  1. Chapter 12
  2.
  3. "Treble... note?"
  4. >"Octavia." she snaps. "I performed at the Grand Galloping Gala last year. How on earth did you forget me?"
  5. >Octavia?
  6. >That name sounds familiar.
  7. >Her eye twitches.
  8. >"I played the cello in the quartet in the lobby."
  9. >You blink.
  10. >Oh.
  11. >That's right.
  12. >You did see her.
  13. >You spoke with her after her solo cello symphony.
  14. >She was amazing.
  15. >You couldn't believe that she could play something like a cello without fingers.
  16. >Then again, you're surprised by a lot of things ponies do with their hooves.
  17. >You do a double take at her cutie mark.
  18. >"Why do you play the cello if your cutie mark is a-"
  19. >"I started on the violin. But I'm capable of playing all string instruments and demand for cellists are high nowadays."
  20. >You stare at her.
  21. "Can you play piano and guitar too?"
  22. >She shoots you an icy glare.
  23. >"Oh please. I prefer more traditional, classic instruments."
  24. >Piano isn't a traditional instrument?
  25. >"It's based on the harpsichord. Baroque. Not classical."
  26. >You shake your head and give a quick sigh.
  27. "Just chill out, alright? It's a party. My party. I want everyone to have fun here."
  28. >She laughs.
  29.
  30. >"This party lacks class."
  31. "What, you think you could make it better?"
  32. >"I know I can."
  33. >She sounds confident.
  34. >Or cocky.
  35. "... would you perform for me?"
  36. >She rolls her eyes.
  37. >"Does it look like I brought my cello with me?"
  38. >You blink.
  39. >She's right.
  40. >You kinda wanted to hear her play.
  41. >She noticed.
  42. >She sighs.
  43. >"Give me a moment."
  44. >She walks on over to the turntables.
  45. >She's whispering something to the sunshade-spectacled DJ pony.
  46. >You can't hear what they're saying.
  47. >The gray pony slides her friend a few coins.
  48. >The DJ lifts up her glasses and smiles.
  49. >She drag a case from underneath her station.
  50. >A bunch of stickers are plastered on it, saying Vinyl Scratch.
  51. >Is that a stage name?
  52. >Octavia nods and swings the case over her shoulder.
  53. >She starts walking upstairs.
  54. >You blink.
  55. >What just happened?
  56. >Did you just see some sort of drug deal go down?
  57. >Either way, Octavia doesn't seem to want to come back.
  58. >Well that sucks.
  59. >The house beat that Octavia was complaining about fades out.
  60. >You pour yourself another glass of strawberry punch.
  61. >Suddenly the lights dim.
  62. >An incredibly loud, high, almost screechy sound fills the room.
  63. >"Hey Anon!"
  64. >You slowly turn.
  65. >"Happy Birthday."
  66. >You see Octavia laying upside down on the stair railing.
  67. >In her hands is a strange, glowing instrument.
  68. >Is that an electric violin?
  69. >Vinyl slams a needle down.
  70.
  71. >You hear an electronic beat blast itself from speakers all across the room.
  72. >Not unlike the "noise" before.
  73. >Octavia starts playing.
  74. >Her melody stands out from the beat.
  75. >No.
  76. >That's wrong.
  77. >She's driving the beat with her melody.
  78. >Vinyl is frantically trying to keep up, pushing down sliders and slowing the speed of the record.
  79. >You feel something warm blow across your neck.
  80. >You turn and see Mara.
  81. >"Sup."
  82. >Luna step beside you.
  83. >"She's quite good, isn't she?"
  84. >You nod.
  85. >Octavia slides down the railing, vaults off of it and starts walking through the crowd.
  86. >Towards you.
  87. >She whips her hair at you, and leans backwards.
  88. >On one leg.
  89. >Her bow arm sways back and forth.
  90. >She plays a single note.
  91. >It slowly fades to a light sound.
  92. >The background beat takes a dive.
  93. >It's suddenly slow.
  94. >Quiet
  95. >Giving an ethereal background sound.
  96. >You stare at her.
  97. >"Pianissimo."
  98. "What?"
  99. >"Very quiet."
  100. >She smiles.
  101. >"Crescendo up to minor."
  102. >What is she talking about?
  103. >"You haven't seen anything yet."
  104. >She flips around and saunters back into the crowd.
  105. >Her arm rocks back and forth between two strings.
  106. >She's building up to something.
  107. >Octavia starts playing a blazing fast, dark, low tone.
  108. >It sends shivers down your back.
  109. "Hey Mara? Luna? Did I fall asleep?"
  110. >"No."
  111. >"I do not believe so."
  112.
  113. >You stand in pure amazement.
  114. >Octavia is rocking out.
  115. >She's...
  116. >Fuck, she's amazing.
  117. >You slam another drink down.
  118. >"That's your third glass of punch today, Anny."
  119. >You blink.
  120. >So it is.
  121. >Luna pours tall glass of punch for herself.
  122. >You watch as the red drink drips down the side of her cup.
  123. >Crap.
  124. >You suddenly have the urge to pee.
  125. >But you can't possibly leave Octavia.
  126. >She's so breathtaking.
  127. >Fiery.
  128. >Spirited.
  129. >The dark tone from before starts to rise.
  130. >Octavia is going up all four strings.
  131. >Her hooves are lightning fast.
  132. >As she plays higher and higher notes, your urge to use the bathroom rises.
  133. >You clench your legs together.
  134. >You have to watch the finale.
  135.
  136. >You fold your arms and fidget nervously.
  137. >Octavia's dark tone is completely gone.
  138. >In fact, she's turned it around back to it's previous, happy state.
  139. >And she's going way over the top.
  140. >She cartwheels.
  141. >Is it a cartwheel if she did it without any hands?
  142. >Wouldn't that make it a flip?
  143. >Her body is swerves and spins, bringing the crowd to its knees in pure astonishment.
  144. >She controls their motions.
  145. >She demands their attention.
  146. >You can't stop staring at her.
  147. >Vinyl starts raising the volume of the beat.
  148. >Octavia's violin screams louder along with it.
  149. >She suddenly pulls away her arm.
  150. >And it crashes back down on the violin, playing the final note.
  151. >The crowd cheers and screams.
  152. >Your hands start clapping together.
  153. >Octavia bows a perfect 90 degree angle bow.
  154. >Just like how you think a professional would.
  155. >And then she points her arm towards Vinyl.
  156. >Vinyl takes a small bow herself, before flipping her disc and putting on some more tunes.
  157. >The majestic gray pony struts over to you.
  158. >She sets the violin down in front of you.
  159. >The staff-looking thing rests next to it.
  160. >It's got tons of split fibers.
  161. >Did she break it?
  162. >"Be a dear and pour me some punch Anon. I'm exhausted."
  163. >You do as your bidden.
  164. >You cringe as the strawberry punch drips into the cup.
  165. >That's right, you had to pee.
  166. "I-uh... Excuse me."
  167.
  168. >You carefully make your way to the bathroom.
  169. >You twist the handle.
  170. >It doesn't turn.
  171. >The door is locked.
  172. "Shit."
  173. >You remember there's a bathroom upstairs.
  174. >You don't think you can make it, but you have to try.
  175. >Each step up a stair is painful.
  176. >You make it and run down the hall.
  177. >You trip over a large box.
  178. >Your body tumbles.
  179. >What the?
  180. >A Vinyl Scratch sticker flutters down to your face.
  181. >Shit, not now.
  182. >You jump through the bathroom door and sprawl on the floor.
  183. >You wrestle with your shorts.
  184. >They're really tight.
  185. >You manage to pull them down and get seated just in the nick of time.
  186. >Oh god.
  187. >Sweet relief.
  188. >That was a close one.
  189. >You finish up and jump back to your feet.
  190. >Your hand instinctively reaches for the handle.
  191. >You hear a spray of water.
  192. >... wait, what?
  193. >Shit.
  194. >You just used the sink as a toilet.
  195. "..."
  196.
  197. >You walk back to the refreshments table.
  198. >Mara, Luna, and Octavia are talking.
  199. >Octavia laughs.
  200. >"That's quite surprising."
  201. >Mara nods.
  202. >"It's just a human thing."
  203. "You two talking about me?"
  204. >You reach for a drink.
  205. >She gives you a quick glance and quickly averts her gaze.
  206. >You blink.
  207. >What was that?
  208. >You see Mara wink away.
  209. >Luna excuses herself.
  210. "You were amazing Octavia."
  211. >"Uh... thank you."
  212. >Her voice isn't as imposing as before.
  213. >It sounded kinda skittish.
  214. >"Mara just told me about your little... fling, with him."
  215. >She certainly didn't mind changing the subject to something so pretentious.
  216. >"Once a month, huh? Must be awkward for you."
  217. "It- it's not... can we not talk about that?"
  218. >"He also told me about your birthday wish."
  219. >You snap to attention.
  220. "Come again?"
  221. >"About... wanting to turn into a man."
  222. >Mara said what?
  223. >You're crestfallen.
  224. >"I'm not judging you."
  225. >She runs a hoof through her hair.
  226. >"But, that's not something most girls think about."
  227.
  228. >You look over to Luna.
  229. >She couldn't have stopped him from saying anything?
  230. >You can barely see Mara, looking at you from behind Luna's wings.
  231. >Great.
  232. "Well... um."
  233. >You rub your arm nervously.
  234. "I'm not most girls..."
  235. >You look away.
  236. "I mean, just look at me... I'm a freak. Hands, a flat face. I'm a human. Do I look like any mare you've ever seen?"
  237. >That did absolutely nothing for your self esteem.
  238. >You rest your head on the table.
  239. >"May I ask why you wished for such a thing?"
  240. >Octavia looks at you.
  241. >You don't have an answer.
  242. >"It's not that you... like girls, is it?"
  243. >You look at her.
  244. >And wonder.
  245. >It's not that you like girls.
  246. >You've never even thought about them that way.
  247. >It's just...
  248. >You've never really thought of guys that way either.
  249. >You weren't very friendly on Earth.
  250. "... no, it's not that."
  251. >"Then why?"
  252. "I…"
  253.
  254. >Octavia's eyes lock with yours.
  255. "I don't know."
  256. >You slump against the table.
  257. >Fuck, why did Mara tell her all this shit?
  258. >"... do you not like being a girl?"
  259. >Why the fuck is she asking you all of these questions?
  260. >You groan.
  261. >It's not that.
  262. >Being a girl isn't all that bad.
  263. >Especially in a world with a fucked up gender ratio.
  264. >The only thing that you dislike is having a fucking bloody mess drop out of you every month.
  265. >And you suppose having Mara around made it a little unenjoyable.
  266. >But you made the wish before you met him.
  267. "No. I don't hate being one."
  268. >Octavia pulls up a seat.
  269. >"Then what?"
  270. >You honestly don't know why you even thought of such a thing.
  271. >Everyone was putting you on the spot because of that stupid cake.
  272. >You guess you had to chalk it up to not knowing what to wish for.
  273. "I don't have an answer for you."
  274. >Octavia scoffs.
  275. >"You have to have a reas-"
  276. "No. Octavia, I don't."
  277. >You sit on the table.
  278. "Ever since I ended up here in Equestria, I've been kinda lost. I don't know what to do here. I don't fit in. I can't really do much."
  279. >She pats your shoulder.
  280. >"You have to be good at something, right?"
  281. >You laugh.
  282. "Not really, I'm just average."
  283. >"Everyone has some special skill they're good at."
  284. "Not humans."
  285. >Octavia's head twists in confusion.
  286. "Humans don't have cutie marks. They don't have a destiny. We spend the first twenty or so years of our lives trying to figure out what it is we're good at, and if we can't find it, we just do whatever is easiest."
  287. >She's shocked.
  288. >"S-so you haven't found out your special talent?"
  289. >You shake your head.
  290. >The musical pony goes quiet.
  291. "I guess I have a knack for getting into bad situations, if that counts?"
  292. >Octavia looks disgusted.
  293. "That was a joke."
  294. >She laughs a little.
  295. >"So, for humans, is being a man easier?"
  296. >You shrug.
  297. "Yeah. Yeah I guess it is."
  298. >"Is that why you wished for that?"
  299. >You look out to the dancefloor.
  300. >You spot Twilight stumbling around and giggle.
  301. "Yeah. I guess so."
  302.
  303. >You pour yourself another glass.
  304. "Did Mara say anything else that I should kill him
  305. for?"
  306. >"Only that you really cute."
  307. >You spit punch all over a white pony nearby.
  308. >"My coat! Dear heavens Anon, look what you've done to my coat! It'll stainnn!"
  309. >You watch as Rarity runs out the door.
  310. >Oops.
  311. >You look up at Mara.
  312. >He did not say that.
  313. >The bastard has been dragging you around by the hair this entire time.
  314. >He wouldn't.
  315. >He couldn't have!
  316. >"You know, I sort of agree."
  317. >Your head turns towards Octavia.
  318. >You're in horror.
  319. >She's not a les-
  320. >"You have a strange aura about you. Like a broken bird. Some stallions find that attractive."
  321. >You feel like gagging.
  322. >The last thing you want is another horse cock.
  323.
  324. "A broken bird? I don't think I fully understand."
  325. >"Yeah, you know? You're like a bird with a broken wing. All this bird wants to do is fly, but she can't. Stallions find it attractive because they think they can be the p0ny that heals them, but uh... yeah. In that respect, you're very cute."
  326. >She sips her glass of punch.
  327. >You don't know what to say.
  328. >What are you supposed to say to something like that?
  329. "Thanks? I think that was a compliment?"
  330. >"It was."
  331. >Octavia smiles.
  332. >"I'll be right back. Gotta return this violin to Vinyl."
  333. >She picks up the violin and bow and goes upstairs to retrieve the case.
  334. >You blink.
  335. >Why would a DJ need an electric violin?
  336. >You shake your head.
  337. >This place is weird.
  338.
  339. >"She's quite lovely, isn't she?"
  340. >You scowl.
  341. >Mara floats beside you.
  342. "You have no idea how badly I want to punch your face."
  343. >Mara chuckles.
  344. >"Sorry. I needed something to break the ice."
  345. >Break the ice?
  346. >"Yeah. Octavia seems like a nice pony."
  347. >He raises an eyebrow at you suggestively.
  348. >What?
  349. >You stare at him.
  350. "..."
  351. >Oh.
  352. >Oh, that's what he meant.
  353. "W-what? N-no I don't think of her tha-"
  354. >"You opened up to her. More than you ever did to me. Then again, I know everything that's ever happened to you, but that's beside the point."
  355. >You blink.
  356. "So? That doesn't mean that I'm a-"
  357. >"Weren't you worried about finding a special somep0ny two weeks ago?"
  358. >Huh?
  359. >"This world has a much higher percentage of girls than what you're used to. And you are a human. That means the chance of you finding a stallion is slim."
  360. >Did he just call you hopeless?
  361. >You shake your head.
  362. "You're up to something."
  363. >Mara chuckles.
  364. >"Okay yeah. Maybe I am. But who says you can't find it your heart to love a gir-oh!"
  365. >Mara suddenly looks up.
  366. >Huh?
  367. >You turn and feel the stinging spray of sour lemonade land in your face.
  368. >It's in your eyes.
  369. >Holy crap it burns.
  370. >You flail around.
  371. >You can't see a damn thing.
  372.
  373. "Ow fuck, fuck!"
  374. >"I'm glad I don't need eyes."
  375. "Fuck, just get some water, or milk or something!"
  376. >Mara chuckles.
  377. >You have a feeling that he's gone.
  378. >"Anon? What's wrong?"
  379. >Octavia is back.
  380. >You can barely see a silhouette of some one approaching you.
  381. >You frantically point at your face.
  382. "Something, in eyes, fuck!"
  383. >Octavia gasps.
  384. >"Okay, Anon, lean back and close your eyes."
  385. >What?
  386. >"Just trust me..."
  387. >You lean back.
  388. >She's holding you.
  389. >You close your eyes.
  390. >You can feel tears falling down your face.
  391. >"This is going to hurt, just a bit."
  392. >She places something on your face.
  393. >It feels like it's on fire.
  394. >You feel some more tears fall down your face.
  395. >It's cold.
  396. >Wait, what?
  397. >Octavia is rubbing ice over your face.
  398. >After a moment, the burning sensation disappears.
  399. >"There."
  400. >She rubs a paper towel over your face.
  401. >Your face is stinging, but at least you can see now.
  402. "I- uh... thanks."
  403. >"No problem."
  404. >She's still holding you up.
  405. "Uh... you can let go of me now."
  406. >You fall to the ground.
  407. >Ow. Damn it.
  408. >These p0nies are too damn literal sometimes.
  409. >"You alright?"
  410. "Never better."
  411. >You grumble.
