  1. CHAPTER 28
  2.
  3. >The big guy does as he’s told.
  4. >The three of them back away slightly, mouths shut.
  5. >Red Hood over here walks closer to you.
  6. >Is he supposed to be their leader?
  7. >If he is, he’s a dick.
  8. >You’re not a monkey.
  9. >He circles around you.
  10. >Inspecting every last detail.
  11. >Even running a claw down your face, lightly grazing your neck.
  12. >”Anonymous, huh?”
  13. >He chortles a bit.
  14. >You don’t know what he finds so funny.
  15. >”I’m surprised.”
  16. “About?”
  17. >”You’re useless.”
  18. >What?
  19. “Excuse me?”
  20. >He chuckles to himself.
  21. >”Just look at you. No claws. Soft skin. Really thin. Probably as weak as a twig.”
  22. >Your gaze at him intensifies.
  23. >”You have no redeeming features. You’re about as useless as your name suggests. Anonymous… one whose identity is hidden from the masses, so you can blend into your kind.”
  24. >You’re speechless.
  25. >”I wonder… are all hairless monkeys as useless as you?”
  26. >He’s got some nerve…
  27.
  28. >If all of these dogs here are as ill-mannered as Red Hood here, you don’t think you want their help.
  29. “... well, if I’m as useless as you say I am, you could always let me go? I can get out of your hair. You don't want me to waste your precious time, time that you could be diggi-”
  30. >Red Hood laughs.
  31. >”Nah.”
  32. >What'd he just say?
  33. >He just called you useless.
  34. >He insulted your namesake for crying out loud.
  35. >”You said you were held captive by the bugs. You’re worth something to them.”
  36. >Shit.
  37. >”We’re Diamond Dogs. We keep everything of value for ourselves. So tell me little Anony-useless… why on Earth are you coveted by the changelings?”
  38.
  39. “I-... How do I know you won’t just sell me out to the changelings?”
  40. >”Well, whaddya know? Girl’s got some brains.”
  41. >Red Hood chuckles to himself.
  42. >”You don’t. We might.”
  43. >At least he’s being honest.
  44. “I can’t tell you then. Not yet.”
  45. >Red Hood slides his hood down, revealing his face.
  46. >You stare at him.
  47. >He doesn’t have any fur at all.
  48. >You can see every detail in his face.
  49. >”Fine. Guess you’re stuck down here with us.”
  50. >He leans in close to you.
  51. >“Just know this. When we found out what sort of secret you’re hiding from us - and we will find out, no doubts about it.”
  52. >He pokes at your chest with an outstretched claw.
  53. >“We will want whatever... it... is.”
  54. >You blink.
  55. >He’s trying to intimidate you.
  56. >The idea of dogs wanting your love.
  57. >It’s… cutesy.
  58. >You bring a hand to your face to prevent yourself from laughing.
  59.
  60. “Pfft, ha… okay.”
  61. >You can’t stop thinking about it.
  62. >You imagine cute little puppies crowding around your legs, yipping for your attention and love-oh fuck it.
  63. >You burst out laughing.
  64. >They’re all wearing confused looks on their faces.
  65. >”Wha-”
  66. >You hold up a hand, silencing them.
  67. >Get the laughs out of your system Anon.
  68. >After a few deep breaths, you finally settle down.
  69. “Sorry ‘bout that. So, what are all your names then?”
  70. >Big Dog that grabbed you is Fido, Middle Guy is Rover, Small Dog is Spot.
  71. >You look at Red Hood.
  72. “What, you’re too good to tell me your name?”
  73. >”It’s Stardust.”
  74. >You blink.
  75. “Stardust?”
  76. >He rolls his eyes and looks off to the side.
  77. >”Dusty. Just call me Dusty.”
  78.
  79. “Okay Star...”
  80. >You add emphasis on that last part, much to his chagrin.
  81. “So, what do you want me to do? You want me to go somewhere or…”
  82. >Fido grunts.
  83. >”Dusty, we’re calling it a day.”
  84. >He nods.
  85. >”Let’s get some sleep.”
  86. >The dogs start walking down the tunnels.
  87. >You look at Stardust.
  88. >”Follow me.”
  89. >You realize as you walk through the caves that the status quo hasn’t changed.
  90. >You’re still underground.
  91. >Still naked.
  92. >Still miles from Ponyville.
  93. >And still worrying over the looming threat that is Chrysalis.
  94. >Things haven’t really changed at all.
  95. >You’ve just put some distance between you and the changelings
  96. >And as you enter a large den filled with dogs, you realize that you’re new “captors” are just like your old ones.
  97. >Oh, the irony.
  98.
  99. >A sea of puppies surround you.
  100. >Litter after litter.
  101. >It’s gotta be double the population of the changelings, at least.
  102. >It’s not just the puppies. There are plenty of fully grown dogs as well.
  103. >Clad in armor for reasons you’re not quite sure.
  104. >At least you aren’t getting faint from having your energy sucked from you.
  105. >You notice the walls are strewn with gemstones.
  106. >Including the one that emits light.
  107. >Huh. Weird.
  108. >”Hey, Anon. Over here.”
  109. >You turn towards the sound of Dusty’s voice.
  110. >He’s on the other side of the large cavern.
  111. >You carefully make your way over to him, making sure not to accidentally step on any feet.
  112. >He leads you to another tunnel.
  113. “Hey, where are we going?”
  114. >”Loft.”
  115. >What?
  116. >”It’s my bedroom.”
  117. “... bedroom?”
  118. >The last time you were in a bedroom, it was your prison.
  119. >”Well yeah, you didn’t think I was going to let you sleep with the pups did you?”
  120. “I- uh…”
  121. >”You could sleep with Rover and the others?”
  122. >Nope. Not happening.
  123. “The loft is fine.”
  124. >You say quickly.
  125. >He takes you up a set of carved stairs.
  126. >And into a cave embedded inside a cliff facing the ocean.
  127. >Wait, what? Ocean?
  128. >Weren’t you underground?
  129. >How far did you walk today?
  130. >You can see moonlight ripple on the water’s surface hundreds of feet below, through an opening in the wall.
  131. >Dusty climbs up a small ledge.
  132. >Brisk sea air blows from the window, sending chills through your body.
  133. “Hey… do you have some spare clothes?”
  134. >”Huh?”
  135. ”I just-... I’d probably catch a cold from… I don’t have fur.”
  136. >”... never bothered me.”
  137. >You blink.
  138. >Oh, right.
  139. >He doesn’t have any fur either.
  140. >Dusty stares at you for a moment and sighs.
  141. >He takes off his hood and tosses it to you.
  142. >Within seconds, he starts shivering.
  143. >He shrugs it off and buries himself into the small inlet in the wall.
  144. >Oh…
  145. >Crap.
  146.
  147. “...what can you tell me about the Diamond D-”
  148. >You hear a snore.
  149. >It’s only been a few minutes, but Dusty is asleep.
  150. >Leaving you to your thoughts.
  151. >You wrap his hood around your shoulders and stare out at the sky.
  152. >You walk to the window and let your legs dangle off the edge.
  153. >For the first night in forever, you’re out of that awful cave.
  154. >You can see the sky again.
  155. >It’s almost a full moon.
  156. >It’s waning though, since Luna visited you yesterday.
  157. >You bask in the glow, hoping that maybe Luna is watching. That she knows you’re alright.
  158. >If only this could last forever.
  159. >But it can’t.
  160. >You have more important matters in your mind.
  161. >One night away from the changelings won’t do much to Chrysalis.
  162. >You have to stay as far away from them as possible, as long as possible.
  163. >Eisen and Feral are probably on your tail.
  164. >Getting caught will happen.
  165. >You have to be ready for whatever happens next.
  166. >You have to plant your next move, which you don’t even have the slightest idea of what you should do.
  167. >Mara’s probably gone now too. He’s probably Chrysalis’ mindless drone.
  168. >Not that you care.
  169. >Being her drone would actually be an improvem-
  170. >You stop yourself with a sigh.
  171. >You need to stop being so damn bitter.
  172. >You lay on your back and stare at the stars.
  173. >Arms held tight to your chest.
  174.
  175. >You hear something.
  176. >It sounds like ice breaking.
  177. >Or… rocks falling onto the floor.
  178. >You turn towards the sound.
  179. >It’s Dusty.
  180. >His teeth are chattering.
  181. >Oh.
  182. >Right.
  183. >You take his hood back to him, draping it over him like a blanket.
  184. >You feel his paws wrap tightly around your arm, pulling you close.
  185. >You resist the urge to shove him away.
  186. >He’s not Mara.
  187. >And he’s probably freezing to death.
  188. >A sudden chill of air blasts against your back.
  189. >Fuck.
  190. >That’s cold.
  191. >You really want his hood back.
  192. >His grip isn’t letting up.
  193. “... damn it.”
  194. >Not like you have a choice in the matter.
  195. >You slide next to him under the blanket.
  196. >...
  197. >...this isn’t that bad.
  198. >Dusty snuggles against your arm.
  199. >If he does anything funny to you, he’s dead to you.
  200. >You’ll do the same thing you did to Mara earlier.
  201. >And just keep moving right along.
  202. >Another cold gust of air blows from the window.
  203. >You curl your legs underneath the blanket and stare at the sky until sleep comes to you.
  204.
  205. ------
  206.
  207. >”Anon, where are you?”
  208. >You grumble.
  209. >Five more minutes Twilight.
  210. >”Anon?”
  211. >One more minute?
  212. >”ANON!”
  213. >HOLY FUCK.
  214. >You flop out of your bed.
  215. >Twilight gives you a warm embrace.
  216. >”Anon, thank goodness you’re okay.”
  217. Wha, huh?
  218. >Of course you’re okay.
  219. >Why wouldn’t you be?
  220. >Why is she acting so weird?
  221. >”Anon… you’re asleep right now.”
  222. >What?
  223. >”This is a dream. I asked Luna to help me contact you. It’s urgent.”
  224. “Twilight, what are you talking about?”
  225. >”Anon, I need you to focus. You were in a cave with Mara and the Changelings. You escaped. You remember, right?”
  226. >You... what?
  227. >Fuck, you’re really confused right now.
  228. >Twilight slaps you.
  229. >Ow…?
  230. >You think that hurt, but you didn’t feel anything.
  231. >”You’re asleep. Please remember.”
  232. >You slowly nod.
  233. >You’re not entirely following her, but you guess you’re asleep right now.
  234. >”We’ve almost fixed the Element of Kindness. It’s been converted back into an element. There’s just one tiny fragment of the Element that’s missing.”
  235. >Um…
  236. >Okay, that sounds like good news.
  237. >”I think Chrysalis has the last fragment. She must be keeping it so we can’t use the full power of the Elements.”
  238. “What does that mean?”
  239. >”Well, it means two things. One, we have a fighting chance against Chrysalis. Two, you can come back to Ponyville. We’ll be able to protect you there.”
  240. >”ANONYMOUS!”
  241. >You blink.
  242. >”Discord is on his way to meet with you. We know that you’re on the run, we justneed you to find a way to the surface.”
  243. >”ANONYMOUS!”
  244. >What the?
  245. “... what was that?”
  246. >”What was what?
  247.
  248. >Twilight is staring at you confused.
  249. >Didn’t she hear that?
  250. >”ANONYMOUS! IT IS US, THE PRINCESS OF THE NIGHT!”
  251. >Luna?
  252. >”Luna’s here?”
  253. >Huh?
  254. >You didn’t say that out loud.
  255. >”THINE DREAMWORLD IS MALICIOUS.”
  256. >That’s definitely Luna.
  257. >”Anon, where’s Luna?”
  258. >”YOU MUST CLEAR YOUR MIND!”
  259. >Clear your mind?
  260. >Why?
  261. >”CANTERLOT IS IN DANGER!”
  262. >Danger?
  263. >Shit.
  264. >You start to empty your mind, clearing yourself from all thoughts.
  265. >”Anon, wait- stop!”
  266. >The world slowly disappears, Twilight along with it.
  267. >You’re floating in space.
  268. >The world around you is nothing but a foggy mist.
  269. >”Anonymous!”
  270. >You turn towards the sound of Luna’s voice.
  271. >”We are in grave trouble.”
  272. “Trouble? What’s wrong?”
  273. >”Anonymous, you must listen to me. Our sentries have spotted changelings just outside the royal city. We suspect that Chrysalis is preparing for an attack. Do you know what Chrysalis is plotting?”
  274. >Attack? What?
  275. “I’m… I don’t know. I just escaped from the caves.”
  276. >”Escaped?”
  277. “I’m with the Diamond Dogs now. Luna, what’s going on? Twilight just spoke with me a minute ago and said-”
  278. >”Twilight? Twilight Sparkle?”
  279. “Yes, Twilight Sparkle. She said you fixed the Element of Kindness.”
  280. >”Twilight Sparkle has been here, with us this entire time. She and your other friends have been summoned for counsel with my sister. It is not possible that she could have spoken with you. Furthermore, the Element has not been repaired.”
  281. >What?
  282.
  283. “I… Luna?”
  284. >”What is it?”
  285. >You start mentally singing pop songs to see if she reacts.
  286. >But she doesn’t seem to be reacting.
  287. >Is she reading your thoughts? Can she?
  288. >You don’t know.
  289. >But she isn’t reacting to the pop songs like Mara was.
  290. >Couldn’t that just be because Mara is under Chrysalis’ control now?
  291. >”Anonymous, are you alright?”
  292. >You feel a piercing pain in your chest.
  293. >The same pain you would have felt if Mara was doing something to you.
  294. >“Anonymous?”
  295. >It’s almost as if…
  296. >Mara is here..
  297. >Oh… fuck…
  298. >You let out a pained gasp.
  299. >Luna holds you steady, her eyes laden with fear.
  300. >”What’s wrong Anonymous? Are you okay”
  301. “M-mara… in… dream.”
  302. >She closes her eyes and pulls you close to her.
  303. >Her voice lowers to a whisper and her body is glowing.
  304. >”Anonymous, believe me, I am not Mara.”
  305. >The piercing pain is numbing away from her touch.
  306. >You believe her.
  307. >It makes sense now.
  308. >Mara was Twilight.
  309. >And he was going to lure you out so you would be recaptured.
  310. >But because Luna is here, Mara is trying to wake you up.
  311. “Crystal Empire. Can you… move… Canterlot to… Empire?”
  312. >”Move the citizens of Canterlot to the Crystal Empire? I’m afraid we cannot. It’s too big a risk to travel there with an envoy of p0nies.”
  313. >Damn.
  314. >You can feel the pain slowly growing.
  315.
  316. “Luna… Mara… found me.”
  317. >”What?”
  318. “Don’t do… anything… I’ll talk to Chrys-.... Chrysalis.”
  319. >You push her away from you.
  320.
  321. ------
  322.
  323. >”Wake up sunshine.”
  324. >Mara.
  325. >You open your eyes to a familiar ghost. And he looks rather pissed.
  326. >He removes his hands from inside you.
  327. >You back away from him.
  328. >”We have to go. Now.”
  329. >He grabs your hand.
  330. “Fuck off.”
  331. >You push him away.
  332. >”Anny, listen love. We don’t have time for this back and forth.”
  333. >You blink.
  334. >That doesn’t sound like a soulless automaton whose sole purpose is to serve the changeling queen.
  335. >He’s still… normal?
  336. >”Yes, I’m still me. But not for long.”
  337. >You threaten to sing pop songs.
  338. >”Are you fucking out of your mind?”
  339. >You hear a growl from Dusty’s sleeping body next to you.
  340. >”Do you have any idea what you’ve done?”
  341. “No, I don’t. Enlighten me.”
  342. >”Chrysalis is pissed. She’s going to attack Canterlot. Tonight.”
  343. “Really? Is she strong enough to-”
  344. >”Oh no. Don’t you fucking do that. This isn’t a game. You just don’t get it, do you?  If you don’t follow her rules, I lose my free will, all the ponies of Equestria become slaves, and this world loses it’s sun and moon.”
  345. “What? She’s that powerful?”
  346. >”She’s been absorbing energy from her royal subjects. Combined with the energy she got from us, yes, I’d say so.”
  347. >She’s been absorbing from her sub-...
  348. >The entire time you’ve been on the run, she’s been getting stronger.
  349. >You just wanted her to starve, so she’d be weak.
  350. >You didn’t know she could use the other changelings’ energy.
  351. >”Oh, well great plan. Too bad you fucked up and now she is the strongest magical being in history.”
  352. >You bring your hands to your face.
  353. >You fucked up, big time.
  354. >”She told you she’s two steps ahead of you. Fucking told you twice!”
  355. “Will she stop the attack? If I return, will she stop?”
  356. >”I-... yes. That’s why I’m looking for you. We have to go. Now.”
  357. >You let out a sigh.
  358. “Fine.”
  359. >Mara’s ghostly body starts shapeshifting into his usual unicorn self.
  360. >His horn starts to glow.
  361. >You see a flash of red and gray jump at you as Mara casts his teleportation spell.
