  1. >A rooster crows as dawn breaks.
  2. >You open your eyes to see sunlight pouring into the room.
  3. >At first, you don't move.
  4. >The warmth of the blanket and rough time from the night might have something to do with that.
  5. >Looking around, you try to figure out where you are.
  6. >There's plenty of hay stacks lying around, a few stables, and feeding bins.
  7. >Putting piece by piece by piece together, its safe to say you're in a barn.
  8. >The rooster crows again.
  9. >You roll your eyes at how cliche that is.
  10. >Grabbing your side, you feel your ribs.
  11. >Something weird has happened; They're back to normal.
  12. >Placing your hands to your sides you bring yourself to a sitting position.
  13. >The heavy pain is no longer there and instead is replaced with soreness.
  14. >That purple unicorn did a good job mending your ribs.
  15. >You shudder, remembering the process of that last night.
  16. >Looking back at it, you feel kind of bad for hitting her like you did.
  17. >'But she deserved it!' a voice tells you in the back of its head.
  18. >'She should have told you she was going to hurt you.'
  19. >She still mended your ribs, so you shake your head to rid of the crazy voice.
  20. >The soreness of your side makes it difficult to get up, but it was not impossible.
  21. >You open the barn doors as the sun plasters your face.
  22. >Shielding your eyes, you look around you.
  23. >Apple trees spread far and wide cross your eyes.
  24. >Splashes of green, red, and yellow cover the trees in a vast array.
  25. >"It sure is something, isn't it?"
  26. >You look down to see a little beige pony at your side and jump.
  27. >No matter how long you been in this world, you'll never get used to them talking.
  28. >She stares at you, awaiting an answer.
  29. >You give her a simple nod and look back out into the field.
  30. >She runs to the front of you and begins to boil up with excitement.
  31. >"Mah name is Applebloom. This here is Sweet Apple Acres, the main source of Apples in Ponyville and all neighboring towns."
  32. >She runs up to a tree and plants her front hooves in the dirt.
  33. >Using all the force in her back legs, she kicks the tree.
  34. >A few apples fall from the branches high branches above.
  35. >You clap for her, impressed that a pony can do that, especially a filly.
  36. >She beams with a smile that could melt the ice off the coldest of hearts.
  37. >Slowly a smile creeps onto your face.
  38. >"What's yer name?"
  39. "My name is Anonymous."
  40. >She crooks her head and try to sync your lip movements.
  41. >"A-noon-uh-mouse?"
  42. >You chuckle at the sight of her frustration.
  43. "You can just call me Anon."
  44. >She give a sigh of relief.
  45. >Maybe that was too much for her?
  46. >Whatever, it's best not to get too in depth with it.
  47. >Something catches your eye.
  48. >You look down at an apple at your foot.
  49. >Bending down, you inspect it.
  50. >No bugs, no bite mark, no sign of pests getting to the apple.
  51. >That's strange, you're pretty sure they don't use pesticides in this world.
  52. >If that was so, then how was this apple so ripe and undamaged?
  53. >You pick up the apple and take a bite from it.
  54. >It gives off a crisp crunch loud enough that would make Doritos jealous.
  55. >Letting it settle in your mouth, you absorb the taste.
  56. >It's the best damn apple you ever had.
  57. >But you can't tell if its because it is really good, or because you're hungry as hell.
  58. >Applebloom watches in horror as you mutilate the poor apple, leaving nothing but the stem and core.
  59. >It feels so good to have something in your stomach after not eating for a while.
  60. >"You gonna pay for that, right?"
  61. >You turn around and see the hatted pony from last night with a bitter look on her face.
  62. >Despair reaches your face.
  63. >Reaching into your pocket, you feel nothing but lint.
  64. "I don't have any money."
  65. >She let's out a heavy sigh and stomps the ground.
  66. >"Then yer gonna have to work for it by helping out in da farm!"
  67. >She walks up to another tree and kicks it as well.
  68. >Unlike Applebloom, a mass majority of the apples from the tree fall.
  69. >A shower of green, yellow, and red fall upon you.
  70. >They begin to hit you, and it doesn't feel like rain droplets; more like baseballs.
  71. >Trying your best to dodge the downfall of pain, you begin to duck and weave from out of under the tree.
  72. >The hatted pony begins to chuckle as she watches this comedic act.
  73. >Suddenly, a sharp pain hits you and brings you to your knees almost instantly.
  74. >Clenching you side, you fall over.
  75. >Your bones may have been mended, but they still ached.
  76. >Applebloom runs over to you to ensure that you are okay.
  77. >"Are y'alright, Anon?!"
  78. >"He'll be fine, Applebloom."
  79. >The hatted pony walks over and hits your right set of ribs.
  80. >You let up and scream in pain.
  81. "What the hell was that for?!"
  82. >She gives you a slick smile and tips her hat.
  83. >"It made you forget the pain on your other side, didn't it?"
  84. >She begins to chuckle and turns around.
  85. >'What a bitch!'
  86. >It's that fucking voice again.
  87. >You shake your head and get up slowly.
  88. >"I want ya to work the west field today. There's some baskets in the barn. I expect ya to be done by sunrise. That is..."
  89. >She tilts her face towards your direction.
  90. >"...Unless you have somewhere to be?"
  91. >A sudden rush of realization hits you and you remember everything before the incident.
  92. >You lived in the streets, nothing to your name.
  93. >Ponies didn't want you working in their shops; they were afraid you would scare customers away.
  94. >You didn't know a single thing about construction work, so that opted out.
  95. >All around, you weren't welcome anywhere.
  96. >But she didn't care how you looked, or what you were good at.
  97. >She was will to give you a try, without looking at those things.
  98. >You shake your head and sigh.
  99. "I have no where to go."
  100. >She begins to head to the house.
  101. >"Good, git to work then. Applebloom, show him the ropes and let him do his job."
  102. >Applebloom jumps up with glee.
  103. >"You got it sis!"
  104. >She scurries over to the barn and brings out a cart of baskets.
  105. >You both begin to head towards the west field, a very small part compared to the rest.
  106. >Applebloom begins to place the baskets around the tree underneath the parts with heavy bushels.
  107. >You clear your throat and look towards her.
  108. "Listen, I have a question to ask."
  109. >She perks her head like a confused dog.
  110. >This question had been eating at you since you started heading towards the field.
  111. "Does that hatted pony hate me?"
  112. >Her eyes lower and reach back to yours.
  113. >"I don't think so. I think she might be upset that ya hurt Twilight last night, but she wouldn't hold that against ya. Ya was just merely pretectin' yerself."
  114. >She takes another basket and places it under the tree.
  115. >"She's usually is hard on colts. She says that's the only way ta make them inta stallions."
  116. >Placing the last of basket down she turns to you and nods.
  117. >"Enough of that though, time to git ta work!"
  118. >You look at the tree and think.
  119. >How are you supposed to get them down?
  120. --------------------------------
  121. >Your sister triumphantly enters the house.
  122. >Taking another apple fritter, you bite into it.
  123. >Applejack may be good at apple bucking, but damn was she a good cook as well.
  124. >She walks up, grabs a piece and bites down.
  125. >Turning to you, she sees you're staring at her and automatically gets frustrated.
  126. >"What?"
  127. >You turn back to your fritter and take another bite.
  128. "What'd ya do with him?"
  129. >She take another bite with an aggregated expression.
  130. >"I put him ta work is what I did."
  131. >You place the apple fritter on your plate and look at her.
  132. "Ya sure ya should be doin' that? He just recovered from a bad injury."
  133. >She slams the apple fritter down and glares at you.
  134. >Her face scrunches up from it.
  135. >"Big Mac, I ain't having no freeloaders on ma farm. He works, or he goes."
  136. >You shake your head.
  137. >Headstrong as always.
  138. >You finish the fritter and leave your dish in the sink.
  139. >As you're walking out, Applejack pipes up.
  140. >"Can ya do me a favor, and check up on him and Applebloom? They're out in the West field. I don't want nothing to happen to 'em."
  141. >You let out a smirk and nod.
  142. >Headstrong, but caring.
  143. >Making way down to the west field, you see Applebloom and the human in the distance.
  144. >She already has the baskets set up and is explaining the ropes.
  145. >You stay a distance so they can't see you.
  146. >"All you gots ta do is hit the tree hard enough ta shake it. The apples will fall right down."
  147. >The human lifts its leg up and kicks the tree.
  148. >No success.
  149. >Applebloom interjects.
  150. >"No, ya gotta plant your in the ground and lean your weight inta the kick!"
  151. >He gives Applebloom a bewildered look, but attempts anyway.
  152. >The human gets down on his forelegs, lifts his backside up, and kicks the tree.
  153. >A single apple falls into the basket.
  154. >Applebloom looks at it and shrugs.
  155. >"Well, it's a start..."
  156. >You begin to make your way toward the two when Applebloom notices you.
  157. >"Big Mac!"
  158. >She hurries to you and bounces excitedly.
  159. >"Can you show Anon how to buck?"
  160. >You stand there and ponder.
  161. >If you do, he might feel intimidated and not like you since you are clearly stronger.
  162. >On the other hand, he might not be intimidated, but feel defeated.
  163. "Nope."
  164. >She looks at you with concern.
  165. >"Why not?!"
  166. >You shake your head and try to come up with something.
  167. "Apple bucking ain't about kickin', it about gettin' apples."
  168. >Applebloom looks at you and suddenly her face lights up.
  169. >"So what yer sayin' is, Anon has to find his own way to get the apples. Something that works out his own way!"
  170. >She wraps her forelegs around you and gives a hug.
  171. >"Yer a genius Big Mac!"
  172. >You nod your head and agree.
  173. >You merely meant to say the apples have to hit the ground, but it made you look smarter if you went with what she said.
  174. >Anon scratches his chin and looks up.
  175. >He backs up and begins to run towards the tree.
  176. >Using all the force in his legs, he kicks off the truck.
  177. >Pieces of bark go flying along with himself as he gains air.
  178. >He wraps his forelegs around the branch and holds himself.
  179. >Using his weight, he shakes his body in a violent matter, release the apples from the branch.
  180. >They begin to rain down on the floor and buckets.
  181. >The human lets go and comes down to earth, but holds his side.
  182. >Applebloom jumps up and down with excitement.
  183. >"That was amazing, Anon! Right big brother?"
  184. >It was creative, to say the least.
  185. "Eeyup."
  186. >"It sure was something."
  187. >You all turn around to see Applejack lying across a tree.
  188. >She always had a way of sneaking up on people.
  189. >Laying her hat the ground, she gets up and walks over to Anon.
  190. >"It may not be as fast as buckin' 'em, but it'll get the job done."
  191. >She nudges him on the leg and suddenly her smile dissipates.
  192. >"But ya still got a lot of work to get done. If ya can, get five trees done by the end of the day and bring the baskets ta the storage silo."
  193. >She begins to walk back towards the barn again.
  194. >"I'll consider that payment and let you be on your way."
  195. >You shake your head and turn to Anon.
  196. >He has his head fixed on the tree with a frown fixated on it.
  197. >Shaking his head, he runs to the tree again and continues.
  198. >He's got heart, gotta give 'em that.
  199. --------------------------------
  200. >You can't even see your hands.
  201. >The night's moon is emitting brightly, but these trees just prevent you from see it.
  202. >You're on the fifth tree, but this last branch is out of reach.
  203. >No matter how fast you run, no matter how hard you kick, there's no way of reaching it.
  204. >'You don't have to finish it. Just leave. They won't miss you. No one does.'
  205. >Looking at the last branch, you think to yourself.
  206. >Its like my past life; out of reach.
  207. >Your friends, your family; none of them miss you.
  208. >That's why you did it.
  209. >That's why you're here.
  210. >You lost the one thing in life that made you feel whole, and then it was taken from you in the blink of an eye.
  211. >And now you're in this world, where there's nothing to live for as well.
  212. >Falling on your ass, you look up and feel a tear roll down your face.
  213. >No one to live for, not even yourself.
  214. >'You should just end it, Anonymous. It will be no different.'
  215. "What do I have to live for? No one will miss me."
  216. >"We will."
  217. >You turn to see Applebloom with Applejack.
  218. >Applebloom has a look on her face that make the toughest of men cry.
  219. >It's then you realize that you are, indeed, crying.
  220. >Wiping the tears from your face, you slowly stand up.
  221. >Turning your back to them, you let out a heavy sigh.
  222. "Applejack, I can't do it. I'm a failure."
  223. >She stares you down and shakes her head.
  224. >"With that kind of attitude, ya won't make it anywhere."
  225. She walks up to the tree and bucks it.
  226. >The apples fall down and gently land in the basket.
  227. >"How do ya expect ta do things that are impossible without the help of others?"
  228. >She paces herself to you and places a hoof on your shoulder.
  229. >You look up and are instantly mesmerized.
  230. >Those eyes.
  231. >Those deep green eyes.
  232. >They warmed your heart to the core.
  233. >A smile crawls on your face and one to hers.
  234. >Applebloom, not wanting to be left out, jumps onto your lap and wraps her hooves around your neck.
  235. >She gives a tight hug, one not expected from a small filly.
  236. >Applejack pulls her hoof back and Applebloom releases her grip.
  237. >"We still need ta get these apple back ta the barn."
  238. >You place the baskets on the cart and grab both reigns.
  239. >Walking back, as Applebloom continues you babble about cutie marks, Applejack walks along side of you.
  240. >"We can use the extra help on the farm. I'll let ya stay in the barn and pay ya for your help. Sound like a deal?"
  241. >You feel something you haven't felt in a very long time.
  242. >A reason to live.
  243. >Nodding your head, you grin from ear to ear.
  244. "That would be great."
