Drexel's entire dragon line was killed off by the returned King Sombra, leaving only young Drexel alive. Swearing revenge on on the dark King, Drexel eventually found the returned Crystal Empire. There he swore fealty to the new Crystal Princess when he learned of Sombra's defeat by one of his own dragonkin Spike. Refusing to believe that Sombra was truly defeated, he vowed to spread the love of the Crystal Princess wherever it might wane in the shadows.
