276. Garnet and Aquamarine put it together for me
  277. >She looks down
  278. I'm sorry I didn't see it earlier, Crystalbright, if I'd known...
  279. >You look at her. She's looking at you with hopeful eyes
  280. >Hoping against hope. You can see that much
  281. ...If I'd known your feelings earlier things might have been different
  282. >Her face falls as you go on
  283. But I just can't...
  284. >Hope you're ready to dig yourself out of this hole
  285. 12/x
  286.
  287. >Your friend has such a pained expression on her face
  288. >You're just confirming what you both know, but that can't make it hurt less to hear
  289. >The two of you talk for a solid hour
  290. >When you've finished you get up to leave
  291. >Best not stick around too long; she'll need time...
  292. >As you walk to the door you hear her ask
  293. >”Anon... If it WERE different, if I'd told you earlier...do you think...”
  294. Crystalbright...we both know I can't give you an answer to that
  295. >You leave the house
  296. >As you close the door you hear Crystalbright begin softly sobbing
  297. >That's not going to make the walk home any easier...
  298. >You start thinking about Octavia again
  299. >Did you do the right thing?
  300. >Of course you did
  301. >What are you even asking?
  302. >Octavia means too much...
  303. >Your heart knots thinking about it
  304. >Wait...
  305. >Access feels.rar
  306. >Analyzing files...
  307. >You're in love with Octavia aren't you
  308. >Your jimmies are rustled
  309. 13/x
  310.
  311. >You feel a sudden motivation
  312. >Start walking purposefully to Octavia's house
  313. >It's 5 o'clock, so she'll be getting out of her practice session about now
  314. >The streets seem a blur to you as you move through them
  315. >You've got your mind focused on one thing only
  316. >Getting to Octavia before your courage wears off
  317. >You come up to her house as she's walking there herself
  318. Octavia!
  319. >She turns, surprised to hear your yelling
  320. >”Anon? What are you doing here? Don't you have wor-
  321. >She cuts herself off as you scoop her up from the ground
  322. >The gray pony looks at you in confusion as her face turns red
  323. >You look her right in her lavender eyes as you bring her closer to you
  324. I love you
  325. >Ok, NOW her face is red
  326. >”Wh-where's this coming from?”
  327. >Were it not for that smile on her face you'd be worried. But you can see how happy Octavia is right now
  328. I got to some thinking today is all. Made me realize how much you mean to me
  329. >She closes her eyes, still smiling in your arms
  330. >”...I love you too, Anon”
  331. >You stand there holding Octavia in your arms for a while in contented silence
  332. >Maybe now everything will be okay?
  333. End
