  2.
  3. "Alright, just follow Rainbow's beat and we should be good. Ready, one, two, three.."
  4. >Octavia began tapping one of her bass strings to set the tempo before moving to a different note
  5. >She nodded to Twilight once she changed notes a few times to set the song's tone
  6. >Twilight's horn glowed and she layed down the melody in the silence before you and Rainbow jumped in
  7. >She layed down a heavy yet smooth beat while you slammed out chords
  8. >Rainbow transitioned the beat to the first verse while you sang out the lyrics
  9.
  10. "Whoah-Oh here it comes!
  11. That funny feeling again
  12. winding me up inside every time we touch.
  13. Hey I don't know
  14. Oh tell me where to begin
  15. 'Cause I never ever felt so much. Hey!
  16.
  17. And I can't recall, any love at all
  18. Oh baby this blows them all awaaaay!"
  19.
  20. >Twilight played the notes of the melody again before everyone jumped in
  21.
  22. "It's got what it takes
  23. so tell me why can't this be love?
  24. Straight from my heart!
  25. Oh tell me why can't this be love?"
  26.
  27. >Rainbow transitioned into the next verse smoothly while you, Twilight and Octavia improvised for a second or two before the next verse began
  28.
  29. "I tell myself!
  30. Hey only fools rush in
  31. And only time will tell if we stand the test of time.
  32. All I know! You've got to run to win
  33. and I'll be damned ifI'll get hung up on the line.
  34.
  35. Hey! No I can't recall anything at all
  36. Oh baby, this blows them all awaaay!"
  37.
  38. >Twilight played the melody notes again
  39.
  40. "Whoo! It's got what it takes.
  41. So tell me why can't this be love?
  42. You want it straight from the heart, Ooooh!
  43. Tell me why can't this be love?"
  44.
  45. >Rainbow played down the drums while you, Twilight and Octavia played a transition
  46. >You sang along with the major notes, hitting the high ones flawlessly
  47. >The band moved to the breakdown. You started hitting hard chords in a sort of solo before wailing your guitar a bit as Octavia kept the bassline moving smoothly
  48. >You nodded to Octavia and Twilight when the break was nearing its end
  49. >You then played down the note spectrum before playing the beginning transition once more, singing along with the notes again
  50. >Rainbow slammed the snare with both sticks, silencing the band. Twilight played the melody notes once more, transitioning back to the chorus
  51.
  52. "Whoo! It's got what it takes!
  53. So tell me why can't this be love?
  54. Straight from my heart Ooooooh!
  55. Tell me why can't this be love?
  56. Baby, why can't this be love?
  57. Got to know why can't this be love?
  58. I wanna know why can't this be, Looooooove whoah-oh!"
  59.
  60. >You all continued to play the melody of the song
  61. >Rainbow switched from cymbals to hi-hats for a bit
  62. >You played high chords, matching the melody Twilight was dishing out
  63. >Octavia kept the feel of the song just right with her bassline until the very end
  64. >Rainbow slammed the cymbals when everything began to slow down, symbolizing the end of the song
  65. >It was quiet for a moment or two before you decided to break the silence
  66. "That. Was. Kick-ass!"
  67.
  68. >You brought Cyrus' strap around your neck and let it hang off your shoulder while holding the neck
  69. "Guys, that was great. But...I don't know. I just can't seem to shake this feeling."
  70. >"Whaddya mean, Anon?" Rainbow asked as she fluttered from behind the drum set
  71. "The band. Something about our sound...it...needs something."
  72. >"And what do you think that 'something' is?"
  73. >Octavia leaned her bass against your room wall and dropped down on four legs again
  74. >You sit on your bed and put a hand to your chin
  75. >Everything sounded pretty awesome
  76. >What else could you need?
  77. >You've already got Twilight as a keyboardist for piano and other ambient sounds your instruments can't produce
  78. >Rainbow's the drummer, and a damn good one at that
  79. >Octavia's got the bass covered. Surprisingly her hooves can fly across that thing pretty damn well
  80. >And you've got the singing and guitar covered
  81. >But there's still something missing!
  82. >Wait...
  83. >What did a lot of the greats have?
  84. >Boston, Queen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Judas Priest
  85. >They all had two guitarists
  86. >That's it!
  87. >With the added sound of another guitar the band would be complete
  88. "Guys, I've got it. What we need is an extra guitarist. A rhythm guitarist!"
  89. >Octavia and Rainbow are silent
  90. >Twilight speaks up, curious of your reasoning
  91. >"I don't get it, Anon. Why would we need another guitarist? You've got the part covered."
  92. "Because, Twi. You know those solos I play?"
  93. >She nods
  94. "Alright, well imagine that but with another guitar backing me."
  95. >She cocks her head to the side
  96. >You sigh
  97. "Alright, let me demonstrate."
  98. >You walk over to Geddy, your keyboard, and hit one note a few times
  99. "Now you see how this one note sounds pretty bland on its own?"
  100. >"Well of course, that's why it's got so many notes. You hit multiple notes at the same time in a chord."
  101. "Right. The same applies to the guitar and most other instruments. Even though guitar sounds good on its own, another guitar can add so much to the overall sound of a band. Not only that, but I can have the melody still going and pump out a solo at the same time."
  102. >"Similar to an orchestra and its multiple parts for each instrument." Octavia chimes in
  103. "Exactly."
  104. >Her eyes widen in surprise once she realizes your point
  105. >"That's...brilliant."
  106. "You got that right. But we can't just expect another guitarist to pop up out of nowhere."
  107. >You place your hands on your sides and sigh
  108. >Octavia and Rainbow left the room for something to drink
  109. >Sugarcoating it wasn't going to solve anything; your chances of finding another guitarist are slim to none
  110. >Doesn't mean you can't look
  111.
  112. >But still, who knows if anything will even turn up?
  113. >This isn't the time for giving up, though
  114. >Maybe advertising the band in Canterlot would he-
  115. >"Um, Anon?"
  116. "What is it, Twilight?"
  117. >"Um...my brother plays guitar..."
  118. >Her brother?
  119. >-That- pony?
  120. >"...but you didn't hear it from me!"
  121. >That's not bad news, not by a long shot. But let's just say it isn't good news either
  122. >Especially because the first time you talked to him was after he failed miserably at defending the castle from a changeling attack during the wedding
  123. >He kept saying he was under mind control but you still didn't see how he wasn't able to tell the difference between his lover and a fake up until the point he was put under the spell
  124. >You haven't seen him since
  125. >"Anon, I wasn't supposed to tell you that. Pleasepleaseplease, please don't ask him to join."
  126. >You couldn't completely disagree with that suggestion, but you still needed him if he was good
  127. "Twi, we kinda need his help."
  128. >"Anon you can't!"
  129. "Why didn't he want you telling anyp0ny anyway?"
  130. >She sighed
  131. >" When we were younger, my brother and I, I walked in on him playing it in his room. He was skipping most of his guard training to hide in his room and play that thing. He said he was afraid Mom and Dad would be disappointed that he didn't want to be a guard."
  132. "But if he wasn't born to be in the guard, captain of it no less, then why would his cutiemark be a shield?"
  133. >"Because it's not a shield, Anon. It's a guitar pick."
  134. "Wait...you can't be serious."
  135. >"It's true. He told me about it one day while he was playing. I walked in his room and he had his cutiemark. 'You're a guard now!' I shouted when I saw it. He told me to quiet down and that it wasn't a shield. He showed me how good he could play and proved to me that his cutiemark...isn't the one everyp0ny thinks he has."
  136. "...Well...He still plays, right?"
  137. >"I doubt it. He used to tell me new songs he was learning to play then and in letters when I first came to P0nyville, but now he rarely says anything about it."
  138. "Do you remember when he stopped saying anything?"
  139. >"I'm not sure, but it was shortly after I came here. You don't think it's because of that do you?"
  140. "Of course not, Twi."
  141. >You felt sympathy for Twilight, but you still had to find out how to contact Shining Armor
  142. "Listen, Twilight. If his cutiemark's actually one for music, then we should do something about it."
  143. >"What do you mean 'do something about it'?"
  144. "I mean we should convince him to join us."
  145. >Twilight groaned
  146. >"How did I know you would say that? Ugh...Look, Anon. It's not that easy. He's -Captain- of the guard. He can't just quit."
  147. "He's got to be miserable in that position, though. I don't know about you but if I could play the guitar and was stuck in a guard's life I'd be pretty miserable."
  148. >"..That's true, but I'm still not sure if he'll be able to join or if he'd even want to."
  149. "I bet he'd love to join a band. The only problem I see is actually getting him out of the guard's position."
  150. >Twilight looked to the ground supposedly in deep thought. It looked like the decision to try and get her brother to quit the guard was weighing heavily on her
  151. "I'm sorry to pressure you Twilight.."
  152. >"No, no, it's alright. I'll ask Princess Celestia for five express tickets to Canterlot."
  153. "Yes! Don't worry, Twi. I bet we can pull it off."
  154. >"I don't know...but you're right. We can try."
  155.
  156. >The band practiced for some time after Rainbow and Octavia returned
  157. >You filled them in on the plan before starting up practice again
  158. >Rainbow was excited that you found another member while Octavia nodded and smiled
  159. >When you finished the practice session Twilight and Octavia said their goodbyes for the night and went to Twilight's library
  160. >You pushed Geddy back against the wall and unplugged Cyrus, setting him on his stand next to the window
  161. >"So how're we gonna get Shining Armor to join us, Anon?"
  162. "Probably appeal to his sense of adventure."
  163. >"You mean tell him how awesome it's gonna be playing in a band?"
  164. "You got it."
  165. >You fall on your bed and release a content sigh
  166. >Rainbow went to your window and looked outside
  167. >"Anon, how are you gonna deal with Shining Armor?"
  168. >Rainbow was the only pony who saw your dispute with SA
  169. >She's been quiet about the whole thing in front of Twilight, but you had a feeling that was going to change sometime in the near future
  170. >Well, it was a choice of not having another member or dealing with SA
  171. >Sucking it up and seeing that p0ny again is a much better choice
  172. "That's a good question."
  173. >You roll over in bed
  174. "I'll figure something out. I mean, we can both put that past dispute behind us easily if we both have something to gain from each other."
  175. >"I hope so."
  176. "Well if you were stuck in a crappy guard position and had the choice to join a band which one would you choose?"
  177. >"Alright, I see your point, hehe."
  178. >You yawn loudly
  179. "Spending the night again?"
  180. >"Nah, I feel like hogging up my own bed tonight."
  181. >You both laugh
  182. "Alright. G'night Rainbow. Sleep well."
  183. >"You too, Anon."
  184. >Rainbow opened the window and flew off
  185. >You got up, closed the window and fell back in bed
  186. >Thoughts of how tomorrow would play out jumped around in your head
  187. >Slowly, you drifted off to sleep
