Why won't the rainclouds go away?

The thought echoes in my mind
This was supposed to fix it all
But instead I've been broken in kind

The words resound as my stomach churns
I thought I knew what was best
But it seems I have much more to learn

Her words weigh me down as lead
Did I not try my best?
I can no longer lie in bed

I walk alone on darkened streets
I tell myself it was the right choice
But I know I lie through my teeth

Even now those words cut deep
I find myself so close to their source
When I should simply be asleep

There's a light on in her room
And a feeling grows within my chest
A sense of impending doom

Her words scream inside my head
I shove my way inside her home
Fighting against my newfound dread

The sound of sobbing bleeds through my ears
For every step I take up the stairs
I feel as though it takes years

I furiously slam a fist against her door
It feels too late to recognize
She's someone I cannot ignore

I burst into her room
A slender leg steps on a chair
In the early morning gloom

Why won't the rainclouds go away?

Usually bright blue eyes, blurry, swollen and red
Another moment and I know
I could have found her dead

Why won't the rainclouds go away?

I hold her head against my chest
Neither of our tears have yet dried
And till they do, I'll find no rest

Why won't the rainclouds go away?

She whispers in my ear
I freeze before I speak
Can I answer her unspoken fears?

Why won't the rainclouds go away?

I tell her I don't know
I feel her push against me
In the early morning glow

Why won't the rainclouds go away?

I say that they never may
But on my life, I swear it love
