  1. >The sun coming in through the window feels warm on your face
  2. >You don't especially want to get up yet, but something at the back of your mind is nagging at you
  3. >Today was an important day, but you don't remember why
  4. >A crash from downstairs has you groaning into your pillow
  5. "Fine, dammit, I'm up."
  6. >Before you have a chance to put your words into action, however, two shapes dart through your door
  7. >Oh god. You remember why today was important
  8. >You are suddenly mob rushed by two small ponies
  9. >"First day of school! First day of school!"
  10. >They're bouncing on you Anon
  11. >It hurts your fragile organs
  12. "Okay, okay!"
  13. >You scoop them up under your arms and leap out of bed
  14. >Depositing them on the floor you size them up
  15. >Pumpkin needs a mane cut
  16. "So. Looking forward to your first day of... what was it? Community service?"
  17. >Pound looks up at you earnestly
  18. >"School, Anon. It's the first day of school"
  19. >You wave your hand dismissively
  20. "Pshha. You don't need school. I never went to school, and look how I-"
  21. >You all stop as a delicious aroma fills the room
  22.
  23. >It's pancakes
  24. >You grab the ponies by the shoulders
  25. >Biting you lower lip to stop the tears, you look down at them and open your mouth. All that comes out is a cracked whimper
  26. >"We know, Anon. You love pancakes"
  27. >You gesture at the door and cover your face
  28. >Pumpkin and Pound look at each other. They roll their eyes and go downstairs for breakfast
  29. >After they leave, you chuckle quietly to yourself and get ready for the day
  30. >Downstairs, you find everyone already at the table
  31. >Pinkie looks up from her plate
  32. >"Saved you some, Anon"
  33. >Pound is banging his hooves on the table with impatience
  34. >Looks like they've both finished eating
  35. >"Hurry up Anon!"
  36. >Pumpkin looks worried
  37. >"We'll be late!"
  38. >You slow down purposefully, eating the pancakes with the deliberation of a brain surgeon cutting up someones grey matter
  39. >The twins look appalled
  40. >"ANON!"
  41. >They whine
  42. >You laugh
  43. "Nearly done"
  44. >Pinkie laughs too
  45.
  46. >Finally you've eaten the last morsel. The twins waste no time in grabbing their bags and running for the door
  47. "Hey! Wait for me!"
  48. >You try to pile the plates up by the sink, but Pinkie stops you
  49. >"Go. I can deal with this"
  50. >You smile before rushing after the twins
  51. >Pinkie giggles to herself and sighs
  52. >A sigh of contentment
  53. >She was happy here
  54. >And here she would remain
  55. >With Anon
  56. >You sprint down the street after the twins
  57. "Hey! Come back! We're supposed to be walking together! That's the point!"
  58. >They just turn and laugh
  59. >Thankfully, they're still young, and you catch up to them with ease
  60. >Oh look, you've made it to school
  61. >You wave to the teacher, a Miss Cheerilee
  62. >She waves back from the doorway
  63. >"Anon! Stop embarrassing us!"
  64. >You pull you hand back down
  65. "Sorry"
  66. >Pound runs off to the swing set
  67. "I'll be back afterwards to pick you up!"
  68. >"Yeah, whatever!"
  69. >He smiles back at you
  70. "Damn you, child! Damn you!"
  71. >You call back in your best bourgeois voice
  72. >You feel a sudden weight on your leg
  73. >It's Pumpkin
  74. >She's got ahold of it pretty tight
  75. >You kneel down
  76. "What's up?"
  77. >She barely makes eye contact with you
  78. >"What if I don't like it? What if I don't make any friends?"
  79. >It seems like all the confidence belonged to her brother
  80. >You hug her
  81. "Who wouldn't want to be friends with you? You'll do great, I promise."
  82. >She doesn't look convinced
  83. >You shrug
  84. "If you stay all day, I'll bring you some candy when I come to pick you up, m'kay?"
  85. >She nods, smiling
  86. "Now scoot"
  87. >She runs up to join her brother
  88. >As you leave, you look back. They're both talking and playing with the other young ponies
  89. >You smile, then walk away
  90.
  91. >On your way back you wander almost aimlessly through town. You've got some time to kill
  92. >Stopping by the flower shop, you pick up a bouquet of flowers
  93. >You hold them over your shoulder, enjoying the summers day
  94. >All through town you walk, until you reach the gate
  95. >You must have walked through here dozens of times
  96. >You could do it blindfold
  97. >All the way to the headstones
  98. >You remove the dead flowers and replace them with the ones you bought
  99. >You sit down cross legged
  100. "The flowers were getting old so I bought some new ones.
  101.  It was the first day of school today. Just like I said it would go, Pound rushed in.
  102.  Pumpkin needed a little coaxing, but she made it there in the end.
  103.  Me and Pinkie are taking good care of the house.
  104.  And of each other."
  105. >You laugh. Then your smile turns sad
  106. "I miss you both. Every day."
  107. >You look at the old watch on your wrist
  108. "Better get going. I'll be back to tell you how their day went."
  109. >You walk out of the cemetery
  110. >Back to the life you wouldn't trade for the world
