CHAPTER 8: BEGINNINGS OF THE STARSWIRL BRIGADE PART 2

"A Stand, Shining Armor, is a psychic manifestation of its user's will. Yours seems to have taken the form of this knight."
>"So, what, it's like a... superpower?"
"More or less. And you seem to have quite an... imposing Stand if I do say so myself."
>"What can this thing do anyways?"
"Anything you will it to, really."
>"Really?"
"Yes. Try moving it around."
>Shining gives a grunt as he struggles to control his Stand
>At some point however, it finally moves
>Shining smiles at this
>"Sweet! I think I'm starting to get it!"
"You might need a bit more practice but you certainly seem to be enjoying yourself."
>Shining is indeed enjoying himself, so much so that he has stopped paying attention to you

"Long story short, we have reason to believe someone is creating new Stand users in an attempt to bring chaos to Equestria."

"Imagine somepony who happened to be quite morally reprehensible getting a Stand."
>"That doesn't seem too bad. What could a Stand possibly do in th-"
"Barring a few basic rules and depending on the user, quite literally anything."
>Shining gives an incredulous look
>"Anything?"
"Well, my Stand Dark Side of the Moon can peer into a person's soul and let me understand their deepest fears, regrets, and so on."
>"What?"
>You bring DSOTM out
>For 1000 years you used this Stand to help ponies in their dreams with problems they couldn't face in the waking world
>And now you were going to use it to physically assault the captain of your guard
>How strong was this thing again?
"Alright Shining, how about we check your Stand's combat capabilities?"
>"Sorry what?"
>You throw a slow punch with your Stand
>Shining's Stand jumps to his aid, blocking just as it would hit, deflecting the punch to the wall behind you
>A hole forms in that wall
>Right. That strong.
>"Could you please NOT attack me again?!"
"I apologize. I was simply testing your Stand a bit."
>"Well could you NOT?"
"Of course, it won't happen again."
>You may be curious of his Stand's capabilities, but you wouldn't make him go sleepless wondering when his next 'test' was going to occur
>"So now that THAT'S over, how do you expect me to find a group of guards that..."
>He grabs the old promotional poster from your bed
>"...Have the mettle to protect Equus from that which your local vampony slayer, beast hunter, exorcist or shaman can't."
>He turns to you
>"How do you expect me to find THAT in a week?"
"I don't."
>"What?"
"While I would prefer haste in this sort of situation, I understand that it might not be easy. To be perfectly honest, I'm just improvising as I go. I'm not sure what exactly would be best in this situation."
>"So... the best of the best, or something like that?"
"That will have to do for now."
>Shining ponders for a moment
>"I can think of a few off the top of my head, but I'll need to compile a list. It might take a while."
"As soon as you can finish, bring it to me. I'll examine them personally."
>"Could you please not stab them either?"
"I... can't promise anything."
>It felt weird knowing you might have to do that to some of them, but for the sake of Equestria, if not Equus' security, some sacrifices had to be made
"Oh, also..."
"Do you have a name for your Stand?"
>"What?"
"Stand users generally name their Stands. I was just wondering if you'd bother doing so yourself."
>"Well, that would be better than just calling it Stand I suppose."
>He takes a minute to think before deciding on an answer
>"?CRY THUNDER?!"
>"OOORRRAAAAA!"
>The Stand unsheathes a previously unseen longsword from its side and vertically slices down on your Stand
>DSOTM catches it before the blow connects
>It's slow to be sure, but DAMN is it powerful
>That might have cleaved straight through had you not caught the blade
>"That was for trying to hit me a few seconds ago."
>Yeah, you kind of deserved that
>"So, is there any way I can find more information on Stands? I know next to nothing as it is."
"Unfortunately, not right now. My sister is currently looking around for Starswirl's-"
 
>"-Notes, where did he put those-AH! Got them!"
>Celestia appears from the other room, a pile of papers floating in front of her
>"Here's everything Starswirl had on his research into Stands. I hope it helps you."
>Looking at the notes, you find they are quite comprehensive
>You were gonna need some time to get through all this
>Basic Stand rules, general Stand types, different Stands he had seen throughout his time
>Different theories on how one can gain and change their Stand, including through...

>No real mention of them, outside a Cliff notes explanation meant to relate to how they can improve one's Stand
"Celestia, what's Hamon and Spin?"
>"Haven't heard those in a while. Why do you ask?"
"I was looking through his notes and there was mention of them."
>"Well, Hamon is, in layman's terms, the power of the sun. It uses the beat of the user's blood to generate ripples that are made from the sun's light, which is why it's also called the Ripple."
>You had to admit, this caught your interest
>A whole martial art dedicated to sunlight huh?
"I bet you know quite a bit about this, huh?"
>"I'll admit I dabbled in it quite a bit, but I fear I wouldn't be the best teacher, considering I have a country to run..."
>She bows her head
>"...And the last time I used it was on... Starswirl."
>Ooooh no, she's getting sad, time to change the subject
"Well, what about the Spin? Did you ever learn that?"
>"Ah yes, Spin. If I'm correct, it's a special manner of spinning or launching a spherical object in order to utilize the Magnus Effect. Generally, users of spin can enhance their throws with reference to the Golden Rectangle."
>Hmm. That sounds interesting as well.
>Utilizing rotation as a means of attack

>Hmmmm
>But if you were going to evaluate the effectiveness of these abilities, you'd need some more than just some minor notes
>"You need more than some minor notes in order to work with these, am I right?"

>"I don't have the time to teach you either, especially considering I only know one of them, buuuuut..."
>She goes into one of the other rooms again and goes through some piles of... whatever is in there

>"Whilst I can't help you directly, I'm sure Starswirl can."
>You take the book and ball with a twinkle in your eye
>"I had seen Starswirl use the Spin once before, so I guess I can show you how. Forgive me if I'm not the most skilled at this."

>You got to see Starswirl the Bearded's workshop and you get to learn two new martial arts!

>Maybe you could even help in a fight against any enemy Stand users!
>Speaking of which...
"How long do you think it'll take before things really hit the fan?"
>"Well, given how little we know, I can't say at this point. I'm sure everything is fine right now though."
 
MEANWHILE, NEAR THE EVERFREE FOREST
 
"STAY WITH TRIXIE STARLIGHT! YOU'LL BE FINE, TRIXIE JUST NEEDS YOU TO KEEP TALKING!"
