- > "Alright, then. Any questions?"
- "I have a question!" says the pink pony.
- "About the mission, Pinkie," adds Twilight.
- "Oh that? Nevermind! I'm good."
- > "Good. Synchronize your watches, and move out!"
- "Yes, sir! Human, sir!"
- "Let's move out! Yeehaw!"
- "O-Okay. If you don't mind, that is."
- "I better not chip a hoof this time!"
- > We make a break for the back gate.
- > No sign of campus security.
- > I smile and pull out a key.
- "Huh? Where did you get that?" inquires Twilight.
- > "Just a little souvenir from the university."
- > I unlock the back gate and push it open.
- "No turning back now," whispers Applejack "Right, partner?"
- > I nod at her solemnly.
- > "Tonight is the night. Let's go out, with a bang!"
- ---
- > We position ourselves on the field behind the science building.
- > There, we begin to set up our equipment.
- > "Who wants to go first?" I ask.
- "I do!" cries Rainbow. "This is going to be so awesome!"
- > "Alright, but be careful."
- > She nods and lights her rocket.
- > It shoots up high in the air before exploding,
- > And as planned, her cloud-lightning cutie mark fills the sky.
- "Wow," says Fluttershy. "That's so pretty!"
- "Let's go next!" cries Pinkie excitedly.
- > The two light their rockets at the same time.
- > They both explode in the air, filling the sky with balloons and butterflies.
- "Now that is gonna be tough to beat," says the orange pony.
- "Oh Applejack," laughs Rarity. "You make it sound as if it's going to be hard."
- > She motions for Applejack to light her rocket first.
- > It shoots up and fills the sky with dozens of bright red apples.
- > Then, Rarity aims hers at the same spot and fires.
- > Hers fills the air with tiny diamonds, making the apples look like rubies in the sky.
- "Wow, girls!" says Twilight "That looks even better than I imagined!"
- > I nudge the purple pony and wink.
- > She smiles and lights her rocket. It explodes with a blinding flash.
- > Then, a large pink star surrounded by five white ones lights up the sky.
- > It stays there for a few minutes, like a new constellation, before vanishing.
- ---
- > "That was beautiful, girls. Just, beautiful!"
- "But you haven't fired yours yet," says Twilight. "Want me to help?"
- > I shake my head as I pull out a simple looking rocket from a box.
- > "No, Twilight. This is something that I have to do myself."
- "Oh, alright."
- > The six ponies watch with interest as I light up my rocket.
- > It shoots up into the air and explodes into a simple shape in the air.
- > That of a single question mark. It isn't flashy or brilliant. Certainly not unique.
- "A question mark?" says Applejack. "I don't get it."
- "Why something so plain?" asks Rarity.
- > "You'll see," I say with a small smile.
- > Sure enough, a second rocket fires from a distance.
- > It explodes into the same shape, but in a different color
- "Ooo! Is that like some kind of secret code, or something?" asks Pinkie.
- > Then, several dozen more rockets fire into the air.
- > From different places around the city. From beyond the city. And even further.
- > The sky is filled with question marks of all sizes and colors.
- > Each one the same shape, yet slightly unique.
- "Oh wow!" says Fluttershy. "Do you know all those people?"
- > "Nope. I have no idea who they are. Most of us have never even met."
- > With a small smile, I look up at the sky.
- > "But each one of them is a comrade. And each one of them is a friend."
- ---
- > I smile at the girls as the enjoy this human celebration.
- > We stay there, watching the fireworks a little longer.
- > That is, until we are inevitably interrupted.
- "STOP RIGHT THERE! CRIMINAL SCUM!"
- > Oh shit! Campus security!
- > The ponies look at me, confused.
- > I quickly motion for them to follow,
- > And we make a mad dash for the exit.
- "Hey! Why are we running?" asks Twilight.
- > "So we don't get caught," I explain.
- "Don't get caught?" she repeats.
- > "What we just did was sort of... illegal."
- "Illegal!?" cries Applejack. "What the hay were you thinking?"
- "I'd say that he wasn't thinking at all," says Rarity.
- > "It's tradition," I add. "Sort of, anyway."
- "Can we talk about this later?" cries Fluttershy. "T-That is, if you don't mind..."
- "Last one home is a government lab experiment!" cries Pinkie.
- > I laugh heartily as the seven of us flee from the authorities.
- > Fireworks continue firing into the air, welcoming us into the new year.
- > "Happy New Year, Everyone!"
