When Sombra rose to power, he toiled for him, creating more and more powerful instruments of war   and torture, and as he saw his people suffer, his conscience bore the burden in shame. It was   not long before the dark works he unleashed reached his own household. When his brother,   Standing Gem rose his voice against Sombra, he too was silenced. Brilliant took in his brother's   due wife. It was not long until the child was born, though burdened and saddened by the lack of   the Heart, she died in the process. Brilliant took the boy, and, in a flash of insight, named   him Last Hope. And dreamed up a scheme to end Sombra.   So Brilliant began teaching the boy every night, while the eyes of  Sombra's soldiers and guards   were not upon him. For seventeen years he taught the boy, training him in the ways of fighting   evil, of undoing the most powerful of magic, of defending others. Brilliant crafted for him, in   secret, a master shield, an artifact that was the masterpiece of all his years as a Crystal   Magi. Bound with powers of light, shining gloriously, imbedded with immense power, painstakingly   crafted by Brilliant, he wrote "HOPE" on its front.   Last Hope began his mission. To end Sombra and his army of evil ponies. Ready. Willing. Prepared   to fight. His training complete, he took his shield and rushed into the city streets, enraged   and furious, burning with righteous anger against the tyrant Sombra. The crystal ponies soon   rallied into a great angry mob, marching to the Crystal Tower, calling for the ousting of their   dark tyrant. Lost Hope blasted and dispelled every shadowbeast or corrupt magi that stood in his   way, protecting the crowd even as they marched ever closer to the tower, till Sombra emerged   from the building.   The ensuing battle lasted exactly three minutes, and was entirely one-sided. The shadow-mage   entirely overwhelmed the idealistic young hero, throwing him around like a ragdoll through the   city streets, forcing him to go entirely on the defensive. For every piece of magic he   dispelled, five more made it through, for every attack he blocked, he was struck three times.   As he was struck to the ground, the crowd gathered, their champion smashed on the pavement   before them. He turned to them, waiting for someone to intervene, to say something. Nopony did.   The crowd watched in fear as Sombra readied the spell that wound end him, striking him with a   blast of shadow. He saw the crowd flee, someponies trampling others in their drive to escape.   One image stood out in all this. A child, a young filly, dropping her doll, as Sombra's minions   chased them through the streets.   Energy shattered out in every direction as the blast hit, though clearly warped by the   interactions of the shield's magic. He awoke in the icy waste, a mile outside the city, a   thousand years later. Angry and bitter at his useless countrymen, he carved the words "RIDES   ALONE" into his shield, purchased a cloak, and began wandering the new world.
